Ralph has been recognised for his significant service and contribution to the surf lifesaving movement. I encourage every club member to celebrate the sporting achievements of their fellow clubbies. In particular; congratulations to our female boat crew who were named as the U23 Women Australian team. The crew comprises - Elise Buchanan, Catherine Ulrich, Morgana Jones, Laura Healy. On the selection day they were swept by Michael Brooks and their crew is coached and swept by Pat McGuire. Last weekend the Murphy Homes 40 Maroochy Classic 2016 was action packed. The weather was not so kind to us with the Beach events called off on Saturday afternoon because of lightning strikes. Yet the March Past teams still managed to compete. Maroochydore had 3 March Past teams entered and did the club proud on the day. Weather was still overcast early Sunday but eventually the sun broke through and rescheduled Beach events held and the Sunday full program ran to schedule. Every carnivals requires a lot of workers to make them successful so on behalf of Maroochydore SLSC I would like to thank all the Branch representatives and officials for their efforts over the weekend. Without their support the event wouldn t happen. To all Maroochydore club member s that helped from the IRBD and crews, club officials to our very loyal hard working work force thank you very much. I must make mention that a lot of the competitors helped with the clean-up and packing away of the carnival equipment, which made the job so much easier and most probably the quickest time for a long time - thank you. It has been a hot summer with plenty of people on our beaches over the holiday period. Congratulations to every patrolling member who gave their all despite the hot, hot weather conditions. The humid weather is set to continue so please remember to Slip, Slop, Slap, stay in the shade of the patrol arena or beach towers, and drink plenty of water when on patrol. It s getting to the pointy end of the season. Please keep in mind that you are required to fulfil your club membership obligation and do all your patrols for the remainder of the season. The rest of your patrol depends on you turning up and sharing the duties around. The 2016 Australian Titles is approaching quickly and I invite all interested club members to come along to a briefing meeting on what is happening over the week of events and how club members can help and join the club s workforce. 2 Lifesaving News Clive Herrald Club Captain & Director of Lifesaving Mobile: As we enter the pointy end of the season, it is good to reflect on our achievements thus far this season. First and foremost, a big thank you to all those members who gave up part of their Christmas Day to patrol our beach. Your contribution has been recognised and should have been acknowledged by now. If for some reason your contribution was not acknowledged for whatever reason please let me know and I will sort that matter very quickly. Our New Year s Day celebrations were very successful and well received by members and the general public. The fireworks display was terrific, and even though we had reasonably strong winds we still managed to put on a great display to end the celebrations. Maybe the idea of a beach party will become a regular event each New Year s day in the future. It certainly drew the local community and was a great success all round. Since Christmas the conditions on our beach have ranged from picture perfect, no wind, glassy with shoulder high waves to terrible, with some big surf, strong winds, rain, and really strong rips to boot. We did have a lot of very windy days in between which put a bit of a dampener on the surf but all in all we came through January with a good balance. The Australia Day long weekend was no exception with big surf and big tides. The big surf was caused by the cyclone off Fiji and tides by a full moon. There were a number of rescues performed on several weekends with generally people being caught out by very strong sweep into a gutter. On the weekend 23 rd and 24 th rips were very strong indeed and as a result rescues and preventative actions were much higher than normal. You probably read in the local paper that Kings Beach had 78 rescues on the Saturday caused by the swell size and massive tidal movements. On the Sunday late morning my own patrol had a mass rescue of 6 people. One minute they were in the flags and next minute after a set had washed in they were all swept to the south into a hole and rip and all had to be rescued. I was standing on the southern flag as PC which was lucky as it happened so quickly. We were able to send in members with rescue tubes very quickly and in no time had 4 patrol members in the water pulling people back to shore. Young Lachlan McGrath had just landed on the Ia n shore on his racing board and I asked him to go and bring in one of the people, a middle aged lady who needed some oxygen after the event, having swallowed a bit of water in the process. I don t know exactly how many preventatives were issued over both days but it was certainly a constant battle. Thanks must go to the patrols for your vigilance each weekend and prompt action to bring the distressed swimmers back to safety. On the previous Saturday, the winds were blowing a howling south easterly with gusts