Kiama Lions Club - Ki-Lines Edition 4/ Hi Lions, This month's board meeting was a marathon event with a large number of issues being put forward for the board to consider. The KIDS team tabled their plans for the next step in promoting the audio aids and recordings to a greater Australian audience and to also their aim at breaking into the international market through the lions family. The team is doing a great job so please give them all a big thanks. David Robson gave us an update on the activities of the driver reviver teams and the success they have had over many years and the improvement they are having with the roster now being shared with other clubs. Dave also put forward a recommendation to have our club look at the possibility of joining other local organisations to support the re-birthing of a Kiama Pipe band. Gerry McInerney presented the board with the current financial status of the Cancer fund and it will require some fairly serious attention to ensure we get the fund performing where we need it to be so we can support those in need into the future. At this week's dinner meeting we will have the pleasure of hearing from Chris Beaven from the Kids wish foundation (Thanks to Ray Redgrave). Chris has had a very interesting career and hopefully you will hear what drive and initiative it took to achieve the success Chris has gained for this foundation. Just a reminder that the Kiama Art show is on the 7 th.-16 th. September. I will not see you all on Thursday due to work, so VP Clive will be chairing this meeting. President Tony Bill Gilbert: Bill Gilbert joined Kiama Lions Inc in He has been involved in most Lions projects over the years. With your support, KidzWish can continue helping children who need our help. KidzWish is a self funded organisation depending completely on the generosity of individuals and businesses, and with this support, continue raising children up to more than they can be. KidzWish provides a sanctuary for a variety of Physio and Occupational therapy services along with programs which are aimed at supporting children with special needs. Without these services and programs, thousands of special children would remain unassisted and continue the lengthy wait for Government support and services to become available. We not only want our children to have better lives today but we re working with the government to change laws and policies, giving the children and their families a voice and of course a better future.

BRAG CORNER: BOY HOW THOSE LIONS CAN BRAG WHEN THEY GET WARMED UP!!!! FROM LION IAN CHELLEW: I am enclosing an article for the Brag Corner which you may find worthy for publication in the K-Lines... It is a daily telegraph article on the recent World Skydiving Record set in Chicago, lllionois...usa.. My nephew Stewart Kemp, a shire boy but a past resident of Gerringong was part of the-group involved in this. He is circled on the photograph... He is an experienced skydiver having completed over 7000 jumps or perhaps should I say stunts... He currently resides in Mission Beach and recently was involved in training and stunt work for a soon to be released Hollywood movie set in far North Queensland with one Jackie Chan. He also works down here in Wollongong over the Christmas period with the beach dive mob there.

BRAG CORNER FROM LION JOHN HINES: Last Thursday Dinner Meeting at Lions the Service Stations situation was brought up at our table. I put together these few words with a photo of myself at the Service Station. Kiama left Hi and Dry Remember the time when Kiama had more than one Service Station. There were nine Service Stations: Fleetwing, Addison s, Kiama Auto Port, Ampol, Esso, Caltex, BP Service Station Terralong Street. Glen Fulton Holden, Harts Garage. With Service Station Life; there were never dull moments. We were robbed three times, abused when we ran out of petrol due to strikes. Knocking on the door at 2am when truck drivers were running out of diesel. At Christmas times in Kiama you could not keep up with the demand for ICE. One Christmas Day I went into the Garage for a spanner. That was the worst thing I ever did. I was invaded by untold numbers of people wanting ICE and Petrol, plus boat trailers with seized bearings telling me they had been in Kiama all night waiting for a garage to open. Gas for BBQ s was another demand. I gave in and phoned around for help. My Wife Iris and Daughter Gillian plus the two local men helped out on the driveway until one of our casual staff turned up. While I was in the garage I replaced wheel bearings to boat trailers, not forgetting the many punctures. Needless to say we never went close to the Service Station again on Christmas Day. Lion John Hines

