Pool Rescue Championship Report Sue Baxter-Winch & John Winch, Coaches BRANCH CHAMPIONSHIPS KAWANA AQUATIC CENTRE, 12 July Maroochydore produced some really strong performances at the Sunshine Coast Branch Championships with a large proportion of the team either new to the discipline or progressing up to U14 s & U15 s and needing to learn a new set of skills. We came away with 20 wins, 15 second placings and 10 thirds, together with a large number of minor placing of 4th-6th. Club member, Australian Team member and former World Record Holder Pamela Hendry spent time giving back to the club teaching Sunny Williams and Hamish Irvine the finer skills in the Medley Relay Changeover. SLSQ POOL RESCUE CHAMPIONSHIPS CABOOLTURE REGIONAL AQUATIC LEISURE CENTRE MORAYFIELD 26/27 July 39 Maroochydore athletes converged on the Caboolture Regional Aquatic Centre to contest the SLSQ 2014 Pool Rescue Championships. Day 1 the U10 s to U15 s competed in a variety of events, some for the first time. Our U11 (including U10 Hamish Irvine) Boys relay team had a clean sweep taking home 3 Golds on the day. We finished the day in the lead on 214 points, with Sunshine Beach 168 and Currumbin 149. A massive effort from the Junior members of the Club. SLSA POOL RESCUE CHAMPIONSHIPS SYDNEY OLYMPIC PARK AQUATIC CENTRE HOMEBUSH 8-10 August 22 Athletes = 1 World Record, 11 Australian Records, 15 Gold Medals, 11 Silver & 7 Bronze. What an amazing effort. The team lead by Captains Pamela Hendry (Open) & David Elliott (U19) consisted of U12 Emma Brennan, Phoebe Wills-Grace, Adele Boughton, Alex Pettigrew, Ethan Irvine, Jett Lancaster, Adam Palmer U13 Ella Chalmers, Hamarna Williams, Sarah McGrath, Summer Short. U14 - Dominic Elliott, Jackson Woollett, Matt Palmer, Reece Southall. U17 Chelsea Gillett, Cassie Lee, Darcey Starr-Thomas, Laura Pettigrew Rounding off the team with our only Open Male Danny Short. The Maroochydore Clubbies each competed exceptionally well and for many of our young guns, punching over their years, proved that the club has some great talent to continue the Pool Rescue tradition for years to come. Our U13 girls powered in the relays bringing home 3 Australian records to accompany their gold medals. The highlight was Pamela Hendry regaining her World Record in the 100 Carry in front of her family, friends and clubmates. After three massive days our little band of 22 athletes managed to come out 3rd in the final point score. Currumbin 287, Terrigal 280, Maroochydore 220. Day 2 with only 7 athletes putting up a valiant effort, they managed to stave off Sunshine Beach but the sheer weight of numbers in the Currumbin & Northcliffe Seniors & Masters saw us in 3rd place at the end of the weekend. The Maroochydore medal tally over the two days saw us take home 15 Gold - 10 Silver - 23 Bronze The final point score was Currumbin, 357, Northcliffe 298 & Maroochydore

During our time as Maroochydore Pool Rescue Coaches we have worked with some amazing athletes and support staff. We both sincerely hope that Maroochydore will continue to achieve success in the Pool Lifesaving realm and wish the Pool Lifesaving discipline to grow over the years to come at Maroochydore. 4 Boat Section s Report Steve Ellwood, Boat Captain season saw some changes to the makeup of the crews with the extra addition of an under 19 boys the only category we did not cover was the under 23 men s. Crew Sweep Stroke Second Stroke Second Bow Bow Force Open Men`s Force Reserve Force U19 Boys Michael Megsy Brooks Michael Megsy Brooks Michael Megsy Brooks Troy Slade Chris Howell Mat Keilor Chris Schulz David Hoffmann Johnny Naughton William Sparrow Corey Stone Daniel Ashton Patrick McNally Christian Thavenot Lachlan Hoffmann Spartans Reserve Pat Maguire Phillip Aslett Samuel Pickett Mick Greasley Bruce Kershaw Assets U23 Girls Minx Open Women Old Boys 200+ Pat Maguire Catherine Ulrich Lucy Dewar Elise Buchanan Alexander French Laurie Murphy Olivia Brusasco Laura Healy Melissa Sorrenti Kate Kyriacou Steve Wieland Paul Thomas Steve Ellwood Drew Moles Bernie Duncan UNDER 23 GIRLS ASSETS We saw 3 new girls in surf boats for the first time, with Lucy being the only one from last year`s crew. Then in December unfortunately Brittany Ruffin injured her back putting her out for the season. Fortunately, Pat found a worthy replacement in Alex French which was the first time she had been in a surf club let alone a surf boat. They were selected in the Queensland State team to compete at the ASRL interstate competition at Shellharbour NSW, which they won. They then went on to win the Branch & State Championships. At the Aussies they finished no worse than 1st or 2nd in the heats, Quarter & Semifinals. In the final they drew a tough alley & just finished out of the medal places. Congratulation girls on a stellar year, Aussies at Maroochydore will not come soon enough. Under 19 Boys FORCE After many years without one, it was great to see a junior crew back in