Kiama Lions Club Ki-lines Edition 19/ th April 2012 Bowls Night Good Day Folks Warilla We had a better result at the market this month, especial thanks to Dave Kirkman and Graham Bradley who tried their hand at a Fairy Floss machine that was given to us for the day. Our Race Day turned out to be a real fun day for all who participated, well done to Clive Payne who worked his socks off. We won t have made the total raised last year, nevertheless it was a good day and we have learned some valuable lessons for next year. Our special thanks to the Sponsors, raffle prize donors and raffle ticket sellers. Even the weather was kind. We are in the process of replacing the Freezer in our Cold Store as the old one is showing signs of rust. We are considering replacing the Fridge in the caravan as well, but that is not such a priority. Relay for Life is our next project. All those who are running/walking are sponsored for their registration by the club----what we now need is for each of these folks to get themselves sponsored for their participation. We will get some forms out soon so they everyone can get this system underway. For all of you who are not walking you could help by being a sponsor for someone who is. The organisers would like some help with the set up and tear down. Raffle tickets will be sold outside Woolies on 27th.. Also these are the last two weeks for collecting 5 cent pieces At our meeting on 24 th May I will be handing out voting slips for each of you. I would like you to nominate the Lion, who, in your opinion has done the most to warrant the title LION OF THE YEAR. The award will be made at the Changeover Dinner on 21 st June Bring a Mate Night is on May 10 th. I can provide a written invitation for anyone who wishes one. This week s meeting is going to be a Bowls evenin g with a difference. It will be at the WARILLA BOWLS Club which is off the Shellharbour Road, (Warilla/Barrack Point). This is a great opportunity to play on what is regarded as one of the best bowling greens in Australia. It is Indoors so we wont get frostbite like last year. The Club has just held the World Championships there Start time 6.30 for 7.00 FLAT SHOES REQUIRED Try car pooling with mates See you there Jerry

EDITOR S DINNER MEETING 26 th April 2012 Venue: Warilla Bowls & Recreation Club 6.30 for 7.00pm ANZAC Day I saw a kid marchin with medals on his chest. He marched alongside Diggers marching six abreast. He knew that it was ANZAC Day - he walked along with pride. He did his best to keep in step with the Diggers by his side. NOTES: BRAG CORNER Harvey Diener was present with the Grand Award of the Crossed Pencils at the Sydney Easter Show Our Dapper Ian Chellew took the award for best dressed male at the Race Day Fashions on the Field Please remember to forward through to johnkarenbar@bigpond.com for inclusion in the Ki-Lines. And when the march was over the kid was rather tired. A Digger said Whose medals, son? to which the kid replied: They belong to daddy, but he did not come back. He died up in New Guinea on a lonely jungle track. The kid looked rather sad then and a tear came to his eye. The Digger said Don t cry my son and I will tell you why. Your daddy marched with us today - all the blooming way. We Diggers know that he was there - it s like that on ANZAC Day. The kid looked rather puzzled and didn t understand, But the Digger went on talking and started to wave his hand. For this great land we live in, there s a price we have to pay For we all love fun and merriment in this country where we live. The price was that some soldier his precious life must give. MAY 10 MEETING BRING A MATE For you to go to school my lad and worship God at will, Someone had to pay the price so the Diggers paid the bill. Your daddy died for us my son - for all things good and true. I wonder if you understand the things I ve said to you. The kid looked up at the Digger - just for a little while And with a changed expression, said, with a lovely smile: I know my dad marched here today - this is ANZAC Day. I know he did. I know he did, all the bloomin way. D. Hunter (A veteran of Shaggy Ridge with the 2/12 Battalion in WW2) Last 2 weeks for collection of 5c pieces. Bring to the 10 th May meeting

