2 PRESIDENT S REPORT Management backs de-amalgamation Dear Members and Residents, De-amalgamation The Association s members have not voted on a position that the Association should adopt on de-amalgamation. However, the Management Committee, in their individual capacities, think that de-amalgamation is in the best interests of Noosa Waters residents. This view has been formed after many years experience working with both the former Noosa Council and current Sunshine Coast Council. There are many reasons why we support a Yes vote, including the reduction in services under the Sunshine Coast Council - see the Landscaping report later in this Newsletter for some examples. Boat parade Our 15 th annual Boat Parade was the best ever. A lot of people put in a big effort into decorating their boats and homes. It was a fantastic sight watching the well lit boats follow the Coast Guard, which had its fire hose working. There were many parties in homes, parks and vacant blocks. Congratulations to the winners of the home and boat lighting competitions. Thank you to all who participated or watched and to the Boat Parade Committee for making it such an enjoyable evening. We will be conducting a survey of members to ascertain your views on which date we should hold the Parade this year. Canal bed and revetment wall problems You are no doubt aware that there are problems (full details are available to members on our web site) with some revetment walls being undermined and collapsing as a result of what we believe is slumping in the canal bed. This problem was brought to the Sunshine Coast Council s attention in July We have been trying to get them to urgently fix the problems since then. It has been very frustrating! In October 2012 the Council suddenly advised that they now believed that they were not responsible for maintaining the canal bed, which is Crown land. The State Government have advised that the Council is responsible for maintaining the canal bed. The Council maintains, from general rates, all other waterways and lakes in its region. The issue of who is responsible for maintaining the canal bed has again been referred to the State Minister, via Glen Elmes MP, for determination. We held a meeting on 11 December 2012 with Council s engineers, their consulting engineers and our engineers. It was agreed that Council would engage and pay our engineers to conduct geotechnical investigations to assess further the stability of the revetment walls within Noosa Waters. The broad scale geotechnical report will address foundation conditions, canal bed profiles, foundation stability and remedial options to effect stabilisation of revetment walls. The Council also propose to look at all properties with infrastructure and large trees within 4.5m landward of the revetment wall. Canal front owners should be aware of the restrictions of what cannot be done within 4.5 m of revetment walls. Details are available on our website see section 5 in the 10 December revetment wall update under the canal & lock tab. The speed limit in the canal is 4 knots (walking speed) and no wash. This is designed to avoid any damage to revetment walls and other property. Your co-operation in observing the speed limit is appreciated. Those few boat owners who exceed the speed limit and create large damaging wash should be aware that the Water Police have requested that details be sent to them. The form to report problems to the Water Police is available on our web site. It is currently expected that the geotechnical report will be available by mid February. Short term holiday rentals Over the Christmas/New Year period there were problems with noise and other inappropriate behaviour with tenants of a short term holiday rental who partied regularly up to 6am. The police were called and assisted with their eviction. Significant damage was done to the home and contents. If you experience problems with noise and any other inappropriate behaviour please call the Police direct. Home and content insurance costs We have been advised of very large increases occurring in the cost of insuring homes and contents in Noosa Waters and elsewhere on the Sunshine Coast. In the next few weeks we will survey members, on a non-identifiable basis, and then contact insurers with a view to seeking better insurance rates. Gary Trevithick President Issue 66 Summer Edition
3 LANDSCAPING REPORT FOR 10 years Sharon Woodford on behalf of the NWRA organised a landscaping programme in conjunction with the local Council and volunteers from Noosa Waters to maintain a higher level of care for the gardens and parks in the estate. Since Sharon resigned in May 2011 the frequency of Council services as shown in the table below are much less frequent. John Langdon and a small band of dedicated volunteers have been working diligently in all areas of the estate to ensure the gardens and parks are kept in good order. Current circumstances have made it much more difficult to keep the estate in pristine condition. The table below shows the difference in service levels imposed by the Sunshine Coast Regional Council for Noosa Waters. John s main area of expertise has been upgrading the entry statements in Noosa Waters. New members may not realise that John has traversed every entry point in the