the club. All the boys were first timers in the boat, but under the guidance of Megsy & Bob Boat Stone the boys were making headway as the season progressed. The only set back was when young Christian had a workplace incident injuring one of his fingers, which put him out for a number of weeks. During his absence Riley Kovac stepped in. Once again with no rowing background he just wanted to give it a go. Thanks & we will see Riley there next season I am sure. The boy s best performance for the year was at the State Championships at Alexander Headlands where they were firstly part of the all conquering boat relay team beating the Alexander Headlands team. Then after rowing in the rounds & just qualifying through to the semis, the boys rowed the house down to win & do the same in the final picking up two gold medals for the day, not bad for first year surfboat rowers. At the Aussies the boys rowed for three days qualifying to the semi final, where they were knocked out missing the final. They also rowed in the final of the Boat Rely. This was a great experience for them rowing against boys 2 years older & 2 taller from all over the country. Watch these guys in 2016 they will not disappoint us. 38

RESERVE FORCE This season saw a couple of changes from previous years with Dave Hoffmann back after overcoming an illness & Corey Stone after retiring from the A grade & looking for a more leisurely pace. These guys proved to be the premium Reserve grade crew of Queensland this season, Navy series winners State representatives ASRL Championship Shellharbour State Championship winners Boat Relay Reserve Grade. At the Aussies these guys were part of the Boat Relay final & were looking pretty good in the rounds, but in the quarter final the guys were checked on the way out catching the sweep oar awkwardly & breaking it, that`s Surfboats. OPEN WOMEN`S MINX Another crew which went through changes with Laura moving up from last year`s U23 girls & Olivia coming in as a first time Surf Rower & Clubby. Unfortunately, Kate was injured at the last Navy Series at Tugun and was out for a month. The year was a real learning curve for the girls, working out their positions in the boat & perfecting their timing. A big thanks goes to Katrina Tune for helping out during this period when Olivia was training for her Bronze & when Kate was injured. The girls did show some great performances throughout the year, so watch out for next seasons results. RESERVE SPARTANS It was great to see Mick Greasley back after a mid-career break and rowing for the first time in a few years. Next season we hope to see Mick standing up the back of the boat steering a crew. This crew started the season well with impressive performances, but unfortunately they lost Sean Chapman to the mines FIFO job. Pat recruited Bruce from the ranks, an ex swimmer who was willing to give it a go & try his hand at surf boat rowing. For the rest of the season the crew was trialling rowing positions, training techniques and timing. Their best performance was at the Aussies where they made it through the rounds to the Saturday in the top 30+ crews. If these guys can get a clear run next season, I am sure they will improve out of sight. OPEN MEN`S FORCE After last year s exceptional season & work commitments, the guys decided to have an extended break this season. Starting back at the BEKO Cup Noosa, then Branch, State & Aussies. We were not expecting too much from the guys, but just to relax, enjoy the rowing & the camaraderie with the section. We hope this & the next year s titles at our home beach motivate them to once again be the true FORCE we know they can be. OLD BOY`S 200+ After a promising start to the season we had a setback loosing Bernie for most of the season due to ahead knock injury whilst rowing at Maroochydore 5:30 in the morning, in what I recon was the best surf I have seen at the club for years. We have it all on film, so watch out for it at the Annual Dinner. We did manage to have a row at the State Championships winning the first round of three, but in the final there was not much juice left & we came in 5th. Watch this space for next season with the titles at home. I am expecting a lot of the old boys to be dusting off their caps & pulling up the old Speedo s between the cheeks again. SWEEPS Megsy, Pat & Laurie thanks, without you guys the club would not have the calibre of crews we see today. Training up to 3 crews during the week & weekends is a big commitment. Megsy, one of the top sweeps in the country at the moment, at Aussies swept 4 crews over 4 days & went out & around the cans approximately 35+ times. Also thanks to Steve Wieland, Nick Hume, Bernie Duncan & Bob Stone for helping out with the sweeping when needed. MAROOCHYDORE 2016 With the Aussies at our home beach & the 100 year anniversary for the Club, 2016 will be an opportunity not to be missed. I am expecting all categories in the boats to be covered, if not 2 crews including the Masters. We will have a new surf boat for the new season, so keep an eye out for that. 39

