1 Bastille Day Croquet Club News Fantasy Ball Dear Fellow Residents, The State Government announced, on 27 August, its response to the Law, Justice and Safety Committee s March Report into Alcohol-Related Violence. The Government did not support 10 of the 68 recommendations. It supported in principle a further 22 recommendations. However some of their comments in these cases could see the Committee s recommendations not in fact being delivered. Local residents are against the application by Villa Noosa to trade until 5 am each day. The Committee recommended extended trading hours for hotels like Villa Noosa should be no later than 1 am Sundays to Thursdays and no later than 3 am Fridays and Saturdays. The Government did not support this recommendation. It proposes to extend the current moratorium on extended trading hours, which is due to end in September 2010 to 2013, i.e. until after the next election. They believe that this will allow sufficient time to develop and trial place-based management plans and undertake an evaluation of the effectiveness of the plans in reducing the incidence of alcohol- related violence in local areas. They also propose to retain the status quo for closing times at least until the place-based management approach has been trialled and evaluated. Discussions continue with Council regarding the new planning scheme, sharks in the canal and issues regarding the lock, weir and pumping system. Russell Green will address our Annual General Meeting to provide an update on these and other issues. I will also keep you informed on any decisions on these and other issues by s sent to those on our mailing list. To join the mailing list please visit our website The Noosa Waters Residents Association and the Neighbourhood Watch will hold joint AGMs at 7 pm on Tuesday 19 October at the Lutheran College Chapel. Councillor Russell Green will provide an update on the issues previously mentioned. The Police will also be providing a report on matters that affect Noosa Waters and nearby areas. The AGMs will provide an excellent opportunity for you to hear from our local representatives and ask them questions. There are four positions, which will be vacant at the NWRA AGM, vis President, Vice President, Treasurer and Secretary. The existing position holders for all but the Secretary position are available for re-election. Harvey Williams, our Secretary, will not be standing. I would like to thank Harvey for all the excellent work he has done for the Association over many years. The work done by other Committee members and volunteers is also very much appreciated. To ensure that your Association and the Sports and Social Group continue it is essential that we have nominations for all positions particularly the position of Secretary. For details about the Secretary position, please contact Harvey on A number of people are appointed by the Management Committee to assist them with various activities. Please let me know if you can assist in any way. It is very important that we have new people on the Committee so that they can gain experience, which will ensure the continuity of the Association activities. Neighbourhood Watch will also be conducting their elections. The Sports and Social Group has had a fantastic year. Many people are now regularly involved in the various activities on offer and many new friendships have developed. If a Group, you are interested in, is not active please contact any Activity Group Convenor (details on the last page) or myself for assistance to get it started. The photos in the Newsletter show the fun had at the regular social events. At the Fantasy Ball 81 guests dressed up as their favourite character, celebrity or fantasy and danced the night away to the 20-piece Brisbane Symphonic Band at the Majestic Theatre. The Awards for various categories were called Oscars, after Rob and Marilyn Van Wegen s cat. Oscar has become internationally famous for riding around our canals on a stand up paddling board with Rob doing the hard work. Owners and long-term tenants of properties in Noosa Waters are eligible to become members of NWRA. Our goals include the protection of and improvement to our lifestyle and the amenity of our Estate. You can join via our website or by contacting Cathie Martin on The cost is only $13 to belong to both NWRA and Neighbourhood Watch. The Sports and Social Group operates under the Rules of the Association and in accordance with its insurance policies. Members of NWRA can access the Sports and Social Group part of our web site. All members are very welcome to participate in the many activities and social events that are available. AGM Gary Trevithick President

