2 October Website: President's message The weather is getting colder and the days are getting shorter, but we relish this because it means ski season is getting so close! We planned a few extra trips in this year to make sure everyone had a chance to sign up so make sure you get involved in the great deals! We d like your help in getting new members so please post the flyer on page 6 everywhere you think might reach new members. We ll also be having a special new member event as part of the November meeting so spread the word! Trip leaders are needed for Holimont (Fri. Jan 28 th ), and Holiday Valley 3 (Fri, Mar 4 th ), so make sure to let Tom know if you re interested even if you ve never ran a trip before we can teach you! (And remember, leading a trip means you get to ski FOR FREE!). Also make sure to visit us at the Boston Mills/Brandywine open house on October 15 th, 16 th and 17 th. We still need volunteers to help me promote our club and sell pick-a-days, as well. I also must admit I made a mistake and misplaced my current list of available volunteers Please me at staceybagg@gmail.com to remind me when you re available so I can put together a schedule for the weekend. Aside from the open house we still have some great fall events coming up most notably the KB Halloween Party and Queen Pageant! That s right, the events are combined this year so that means a FREE party with food and beer where you can support our queen Sue Rojeck! To offset costs for this free party, the queens are holding a very special 50/50 raffle make sure to buy some Queen raffle tickets from Sue at the October meeting or at the party. Speaking of the October meeting, we are inviting a special guest for you: Gordon from Geiger s Ski Shop will be joining us to show off some of his great gear for the season. SO, if you re dreaming of a shiny new pair of skis, make sure to come to the meeting and check out what Gordon can do for you! We will also have a representative from Little Mountain Ltd. at our November meeting, and our fitness expert Bob Laws will be giving some great advice for how to get in shape for the ski season soon! 4 October Website: CUYAHOGA VALLEY RAIL TO BIKE TRAIL RECAP On Sunday August 29 th Barb and Warren Knipple, Therese Telzrow and her sister Rosemary met Allen Porter at the Cuyahoga Railroad terminal in Independence on a beautiful late summer Sunday afternoon with our bicycles dressed to ride with helmets and riding gloves. With smiles on our faces, we gladly paid the $2 fare, which is a special deal for cyclists with a bike. Regular passengers pay $15 to $25 depending whether the ride in the traditional rail or vista cruiser car. All cyclists, many ages, families Our bikes were loaded into the baggage car and hung in place by the trainmen. On our cyclist rail car we watched the natural beauty from comfortable upholstered seats and met our fellow travelers enthusiastic about our coming bike ride. We got off the train and started our cycle journey at Indigo Lake and enjoyed a comfortable ride 4 miles on the tow path alongside the canal to Peninsula where we stopped for a selection of Winking Lizard appetizers and lagers. Refreshed and refueled we continued 14 more miles to Independence and the rail terminal parking lot to our cars. It is a pleasant ride at a comfortable cruising pace that allows conversation with light exercise. Although it was sunny and warm, our path was usually shaded. Article and photos by Allen Porter BEER SCHOOL RECAP The September 9th Beer school at Great Lakes Brewery was a complete success. We had 24 people in attendance which made for a great time. Our teacher was well versed in the the process & tasting of all the fine hop infused elixirs that we were able to part take & evaluate. We sampled 6 different brews that kept the interest of all pupils (along with a pretty good buzz). As promised, we were all given our Beer School graduate t-shirts along with nice little tasting glasses to take home & impress our family & friends with our thirst for knowledge & continuing education. All in all, I think everyone deserved an A+. Immediately following class, I was asked if we'll be doing it again next year. I think so... Article by Ray Neumann 4
