1 April 2016 Calendar of Events April 7 April 24 May 5 Board Elections Trip Picture Night Game Night Bus Trip to NYC (Check for updates on this) The Dutchmen Got Talent - Or Not! President Paul Schwartz Check for updates I hope everyone had a great ski and snowboard o season, as short as it was! I sure didn t enjoy 80 weather the last week out, but I hope you all made the best of the short time we had snow. April is our transition month. We return to one meeting a month, and will elect a new Board. Remember that the Board isn t alone in making the Club run. We need everyone s help to fill out committees and support events. Please get involved. May 20 June 2 June 11 July 7 July 26 Aug 4 Fightin Phils Happy Hour ballgame and buffet Zip-Lining at Camelback Mountain River Float Trip Night Just because we re not skiing doesn t mean we hibernate until next winter. There are dozens of activities planned for the off season. Check the Bulletin Board for Tuesday bike rides. We have a New York City bus trip, a Fightin Phils game, zip lining, River Float, golf outing, Friday Happy Hours and Wildwood Weekend planned to keep you involved. We also have some exciting trips on tap for next season, and Trip Night to help get you psyched. The Lodge has lots of open dates from the summer, too. Finally, several months ago I asked for comments on how we re doing, and what we could do better. Many of you responded, but I want to extend the invitation again. The Board needs to know what s on your mind, so please share. You can me at president@fdsc.org with your thoughts, or catch me at a meeting or event. **Don t forget that every Friday the Dutchmen are celebrating somewhere. see inside for Happy Hour locations. 3 Trippin Cherylene Shollenberger Hello there, skiers, boarders, my fellow travelers, All of our trips have taken place, and I am happy to report that we had a very successful travel season, in spite of the short winter and challenge of less snow in many areas. The Dutchmen have a tendency to bring snow to the destinations they travel to, or at the very least, make the best of every situation and have lots of fun! I thank all of our travelers and leaders for all they have done to make this season another successful one! I really appreciate your support over these last 5-6 years of being your Trip Director, and I know we will continue to have lots of fun traveling together. The 2017 Trip Log has been planned, with the possibility of some changes, due to various factors such as lodging availability, pricing, spring break dates, etc. In our May Ski Trails issue, everything should be finalized, so that signups for the European and Western trips may begin, like the past two seasons, at our June meeting. Here is our lineup as of this printing: 1) First Tracks - Jan Destination TBD Need one co-leader for this! 2) Elk Day Trip - Jan Sandy Kelly and Peter Galgano 3) EPSC Lake Placid, NY - Jan Dory Peterson and Bob Smith 4) Engelberg, Switzerland - Feb Stan Miller and Erick Confer 5) Telluride, CO - Feb Mar. 4 - Unconfirmed 6) Family Trip - Mar Destination and trip leaders needed. 7) Sugarloaf, ME - Mar Bob Zoppel and Kurt Fehl Next month, I will be confirming the western trip(s), after discussing with the leaders and our next Trip Director. You will see the finalized Trip Log 2017 in the June Ski Trails and the advertisement details for each trip in the July issue. Trip Night will be held at our meeting on Thursday, August 4th, in the Evergreen Club s outdoor facilities. Don t forget our fun Social Night at the Fightin Phils on Friday, May 20th, Happy Hour, Ballgame, and Buffet! I need your checks by April 15th to secure our tickets. ($28 per person, checks payable to FDSC). We thank the Staff at the Fightin Phils for the use of their Parking lot during our trips. Let s support our local team by attending this event and other games as well! Enjoy the springtime and all the activities and events that go along with this new season. Again, I appreciate your support in my fulfilling this position on the Board of FDSC. Hoping to see you soon! Cherylene VAIL Trip Recap! Vail lived up to its reputation of being a great destination. Thirty-nine Dutchmen descended over Vail pass a little after dark on Saturday night, March 5 to be welcomed by a multitude of red, white and blue lit trees. Sunday several of our group took advantage of the free mountain tours to get familiar with the vastness of the Vail mountains. This proved valuable when we received 8 of powder on Monday. That set up 4 glorious days of fresh snow and sunshine to follow! Several of the group took advantage of the fresh snow to do a sleigh ride up the mountain at neighboring Beaver Creek to have a 5 course dinner at Beano s Cabin. Others roamed Vail s art galleries, shops, restaurants and night clubs. The biggest attraction was the Colorado Ski Museum which featured the history of the 10th Mountain Division. These men not only fought heroically in WWII but those who made it back started the ski industry as we know it. Some of our group were lucky enough to hear a talk by one of the soldiers who fought at the battle of Riva Ridge in Italy as part of the 10th Mountain Division. The run down the front of Vail slope is named