Kiama Lions Club Ki-Lines Edition 18/ Hello fellow Lions. At our last meeting we held our all-important elections (very important for me!). Congratulations to incoming President Peter Scifleet, Incoming (and present) Secretary John Larkins and incoming Treasurer David Wright plus the remainder of Peter s Board which will be further detailed in this edition of KiLines. Also on that night we were entertained by Al McDonald s musings on the early days of Kiama Lions. There were certainly some characters back then. Talking of characters, Hilton Bloomfield comes from interesting stock. Seeing those photos of his father in lycra reminded me of my bike rides on Sunday with Dave Grant. Thanks to both of you for your great contribution. I had the opportunity to see some of our finest doing service work at the Second Hand Saturday. We not only directed traffic (close to 100 cars), we served up some fine food and drinks. Secondary, of course, to all this we made well over $1500 on the day and sold hundreds of raffle tickets. Thanks to all those that volunteered, especially Mal Bedford and Ian Chellew who did all the lead up work. Good to see new member (almost) Winton Brooke-Smith serving up great food and acting as mechanic to broken down stall holders. Don t forget this week s meeting is Bowl s night at Kiama Bowling Club; 6.30 for 7pm food in the new Chinese Restaurant then out to the rinks for exciting bowling. Don t forget your flat shoes (thongs if nothing else). Warren Steel has promised a great night and if you REALLY can t eat chinese please ring Warren on Usual meeting attendance etiquette applies. Pres. Geoff If a Member is NOT attending he/she needs to apologise by ringing the Club s phone number ( ). That is we assume you re attending unless told otherwise. 1. If a member is bringing a guest (e.g. wife/partner/friend etc.), the Club needs to know by ringing the Club s phone number ( ).
BOWLS-DINNER MEETING _ EDITOR'S NOTES: 27 th March 2014 Venue Kiama Bowling Club 6.30 For 7.00pm AGENDA Dinner at 7pm then very informal night of bowls and laughter. DON T FORGET FLAT SHOES BOWLS ARE AVAILABLE AT CLUB 27th March 2014 Happy Hour Friday 21st March. Working with Lions at the Car Boot sale on Saturday, what I hear from those Lions that attended this event that it was a great night: Firstly: from a weather aspect Secondly: The pizzas were a great hit, especially the Seafood one. Venue: Leagues Club 6.30 For 7.00pm KIAMA MARKET ROSTERS - 20th APRIL 2014 AM Dennis Wilson (C) Russell Fredericks David Kirkman Gordon Weaver Ian Chellew Jon Phipps CARAVAN: PM Richard Hoskins (C) John Moore Gordon Bell David Wardle Mike Eadon Ian Kind Thanks to Lion Geoff Heinecke for organising these on a regular basis, there are an invaluable social outing for both Lions Members and Lions Partners to enjoy together as a group; outside of the timeframe that Kiama Lions members provide community service to Kiama District community, taking time away from their families to complete those tasks. Thanks Lion Geoff. Lion Warren is organising our next meeting at the Kiama Bowls Club. NOTES 1. Please organise your own swap and tell the Captain of your team who to expect on the day 2. [C] - Team Captain (a) to organise roles and ensure 1 person from morning team to assist setup 7AM (b) to ensure sufficient lions available during his shift (c) to ensure quality of product to customers 3. Shift Times: AM 8AM to Midday PM Midday to 4 PM (includes cleanup) Lions, it is important to support these events, they are important for the Club from a social aspect, to participate and enjoy away from the regular fortnightly meetings provided Editor. EDITOR: Looking at some of the Lions persons assigned to these markets I would suggest that the Captains check their Lions for this event. I am led to believe that Lion Ian Kind will be departing Kiama on or around the timeframe of the markets and that Lion Mike Eadon is not working the Markets van this season.

We raised three children; Kieran, Aleisha and Justin the latter two still live at home, their mum looks after them too well!! My background is mechanical engineering I have been self employed since 1984 working in various business ventures having started them from scratch. I have always enjoyed the challenge.
