Haddonfield NJ WJRC Page 1 Minutes of the West Jersey R/C Club September 14, 2010 The meeting was called to order by the president at 8:04pm. In attendance there were 35 members and prospective members. The minutes of the August meeting were read and accepted by all present. Bob Lanard the club s treasurer gave the checking account transactions and with all entered gave the ending balance in the club s account. Bob also stated that with the change in tax laws and the club being tax exempt the club needed to fill out a 990 form for income purposes. The roll of prospective members was taken by Paul Gross with Anthony Della Vecchia being accepted into the club. Derek Earnhart and Jason Faulcon both attended their second meeting while Frank (Lucky) Macy sat in on his first meeting. Old Business Don Romano of the field committee said that the field suffered some damage due to four wheelers but has been repaired. Don also said that the runway has been sprayed for weeds. The blades have been replaced on the Sears mower and both of the mowers are in good shape. The roads have been filled and graded into the field by Mr. Landolfi. Mantua Twp has started to do some work on Booty Mill Road, Neil will follow up with Glen at the garage to see where they stand. Chris Green found the information needed to update the buddy boxes with a cost of approximately $ A motion was made to purchase the equipment and passed by all present. The president reminded everyone that the Ray McCloy Memorial Picnic will be on September 19 th and if possible please bring a food donation. New Business The president wanted to let everyone know that nominations for club officers will start next month. Tom Voorhis announced that he will be stepping down from the club s editor in December and passing it onto JJ DeLucia. The president reminded all that Ducted Fan Sunday will be on October 17 th. With no further business Bob Lanard ran the 50/50 with Mike Simmons winning (again) $ The raffle was won by Bill Froeder taking home a Four Star 40. Mike Simmons chose an OS 60 engine as second runner up with Tom Monaco receiving some dremel tool accessories as the third runner up. 2 West Jersey Wind 2 At The Field. Sunday 9/19/10 Club Picnic: There was a great turnout of members and their families for the Club Picnic and thankfully the weather was fully cooperative. Dave and Kim Morgan did a fantastic piece of work with the food and the tent set-up; the quality, variety and preparation of the food was superb. The Morgan's tent not only protected all the food but added a very nice touch to the event. They also provided several important non-food items for our Picnic. As if that wasn't enough, Kim Morgan did non-stop barbequing throughout the day. That was one whole heck of a lot of work! Thank You Kim!!! Added thanks is due Dave and Don Romano for having (and keeping) the field in great shape; and, to Paul Gross for getting the rolls, ice and several other items needed for the picnic to be just right. We had a great Club Picnic because of the efforts of a few hard working, generous individuals. Remember to say "thanks" when you see them, or maybe send them an . A whole lot of flying was going on during the Picnic. Several times our club's limit of "5 planes at one time" were in the air. Also getting planes into the fray were some of our newest flyers like Derek Earnhart, Dock Johnson and Mike Scott along with their respective instructors. Even with all this flying, at day's end there had only been 3 plane mishaps: Derik Gadson, Brian Beer and Bob Passarella. The good news is that all their planes were repairable. Maybe this means the Club as a whole has made a lot of improvement in its flying skills over the summer... or not. Apparel with the Club's Logo can still be obtained; but, it won't be at the reduced price at which the Club obtained it through Bob Demola. You can stop in the Embroidme store, they know who we are. Embroidme, 1500 Almonesson Rd, Deptford, NJ Bob will be talking to the store owners about setting up a page on their website from which apparel with our club logo can be ordered directly. We'll let you know when that page is setup. Monday 9/20/10: I was bringing my Kaos in for what I knew was going to be a graceful landing when it plowed into the dirt pile. Stupid flying of course, and with that, I don't deserve this piece of good luck - it's repairable. Oh well, if it wasn't for bad depth perception, I wouldn't have any at all. Anyway, I'm very resourceful. You see, I had also brought along my 46-size Phoenix Yak as a backup flyer; it had flown great the previous week. But low and behold, when I put my starter to it, a grinding noise made it apparent the engine needed mechanical work. Yea, I'm very