Jan. 31: 6:51 AM / 5:23 PM = 10 hrs. 32 mins. 16 secs. of sun GAINED MINUTES OF DAYLIGHT: +8 AM minutes / +28 PM minutes Total: +36 minutes DSBIA BOARD CANDIDATES: The thirteen DSBIA Board of Directors will be voted on at the General Meeting held on Thursday, January 17th at the Double Tree Hotel on PCH in Dana Point, across from the State Park. Candidates are: Bobby Knox, Mario Cuevas, Donna Kalez, Roger More, Ken Neilsen, William (Bill) Grey, Bill Brooks, Margie Black, Michael Ahumada, Jr., Ed Neely, Michael Peck, Steve Stirrett, Thomas Haight and Mary Hartmann. PORTER PELICAN AWARD: Bryn Faulkner is presented the 2012 Porter Pelican Award for contributions to Doheny State Beach and DSBIA at the DSBIA Holiday Dinner. Bryn has contributed to Doheny in many ways over the years, but is probably best recognized as our Tattoo Artist, providing airbrushed tattoos to kids and kids-at-heart at DSBIA events such as the Kid Zone of Battle of the Paddle, Doheny Surf Festival and Halloween Haunt. The Pelican Award is named for Don Porter, first DSBIA president and inspirational leader in the start-up years of the Association. Also in the photo (L to R) are Board Officers Rodger More, Steve Stirrett, Park Liason Jim Serpa, Bill Brooks, and Ed Neely. THANKS AGAIN, SPARKY: For the fifth year in a row, Jay Sparky Longley, Rainbow Sandals founder and producer of the annual Battle of the Paddle (BOP) stand up paddleboard classic, has donated $7,000 to DSBIA. DSBIA supports the BOP by obtaining permits, organizing a Kid Zone and promoting the event. Additional funds come to DSBIA through its management of the beer garden and sales of Hawaiian Shaved Ice.

Stop by the Visitor Center before the Board meeting on January 17 th between 6:30 PM and 6:50 PM for a quick look inside. GOOD ON YOU, DOHENY LONGBOARDERS: One of the numerous give back to the community projects the Doheny Longboard Surfing Association ( organizes each year is its Wounded Warriors Surfing Day. Here s some video from their 2012 event held at Churches Beach, San Onofre State Beach. DECEMBER KING TIDES: King tides are the highest tides of the year. They re caused when the sun, moon and earth are in a straight line and when they are closest to one another. It s all a mathematical game: the sun is closest to the earth in its orbit exerting it s maximum gravitational pull; the new moon phase has the moon between the sun and earth, thus adding the moon s much stronger gravitational pull to that of the sun; so we have King Tides when the positions of the sun and moon exert their maximum pull on the oceans. This December, our King Tides were Dec.12, 13 and 14. There will also be King

3 Tides on January 9, 10 and 11, and February 7, 8 and 9. These tides cause a threat to the land if they occur at the same time a storm or big swell is hitting the coast. Fortunately for us, no such swell was running, but if you remember two years ago, there was a lot of damage to property along the shoreline in California. Not coincidentally, we have our lowest tides of the year on the same days as our highest tides. For the Dana Point tide pools, this caused nearly a 9-foot difference in tide height each day. Photos below were taken on Dec. 14. High Tide 9: feet Low Tide at 4: feet CALENDAR: Not all events are DSBIA sponsored, but all will be fun. THURSDAY, JAN. 17: ANNUAL ORGANIZATION MEETING. Held at the Double Tree Hotel on PCH, across from Doheny State Beach, 7 PM. All DSBIA members welcomed. SATURDAY, FEB. 16: LOVE YOUR BEACH CLEAN UP. Join us for our first Adopt-A-Beach Cleanup of the year as we love Doheny back to good health after the runoff from winter rains. The cleanup is from 9:00 am Noon. All beach cleanups meet at the lifeguard headquarters (adjacent to the mouth of San Juan Creek). Thank you for bringing along working gloves. SATURDAY, MARCH 9: 5 TH ANNUAL GRUNION RUN. 10K & 5K Run/Walk and Kids' 1K Run will take place in Doheny State Beach on Saturday, March 9, 2013 starting at 7:45am. This is a fast and flat scenic run / walk along the coast and through Doheny State Beach. The event is part of the two week Dana Point Festival of Whales. 4 SATURDAY, MARCH 9 : DOHENY MOBILE MARINE MAMMMAL MUSEUM. Our Marine Mammal exhibits will be on display from 11 AM to 3 PM along the Doheny State Beach esplanade between the snack stand and the west jetty. A chance to see and feel authentic marine mammal artifacts (and some cool replicas, too). SUNDAY, MARCH 10: WHALE OF A BEACH CLEAN UP, 9AM - NOON. Celebrate the return of the majestic Gray Whales by cleaning up the beach before the debris washes off into the their ocean. We meet at lifeguard headquarters. HAIL, GAYLE!!! NOT A DSBIA MEMBER YET?