THE DAY I SHOOK HANDS WITH THE POPE In November 1970 I was Coxswain of the new Harbour Masters launch Supply for the Maritime Services Board (MSB) based at their depot on Goat Island a very pleasant retreat to get paid for spending ones time. On the appointed day along with Mr W.H. Brotherson -President of the MSB we proceeded from Circular Quay to the McMahon s Pt. ferry wharf on the North side of the harbour across Lavender Bay from Luna Park. There the Pope & his retinue who had driven down from the Mary MacKillop shrine embarked for the trip around to Glebe Pt. in Blackwattle Bay where he was to bless the fishing fleet- at that time mostly Italian stock. After this ceremony he was to carry on via road transport. Accompanying the Pope was Cardinal Gilroy whose bald head & face were beetroot red from being out & about in the sun with the Pope for days so he left the Pope and his group out on the after viewing deck to wave at the crowds following us around behind the Police escort and came into the wheelhouse with me. He The only photo I got of the day-that s me in the beret in the background. The suit & tie is Mr Brotherson, the guy in the white cap on the wharf; The Pope & I swapped life stories on our trip around, I remember I was very impressed with his wartime service in the Army. On arrival at the Glebe Pt wharf he said Terry when you have secured the boat go and stand up on that path that leads up to the roadway and I will see if I can get you an audience. Two men were waiting to take my mooring lines so I was quickly secured and went up the path to wait, after a few minutes the Pope & the Cardinal came up and as the Pope came up to me the Cardinal said something to him and the Pope stopped and turned towards me. Now I had no idea how to behave or what a religiously trained person would do, so I came smartly to attention and stuck my right hand out and said G Day Sir. The Pope took my hand in both of his for a few moments and said something I couldn t understand and then moved on. When his retinue came up one of them stopped by me a presented me with an open box that contained a bronze medal commemorating the Popes visit, next Cardinal Gilroy turned and gave me a grin as he walked away. On our first visit back to the UK in 1993 I took my medal to show the family, at that time a Brother -in- Law called Len was on his last lap with bowel cancer. He was a very devout catholic and was working the prayer beads all day long, so I gave/lent him the Popes medal hoping he might find some comfort from it. Three months later Len was dead & buried along with my medal. At least I know where it is. Footnote. The NSW Govt ordered 2 vessels of the Supply class from the Dehavilland factory at Bankstown airport, the other the Sirius was destined for Norfolk Island -she sank halfway over as mine nearly did in Sydney harbour. Both boats had good aluminium hulls and excellent 6 cylinder Mercedes marine diesel engines but they were nautical nightmares. The design of the vessels called

for the engines to be squeezed into an engine bay right at the stern to provide a roomy main lounge midships to accommodate this the propeller shafts were arranged in an a horizontal V formation which caused a lot of vibration. The constriction in the engine bay caused all kinds of problems especially to the plumbing for the engine cooling /bilge pumping & the fire fighting mains. Two engine driven pumps, one to each engine for these systems were fitted in the bottom of the engine bay, lever operated clutches had to be operated for the 3 separate chambers on each pump, which necessitated climbing down between the hot engines. The sea water inlet pipes to the freshwater heat exchangers and exhaust coolers were always leaking or breaking. Instead of having large radius bends to get around the engines the stainless steel pipes had been mitre cut like picture frames then crudely welded together, this caused excessive turbulence and cavitation in the salt water at the sharp corners which would eat through the welds in a week. To make things worse there were no audio alarms for the bilges/ engine temperature/ engine oil pressure and poor instrumentation in the wheelhouse to tell you the health of the engines. The Sirius s voyage to Norfolk was undertaken single handed by Lance Wilson an HMS Bounty descendant who lived and was born on Norfolk Island, I later got to know him well when we both worked for the MSB at Port Botany. He told me that his vessel had also quickly flooded from broken seawater inlet pipes. He wasn t able to use the vessel s radios to make a distress call as the rising water had covered the battery bank and shorted all the electrics. Luckily for him when he took to the rubber dinghy and cranked the onboard emergency radio an aircraft en-route to Norfolk Island was right overhead and picked up his signal. Mine started to sink on a trip from Circular Quay with three Govt officials aboard to do an inspection of the Munitions & Explosives storage facility in Bantry Bay. When rounding Middle head in a heavy swell coming from astern I noticed she wasn t riding easy with the swell. I asked one of the passengers to steer for me, looked over the stern - -no cooling water coming out with the port engine exhaust- opened the engine hatch to find the engines nearly under water. Once clear of Middle Head I steered for Balmoral beach, halfway there the port engine stoppedoverheated. We ran up the beach with the starboard engine running full speed. I slid down a rope onto the beach amongst an amazed group of onlookers and asked could you direct me to the nearest telephone please? Lion Terry Hales. CHILDREN'S AUDIO THEATRE This could be our most ambitious project yet undertaken by the club. We are producing fully dramatised adaptions of classic childrens stories on CD in MP3 format or downloadable on our podcast website. Originally developed for use by Visually impaired children, we have found their popularity extends to children of all abilities. Our CDs, of which we have 5 in production, are now being played in every state in the country. Please try our new Podcast website at: kiamacat.podbean.com Please view our catalogue at the Children's Audio Theatre web site at: ABOUT JAMBEROO PUB: (DG visit 13/09/12) Welcome to the hottest seats in town. Everyone is welcome here and even the Jamberoo 'locals' will tell you, it's tough to find as good a seat as this around. Heat up by the fire in winter with a bit of port or step up for a great schooner of beer. Maybe it's a nice glass of red or white you desire, that's here as well. Tea, coffee, latte or cappuccino? Your wish is our command. To keep your attention, there are literally hundreds of photos, sports memorabilia and historical items lining the pub walls. Just a warning, it may take more than one beverage to get through it all. Although football is the greatest love of the Warren family, anyone will say, the Warren family support every sport in the local area, league, union, AFL, hockey, touch footy, cricket, the list goes on and on... Jamberoo Pub has a very special dining room, recently built and appropriately named 'The Johnny Warren Dining Room'. An exhibition lines the walls of the life of Johnny Warren, as well as many other photographs and football memorabilia. Guests always ask "What's the connection of Johnny Warren to Jamberoo Pub?" Johnny Warren lived and loved the tranquility of Jamberoo for nearly the last 10 years of his life, but more importantly, he is the youngest brother to owner of over 25 years, Ross Warren.
