5 PAGE THREE Chairpersons report The 2016/2017 season for St Clair has been another one of great success with the club continuing to perform to high standard across the sporting sphere with our IRB team finishing second and our Pool Champs team finishing fourth at their respective National Championships. Mixed in with some great progress in club capability occurring with the purchase of a new training facility, the sponsorship of a new club vehicle and the appointment of our first member with responsibility for managing our sporting aspects. Access to the beach both in a day to day sense and for the future continues to be a concern for the club, with no firm plans having been made for the long term stability of the beach being some that the club must continue to monitor closely. Issues around the beach access also continue to impact on the use of our beach with a noted downturn in users of the beach occurring during our main patrolling period. This is evident in reduced beach statistics being shown in our patrol reporting. On the sporting side as previously mentioned there were two very successful teams who travelled away to national events with our largest ever haul of national titles of sixteen being achieved including three in 15 minutes at IRB Nationals held at Waipu Cove will be a season where further future proofing for the club can occur with the quality of membership showing potential for more great success in the coming years. 6 ANNUAL REPORT PAGE FOUR Lifeguarding report Beach conditions made for another challenging patrol season for St Clair with access to the beach at high tide meaning our patrol location was often northwards of the piles. Consistent application to patrolling continues to be an issue for the club with a lack of dedicated resource to lifeguarding in the club meaning that although our Patrol Audits all achieved an 100% rate for the season many of our patrols were substandard and fortunate to occur on inclement weather days. Our initial lifeguard training continues to be performed to a high standard with Chris Haig taking responsibility for this area, however like the rest of the Surf Lifesaving movement further training from there is sporadic. A plan for the in-coming committee around ensuring all lifeguards are able to take part in programmes to upskill themselves is suggested. 7 PAGE FIVE Property report I would like to start by congratulating all those involved in the club on another successful season both on the beach and in the clubrooms. Seeing the club dominate sporting events at the South Island level while also being prominent on the national stage brings a smile to every clubbies face and makes us proud to be a part of the top Otago club The club is always very fortunate to have some of the best volunteers in the country that keep the place ticking over. Brent Wolf deserves a special mention for constantly on repairing our board and skis this season. Without him our athletes and member s wouldn t have had gear to use throughout the season. Likewise, Chris Haig, Matt Bradley and Isaac Davies who have put countless hours into maintaining the IRB side of things which has allowed our patrols to run smoothly and race gear be the best in the country. Finally, as it has been for the past few seasons Greg Taylor has been at the forefront of keeping the club ticking over both electrically and in general. There are many others out there who keep the club going so thank you for putting the effort in! As has been noted there is a bit of work that needs to be done around the club in the off season before we hear the sound of the starting gun at the White Island race. Hopefully the club will be in a position to sign a new lease agreement with the DCC so we can begin a new maintenance plan for our main clubrooms. We also are in need of doing some work on the club s latest asset, the paddle centre at the marina by the Otago Yacht club. So be prepared for a working bee or two in the coming months. We are very privileged to continue to have top of the line rescue equipment constantly coming into our club thanks to our great supporters and charitable trusts. Mention must go to James for constantly filling out grant applications and building relationships with key supporters so we can be in such a fortunate position. It was great to see James be acknowledged as volunteer of the year for the constant hard work he puts in to keeping the club in a functional state! As always It s been great to see so many new and old faces floating around the club this season and I hope to see you and your mates again next season. 