These bridge clearances are approximately 4.5 metres and 2.5 metres respectively from Gibson Road when the canal water level is about 400 mm below the top of the adjacent revetment wall. Further celebrations included an open invitation for friends to join Joan and Claude for a traditional French breakfast on Gympie Terrace and a fabulous party in the evening. Monster Garage Sale There will be a monster garage sale held at the Croquet Club in November. Please save and donate any excess goods and chattels for this event. Your generosity will be much appreciated and will help to continue with the upgrading of these special facilities, for the benefit of us all. Notices will be delivered nearer the time with collection details and will be posted on the Noosa Water website. Thanks to NWRA and S&SG for all your support throughout. Walk bridge between Seahorse Place and Mermaid Quay This bridge has approximately 4.5 metres clearance when the canal water level is about 400 mm below the top of the adjacent revetment wall. Lock The lock is approximately 15m long, 4.5m wide and 2.8m depth. For practical purposes the largest boat that should use the lock would be 12m (35ft) long 3.6m (12ft) wide. Note: All bridges are curved and dimensions given are the maximum clearances available. Information supplied by Warren Burrows. Happy Boating! 2

Please call Cathie Martin on for more information Delights of Spring This magnificent orchid growing on the estate was taken on a beautiful spring day earlier this month. Thank you for sharing this elegant flower with us all. Croquet Club News Dawning of a New Era for Noosa Croquet Club and Noosa Waters Sports & Social Group! At long last, with thanks to Noosa Waters Residents Assn and all others whose support and encouragement made this feat (or should I say Seat??) possible, Noosa Croquet Club was proud to present the official opening of the Club s long awaited extensions including their own toilet facilities. With the additional benefit these, new lighting in the car-park, and much anticipated, new big screen TV, the Club looks forward to being able to offer the facilities to NWRA Sports & Social Group for many more activities - especially in the evening. Meetings and social activities can now go beyond the previously limited by comfort time, of around 2 hours! The opening was attended by State Member of Parliament Glen Elmes, Sunshine Coast Regional Councillor Russell Green and over sixty croquet club members and friends, including Noosa Waters residents. In his welcoming speech club president Andy Hallinon said that the club had been on its present site for fifteen years and this was the first time it had ever had its own facilities, having had to share the public facility off Walter Hay Drive and that collectively the club members had walked to and from there over 7,000 kilometres during that time! Send a photo of your favourite spot to editor@noosawaters.org. Landscaping If you have missed the soothing flow of the fountain while walking around the estate lately the pump has finally ceased working and has been put on the council s list of things to attend to. It will either be fixed or replaced. Landscaping has purchased a small high pressure cleaner to help with keeping the fountain clean in between professional cleans which are sub contracted out by the council and take place every six months. Spring brings many jobs for our volunteers so if you have an hour or so and would like to offer your services contact Sharon Woodford or John Langdon e: landscaping@ noosawaters.org The extension has been built following the receipt of a substantial grant from the Queensland State Community Benefit Gambling Fund and the president thanked state representative Glen Elmes for his support during the various application processes. He also thanked Cr Russell Green for his support and also welcomed him to the club for the first time in his new role as the Noosa Croquet Club s patron. These extensions were built on time and to budget and the club is especially indebted to two club members, project manager, Paul Baker and his deputy Fred van Vugt for their considerable input and work before, during and after the construction stage. Cr Russell Green thanked the club for honouring him with the post of patron and said that it is important for all elected representatives to maintain a close relationship with community groups and to support their activities. Glen Elmes MP expressed his delight that the state had been able to substantially support the extensions. 3

This story was sent to me by Noosa Waters residents Jan and Roger Edwards and reflects the quality of the advertisers we have supporting our newsletter and web site. Where possible these businesses should be supported by us all. Hi Cathie It could help residents if this story was wider known. One of our irrigation pumps connecting a 3000 litre holding tank burst its pressure valve. Within a couple of minutes I was ankle deep in water and unable to stop the leak. Jan, my wife went to yellow pages (we should have gone to the newsletter or website I know) and found the only listed Noosa 24 hour emergency plumber. He was unable to help. The next plumber was John O Shea from Celtic Plumbing. He left immediately and was here in 7 minutes. He had the appropriate spare in his van and was able to temporarily halt the flow of water. He intends to return tomorrow before lunch with the necessary part for a permanent fix. He was a lovely bloke, reliable and efficient. As he was leaving he revealed that he d done quite a lot of work for you and Howard and would dearly love to be the plumber of record for Noosa Waters Residents Association. He is also an advertiser in the newsletter. Regards, Roger Edwards 6
