2 - 2 - Issue 5, September Website: Hey Lewis Ski Club! How's everyone doin'? Rays of Sunshine September was another busy month for the Lewis Ski Club. We started up our regular club meetings and had a very informative talk about training, stretch and diet. Don't miss our next meeting, we're raffling off a free pass for one of our one day trips this winter. Alpine Valley and Boston Mills are both holding open houses October 14th, 15th and 16th. Along with that comes your chance to pick up a Pick-a-Day pass cheap AND get entered in a drawing for a free Pick-a-Day pass (see the Pick-a-Day article). We'll be having a booth and will need people to man it (hint, hint trip leaders). A sign-up sheet will be available at the next meeting. Our very own Barb Cool is vying for Ski Queen of Cleveland Metro Ski Council. Don't miss the pageant November 5th at Ampol Hall. Tickets are $20 and will be available at the October and November meetings. Drinks and refreshments will be provided so come on out, eat, drink, be merry and support Barb and your ski club. We're also planning an afternoon of ice skating at the Cleveland Heights Rec Center November 13th. Check out the article for more info. By the way, your ski club membership needs to be renewed. Why not fill out the membership form in the back of the newsletter today? See you at the meeting. 11 Website: - Issue 5, September Winking Lizard Bike 2, the Sequel Sept. 10 We had another beautiful Saturday for biking and lunch at the Winking Lizard. Tim, Kathy, Matt, Ed and Chip rode 10 miles south to North Akron and found Shangri-La. Along the way we found a place that certainly did not smell like heaven on earth. In fact it smelled more like, well, let's just say it took everyone's breath. There was a whole lotta coughin' goin' on during that stretch of the ride. We were warned before we left that it would take 15 minutes to ride through. It was more like 5 but just seemed like 15. It was a lot better going back must have been the wind. After the ride we had a 20 minute wait for a table at Winking Lizard and Chip had to take off. That left four of us swapping white water rafting stories and discussing the advantages of Cleveland over Dayton. -Tim Kurtz Hiking With Dogs Sept. 12 We had a great hike at the Rocky River Nature Center. Tim knew the trails well and did a wonderful job leading us through the woods for about an hour. When we returned to the nature center the dogs got to drink water from the dog fountain. There are two more dog hikes this month on October 3 and 10 (both Mondays at 5:30 p.m.) You can bring your dog or just yourself. The fall leaves should look beautiful. -Cheryl Alden Tim with Kala, Ed with Luke, Gene with Blitz, Cheryl with Sam, Charlie with Dallas and Chance 11

12 Issue 5, September Website: Tinker's Creek Hike Sept. 18 Trip Leaders: Victoria Briscoe & Cheryl Alden KUDOS to the hikers who managed to arrive on time for this while the trip leaders were still lost! Once everybody got there, we hiked along Tinker's Creek hoping to find the Gorge Scenic Overlook. There were some pretty views of the creek, rocks and a tiny waterfall. Eventually the trail became two trails & we hiked up the one that was a very steep hill. We got to the top and saw a parking lot and realized we were not going the right way. We hiked back down and went along the creek. The trail ended and we hadn't gotten to the overlook yet. We hiked back to our cars. Several of us drove to the overlook and we saw the creek down below. We made a second stop at the trail to Bridal Veil Falls. We found the falls and also saw a toad and some unique mushrooms. It was a fun hike. Cheryl Alden Scott, Victoria, Mutsuko, Ed with Luke (white German Shepherd), Gary, Mark, Lorrie Teresa with Lorrie s beagle, Joey Victoria finds a way to make the trail more fun 12