8 ANNUAL REPORT PAGE SIX Junior surf report The 2016/17 season was another great one winning the Southern Regional Pool Championships, Otago Sand Champs, Southern Regional Sand championships and being the highest placed South Island Club at Oceans17 placing 14th out of 46 clubs. We had 94 junior members. We cannot achieve these successes without a large number of contributions from a lot of different areas. Our coaches made a huge contribution to this with the amount of time they devoted to the club and our young athletes. Ossian Woods led this with great support from Eilis Doyle starting with preseason training in October. A big thanks to Brent Wolf and Michael Coutts for sand training. Around the pool, a huge thanks to Chris Haig and his team, Jodie Mowat, Maddie Crawford, Emma Young and Mark Falcous. Club days are an integral part of our programme and philosophy and thanks go to the club day coaches: Chris Haig, Emma Young, Chris Sinclair, Mark Falcous, Bruce Smith, Bridget Thomson, Greg Mcleod and Paul Tapsell. There were many great performances throughout the season both team and individual. This started with the National Pool Champs with our U14 Womens Relay Team (Erika Fairweather, Olivia Andrew, Charlotte Underwood-Nicol and Madison Wills) winning the 4x25m brick relay with a NZ Record plus another 2 silver medals. Erika Fairweather also gained another 4 national titles (including 3 individual NZ records) and teamed with Jade Fairweather to win the the u14 tube rescue title. Jade also won an individual bronze medal and Olivia Andrew an individual silver. St Clair again won the local interclub competition with the following athletes as age group champion: Under 8 Girls: Ella Colquhoun (St Clair), Under 10 Girls: Safia McLeod (St Clair) Boys: Harrison Stout (St Clair) Under 12 Girls: Jade Fairweather (St Clair) Boys: Sam Stedman (St Clair) Under 14 Girls: Charlotte Underwood-Nicol (St Clair) Boys: Aidan Macrae (St Clair) We took a team of 23 athletes to Oceans17 coming away with 5 medals; 3 gold (u13 Run swim run; Surf Race and Diamond -Erika Fairweather), 1 silver (Erika Fairweather & Olivier Andrew u14 tube rescue) and 1 bronze (u13 mens beach sprint). We had 3 of the eight finalists in u13 mens beach sprint as well as 4 in the u13 womens surf race. Unlucky not to medal in the u14 womens board rescue final. Competitors also made finals in at least 10 other age group event finals. A great effort all round. Erika Fairweather was awarded sportsperson of the year at the Otago/Southland Regional awards of excellence. I would like to thanks the junior committee and the efforts they put in to supporting this season; Mary Andrew, Bridget Stedman, Chris Haig, Gwen McCready, Chris Sinclair, Paul Tapsell and Brent Wolf. 10 ANNUAL REPORT PAGE EIGHT Skills development report Our intention at St Clair is to maximise the opportunities for members to develop as surf lifeguards through the provision of ongoing training. We hope to provide well organised sessions for all those members wishing to participate in either sport or development of skills by ensuring the coaches and instructors have the resources required. We wanted to ensure the club was represented at all regional and national sporting events and to come away with at least top South Island club status. A total of 21 new lifeguards qualified over the season with most of them looking like they will be retained over the coming seasons. These lifeguards were instructed by Ossian Woods, Jody Mowat and Chris Haig with Jody becoming qualified as a new instructor. Seven of these lifeguards have come up through the junior club program. Additional courses and workshops were provided with First Aid, VHF Marine Radio, Surf Coaching, IRB Crewing and IRB Maintenance. There were also four Patrol Captains and three IRB drivers who completed qualifications. Many of the athletes are enrolled in swim squad training at Moana Pool. Others have opted for either the Surf-Squad or Tri-Squad swimming squads run by the Dunedin Swim Coaching Board. The Surf/Tri squad sessions are for one hour, five times a week. Pool sessions for the Juniors (U14s) are carried out all year round on Wednesday nights. The aim of these sessions is swim coaching for our Junior members and also practice sessions for the Pool Champs competitions. This season they were coached by Chris Haig, Jody Mowat, Maddy Crawford, and Emma Young. There is also a lane specifically coached by the DSCB. The Southern Region Pool Champs was held at Moana Pool in July. St Clair had 13 Senior competitors, 20 Junior competitors and 6 Masters competitors. The whole event had a huge masters field of 36. St Clair dominated certain agegroups whilst some age-groups had zero St Clair competitors. St Clair won convincingly in overall points. The National Pool Champs had a massive field of over 600 competitors. There was huge competition with 45 national records being broken. St Clair had a team of seven senior and six junior competitors. We come away with 20 individual medals and 28 medals from team events, 9 national titles, and 4 national records. This gave us an overall national club ranking of 4th, and top South Island club. This was managed and coached by Chris Haig with many thanks to Margaret and Dennis Trembath, Emma Young, and Mary Andrew for helping to look after the team. The Juniors had good numbers this season with 94 members. 