estate and has upgraded/rendered the entry statements, and colour coded the same with new stainless steel signs. If the NWRA had not been proactive in this area the estate would look old fashioned and tired. Council will not replace infrastructure to the same visual quality when something requires replacement. The entry at the western side of Riverbreeze Avenue is one that will need replacement soon as it is badly damaged by tree roots. If this were replaced by Council it would be a basic sign, as on the eastern corner, without the stonework. With careful planning of funds, we can replace degraded infrastructure with part financial help from Council when required. The major upgrading of Noosa Waters Estate infrastructure has been achieved by utilizing the NWRA members funds, so thank you for joining our association. Volunteers are needed for certain gardening jobs throughout the year such as weeding, spreading mulch etc. If you would like to help just register on the website at under Noosa Waters Landscaping Volunteers in the group activity section and you will be contacted by with details of what s on, when and where. Item Maintenance Frequency New Council for last 13 years imposed frequency Mowing cuts per year Edging times per year 24 4 Hard surfaces blown or swept Yes N/C Garden bed maintenance Every 3 or 4 weeks depending N/C on the season Hedging Every 3 to 4 months N/C Weed control spray p.a. 4 SPORTS and SOCIAL GROUP NEWS Baby boomers packed the place Helen Lawson and Mike Pallot looked remarkable ABBA gave us a song and dance Welcome one and all to another year of games and celebrations. One hundred and one Baby Boomers packed into the Noosa Convention Centre at Australis on Hilton Terrace to dance the night away on Saturday September 15. The costumes were amazing. The food was excellent and Michelle Brown sang everyone s favourite tunes from the 50s, 60s and 70s. It was an incredible night of fun and laughter. Our 2013 big event Masquerade Madness will be held on Saturday September 14 at the same venue, so keep this date free and book early to avoid missing out. Warren & Shirley Stolmack Deirdre and Maurice Williams The hippies spread peace Christmas lights winners Judging of the Christmas lights competition was carried out on December 17 and 18. Here are the winners pictured below. Issue 66 Summer Edition
5 SPORTS and SOCIAL GROUP NEWS Coast Guard leads the Christmas flotilla Our 15th Annual Boat Parade was the best ever Boats gathered behind the Coast Guard and last year s prize winners at 6.45pm Friday December 21 to start the Christmas Flotilla. It was a spectacular sight. The weather was perfect with all the boats decorated with flashing lights using all kinds of themes. Don Reed won best decorated boat for 2012 and will lead this year s procession alongside the Coast Guard. Exciting events planned for 2013 The Sports and Social Group committee have planned four very different and exciting events for your enjoyment this year starting with the annual birthday party at the Croquet Club on March 22. This party provides a wonderfully relaxed atmosphere for long standing residents and newcomers to the estate to meet their neighbours, gather information and make new friends. Because so many people enjoyed the Operatif! performance at Lake MacDonald last year, the committee is in the process of organising another cultural event for May. At this stage it looks as though there will be a coach party to see the Ten Tenors at the Caloundra Events Centre on Friday, May 17. Details will be available on the website when finalised. Christmas Crackers on Sunday July 14 will be our interpretation of a Christmas in July theme, along the lines of a BYO food and drink picnic from 1pm at the Croquet Club. The facilities there have been remodelled and will be perfect for our occasion. We are currently looking at all the options to bring you some fabulous live music on the night of our big event for the year, Masquerade Madness. This dinner dance will be open not only to Noosa Waters Residents but also their friends. So please make sure to place group bookings early as numbers will be limited by the size of our venue. We will send an to members when tickets are available on the web site at Any problems with booking should go to Shirley Stolmack: or Deirdre Williams: / Issue 66 Summer Edition
6 SOLD and BOUGHT Same time, same place, same scenario Here we have a Master Builder and an ordinary couple recognising great opportunities in the property market within the estate. Elaine & Max Keegan own Lifetime Constructions and Max is a Master Builder. They sold their 1 year old waterfront home early last year at 20 Seahorse Place. The land they purchased was in The Anchorage and has 28 metres of canal frontage. Early last year Deirdre and Maurice also sold their oneyear-old waterfront home at 13 Seahorse Place. They then purchased a very large canal block on the Anchorage and contracted Metricon to build their new home. Both couples are renting in the estate until their homes are ready to move into. The July issue of the newsletter will show the finished homes and a few comments from their respective owners. Written by Cathie Martin, Tom Offermann Real Estate New activity groups are being added to our website all the time.