well in excess of 40 knots. We could not for a time keep the red and yellow flags up, even though most of the flag had been furled, and on one particular gust we had one of the black and white flag poles literally break in half. All patrol members had their legs sandblasted, with conditions being very uncomfortable for all. I was tempted to close the beach several times that morning and had to ask a family to leave the beach after having been told very clearly no further than waist deep, they proceeded to head out oblivious to my instructions. We sent 2 patrol members out with rescue tubes and brought them back in. I again spoke to the father and said no further than waist deep. He was yeah yeah no worries, only to have his kids do exactly the same thing while he was not far behind them. After being rescued a second time with rescue tubes I suggested very nicely, go home! Option was if they leave then fine, if they venture back into the water then close the beach. They obliged and left the beach. I also want to remind all patrol members who are on patrol, that when you put on the red and yellow gear and step onto the beach that you immediately represent your club and Surf Lifesaving generally. Sadly I have had to take disciplinary action for several people driving the ATV recklessly down near the sandbags in the sand dunes, and for driving the IRB well in excess of 6 knots in a designated area. In each case the offending people have been members of Alex Surf Club, but as they were reported when they were within the Maroochydore patrol area, the public pointed the finger at us. Fortunately the Club Captain at Alex took appropriate action and that should not occur again. Just the same, it is a timely reminder that such things reflect on us all. SAVING LIVES SINCE 1916

3 Lifesaving News Cont Clive Herrald Club Captain & Director of Lifesaving Mobile: Most of you would not be aware but the main patrol tower shared by us and the Lifeguard service now has a small fridge to keep food and drinks refrigerated, as well as a microwave oven so members on duty in the tower can heat food and drinks as and when they like. A big thank you must therefore go to Kim Musgrove, who has kindly donated these items for the use of our radio operators as well as the lifeguards during the week. Thanks heaps Kim, really appreciated. Finally to patrols, since Christmas there have been a number of patrol members who as a result of their work commitments have been posted away from the club and are no longer able to continue to fulfil their patrol duties. As a result, I am trying to maintain the existing patrols and structures as is but that task are becoming increasingly more difficult. I may have to join 2 patrols together and shuffle people to cover all awards in the near future. If that is the case I will most certainly contact people involved and discuss rather than allocating them first. I am hopeful that I can avoid doing so, so fingers crossed. Other than that, I want to thank you one and all for your support over the season so far and look forward to seeing you all on the beach. Lastly, please all note that as school holidays have passed that our patrol hours have now reverted to a 5PM close in lieu of 6PM. The Youth development team will have the opportunity to go to California USA in July 2017 to compete in the San Clemente Ocean Festival and West Coast Lifeguard Championship. Announcement- MSLSC Youth Development USA Tour The trip will go for 10 to 14 days and will be largely self-funded. Accommodation for members will be home-stay with junior life guards. 6 Surf Sports Update Rob Elford DOSS & Team Manager Mobile: CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS 2015 / 2016 Club Championships for Cadets to Masters was held on Saturday the 9 th of January at Maroochydore Beach, starting at 1.30pm and finishing at 5.30pm. Competition on the day was fierce, with a program of Swim, Board, Ski, Iron and Beach events contested to decide Club Champions for this season. The cans were set and the race order for the Iron races was swim, board and ski. Points were awarded to the top four places in each event and tallied at the completion of all competition events. Competition in the Open men s age group was the closest result of the day with Jake Dale taking out the title just 1 point ahead of Jy Duffy. Hamarna Williams and Tiarnee Massie in the u/15 girls were outstanding with Tiarnee winning the point score at the final count. The u/14 boys fought it out all day with future club stars pushing each other all day to be no.1 at the final count. Hayden Swift earned enough points to just edge out Jett Lancaster and Adam Palmer to win the Championship title for Everyone who competed did so in the true spirit of the Blackswan. 