Board Captain s Report Jake Dale I ve got a theory that a good coach will make his players see what they can be rather than what they are. Our coaches unique vision allows us to grow as cygnets into swans and achieve purpose through perseverance. As the 99th chapter of this book wraps up, I ll take a moment to mention pieces of paddling prowess from throughout the season. A small group of Open/Youth members trained through the winter and contested the World Championships in La Grande Motte, Montpellier, France. This was an experience that allowed our competitors to meet fellow like-minded individuals from every corner of the globe and soak up a new continents culture. Laura Pettigrew managed to outclass the competition in the youth women s board race and brought home a gold medal for her troubles. A solid block of calculated training cycles moved us into the business end of the season feeling fresh and ready to fire. Having the opportunity to contest a real surf carnival on our own beach and showing the rest of Queensland what we have to offer was a great way to compete in a State Titles. The ever impressive U/15 females lead by Gracie Kaihau, clean swept the final and went 1, 2 & 3. This powerhouse of an age group also managed to go first and second in the Board Relay and Rescue Board events. Jake Dale was unlucky not to take out a junior men s State Title on his home beach finishing a credible second place in a run up the beach. North Kirra was yet again the focal point of the carnival calendar, a week long stint for the Aussies saw strong performances across all age groups. Gracie Kaihau kicked things off with a win in the U/15 Girl s Board race and then teamed up to win the female board relay with, Shae Travers and Ally Clarke. Laura Pettigrew put together a solid race and managed a 3rd place in the U/17 females in a very close run up the beach. Keep an eye on this talented young lady in her upcoming crossing of Molokai to Oahu. Beau Farrell was unable to put the pieces of the puzzle in the Open Men s final but remains one to watch on familiar grains of sand next year s Aussies. Special thanks to Justin Fay, water safety personnel and officials for all the hours you put in to enable us to do what we love. Yours in board paddling. Iron Captain s Report Ashley Massie This season, the Maroochydore Ironman and Ironwomen sent a warning out to the clubs of Australia that Maroochydore will be a force of the future. Throughout the carnivals, Maroochydore competitors continually placed in the finals with the best. In our open ranks, we were led by the experienced Dylan Newbiggin and Nikki Chapman, who both demonstrated to the team how it s done when racing against the elite. Not to be beaten, our U17 s led by Cassie Lee, Laura Pettigrew, Lachlan Masters, Tainui Kaihau and Lachlan McGrath all showed they are a serious force with outstanding racing at the Aussies. In the U15 s, Matthew Palmer, Grace Kaihau and Tiarnee Massie all proved their champions of the future when they were all pipped at the post for a win in the Iron at the Aussie Youth Titles. It was demonstrated this season that all of our athletes have stepped it up and have a bright future if they continue to follow their dreams. If their absolutely clear of their goals and they go on the relentless pursuit of achieving these goals, success will come. Success can be yours if you want it enough; it s just the timing of this success that may vary. Gold medals aren t really made of gold. They re made of sweat, determination, and a hard-to-find alloy called guts. Dan Gable. Good luck and I will see you all next Season. 40

Ski Captain s Report Peter Elford The 2014/2015 season is over and what a year it s been! The Ski section under the guidance of Rhys Drury this year has had one of the most successful seasons in many years. There were a lot of great victories and even more great memories made. I couldn t possibly hope to mention every special moment in this report but hopefully I can cover a few. The women s as usual, showed the boys how it s done with Alyce Burnett, Caitlyn Gilliman and Briana Massie taking silver at Aussies in the Open Women s Ski Relay. A huge accomplishment considering 2 in the team are still under 19 s. The under 19 men s of Jy Duffy, Josh Rew and of course the never to be seen at Ski training all year Jake Dale winning gold in their age group. It s not every day that you get a win like that, guys be proud. Maybe next season we will see Jake Dale at Ski training more, but I m not holding my breath. With-out a doubt one of the best results of the carnival was the Open Women s Double Ski gold to Alyce and Brianna. For two born and raised Maroochydore Clubbies it is one of the best wins of the season. Other double crews of Jordan Wood and Jy Duffy winning bronze in the Open Men s and again Jy Duffy and Josh Rew