Riva Ridge in memory of that battle. One of our own, Karen Lott, battled through an injury early on Sunday to come back and ski the last three days using her one good arm. We all hope her shoulder repair and recovery will be smooth. We concluded our week with a Condo party where stories were shared. I thank the group for their cooperation and camaraderie throughout our trip. Hope to see you on another Dutchman trip or activity soon. Competition Eric Martin The results and awards for the 2016 Club Race will be given out at the April 7th meeting. We had a total of 31 racers take to the start house at the top of Timberline this year. Be sure to come on out to The Evergreen and see how you did against your FDSC peers! The snow is disappearing fast and most of us are already in Spring mode. However, it s not time to put those race skis away just yet! I like to do an end-of-season tune to clean up the edges, then protect the bases for the off-season by cleaning them with a good base cleaner and ironing on a hefty layer of storage wax. Eric Ski Trails 3
4 Lodge Craig Leister Well, we re not too sad to see this winter go. Next year is likely to be better and it s not too early to think of when you d like to rent next ski season. Give it some thought it only takes a 30% deposit to hold your dates. Now for spring/summer. There s plenty of availability through the first weekend in May beyond that, things are starting to heat up! Workers Weekend is May This is a fun time despite the cleanup activities. Whatever time you have to offer, we ll take! There s food, fun, wine and beer. We need volunteers, so if you re in, please sign-up at the meeting, talk to any director or drop me a line. June, July and August again brings racing weekends to the Poconos - Fri, June 3 - Axalta We Paint Winners 400 (NASCAR); Fri, Jul 29 - Pennsylvania 400 (NASCAR); Sat Aug 20 - ABC Supply 500 (INDY CAR). These are popular weekends, so if you want to go, let me know. Hopefully you ve all seen the Constant Contact with the link to the Lodge Survey. You can also use the Lodge Survey link on the club website homepage ( The 2nd Lodge meeting was held on March 17, a couple days after this article was written, so look for a report next month. Craig Social Director Diane Nolfe It s officially spring time and the days are getting longer and warmer. Now is the time to get outside and join some of the activities that the Dutchmen enjoy when they aren t skiing. April 24-Bus trip to NYC May 20-Fightin Phillies June 11-Zip line trip to Camelback $40 deposit due by June 2 July 16-River Float Please see the chairperson for more info and availability of these events If you are interested in organizing a social activity, please let me know. We are always looking for new ideas. Thanks again for your support. Go out and PLAY! Diane Welcome to Spring! I hope you ve been able to catch some late season skiing, even though the Eastern options have been scarce. The adult and junior programs of the FDSC Ski and Snowboard School have concluded. The adult ski program featured our new clinic format, where we focused on one topic for three weeks with the same instructor. This has proven very popular based on the feedback we ve received so far, so we expect to fine tune it and continue next year. On the snowboard side, we lost Hank Scovern to an injury part way through the season, but the rest of the staff stepped up and made sure the lessons continued. Our junior program was very popular, with more kids than ever participating. We are so lucky to have this talented group of dedicated instructors, apprentice instructors and registration personnel who give up precious ski and riding time to share their love of the sport with our members. Without these folks, our program would not exist. I am honored and delighted to work with them to make the program a success. Special thanks to our Ski School Director, Bip Smedley, who has devoted a tremendous amount of time, energy and thought to lead our group. Thanks also to the staff and instructors at Bear Creek, who give our juniors a great introduction to the sport. To make sure this program continues to meet the needs of our membership, it is crucially important that we get feedback from people in the program, telling us what works and what doesn t. For those of you that have not participated, please let us know what you might like to see offered that might convince you to join us. We are open to any and all suggestions. Send comments, complaints, ideas and spare $20 bills to skimeister@fdsc. org. See you on the bike, or the trail! Skimeister Dave McFarland Program Director Marge Ehst Dave April 7 Bring your computers with your trip pictures to share before and after the meeting. Elections will be held this night. After the meeting and elections, Patti Spitler will once again entertain us with one of her games for a fun night. May 5th meeting We will have a talent night entitled The Dutchmen Got Talent Or Not! I am looking for volunteers to sing, dance, tell jokes, do a skit, karaoke, instrument playing, etc. Time limit is 5 minutes MAX. There will be a team of judges and a prize will be given to the winner. This will be another fun night so come out and enjoy! Marge 4 Ski Trails