50 of these members gained their 200m swimming awards over the season. The parents did a great job running the Saturday afternoon Junior club-days. Surf sport coaching and training for the Juniors was provided by Ossian Woods and Eilis Doyle over the season. The Juniors had a total of sixtytwo individuals who competed in surf competitions over the season. They were again overwhelming winners of the local interclub competitions and at the Southern Region Junior Championships at Warrington/Waikouaiti, St Clair had 41 athletes competing and again came out the top club. There were twenty-three Junior athletes competing at Oceans 17 in Mount Maunganui. The St Clair club came 14th place overall having obtained four individual placings and one team placing and three titles. This season we trialled having two paid coaches to help train and coach the senior athletes. These were Barry Veenvliet and Joel Davies who each contrasted with their differing coaching styles. We were also fortunate this season to have a lot of new skis and boards. St Clair again dominated the local competition in the swimming, board, and ski arenas. The Eastern Regional Championship was held at Mount Maunganui. St Clair had a team of 16 attending with many athletes making finals. Brent Wolf and David Thomson managed the team, with Barry Veenvliet as the team coach. Carina Doyle

11 PAGE NINE dominated the open women s surf race and runswim-run, overall the team came 18th. A team of thirty competed at the Southern Regional Championship at New Brighton Beach in Christchurch. There were some very good individual performances. A number of under-19 men and women competed in the open age group and came away with medals, often gold. St Clair was placed first place in team points. Brent Wolf was the manager; Barry Veenvliet and Joel Davies were the coaches. There was also strong parental support helping manage the respective age groups and a big thank you to those who towed the trailers and drove the van. The National Championship was also held at New Brighton Beach. This was attended by a team of 27 along with 7 Masters competitors. The club was placed 25th in the points table with 6 points. This was achieved with three team placings and one individual placing. All the Masters athletes came away with a medal. We would like to thank all of the coaches, team managers and parents who helped out on the beach, with the food and transport. It was a real team effort! There were many great performances this season culminating with open club members Carina Doyle and Andrew Trembath being selected for the World Games in Poland this July. In lifeguarding our members showed effective use of their many skills maintaining an effective presence on the beach. The future looks promising with great numbers in the junior club, with at least eight eligible to go on to becoming lifeguards before the start of the next patrolling season. Our resources have also been increased as we have acquired a base on the harbour at the marina which we have yet to fully utilise. Next season we will continue to maintain our goals and further develop the club with effective upskilling and training. Chris Haig and Brent Wolf

12 ANNUAL REPORT PAGE TEN IRB report What a season! Everyone involved deserves a pat on the back and as a club we can all be extremely proud of of our achievements. From an IRB perspective, we keep going from strength to strength and most importantly learning from our mistakes. An example of this is highlighted by retaining the top performing South Island team as well as being placed second overall at Nationals. We had a great start to the season at the first competition the 90 mile Beach race. This year two crews participated with the top crew getting fifth crew home and the other team earning fourth club overall. On our return, we begun IRB driver training. With no new drivers being qualified the previous season, there was a big emphasis from the committee on making sure this was a focus. We begun with a group of about eight people, but by the time the exam came around in mid November, the numbers had dwindled down to just three diehards: Michael Trembath, Jackson Aluesi and Cassidi Woodhouse. Congratulations to all three as they successfully passed the requirements and gained their driver s qualification. The next milestone was the sale of our oldest hull and motor. With regular rotation of gear, we have the peace of mind that all our motors and hulls are up to scratch and always firing when required. It also ensures that when St Clair gear is used in a callout situation or rescue, the crew is confident with what they have and can expect it to perform. Come mid January once everyone had recovered from their holidays, we started to get the race team together to begin preparations to retain our Otago and South Island titles that had been won during the previous season. With a couple of current members joining the Queenstown and Auckland chapters, we knew that this would be no easy feat. We also had the addition of Jackson and Griffin Hill, as well as Cassidi and Rhiannon McFarlane join our IRB Bogan family. Otago champs came around in early March and unfortunately we could not produce the results we wanted with St Kilda taking the top spot winning overall. We took a few valuable lessons from this and had a much better and clearer idea of what we needed to do to win the South Island title the following week. A special mention goes to those crews who performed well. The top women s crew was awarded to Maysha Ahrens and Briar Taylor and the top U21 crew to Nelson