winning silver in the 19 s. Both Jy and Josh need to stay in their own age group I think, every time they race up they steal the medals then run back for their own age group! While our teams are shinning at the moment our individuals are certainly still leading the way. Alyce had another strong performance this year claiming bronze in the Open Women s. Jy Duffy winning bronze in the under 19 s and I think Jy said he ll just leave the opens for next year when he s old enough? It has been an awesome season and congratulations to everyone on your hard work and achievements. I would like to thank Rhys Drury for an amazing season. The whole team is grateful to have you here. The atmosphere within Ski training is the best I have seen it since I have been here and its only looking up from here! And of course thank you to our coaching coordinator Bugsy for yet another great season of training. I heard a rumor that he is making a comeback for next season Also, congratulations to everyone who has made the Australian Kayaking Team this season. An outstanding achievement for a few just starting their journey in this sport and a few at the pointy end chasing Rio next year. Good luck to all, I m sure you will do the club proud. Thank you to everyone for an amazing year. I can t wait for next season on our home beach for 100 year celebration. Let s get ready! 41

Swim Captain s Report Jae Marr The 2015 North Kirra Australian titles was the end of a long season for all of our competitors and throughout the week we saw some highs and lows from the swimmers. The 2014/15 season started early in July with a team contesting the State and National Pool Rescue Championships. The Maroochydore team came away from both of these championships with a creditable third place in the overall team points score. Strong individual performances from Pamela Henry and Chelsea Gillett saw both girls selected in the 2014 Australian Life Saving Team which contested the Rescue 2014 Championships in France. A big thank you must go to our outgoing Pool Rescue coach Sue Baxter-Winch and her able assistant John Winch who have been the driving force behind the success of our club over the past decade. GO THE BLACK SWAN!!! A big THANK YOU to Nathan for his direction throughout this season well done this is a result that you can build upon. Also to pool Coach Sue Baxter-Winch for the hours, your commitment and enthusiasm that you put into our pool rescue squad is appreciated. Thank you to all swimmers, parents and supporters for their ongoing support and effort throughout the season. And finally a big thanks to Justin; our team manager and his assistant on beach Rob who just keeps on giving. The first open carnival of the season was our own Murphy Builders Carnival. It was well supported by our competitors with strong performances over the weekend. The following carnivals were a little disjointed with a scattering of carnivals over the next three months making it difficult to send a full competitive team. Throughout the season the likes of Jonty Dodson, Lachlan Masters, Cassie Lee, Reece Southall, and Dylan Newbiggen, raced well in all team swim events continually showing their toughness in Surf teams, Taplin relay and Board rescue swims. Far and away the two best swims of the season were saved for the AUSSIES. The first was from one of our younger members, Mathew Palmer in the Under 15 Surf Race. The Maroochydore 15-year-old was battling behind the leaders hoping to maybe gain a medal when he grabbed his chance as a wave built up on the North Kirra bank. While Matt Sperring (Warilla Barrack Point), Nicholas Hards (North Cronulla) and Thomas Doyle (Manly) had led the race from the start, they could not stop Palmer joining them in front as the wave broke. The four rode it as far as they could but it was Palmer who was first to his feet and won the dash up the beach, celebrating as he crossed the line. I just had to get up and go, he said. I m stoked, I love it. While the other belonged to Nicole Chapman, in the Open Female Taplin Relay, in the words of our coach She had the swim of her life, entering the third or fourth only to exit the swim leg with a winning margin. Congratulations Nicole and Matthew. 42

