Reflections President s Message Mary Ann Bedics President, Ptarmigan Ski Club 2017 has had both highs and lows for the Ptarmigan Ski Club. We said goodbye to Peter, Bud, and Joe, longtime loyal and active members of the club. Founded in 1947, the PSC celebrated its 70 year anniversary. Add with the new members who have recently joined, it looks like we may be around for another seventy years! If you look through the 2017 newsletters you can see all of the activities the club sponsors. You do not have to be a skier (anymore) to join in on the fun. You can see Phil Hublitz's "Year in Review" media presentation at the Knights of Columbus on December 12th. Always looking for new members and new ideas, it may be time for you to consider joining the board of directors. All positions are open and available. Elections will be held in March and it is not too early to start thinking about it. Wishing all of you a safe and peaceful holiday season. 3 Hike and Soup Party Sunday Nov 19, 2017 Recap by Mary Ann Bedics Hike: Ironton Rail Trail Almost fifty Ptarmigans hiked the Ironton Rail Trail on this sunny, brisk, fall afternoon. Our soup party host, Kathy Seufert, welcomed the hikers to her home afterwards. Everyone brought something to share: beverages, appetizers, soups, salads, and desserts. Thanks to all who participated in this annual event, started by Anneliese Stroudt about ten years ago. It has become a club tradition, a welcoming start to the holiday season. FREE -Two Sugarbush Passes FREE - 2 Sugarbush passes from Warren Miller's - Line of Descent Movie. Contact Debbie Koder at debkoder@yahoo.com if interested. Seneca Lake in the Finger Lakes, New York Friday May 18 - Sunday May 20, 2018 Cost is $ per person. Includes: Hotel 2 Nights, Bus and Tip, 2 Continental Breakfasts, 1 Lunch, 1 Dinner. Admission to Wine Festival Saturday and Beer & Distillery Tastings on Sunday. Contact Debbie Kroder debkoder@yahoo.com See Flyer Below for Details. Winter Sports "mini" Expo Recap by Brian Nuss November's 12th Annual Winter Sports Expo - "mini" edition - proved to be another success. Sure, the room was a little smaller than usual, and the exhibitors were fewer than the regular turnout, but you wouldn't have known it by looking at the crowd. Tickets started flying off the rolls the minute selling started, and the Live Auction proved to be a steal for those who participated. All in all, thanks to the generosity of our partner's donations and the efforts of our members and guests, the Expo yielded over $860 for the event! Not too shabby for a mini-expo at all. And, for those of you that are keeping track, that takes our grand total to over $13,000 raised since THANK YOU for your continued support, and THANK YOU to our partners for the donations!

5 Ptarmigan Book Club: Between the Covers Wednesday, December 6:30 pm Not So Different By Shane Burcaw Not So Different offers a humorous, relatable, and refreshingly honest glimpse into Shane Burcaw s life tackles many of the mundane and quirky questions that he s often asked about living with a disability, and shows readers that he s just as approachable, friendly, and funny as anyone else. Shane Burcaw was born with a rare disease called spinal muscular atrophy, which hinders his muscles growth. As a result, his body hasn t grown bigger and stronger as he s gotten older it s gotten smaller and weaker instead. This hasn t stopped him from doing the things he enjoys (like eating pizza and playing sports and video games) with the people he loves, but it does mean that he routinely relies on his friends and family for help with everything from brushing his teeth to rolling over in bed. Location: Mary and Ralph s, 556 Parkside Court, Allentown, PA BYOB and an appetizer/dessert to share (if you want) Contact Mary at or marynlaronge@gmail.com Wednesday, January 17, 6:30 pm Beneath A Scarlet Sky By Mark Sullivan Based on the true story of a forgotten hero, the #1 Amazon Charts bestseller Beneath a Scarlet Sky is the triumphant, epic tale of one young man s incredible courage and resilience during one of history s darkest hours. Pino Lella wants nothing to do with the war or the Nazis. He s a normal Italian teenager obsessed with music, food, and girls but his days of innocence are numbered. When his family home in Milan is destroyed by Allied bombs, Pino joins an underground railroad helping Jews escape over the Alps, and falls for Anna, a beautiful widow six years his senior. In an attempt to protect him, Pino s parents force him to enlist as a German soldier a move they think will keep him out of combat. But after Pino is injured, he is recruited at the tender age of eighteen to become the personal driver for Adolf Hitler s left hand in Italy, General Hans Leyers, one of the Third Reich s most mysterious and powerful commanders. Now, with the opportunity to spy for the Allies inside the German High Command, Pino endures the horrors of the war and the Nazi occupation by fighting in secret, his courage bolstered by his love for Anna and for the life he dreams they will one day share.