resourceful. With these 2 planes out of action and with the previous week's ignominious loss of my RV-3, I was all out of daily flyers. (Oh well, the best laid planes of mice and...) Tuesday 9/28/10 Bull Meeting: Along with coffee and donuts and an array of heli flying by several members, Bill Froeder brought in a great looking freshly put together Ultimate. It's a Dave Patrick Models ARF with pull-pull setups for the elevator and for the rudder. Bill put an Irvine stroke in it, digitals all around (including 4 in the wings) and custom decals by Kirbys Kustom Graphics. Something else I hadn't seen before: there was an image on the "floor" of the cockpit which depicted the instrument panel, various controls and the pilots arms and lower body; Bill got this image from Virtual Cockpit. Looking through the canopy, it looked pretty good. Friday 10/8/10: At the Field: (My first day flying after 3 weeks of fixing airplanes.) Marty Brodack's plane had what would normally have been a slightly hard landing; but, it flattened the plane's main gear. This, just after Marty had mentioned to me that the only problem with the plane was its weak main gear. Luckily, Marty asked Tony Severino for advice. See TIP #4 below for Tony's answer. Hopefully, Rich Onorato's run of very bad airplane luck is over. In just two weeks Rich lost

3 West Jersey Wind 3 his beautiful Top Flite Cessna 182 due to what appeared to be radio interference, his big T-34 Mentor when a wing broke and, finally, one other plane which a tree got angry with, but fortunately was repairable. (To me, that Cessna was one of the most beautiful planes in the club.) Today seemed to show that the bad luck had run its course. Rich broke-in a new 1.20 four-stroke, then put it in a plane and flew it without incident - in spite of some sudden, nasty wind gusts just as he landed it for the first time with the new engine. Gregg Clement took Bob Aleardi up with a buddy-box for what was probably one of Bob's last few days of instructional flying. Bob's very close to his Solo. (Get out the checkbook.) Tips... well, maybe: 1. There have been some issues with Spectrum DX6i transmitters. A reminder from Mark Schools is to make sure you range check your planes using Spectrum's prescribed method: put the transmitter in its reduced power mode and then walk away the suggested distance to accomplish the range check. Don't range check by just turning the transmitter on in its normal power mode and walking away the suggested distance for the range check. This applies to other 2.4 setups as well. For info, questions and on-going issues about specific make RC radios, RC Universe has an "Radio Manufacturer Direct Support Forum". 2. Came across some interesting sounding ideas on an RC Universe forum that allows for adjustments on some makes of carbs in fully cowled engines without too much being apparent on the outside of the cowl. Get a small allen head screw, chuck it in a drill, and file the body down to a small enough diameter to fit in the carb's needle valve adjusting screw. Once installed, you can then use an allen wrench to turn the screw through a very small hole in the cowl. (I'll give this one a try.) A fancier way is to drill and bottom-tap the needle valve hole for 2-56 or 4-40 thread and securely install an allen head screw. For Super Tigres, solder a piece of brass tube to the piece that extends from the needle valve and then attach an allen screw at the tube's open end. 3. For anyone using later model O.S..46 or.61 two-strokes: (I learned this one the expensive way because I was hit or miss with my after run oiling.) Be absolutely methodical about using copious amounts of after-run oil in these engines. O.S. says as much as 1 teaspoon. (Wow!) Otherwise, rust can form extremely quickly on the rear bearing's outer race. Once the rust gets heavy enough, tiny pieces of it flake off and damage the bearing and score the piston/ sleeve; then, it's either a new engine or a rebuild. However, no rust had formed in an O.S..46 engine I had similarly treated but had installed Boca "stainless steel" bearings. I'm not pushing Boca, just disappointed in O.S. bearing quality. For info, questions and on-going issues about specific make RC engines, RC Universe has an "Engine Manufacturers Direct Support Forum". 4. Tony Severino mentioned "TNT Landing Gear Products" for obtaining landing gear (aluminum and composite), wing tubes and other componets for replacing or improving ones that just don't keep you happy. NOTE: Remember, a big part of having a club is communication. If anyone would like to share a tip, a good website or an airplane experience, please mention it to me and I'll include it in the newsletter either with or without your name - your choice.