Masters Liaison Officer s Report Ian Jobson Okay, so do we measure this Masters season based on Gold winning performances at Aussie Titles? If we do, it wasn t one of our better performances. If measured by our participation in all carnivals throughout the season we were very successful, especially this year s State Titles on our home beach, even Ralph won a gold medal. We participated in all workforce activities and we held numerous elected club office positions, so we had a good year. We introduced regular monthly Masters Meetings that were well attended and our Masters female competitors increased their numbers were up from last year. A huge thank you to Larrisa Hallam in coordinating and keeping our Masters in the loop, Alan Vidler for taking on the Team Managers job, and Kat Egan for being Kat Egan. Congratulations go to this year s National Gold Medal winners: Kat Egan, our only individual medallist in the Board Race, the 130 Men s Swim Team (Wade Lee, Jae Marr, Ashley Massie) and the 130yr Men s Ski Relay (Dale Massie, Ashley Massie, Kirk Jarrott) and all other competitors who adorned the Black Swan cap. Maroochydore Masters will be playing a vital role in next year s centenary on and off the beach and coupled with the huge swell of interest from our past members to represent the club at next year s Aussies we are going to be a formable group. For me personally it s been a pleasure to represent Maroochydore Masters as you Liaison Officer this season. Youth Developments Report Alyce Burnett It has been an absolute pleasure to watch our youth go from strength to strength this year. The season started out with a laid-back club camp to Staddie Island where we had some time to get to know each other and have a bit of fun. This camp definitely highlighted to myself, the other chaperones and the juniors just how great our club is. Since this camp it has been great to see all of the juniors get involved with many different aspects of the club. I have seen a distinct rise in attendance and willingness at many club activities including Patrols, Shimoda, House to House, Sunshine Coast Marathon and other fundraising efforts. On top of this it has been great to see so many people take pride in representing the Black Swan both on and off the beach... I have decided to step down from Youth Development Officer next season but look forward to watching this section of the club flourish into our centenary year and beyond the youth of the club is our future! In closing I put this all to you Whether it be within lifesaving, school or work, always remember the most effective way to do it is to do it. Go out there and chase your dreams! 43

Coach s Report Nathan Greig, Coaching Coordinator Australian Open Titles 7th place overall point score. Australian Youth Championships 1st place unofficial point score. Nipper State 1st place overall point score. World Titles For a small group of athletes there was very little off season with training for the Rescue 2014 World Titles commencing early. The Youth (U19) section of the club had an outstanding titles campaign. Bri Massie won the Ski, Laura Pettigrew the Board and Chelsea Gillett the 200m obstacle. Laura and Cassie Lee then went onto win the Board Rescue and Laura, Cassie, Bri and Chelsea teamed up to win the Taplin Relay. In the Pool Darcy Starr Thomas, Laura Pettigrew, Chelsea Gillett and Cassie Lee teamed up to win the 4 x 50m obstacle relay and Pamela Hendry placed 2nd in the 100m manikin carry with fins. Both Chelsea and Pamela were selected as part of the Australian Team. Junior Activities The Nipper section has continued to get stronger with a new crop of athletes coming through the age groups and new faces joining our program. Maroochydore won the Branch point score for the 7th year in a row and reclaimed the State Title by a massive 130 points on our home beach. It was a huge effort by the nippers and a very dominant team performance. All age groups stood tall over the weekend and raced for each other. The conditions were typical Maroochydore with rips, holes, sweeps and a good swell running. I continually receive comments on the skill standard of our nippers from people outside the club. We have a great bunch of kids here that we need to support and nurture into the future. Many thanks to everyone who assisted over the season with coaching. The more support I have on the beach the more the athletes benefit. We are blessed with a wealth of knowledge in this club - it s important to share it with the next generation. Lastly to Brad Stark (Nipper President); your balanced views on all areas of the nipper program have allowed us to flourish. Thanks for your time, support and guidance with the program. Youth Titles The Youth section of the club made a big impact at the inaugural Youth Championships. Maroochydore won 5 Gold, 2 Silver and 5 Bronze. Mathew Palmer won the U15 Surf Race, Grace Kaihau the U15 Board, Matt Palmer and Jackson Woollett the U15 Board Rescue, Clayton Burnett and Tristan Waller the First Aid and for the 4th time in the past five seasons we won the U15 Female Board Relay with Grace Kaihau, Shae Travers and Ally Clarke. There was no official point score so we tallied the points ourselves and come out on top with Manly 2nd. It was a great effort by all of our athletes; certainly doing the club proud and getting us noticed for all the right reasons. U17 Section The U17 s performed strongly over the Aussies week with Lachlan Masters and Tainui Kaihau leading the U17 Iron out of the water. It s been a very long time since Maroochydore had 2 competitors leading an Australian Iron final and the boys also managed a Bronze in the Board Rescue. Laura Pettigrew finished 