Mears and Silas Kemp. Otago champs also saw a return to racing of James Rolfe who filled in crewing for Niam Chronican, and Steph Laughton, who crewed for Mikayla Garforth. The South Island championships took place at Warrington on the second weekend of March which signalled the return of many expats including Ossian Woods and Adam Harvey to take turns in crewing for Niam Chronican who gave premiers a crack and managed third crew overall in the division. Heath Ratten was a welcome return to the IRB arena, teaming up with Arthur Ibbotson and putting in the race prep that would help them at nationals. Steph Botting returned after a few years away racing for Papamoa and teamed up with Steph Laughton, showing off their exceptional skills earning them a couple of medals. Michael Trembath joined Matthew Bradley for the tube rescue race with what was possibly the heaviest boat ever to take off from the beach and he thoroughly enjoyed his time being part of the crew. St Clair took out the open teams race with gold, Maysha and Briar underlining their credentials as top South Island womens crew. Other crews managed to get on the podium but were pipped overall by St Kilda. The pain of a this loss led to a line being drawn in the sand and we knew we had to start performing. The final event of the season was the eagerly anticipated national championships. Due to unforeseen circumstances with fog cancelling the crews flight on the Thursday and having to move the flight to Friday, the team was then behind the eight ball from the get go. Luckily the Queenstown and Auckland chapters were able to get up to our accommodation on the Thursday to sort out the gear preparations. Once the full team assembled in Ruakaka late Friday afternoon, we had a meeting and all understood what was required, then we were straight into it on the Saturday with Assembly and Mass. Nelson Mears, Silas Kemp with patient James Coombes were the first to get a medal with bronze in the U21 Mens Assembly

13 PAGE ELEVEN race. This was quickly followed by Niam Chronican, Scott Fraser and Celia Bell getting a silver in the Senior Assembly race. Then the mass happened. Silas, Nelson and patients were the first to taste gold in the U21 Mens. Next up were Arthur and Heath and patients who proved they should be in the Premier division in taking out the Senior Mens Mass and gaining promotion to Premiers for next season. Not to be out done, Maysha, Briar and patients took out the Womens mass with Mikayla, Heather Thompson and patients gaining a bronze medal. Taking out three quarter mass rescues left us in first equal with Sunset Beach overall after the first day. The highlights from the second day include a bronze to Maysha and Briar in the single rescue and a bronze to Heather and Mikayla in the tube rescue. This placed us second overall and ensured we retained the Arancia Cup for the Top South Island Team. Arthur and Heath also did well to win the Opunake Trophy for top senior team. Looking forward to watching these two and their progression into the premiers next season. developed valuable skills to race well. You always put the club first and it is a privilege and a pleasure being able to bounce ideas off of you. Looking ahead we have a number of goals in sight. One at the top of the list being IRB driver training and upskilling to gaining qualifications. We are already planning to start the next lot of IRB driver training in mid September so be on the lookout for more information closer to the time. Also, with the IRB crewman changing next season, there will also be a push to get all those that do not already have this qualification to put the work in and ensure we meet the new health and safety regulations. From a race perspective, we are always looking to improve, starting with regaining the Otago and South Island titles and achieving the top club at nationals. Based on the results this season, all of this is possible as long as the team improves their base fitness in the off season and comes ready and committed to training from January onwards. See you all then! Matthew Bradley I d like to mention those working behind the scenes that keep this IRB team running. Firstly, the engineering guru Jake Woodhouse. He is only ever a phone call away, always available and willing to share advice and spends ample time in the shed whenever he is in town. Big ups to Niam Chronican, Rhys McAlevey, Chris Haigh and James Walters for giving up their time not only in the shed but also helping out with training, equipment and supplies throughout the season. Shout out to Antony Mason for the advice and many chats we have had. It was nice being able to call on your experiences as the previous powercraft officer and also a racer. Another person who deserves a mention is the manager James Coombes for taking care of the behind the scenes work in organising trips, funding applications and guidance in regards to how the committee work. Finally to the coach, the mechanic and the bystander, Isaac Davies. Your coaching input throughout the season was top notch and your hard work on the motors at the drop of a hat is very much appreciated. Without you, no team would have celebrated success or