7 Surf Sports Update - Cont Rob Elford DOSS & Team Manager teammanager@maroochysurfclub.com.au Mobile: It s that time of the year where everyone should be focused on the Aussies and how the carnivals between now and then will affect your performances and selection into teams. The First Aid and Champion Lifesavers have already competed in their Branch Championships which are qualifiers to States. As you will no doubt expect the First Aid team performed to the highest standard and have qualified teams in every age group. For the first time in some years under the guidance of Maddi Korac there were 8 competitors contesting the Champion Lifesaver event with Sarah McGrath, Pheobe Wills- Grace and Maddi Korac having all Qualified for States. The Boat section are performing well with the U/23 girls (Assets) setting the bar for all to follow winning the spot in the Australian Development team well done team. Murphy Homes Carnival was once again subjected to the weather on Saturday with the Beach events carried over to Sunday Morning because of lightening and torrential rain. The results and performances by everyone looks promising at this stage of the year. There were some remarkable performances over the weekend with Matty Palmer and Brianna Massie just two of the stars, please take some time and read the results on our club website. Congratulations to all members who gave up their time selflessly to make the Murphy Homes Carnival the success it was. With teams as far as South Australia attending and their plans to bring an even bigger team next year let s hope the weather gods smile on us. We re at that time of the year when all competitors are looking at individual goals and prospects of team selection. To clarify a couple of points with selection: The best team will be chosen to represent the Club with the goal to win Gold at Aussies. Selection will be based on most current results / with all aspects of the results taken into consideration. The Selection committee selects the teams based on results and all available information and consultation with coaching staff. (Coaching staff are not selectors) The lead up to Aussies is well underway with plans being finalised for the Club uniform and all logistics. We will be required to supply IRB craft and Crews for the length of the Titles, States and Branch so if you are able to help don t wait to be asked we can t keep asking and relying the same people to carry the load. 8 Coaches Corner Nathan Greig - Coaching Coordinator coach@maroochysurfclub.com Mobile: Hello all, It s been a great end to January with the Maroochy Classic providing a good warm up to the Aussies and showing our athletes are on the right track for a successful end of season. Maroochydore won races across all age groups and disciplines in what was a very pleasing performance. Tiarnee Massie managed the Swim, Iron and Board trifecta in a very dominate display. Matthew Palmer led from the front in the Open Men s Taplin coming out of the water 1 st and shocking some of his more senior rivals. This set up the race for the rest of his team and we finished a close 2nd behind Northcliffe. The Open Women s Taplin also finished 2 nd with both teams looking capable of big performances over the upcoming Championship events. Changes to Schedule Monday Nipper Board sessions will now be at Picnic Point 4.15pm. Tuesday Senior Board sessions will now be at Picnic Point 4.15pm. Wednesday Iron at club 4.30pm U14 Open. Whilst we have had a good weekend of racing now is the time to start lifting the intensity. There is 11 weeks until Aussies and 6 weeks until the State youth Titles. Skills and speed need to be worked on. Everyone should be focused on their own performance at training and trying to put together the best possible sessions they can. 10 Nipper News 2016 Branch Surf Rescue Alexandra Headland Surf Lifesaving Club Branch Surf Rescue brought amazing results for our first timer Champion Lifesavers and First-Aiders in the Under 14 s and 15 s age groups. On Friday the 15 th of January at 6pm the nerves were building for the Champion Lifesaver Competitors who were about to enter into their Live Patient and Manikin sections of the competition. The results would remain unknown until the following morning, so all we had to rely on were our own body clocks to determine two minutes exactly. Early the Saturday morning we were back down at Alex in the pouring rain and wind studying our Blue Books before heading upstairs for our 40 question, multiple choice exam. We then grabbed our rescue tubes and fibre glass fins and headed down the beach for the physical section of the competition. After a tube race, a board race, a swim race and a beach sprint, we were all anticipating our results, attempting to calculate points from the knowledge we had. At presentations we pleasantly surprised with both Sarah McGrath of U15 and Phoebe Wills-Grace Kirk Kirk Jarrott doja@maroochysurfclub.com.au Mobile: Mobile: of U14 placing in the top two and therefore successfully qualifying for State Titles at Mermaid Beach on the 19 th -21 st February. Sunday brought the First-Aid competition with Franzi Strasser, Claudia Korac and Emma Brennan each competing for their third day in a row. The three Maroochydore teams sat in isolation for 3.5 hours before each being called up to perform first-aid on three patients in eight minutes while being closely judged and assessed by National Level Officials. The Sprained Ankle, Stroke Victim and Coffee Burns were best aided by the team of Sarah Voller and Heloise Pascoe with Ben Colston and Franzi Strasser coming in Second place, and the team of Emma Brennan and Claudia Korac coming in Third. Again, Coach Lenore Grice, allowed this all Maroochydore Podium, sending the top two teams through to States. 11 Camp Commando Debrief! 