2 December Website: President's message Well, the holidays are fast approaching, and that means that ski and riding season is just around the corner! We have three terrific one-day trips in January to Holimont, Peek n Peak/Wilderness Lodge, and Holiday Valley. The trip to Peek n Peak/Wilderness Lodge is a combined Alpine and Nordic trip on Saturday, January 16, and the other two are Friday trips. Check out the Holimont and Holiday Valley flyers in the newsletter. The Peek n Peak/Wilderness Lodge flyer will be out mid-december, so check your and the club web site for it. Our one-day trips are always fun; sign up and send in your money soon. I am proud to report that our V.P. Alpine, Ms. Stacey Bagg, represented our Club very well in the Ski Queen Pageant last month. Stacey made it all the way to the Queen s Court, and she finished 2 nd runner up. With nine queens competing from clubs all around the Cleveland area, that is just awesome. Congratulations, Stacey! I hope to see you at the meeting on December 1 at the 100 th Bomb Group. Wrap something from your home that you no longer want, and bring the gift to the meeting for our white elephant gift exchange. It promises to be a great time, and I am looking forward to it. Happy Holidays to you and your family, Lori Thanks to Buckeye Sports Center for enlightening us about what is new in ski equipment, and providing surprise guest Jeannie Thoren, recognized expert in women s skiing. Ms. Thoren provided an impromptu talk about issues in women s skiing and her observations on new ski equipment. 3 Website: December NASA Lewis Ski Club Activities White Elephant Exchange at December Club Meeting: At our general meeting in December, the club will hold our somewhat annual white elephant exchange. All you have to do to participate is bring a very nicely wrapped white elephant to the club meeting. The white elephants examples from previous years ranged from a goofy ski hat, to a beautiful framed picture of a pile of skis to some lovely etched glass wine glasses, to a silly Christmas bear to a Chia pet, to WHATEVER! So, you bring your gift; check in and get your number and place the gift on the table. Your number will determine the order in which you get to go and select another gift from the table during the exchange. You open it, and then you get one chance to go and select/steal from the previous openers! It has been a lot of fun in previous years - watching the current selectee steal away a treasure from the earlier openers! The first selectee gets final pickings! Please join in on the fun this year. Find that white elephant and wrap it up pretty and come on down! CIRCLEFEST, SUNDAY, DEC 6 th, 1-7 pm at University Circle. This is a great way to kick off the holiday season! Museums, schools, galleries and shops will feature special free events. Skate the Rink on Wade Oval for free. Horse drawn carriage rides are available. For more information see Contact Jan Neumann at janetteneumann@sbcglobal.net for meet up place and time. Test Fest 2010, January 13. Holimont, NY: For those that wish to test drive new equipment. Sponsored by Bavarian Village. See flyer in newsletter. 4 December Website: HALLOWEEN WEEKEND AT LAUREL HILL LODGE IN LAUREL HILL STATE PARK LOCATED - SOMERSET COUNTY, PA - Friday October 30th to Sunday November 1st. It was a pleasant November day when the twelve of us (Kathy McGinnis and Bob Pesti, Jan and Ray Neumann, Bruce Frankenfield and Elise Allen, Bill and Therese Telzrow, Janet and Matt Dubas, Lisa and Dick Straka) all eventually arrived at the lodge on Friday afternoon.the lodge was very spacious and comfortable with autumn scenery all around us even though the peak leaf color season had passed. With the Laurel Highlands guidebook we planned our activities and sightseeing places for the next two days. We had a short evening walk around the lodge area and hot dogs on the grill on Friday evening. One of us designated himself as the fire master maintaining a constant fire in the fire pit all weekend which was perfect to keep us warm as we congregated by the fire to chat. The rain on Saturday morning did not stop some of us from hiking the trail along the river. We were prepared, armed with ponchos and umbrellas. Sightseeing included a variety of activities such as driving around the area, Johnstown Flood Museum, Flight 93 crash site, Frank Lloyd Wright s Fallingwater and Kentuck Knob homes, and biking on the trails at Ohiopyle State Park. There were two breakfasts cooked by Ray Neumann with others helping, a Saturday evening feast with more than enough food contributed by everyone, and of course the Halloween party. Jan Neumann brought decorations and our resident ghost was hung on the slow moving ceiling fan. We dressed in our costumes and the evening party began with music, dancing, desserts, candy, and picture taking. We all enjoyed each other s company and had a fun weekend together along with an extra hour s sleep due to the time change. Since there are cross country skiing trails in the area as well as downhill resorts, i.e. Seven Springs and Hidden Valley, we thought about planning a cross country skiing weekend with the lodge as our accommodations for the ski season Trip Plans January 8: Holimont 1 - Flyer Out January 16: Nordic/Alpine combined trip, Peek-n-Peak/Wilderness lodge January 22: Holiday Valley 1 - Flyer Out January 23-30: Telluride, CO (Hurry reserve your spot!) February 5: Kissing Bridge February 19: Holimont 2 March 5: Holiday Valley 2 March 20-27: Park City, Utah (Sold out!) 5 2009 CMSC Ski Queen Pageant! Website: December The day started with all nine of the competing Queens meeting the committee at Reinecker s, where the initial interviews would proceed through the afternoon. Each queen was given a 15 minute interview with the panel of judges, and based on these a select five would be chosen. Queens and Committee at Reinecker s After the interviews were complete, we drove over to Ampol Hall where the final Ski Queen Pageant competition would occur. The final five were asked another three questions on-stage, from which the CMSC Ski Queen and her Court (first and second runners up) would be picked. Out of the 9 competing clubs, the NASA Lewis Ski Queen- Stacey Bagg- finished as Second Runner Up, making the Court! The CMSC Ski Queen was Becky Bertuzzi from Warren Ski Club, with the first runner up as Lindsey Crookshanks from HiRise. After the pageant ended the night continued with lots of food, drinks, and dancing! And a Special Thank You to everyone who came out to the party to support our Queen! The Queen and her Court 5
