2 Meeting Notices Board Meeting Thursday, December 19. Call Linda Elonen-Wright for location and time. General Membership Meeting Tuesday, December 3, at BW3 on Center Ridge Road in Rocky River. Social hour starts at 5 and the business meeting starts at 6pm. Raffle winner gets a free oneday trip. BW3 is just north of the Westgate Mall on Center Ridge Road. Guest Speaker Greg of Little Mountain Ltd will bring a variety of ski 'toys' to the December meeting. Little Mountain Ltd is a Sport Specialist. The emphasis will be cross country, downhill and snowboarding gear. There will be ample time to ask questions about the gear and proper clothing to wear with each activity, including helmets. Little Mountain Ltd also offers equipment for inline skating, biking and some water sports. This year, there was not a Ski Fair in the Cleveland area. Greg is one of the retailers who have graciously agreed to bring information to NASA Lewis Ski Club. Little Mountain Ltd is a sponsor of several Cleveland Metro Ski Council activities and has done so for many years. NASA Lewis Ski Club is a proud member of CMSC. Plan to attend to be better informed about the newer stuff. Please bring a friend -- especially the new skier -- to gather information on skiing or other fun activities. -- Annie Easley Missed the last Meeting? Well, so did Ed from Bavarian Village. However, he will be back for the January meeting. NASA ski vests are still available. Elise Allen, Karen Fashimpaur, and Linda Elonen-Wright put on an impromptu fashion show for this terrific looking vest. See Elise if you wish to order a vest. Charlie Snyder won the first one-day trip raffle. We have 172 memberships as of November 19. Of these, 28 of them are new members. The deadline for renewals was Friday, November 15. The cost for renewing has now gone up to $10 for a single membership and $15 for a family membership. I will have the updated membership roster out in the near future. The membership cards have been printed. I plan to have them at the December meeting. Contact Gene Addy, Membership Chair, at (w) for more information. Cross Country (a.k.a. Nordic) Well, as you know, the ski season is rapidly approaching and if you are like so many of us, you are looking forward to getting some exercise in the mountains of New York. We will once again venture to the Allegany State Park for two trips this season, the first one is scheduled for February 1. To celebrate the day's activities, we have planned a banquet in Olean. You can save a day s vacation and thirty minutes of sleep for each of these trips (unless you usually work Saturdays). You can expect to sleep real well Saturday night. If you have never tried Nordic skiing, you should. If you are a Nordic skier and have never skied Art Roscoe, you should. If you have skied Art Roscoe then I will be expecting your application. New York's Allegany State Park. This park is near Salamanca. The trail loops are rated in the national ski code of green circle (easiest) blue square (more difficult) and black diamond (most difficult). The diverse group of the skiers that joined us on this trip in the last few years all found plenty of skiing within their comfort zone and challenge. The trail network benefits from the slightly higher elevation. Often, it is snowing on the trails while it's drizzling at the lake down below. I couldn't tell you how many feet of snow have fallen on these trails since we started running this trip, but it has been quite a bit. We are expecting a good snowfall for this trip... and a good turnout as well. Keep the positive energy of lots of fresh powder and save five bucks by signing up early. See the flyer in the back of this newsletter for all the specifics. The Art Roscoe Ski Area has quite a groomed trail Don't get left on the porch. network (although it's not groomed for skating). The trails are located on the upper area of one of the mountains in Roger Meredith NASki Tips December, 2002

3 Fellow Alpine Enthusiasts The season is upon us and it is time to get ready for Skiing. White Face Mountain in Lake Placid and Killington in Vermont have both opened for the season. Resorts all over the east and west are opening. Even our local ski places have received snow and are getting ready to open. The clouds are delivering some snow locally, but not enough to ski. I know the snow is mixed with a little rain, but, just remember that rain is snow with a warm heart. Do not forget to take a look at our January trips. The first HoliMont, Holiday Valley, and Peek n Peak/Wilderness lodge trips still have spaces available. The Lake Placid trip is a great place to play in the snow. You will not regret going on this trip. All these trips are approaching very fast. Please sign up so you do not miss out. All the busses have been selected and the deposits will be sent in. The flyers are going through final review, and we should have all the flyers available at the next ski club meeting. These