13 Maroochydore SLS youth attended Camp Commando in January. This talented bunch won Video of the Camp for their extraordinary Star Wars themed introduction to Maroochydore Surf Club. We hope to put their talents to the test are the upcoming Club Camp. Put these dates in your calendar so you don't miss out - 5:00 pm Friday 24 JUNE to Sunday 26 JUNE. Thanks to the Junior Activities Committee and the Youth Committee (Narelle and Ben) a record number of Maroochydore Youth were provided with the awesome and mind blowing opportunity that was Camp Commando, an initiative run by the dedicated crew at Sunshine Coast Branch. Our first task prior to camp was to come together as a team and create a video concept, and film and produce it to play in the Camp Commando Video Competition. This was so much fun! Most of you will have seen the result of that on the clubbies page (thanks for the cameo Rob!) oh and we won by the way! Yay! It was such a cool thing to do though and see the creative talents within our group come alive. Once we got to camp we were all split into groups where we met so many other clubbies of our age, many of who we hadn t met before, because they don t all compete, but are as interested as we are in Surf Lifesaving. In those groups we had to work together to tackle tasks and challenges. We had so many laughs, stepped outside our comfort zones many times and was exhausted by the end of the 3 days. Above all though, we learnt so much, made a lot of new friends and reckon we all bonded so well throughout the process and got to know our own clubbies better. 12 IRB Report It feels like yesterday we where gearing up for the start of the season and now we are gearing up for the pointie end of the season. Just a couple of items I would like to mention, one thing that seams to be happening is the patrols are forgetting to have the backup IRB at the ready at the start of each patrolling day. If the nippers are on that IRB can be used as the backup for the purposes of inspections but for all other days get the back up duck ready. If you would like to do any of your IRB awards the first step is to register by supplying your name, contact and phone number to either the administration staff or myself. The current IRBD course will be assessed on the 12 th of March so no new courses starting for awhile. Remember to gain your crewies you need to be financial have your bronze and be at least sixteen years of age on the day of your assessment. To gain your drivers you need to be financial, have your crewie award and be at least Maroochy Masters Ian Layton IRB Captain ian.layton@sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au Mobile: seventeen years of age on the day of your assessment. Just advising that we hope to take delivery of an IRB in February and would ask that anyone storing their surfboards or other watercraft on the IRB rack please remove them, the racks are for IRB s not your personal gear, I cannot guarantee safety of any items left in that area. Also if there are any members who already have their IRB awards and would like to get involved in IRB training your help would be appreciated and really needed. You may want to go on and gain your trainers and assessors or you may just like to help out as a driver for crewie courses or be a crewie for driver courses either way as a club we need to expand the training staff within the IRB ranks as the demands are forever increasing. Some challenging surf showed up on Alex beach and the Double Skis and the Craft Camerons were cancelled. A good effort for those who competed. Perhaps we should get in some sprint training for the relays a good effort considering we gave away 210 years in the all age relay (averaging 35 years per leg). 13 Master Profile Kirk Jarrott How long have you been involved in Surf Life Saving? From the get go (my Dad was an A Grade Boatie winning 6 State Titles so I used to go and cheer him on). What is your most memorable achievement in sport? Making the drop on a massive section in the Avon Descent. How many times a week do you train? Enough to keep fit and healthy. What do you love about Maroochydore SLSC? Two things: 1. The energy that you get from the water; 2. Watching a nipper catch a wave with a smile on their dial. What is your favourite meal the night before a Lifesaving competition? Nothing specific, it s what you eat during the season is what matters. What do you do with yourself when you are not involved in Surf Lifesaving? Netball, AFL, Oztag, Touch footy, homework, Surfing, skurfing, paddling, reading, swimming, skateboarding, walking the dog, Supping and working. CELEBRATING 100 YEARS

