2 Dear Ski Club Members: Wow, have we got the ski season for you! Please check out the back of this newsletter for our trip flyers. Aspen week long trip, AND our weekend trip AND all but one of our 1- day trips are here also! Come on out and ski with us! On November 8 th, CMSC held their Winter Adventure Expo (better known to us as the old Ski Fair) at the Holiday Inn in Richfield. Our queen candidate, Victoria Briscoe, did a great job and made it to the semi-finals. Thanks, Victoria! We re proud of the way you represented our club! I d also like to thank all of the volunteers that helped staff our booth. We had fun talking to club members, old friends, perfect strangers and even some really strange people (I won t mention names!). I m told that after the queen competition, dancing went on until the early morning hours I m sure that was simply cross-training for the ski season! And, finally, not to get too personal, but I must ask, have you renewed your membership? The time is NOW! And Thank you to all of you who already have done that! -- Linda Elonen-Wright, Prez White Elephant Gift Exchange at Next Monthly Meeting! There will be a "whiteelephant gift exchange" at the next club meeting, Tuesday, 2 nd of December, Bring a nicely wrapped gift. Be creative! You ll get to grab one, too! It s up to you what these are. For suggestions, some may like to try for a winter/ski theme, but there are no guidelines. You will get to swap for one gift, so don t forget to bring your white elephant! --Tom Wallett FOR SALE: 2 pairs of Women's Nordica Ski Boots size 7 $50.00/each Please contact (216) ALPINE NEWS Fellow Alpine Enthusiasts: Have you been checking out the weather channel lately, the west, mid west, and north east have had white colors showing all over them. We have only been teased with some wet white stuff, but it s sure to come. With this current warm weather the lake will not freeze early. All you old timers know what this means. If the lake doesn t freeze early, then we get a good ski season due to lake effect. Yep, that dreadful word lake effect will be our friend. I know lake effect caused the Indians to lose the World Series a few years ago and for the Browns to lose a game or two. Again, this year the lake effect will be our friend. All trips except for one have been priced. Start planning today so you do not miss out on another anticipated great snow year. --Al Linne, Alpine VP NORDIC NEWS I would like to develop a Call-Up list so that short notice Nordic outings might be arranged in the Cuyahoga Metroparks. I will try to provide 24 hours notice of such an event, which would occur when snow conditions are favorable. We could have an outing on a Saturday, or a weekday afternoon if people can take a few hours of annual leave. E- mail me at Thomas.W.Haag@ grc.nasa.gov, or telephone me at (216) and indicate your preferred means of contact. Also, feel free to suggest good locations. Some Lewis Ski Club members have asked if there are any out-of-state Nordic trips planned for this season. At the present time there are none. Linda Elonen-Wright has suggested that members consider Holiday Valley for possible Nordic skiing. There are Nordic trails along the top of the mountain accessible via one of the chair lifts. Single use lift passes have previously been available from the Holiday Valley ticket window for such purposes. The club presently has bus trips to Holiday Valley scheduled on Jan 16, Jan 30, and March 12. Contact the appropriate trip coordinator to negotiate such an arrangement. Another member suggested the possibility of a one day drive-up trip to Wilderness Lodge, PA. Please contact me if you would be interested in such a trip, and we will try to pick a suitable date. It does not take many people to fill a car, so this may be a good option. --Tom Haag, Nordic V.P. Website: December, 2003

5 OTHER ACTIVITES-- Our final summer activity was coordinated by Tom Palisin as he led almost 40 warriors into battle. The paint balls were flying and everyone survived to fight another day. Please let Tom know if you want to go again! Talk has started about an ice skating outing; let me know your ideas. We have time to fit in other non-skiing activities this winter. Also, it is never too early to start planning activities for next year. The success of our camping/canoeing, minor league baseball and white water rafting outings has brought increased interest in repeating these events. If you have any ideas for other activities before the snow starts to fall or would like to start working on plans for next summer, please contact me. --Tony Shook, Activities Coordinator at SOLAR ORBIT COMPLETIONS (Birthdays) December Jesse Hall Dec 1 Joe Roche Dec 12 Bernadette Kan Dec 1 Cheryl Kovach Dec 13 Malcolm Wood Dec 1 Linda Cornell Dec 16 Sandy Reehorst Dec 3 Brittany Newman Dec 17 Mary Reveley Dec 3 Charlie Hyatt Dec 19 Emily Ferenc Dec 5 Lee Mason Dec 19 Jerry Hill Dec 9 Bruce Frankenfield Dec 18 Teresa Monaco Dec 9 Alice Martinez Dec 20 Kathleen Moran Dec 9 Mark Siedert Dec 22 Alex Ferenc Dec 10 Kyle Ferenc Dec 23 Victoria Briscoe Dec 11 Thomas McGannon Dec 23 Scott Holland Dec 24 Diane Stoffer Dec 26 Gene Walker Dec 27 Ryan Manthey Dec 28 Tony Shook Dec 29 Pat Brown Dec 30 Charlotte Buschur Dec 30 Betsy Snyder Dec 31 Ray of Sunshine Hello Skiers & Boarders The winner at our last Monthly Meeting at BW3 s 1-day ski trip Jerry Hill! Our condolences go to Penny Kirby on the loss of her mother. Please don t forget to let Nancy Piltch know of significant events in the lives of our club members. Thereby we can give out Rays of Sunshine! You can reach her at Nancy.D.Piltch@grc.nasa.gov, You missed OUT if you didn t go to the Warren Miller Movie- Journey! It was held Nov. 15 at the Akron Civic Theater. It was incredible!! SKI TIPS for SEASON: Early season skiing is exciting. Everyone is pumped and eager to get back on the slopes. It s time to try out that new equipment, and master those moves you saw in this year's Warren Miller movie. Remember the skier, I believe in Alaska, saying something to the effect of when I leave my hotel room I look back and hope I ll see it again tonight! Keep that in mind and limit your new tricks on the slopes and rails. The snowflakes are falling (they really are falling today) and it seems that winter has arrived. It s only a matter of days till we travel to the hills and let the lifts carry us to the top to make our first turns of the season. I think I hear the snow guns going right now! To make your early skiing/riding experience more enjoyable, here are a few tips that always help me to get a good start. 1. Make a list for your first day. Website: December, 2003

6 Skis/Board, boots, poles, helmet, goggles, gloves, jacket, Pass or Ticket, lunch/snacks, $$$, camera, friends. Cell phone love em or hate em, they can save lives in the backcountry but use them in private and keep it to a minimum. We are escaping from work! The best bet is two-way radios to keep track of your buddies, instead! 2. Stretch and start slow. Skiing/Riding uses muscles that lie dormant from April to November so take it easy the first day out. Doing ten nonstop moguls runs down your first day will land you immobile on the couch guzzling Ibuprofen. 3. Remember it s important to slowly work your way up to your March 2003 level. 4. Check out the silver helmet I m holding in the picture while I was on stage at the Winter Adventure Expo. That s because my best advice is to WEAR HELMETS! Plus, replace your helmets once you ve hit it hard! Just like a bike helmet they do need replacing each time the snow surface is still hard! And it might not show from the exterior that there is damage. Why take that risk when there is great new hi-tech helmets out there, just like the silver one I m holding (and not because it s silver and matches). Thanks again to Bavarian Village who sponsored this great outfit for the Ski Queen Pageant!