flyers will also be posted on our web site. I have to admit I am ready for this season. My snow guru in North Royalton has said that the aquatic entanglement of the lakes, streams and Canadian cold air will cause a significant amount of snow this year. With this in mind we should have great times during our day trips, weekend trip, and week-long trips. All the day trips and weekend trips still have openings. Please take a look at the flyers for the trips. We hope to have the flyers on our web site very soon. 4 * - Nordic skiing # - contact either Al Linne (Alpine) or Margaret Proctor (Nordic) for trips until trip coordinator has been named THE Skinny ON NORDIC EVENTS Our first cross-country ski outing will be at Chapin Forest on Sunday, January 5 th. Chapin is a great place to give cross-country skiing a try. Trails are groomed for both track and skate skiing and range from easy (flat) for beginners to moderate (gentle climbing) to difficult (steeper hills up and down). Rental equipment is available, there s a warming hut & restrooms, and lessons are offered. See the flyer in the back for details. Racing Report - News too fast to print The ski season, and therefore racing, is fast approaching. The team is ready to defend our reputation as the best little team in Metro. Word has it that Goodyear Ski Club will be making a comeback to the racing scene this season. That means we will have company in the "bottom feeding" division. I hope any of you who have thought of giving the gates a try will do so this year. I also hope that all of our eligible racers (there are 14 of us!) will make it to the race hill a time or two this season. Remember, it's fun, it doesn't hurt (really), and it will improve your freeskiing (or riding). I promise! The first thing you have to do is let me know you are interested, I'll give you all the details from there. The most important date to remember right now is December 26. That is the date of the CMSC Qualification Race. You don't need to preregister, just show up at Boston Mills at 6pm with your pick a day and $7, sign up in the Basketball Court (that's the ski school room above the rental shop in the lodge), and make two runs down Croyle Race Hill. If you don't have a pick a day, a special lift price of $24 is available. Skiers: Dave Gleason Lisa Lambert Mark Hyatt Elise Frankenfield (nee Allen) Bruce Frankenfield Sandy Mauer John Schubert Andy Mazkalnins Kathy Schubert Paul Senick Boarders: Bruce Frankenfield Mark Hyatt Joe Roche Kevin Spencer Aside from some adjustments Next we re off to Lake Placid, NY under the direction of Al Linne & Linda Elonen-Wright January 8-12, Then we ll have a one day trip to Wilderness Lodge in Watsbury, PA on Monday, January 20 th and then cap off January with an easy Saturday morning ski at North Chagrin Reservation on January 25 th. Now s the time to make your plans, wax your skis, str-r-r-etch those legs, and of course do a snow dance. Think Snow!! -- Margaret Proctor Remember, skiers and boarders alike can compete in the CMSC weekend series. Both have to qualify before they can race, since there are multiple classes, even for boarders now. The full season schedule is available on the CMSC website at Just click on the Racing link and you'll find information there on the Wednesday night race series plus all the other race related activities CMSC is famous for. If all that isn't enough to convince you to give this try, let me appeal to a more basic instinct. Each and every race has a major sponsor who provides prizes. The big ones, like skis, boots and bindings, are awarded based on finish position. Others are given out by random drawing. It's like they say though, you can't win if you don't enter! Below is our current racer roster. When you see us on the way to the hill, wish us luck, or tag along and give it try. Who knows? You might just get hooked! to the start times and race hills at several events, the only major change in racing this year is the creation of a new release form. Every racer will need to complete and sign one before the step into a start gate this season. I will try, but if I don't get one to you, you can fill one out on race day. Think snow, and see you on the race hill! Your Humble Race Chair, -- Mark Hyatt NASki Tips December, 2002

We ll leave LP around 7am on Sunday, January 12 th, and get into Cleveland around dinner time. Our bus will also supplement that schedule with 3 runs (roundtrip) of our own. More details on this later. Food: Munchies and some beverages will be provided on the bus going and coming. We will make at least a lunch time stop both going and coming. Food while we re in LP is on your own. The meal sign-up info on the next page is for the hotel and only if you re interested in that. The Ski Denton is located near Coudersport, Pennsylvania (county population of 18,000), about 15 miles south of the New York border and in the heart of Northern Pennsylvania s heavy snow country.
