2 The Patroller Education Conference 2009: A Step into the Future of Patrolling From The Desk Of Tim White The new Patroller Education Conference 2009 (PEC) is representative of the changes taking place at NSP. With a compelling list of sponsors, featured speakers, onmountain programs and demonstrations, and a patroller skills competition, PEC 09 is shaping up to be a world-class educational event. Perhaps more importantly, PEC is positioned to play a critical part in the advancement of patrolling. By leveraging the combined knowledge of the NSP Board and leadership with patrollers from all regions of the country we can share best practices and work collectively to identify future challenges and develop strategies to address them. What better place to hold a ski patrol conference than at Snowbird, Utah, where President (and former patroller) Bob Bonar, Patrol Director Peter Schory, Mountain School Director Maggie Loring and our host, the Intermountain Division, have promised to assist in every way possible to make this event a success. The stars are lining up. I hope you will consider attending what promises to be a step into the future of patrolling. Sincerely, Tim White Executive Director, NSP

3 FEATURED SPEAKERS AND SEMINARS Michael Berry President, National Ski Areas Association Michael Berry has served as president of the Colorado-based National Ski Areas Association (NSAA) since January 1993 and has worked in the mountain resort industry for more than 30 years. NSAA is the trade group for ski area owners and operators and represents 325 alpine resorts that account for more than 90 percent of skier/snowboard visits nationwide. In his role at NSAA, Berry oversees the association s operations including regulatory issues, research on industry trends, slope safety, and educational and market research programs. In his presentation, Berry will provide a behind-the-scenes analysis of the 2007/08 ski season and provide insight into what went well and what didn t. He ll also discuss future challenges for the ski industry and opportunities, including how the NSP can forge a stronger relationship with area management in the coming years. Dean Cardinale Snow Safety Director, Snowbird Ski and Summer Resort Dean Cardinale is a full-time avalanche forecaster for Snowbird Ski & Summer Resort. Working in one of North America s m o s t a v a l a n c h e - p ro n e ca n y o n s, Cardinale has been instrumental in bringing innovative rescue technology and training to individuals and groups at both the national and international level. In addition, Cardinale also serves as president of Wasatch Backcountry Rescue, a volunteer organization made up of snow safety professionals from nine Utah ski areas that is dedicated to mountain rescue. Cardinale is regularly featured in the media as an expert in mountain and avalanche safety. PEC attendees are invited to go on-hill with Cardinale and his staff for an up-close look at safety issues facing avalanche pros and an avalanche rescue demonstration. Wally Shank Senior Risk Consultant, Wells Fargo Since starting in the ski industry in 1965, Wally Shank and has performed virtually every job in the business. He s worked for Wells Fargo as a senior loss control specialist for the past 15 years. There, Shank provides loss control and risk management consulting to ski resorts across North America, specializing in guest safety, employee safety, passenger tramway safety, property and asset protection, and OSHA compliance. He also provides employee training to ski areas and is a frequent speaker at workshops and seminars across the country. As an NSP member for 35 years, Shank knows first hand about the risk of injury to patrollers. In his presentation, he will provide national statistics about the frequency and severity of patroller injury and the steps that can be taken to minimize the chances of risk. Jasper Shealy, Ph.D. Professor Emeritus, Rochester Institute of Technology Former ski patroller and Professor Emeritus at the Rochester Institute of Technology, Jasper Shealy, Ph.D., has been studying ski and snowboard injuries for more than 30 years and is recognized as the leading expert in his field. The author of numerous papers about injury-related topics, ranging from knees to heads, Shealy has most recently been involved in studies related to freestyle terrain injury. Much of his work stems from an ongoing study at Vermont s Sugarbush Ski Area, where he s been co-researching injury statistics with Dr. Robert Johnson and Carl Ettlinger for more than 20 years. Dr. Shealy is currently the chair of the ASTM F27 Committee for Snow Skiing and is a U.S. technical delegate for the International Standards Organization (ISO) relating to snow skiing. In his presentation, Shealy will discuss his most recent research on ski injury trends and will explore how patrollers and safety advocates can use the information to advance the cause of skier/snowboarder safety. Jeannie Thoren Expert on Women and Skiing Named One of the 100 Most Influential Skiers of the Century by Ski magazine, Jeannie Thoren has spent the last 30 years studying women s anatomy and the way it affects skiing. As a competitive skier and instructor, Thoren has pioneered the notion that the wrong equipment is the biggest factor that keeps women from progressing on the slopes. She s been sharing her expertise and helping female skiers reach peak performance since 1980, when she started on a quest to improve her own skiing through equipment modification. Participants who sign up for Thoren s program will be in for a fun and informative evening workshop in addition to a full day of ski instruction with one of the most influential women in the sport. Dr. Mike Torry, Ph.D. Director, Biomechanics Research Laboratory, Steadman Hawkins Research Foundation Dr. Torry is the director of research in the Biomechanics Research Laboratory of the world-renowned Steadman Hawkins Sports Medicine Foundation in Vail, Colo. In 1996, Dr. Torry joined Steadman Hawkins as a research fellow and two years later was promoted to his current position. He has published several papers dealing with the many aspects of clinical and applied biomechanics including the EMG analysis of shoulder rehabilitation exercises, the evaluation of osteoarthritic gait, the benefits of functional knee bracing for athletes, and functional performance after ACL reconstruction. In his presentation, Dr. Torry will discuss the effects of sport injury and aging on the human body as well as steps that can be taken to avoid injury and improve stamina and longevity in the aging patroller athlete. Dr. Rob Williams Pediatric Anesthesiologist and Critical Care Intensivist, University of Vermont; Staff Member, Fletcher Allen Health Care, Burlington, Vt. Dr. Williams has been the medical advisor to Vermont s Smugglers Notch Ski Patrol for the past 10 years and is an avid backcountry skier and snowboarder. For the past six years Dr. Williams has directed the Vermont Snowsports Research Team, an advocacy and research group that promotes the responsible use of snowsports helmets. Dr. Williams started the PHAT program (Protect Your Head at All Times) as a positive, non-coercive plan designed to encourage voluntary helmet use through role models and promotional materials. The program was designed as a collaborative industry/academic effort in conjunction with Smugglers Notch and the Vermont Ski Areas Association. As a result, more than 90 percent of targeted children and 70 percent of targeted adults currently wear helmets at the ski area. Dr. Williams will speak to patrollers about his medical research, confirming the role of responsible ski helmet usage in the reduction of head injuries. He will also explain how patrollers are an important liaison for distributing information on the benefits and limitations of helmets to the public.