RELAY FOR LIFE 2012: Well, only 2 weeks to go and our 2 teams look strong. You can find the web page for our Kiama Lions Roar and Kiama Lions Roar 2 at If you would still like to register please contact me via chatton@bigpond.net.au, or phone or asap. We now need to get to work on getting ourselves sponsored. I have attached a sponsor sheet to this newsletter for you to get donations. I have a receipt book for donations of $2 and over. Alternatively, all members can encourage friends, family and work colleagues to donate on line by selecting the Team to sponsor, either Kiama Lions Roar 1 or 2, or the walker of their choice. We are selling raffle tickets at Centro Kiama again this Friday April 27. So far, I have Veronica Dzelde on from If anyone can spare some time please contact me. Last Friday we had a great day raising almost $400 from shoppers. Thanks to Gordon Bell, David McLeod, Robbie Grant, John Unwin, Jerry G-H and my teenage off siders. During the relay we have permission to run a cake stall. This will be individual serves of goodies near the canteen. These will be for consumption with coffee etc. I will be looking for bakers again to help with preparing and "clingwrapping" slices, cup cakes, cookies etc for sale. I expect we will start selling at about 11am on Saturday 5th and go through until about 4pm. This is of course weather permitting. If anyone is able to help with this, by baking or serving, please send details through so I can keep an eye on what we can expect. I would think we could also sell preserves, pickles and jams if anyone has an over supply of anything in the garden. The actual participation in the walking in the relay also needs to be arranged. The committee is very keen to stress that it is not necessary to have someone walking at all times. As such, I would ask team mebers to let me know when they would like to walk. It would still be great to cover as many hours as possible, but I would think we could leave 10pm - 6am empty!! Thanks everybody for your support, Barb Hatton. EDITORS NOTE: Donor Tally Sheet will go up on the website to be printed out. A printed copy will be photostated to go with the hand delivery of Ki-Lines.

Proposal to form a new Pipe Band in Kiama. The proposal is in 2 parts: 1. Establish a new pipe and drum marching band, the target being to march in the Kiama ANZAC Day parade in Establish a student program, starting with the primary schools in the Kiama LGA, then the high schools that students from the Kiama LGA attend Notes A meeting of Kiama Lions and Rotarians discussed the need to establish a marching band for the town. The preference is for a pipe band, for the following reasons. Kiama now has in Kiama a fine drumming tutor, Mark Lambert, Australian Champion Basic section player, born and raised in the town, prior to joining the Army. o Mark is now Drum Sergeant and tutor with the St Mary s Band Club Pipes and Drums and also drumming tutor to the Presbyterian Ladies College pipe band, the only ladies pipe band in NSW. Mark has created of complete training program for the drum section of the PLC Pipe Band. o Mark and Andrew Iverson, Pipe Major of St Mary s Pipe Band, are keen to help set up a band in Kiama. o Both Mark and Andrew have knowledge of a number of pipers and drummers living in the district who could form a nucleus of established players for such a band. o Mark Lambert has accreditation with the NSW Education Dept., as a tutor, giving him access to any school which needs his services. He could establish a drum corps at Kiama High School. o Mark will check out a number of interested experienced pipers and drummers o Mark will also check the equipment possibly available from a number of Australian military pipe and drum bands that have been dis-banded. The Deputy Principal at Kiama High School was a former pipe major of the old Kiama Pipe Band and as he is on the point of retirement, may be persuaded to take on the role again. With some encouragement some students at both Kiama HS and St Joseph s HS could be trained as pipers and drummers. The primary schools in the Kiama LGA should also be looked as they have strong music programs. An Australian Pipe Band Association (APBA) accredited Dress and Drill adjudicator with many years experience in pipe bands, and a piper with overseas pipe band competition experience at the highest level, reside in Kiama, and are interested in this proposal. Insurance is available through the $168 PA per band, plus a small fee per participant. The recent demise of another pipe band has brought some sets of kilts on the market. The tartan, the Red Ulster, being very much aligned historically to our immediate area. The cost would be as 2 nd hand items. Other equipment and dress items may be available for loan or sale. The St Mary s Pipe Band have a spare set of drums (bass, tenors and snares) they may be willing to loan to a fledgling band for a few years, until they can afford their own. Establishing a schools program would provide a nursery for future participants, and include other instruments that are now used by many gaelic performance bands

A schools program could also include developing a drum-line that could be a feature of local sporting and other events Practice spaces are available at the RSL Room in the old Kiama Council Chambers and at the RSL Sub-Branch hall in Jamberoo A joint project of the Kiama Lions and Rotary Clubs would be best for this enterprise. Brig. (Ret) Phillip Mac Namara with Kiama Lions members & speaking to Kiama Lions Dinner 12/04/12 A Brown Slouch Hat There is a symbol, we love and adore it, You see it daily wherever you go. Long years have passed since our fathers once wore it, What is the symbol that we should all know? It's a brown slouch hat with the side turned up, and it means the world to me. It s the symbol of our Nation the land of liberty. And as soldiers they wear it, how proudly they bear it, for all the world to see. Just a brown slouch hat with the side turned up, heading straight for victory. Don't you thrill as young Bill passes by? Don't you beam at the gleam in his eye? Head erect, shoulders square, tunic spic and span, Ev'ry inch a soldier and ev'ry inch a man. As they swing down the street, aren't they grand? Three abreast to the beat of the band, But what do we remember when the boys have passed along? Marching by so brave and strong. Just a brown... J Albert & Son, Sydney, 1942