14 Boaties Talk Michael Brooks Boat Captain Mobile: We have just had the biggest rollercoaster weekend on the beach this year. The surf was not dangerous, challenging or big it was just plain AWESOME. On Saturday the boat arena was near North Steyne, the waves were clean with an 8-10 FT face, there was plenty of time between sets and more than often crews were getting out clean without taking a drop of water, in other cases it was about how much wet sand they took. The juniors and 23 s were cancelled so I put the juniors up into B grade so they could race. The boys started with 45 other B grades, they did their job in the first race and qualified to the next, then the field was cut down to 20. We took off and waited with all the other crews, we sat and sat and then the whole field got sucked into a wall of water. 3 crews rolled it and 2 got back shot to the beach, I came up for air and new the boys were ok as I heard them all yahooing. I think I even saw a high five, we couldn t get our act back together in time and got washed back to the beach, in the shallow water we broke an oar, day over. The Minx made it to the final quite easy. Their final was spectacular, they took off and got out well but hit a few bumps and the field was spread out, as they came back in a monster stood up behind them and it was a text book late take off, and text book late take offs end up with text book smashes, day over The girls showed true grit and are impressive with their speed and skills. After the Assets got cancelled they went for a training row near Collaroy where they rescued a kite surfer. After the completion of Saturday s racing the entire club went the Balgowla RSL for dinner. During our meal we heard a thud and we looked over and an old digger had a turn. Catherine Ulrich went straight into Ambo mode and attended the 96yr old, she checked him over to see if CPR was needed and stabilised him for 20 mins until the ambulance arrived. She gave the ambo s a detailed report of the diggers condition and explained he had a minor stroke in some foreign doctors talk language, it was a great display from MSLSC, well done Catherine. The girls comfortably made it through to the final and didn t get any grief through the rounds. I haven t seen a crowd watching surfboats this big since the Kurrawa days. Even though they were confused tourists wondering why the Australian NAVY is rowing boats and the Manly ferry is powered, it was a good atmosphere. We took off in the final and got out pretty clean, we turned equal first with Nth Cottesloe and Palm Beach, we came towards wave zone and a huge set was brewing and Nth Cott and palmy hit the breaks.. Not the Assets... We took off on a large wave, I held it straight for a the first and second kick but slipped and lost my feet, we went sideways for a bit then I tried for a re-entry and as I pulled on the oar it snapped, it probably broke on the initial kick out the back. We were about 5-10m from the finish line and we all jumped out and pulled it across the line backwards for the GOLD medal. It was a great moment when the president of the rower s league told us we were into the Australian development team to race the NZ development team in Shellharbour in a month. The Development team is the Australian male and female U23 teams which with be kitted up with Australian gear and race alongside the official team (Open men Mona vale and Open women Torquay). The crews made the club proud with their racing, rescues, team work and results. Well done. Meggsy On Sunday the surf was a bit bigger but I thought a bit easier, the carnival raced the A grade quite well until 11:30am, but moved the carnival for all other divisions down towards the corner of Manly. Due to the delays/ timing/ 300m move and crowd we decided that the juniors wouldn t race due to car hire restrictions and flights. We packed up the matty b and it went back to its temporary home at Freshwater. The 23 s girls were the last crew remaining for Maroochydore, with a last second crew change we doubled a warm up with moving the boat and rowed down the other end. 16 Athlete Profile Caitlin Gilliman When did you start in Lifesaving? In U8's green caps When did you join Maroochydore SLSC and what bought you to the Blackswan? I joined 1 year ago because it was a really good club with really good coaches like Rhys, and a lot of girls to paddle with and compete with in teams. Who is your sporting mentor or inspiration? My inspiration would be my mum. I look up to her a lot because she has looked after all 6 of my siblings and has always done everything she possible can for all our different sporting careers. What was your most memorable achievement in sport? There has been a lot but it would have to be winning silver medal with the ski relay girls at the Aussies last year. They are always so much better when you win them in a team. What is your favourite food? I enjoy watermelon a lot. What do you do with yourself when you are not involved in Surf Lifesaving? I currently study secondary education at Sunny Coast Uni and lifeguard. What do you want to do when you grow up? Be a sports teacher. Where do you see yourself in 2016? Hopefully on the U23 Australian kayaking team competing at worlds and winning a gold medal at the Aussies in the ski relay. SAVING LIVES SINCE 1916

17 Centenary Whispers #13 CLUB CAPTAINS MUSTER - SUNDAY 6 MARCH AT 2pm Some of the greatest names in the history of Maroochydore Surf Club also served as Club Captain or Chief Instructor/Chief Training Officer. On Sunday 6 March at 2pm in the Black Swan Room we will celebrate the 'Leaders of Lifesaving' who guided our 'core business' of Lifesaving so effectively over the last 100 years. Patrol Captains past and present, Instructors, First Aid, Radio Officers and IRB skippers are all welcome to attend the Muster. Clive Herrald, Brad Kildey and Narelle Souter will be hosting the afternoon. Here is the Roll-call of Captains and CTO's. Any student of our history can see that in each generation they were outstanding contributors.