In 1998 between business ventures our family traveled around Australia for 18 months, one of the most memorable periods of our life, we schooled our children through Distance Education and they all slotted back into school nicely when we arrived back home. I have a bit of history with community service having in my youth been a member of a Rotaract club and also Jamberoo Apex club until I was forced to retire! I was heavily involved both in the fundraising and the construction of the Jamberoo Skate park in 2006/7 and myself and Kevin Carson were recognized by Kiama Council on Australia Day 2008 with a joint Youth Achievement Award, a very humbling experience. I am looking forward to getting involved with Kiama Lions. Editor: This new member is being sponsored by Lion Ray Redgrave, and was part of the contingency of Lions at the Car Boot Sale last Saturday. 7 NBN What s happening? Kiama Downs, Gainsborough, & Minnamurra 23 May 2014 : NBN replaces the Telstra copper landline phone & ADSL internet services, when these services are switched off soon after this date. Customers with special equipment over a copper cable phone line should also contact the supplier of the special equipment. E.g. EFTPOS, back to base alarms, medical alert system, etc. Source: NBNCo Media release 24 Feb 2014 From 24 May 2014 Telstra to progressively turn off the copper cable network over 10 business days. Limited phone service (emergency calls & calls to Telstra only) on the copper for up to 20 more business days after the initial 10 days Customers who apply to transfer to the NBN by 23 May 2014 will retain their services on the copper cable until their NBN service is fully installed. Source: Illawarra Mercury 17/03/2014 IF YOU DO NOTHING YOU RUN THE RISK OF HAVING YOUR INTERNET AND/OR PHONE SERVICES DISCONNECTED. SOME PEOPLE HAVE DECIDED NOT TO TRANSFER TO THE NBN, BUT TO USE THE MOBILE PHONE NETWORK FOR PHONE AND INTERNET SERVICE. Transfer / Connection process: 1. Contact Retail Service Provider (RSP) of your choice & request connection to the NBN NOW 2. Appointment 1: NBN installs internal equipment 3. Appointment 2: RSP installs equipment or RSP posts equipment for self-install by the customer Major areas you have choice: Retail Service Providers (RSPs) You choose the RSP for your needs Connection options in your building Pros Cons Wi-Fi No cabling required fast install, inbuilt, cheapest lower speeds, less secure Powerline (EoP) No cabling required fast install, extra costs lower speeds Ethernet Cat5/6 cabling required Fastest speeds, most secure longer install, higher cost Other options and considerations Existing services: Phone, Internet, etc. onto the NBN Services / offers / speed you want on the NBN Considerations (important) Retain land-line phone number? CHECK IF YOUR CURRENT INTERNET SERVICE PROVIDER CAN RETAIN YOUR CURRENT LAND-LINE PHONE NUMBER AND ADDRESS
Change to national phone number? Retain or change address? Kiama, Kiama Heights, & Jamberoo : Check the NBNCo website to see when the Telstra copper cable services will START TO BE SWITCHED OFF. Go to Click on the When do I get it tag on the home page & enter your address. Disconnection dates are from: Kiama Heights: 30/12/2014 Kiama & Jamberoo: 9/02/2015 Similar situation as per Kiama Downs, Gainsborough, & Minnamurra nearer these dates, except that the optical fibre will only be connected to your building after you contact your preferred RSP and request transfer of your current services on Telstra s copper cable to the NBN. There will be delays in installing the NBN fibre to the building, & internal equipment, due to the complex geology of the area and damaged conduits, or no conduit, from the street to the building. Contact the RSP of your choice & request transfer of home phone and Internet to the NBN SOON, DON T WAIT FOR ALL AREAS In the event of a mains power outage, the NBN internal equipment includes a battery back-up unit, which provides up to 5 hours of power to the NBN equipment. If you have a plain old telephone directly connected to the NBN internal equipment UNI-V port it will continue to operate as long as the battery back-up unit is working. If you require other communications equipment to be operational during a mains power outage (e.g. gateway / modem / router, cordless phones, desk-top computer, back to base alarm, medical alert system, etc., you should consider an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS), which includes a back-up battery and power points for selected equipment to continue operating for a period of time during the mains power outage. MEDICAL ALERT DEVICES If you, or a family member, have a medical condition/s that require a medical alert system, and you are a Telstra customer, you can apply to be listed as a Priority Assistance customer, and may be eligible for a Priority Assistance Interim Phone Service that includes a UPS to keep your medical alert equipment operating. This is a separate temporary service operating over the mobile phone network at present, which can be connected into you existing home phone wired network. Wi-Fi in the building If you use the Wi-Fi system of your RSP s gateway / modem / router to access the Internet from computers, tablets, smart-tvs, etc., you may not get Wi-Fi coverage throughout the building. Wi-Fi range extenders can be installed to increase the Wi-Fi coverage. For more information, contact David Robson