4 Lend us Your Ear The NSP leadership wants to hear from you. That s why Board members, program advisors and many organizational leaders will be in Snowbird for PEC to meet and greet the membership and discuss our organization. This three-day open forum with NSP leaders will bring added value for conference attendees and the NSP, and will provide a forum for open, honest dialogue, as we all navigate our future together. The Board s Mid- Winter Meeting will also take place during PEC, and all conference attendees are invited to attend some or all of the meeting. Test Your Mettle: The 1st Annual Patroller Challenge at PEC 09 The NSP is calling all divisions to put their talent to task in the 1st Annual Patroller Challenge, a fun and educational competition that will take place on the slopes of Snowbird during PEC 09. The Challenge: Designed as a fun way to identify the best of the best, teams of patrollers will be challenged to arrive at the scene of an injury, assess and treat the injured, and transport the party down the hill. Teams will be judged in three skills categories: scene assessment; injury management; and transportation. The Strategy: This is not a race! However, teams will be judged on their ability to assess, treat and complete the course seamlessly and efficiently. Judges will be located throughout the course, scoring competitors on their toboggan handling skills, with others on-course, scoring each team s performance. Final details will be announced once the course is set with considerations given to the terrain and conditions. The Purse: Ski gear and equipment valued at well over $1,000 will be divided between the winning and runner-up teams. But more importantly, the winners take home the coveted NSP Patroller Challenge Cup and recognition of being the best of the best of not only your patrol and division, but the entire NSP! Take the cup home sleep with it, drink out of it, show it off. But remember: You re only as good as your last performance. The traveling trophy will be up for grabs once again at the 2010 Patroller Challenge. Entry: Only patrollers registered for PEC 09 may enter the challenge. Teams may consist of up to three patrollers. Limit 15 teams. For more details or to sign up for the PEC Patroller Challenge, contact Chris Bourne at cbourne@nsp.org or

5 SKI INSTRUCTION AT PEC 09 PEC attendees have two exceptional opportunities to enhance ski and snowboard skills with Snowbird s top instructors and to create memorable experiences with fellow patrollers. Lessons with Snowbird pros will be offered the mornings of April 16 and 17 beginning at 8:30. Lessons will be tailored to different levels of skiers, and participants will enhance their skills on some of the best terrain in North America alongside one of the most skilled instructional staffs. Lessons are scheduled on a per-day basis and include a lunch voucher. Cost is $80 per person per day for patrollers or spouses. Participants MUST sign up in advance on the conference registration form in this brochure in order to ensure an adequate number of instructors. For those who want to go beyond traditional ski school, conference attendees also have the option to participate in Snowbird s exclusive mind-body-spirit lesson. Intermediate and advanced skiers and riders who participate in this special program will learn more about who they are as athletes through morning yoga and on-hill coaching that taps not just into the physical, but the mental side of skiing and boarding. The program will be offered April 16 and 17 from 8:30 a.m.-1 p.m. and costs $80 per person per day. Sign up in advance for the mind-body-spirit lesson on the registration form in this brochure. A special thanks to Maggie Loring and the Snowbird Mountain School ( skiing & snowboarding ) for assisting the NSP with the ski instruction programs at PEC 09. On-Mountain Demonstrations PEC attendees will have the opportunity to take part in a number of educational on-mountain demonstrations. These include accident investigation techniques with MountainGuard insurance, an opportunity to test the new Cascade Trauma One Toboggan, and a backcountry rescue segment brought to you by the Mountain Travel and Rescue Program. Stay posted to nsp. org for more information on these and other on-snow sessions at PEC 09.