3rd in the Board race that was a run up the beach for gold. Earlier in the week she teamed up with Tara Patrick and Cassie Lee for a bronze in the Board relay. U19 Section The U19 section was led by Jye Duffy and Bri Massie with Jye taking medals in the U19 and Open competition. Jye teamed up with Josh Bubba Jones Rew and Jake Dale to win the U19 Ski Relay, and claimed Silver with Josh in the U19 Double, Bronze with Jordan Wood in the Open Double and bronze in the U19 single. Bri teamed up with Alyce Burnett and Nick Bolton in the Open for a Gold and Bronze in the Double and Mixed Double. Bri and Catlin Gilliman both U19 were also a part of the silver medal Open Ski Relay team with Alyce. Senior Club The senior section of the club managed to pick up 4 Gold medals, 4 Silver and 8 Bronze at the Aussie Titles. The Open section was on fire in the ski events. We featured heavily in many finals winning the Taplin Relay and as previously mentioned managed to win the Open Female Double (both for the first time in our history). The men (Jordan and Jye) claimed a Bronze medal in the Double Ski to go with their State Title (the state victory was also a first in our history). Our Open competitors finished the weekend with victory in the Female Taplin. Laura Pettigrew (U17) stepped up as our board paddler and managed to tag Nikki Chapman in around 8th position. Nikki then had the swim of her life to tag Alyce in 1st. Alyce had a tough tussle with Naomi Flood and 2 others around the swim buoys coming in but managed to push her way around the buoys and to win a run up the beach. This was an electrifying moment on the beach and one that will stay with me for a long time, well done girls. First Aid The First Aid section has again performed on the big stage claiming 2 Gold, 1 Silver and 1 Bronze at Aussies. The U15 team of Clayton Burnett and Tristan Waller have gone through the season undefeated as have Fiona Meredith and Maggie Donnelly (Open winners). Fiona and Maggie have now won 6 Australian Titles each! To Lenore and her team awesome effort you are champions. 44

Beach Section Cody Rychvalsky was again the club s stand out performer on the beach with a Silver medal at Aussies. Unfortunately Cody was unable to contest the State Titles with a torn rib cartilage. There are a number of good runners coming through the ranks, hopefully they will transition into the senior club. Boat Section The Boaties have had another great season winning 4 gold at the State Titles in the Boat Relay, U23 Women, U19 Boys and Reserve Grade (Force). At Aussies the U23 Women s were the best performed finishing 4th in the final. Two crews gained the honour of Queensland selection with U23 Women and Reserve Grade (Force) contesting the interstate competition. Masters Our Masters have improved on last year s performance at Aussies finishing 10th overall in the club point score. They walked away with 3 Gold, 9 Silver and 6 Bronze. Katrina Egan was our only individual Gold medalist winning the Board race. Conclusion For Maroochydore to be successful we all need to be pulling in the one direction. Currently there is a good atmosphere under the tent and at training sessions. Everyone at this club has a role to play in being successful and building a culture of success. You need to ask yourself how can I contribute and make this a better club. To the coaches both paid and voluntary, a massive thank you for your input this season. As a team we are working very well together and improving our service to the club. To management and office staff both on and off the beach your support and assistance in making the program and carnival days run smoothly is greatly appreciated. Well done to everyone this season let s have an even better one next year. One Club! 45

Junior Activities Chairman s Report Brad Stark It is with pleasure I report another fantastic and successful season of Maroochydore Nippers and Junior Activities. Again a very busy and challenging season for all involved. The Nipper program on Sunday mornings, with a few minor adjustments have run smoothly, with no major incidents to report as again this season the Junior Activities Committee remain focussed on delivering a well-balanced, all inclusive program in order to challenge all of our young members in a safe and supportive environment. We have enjoyed some excellent conditions on the beach and in the surf and are fortunate not to have needed to relocate or cancel any of our planned Sunday activities, instead being able to adapt to surf conditions and allowing our young members to learn what it takes to be safe and excel in whatever conditions the ocean presents. In what has become tradition, our season launch again was focussed on the annual Rainbow Beach under 8 to Under 15 carnival. The Patrick family again this year did not let us down with a fantastic BBQ which was well supported by the majority of families that attended the carnival. An interesting rendition of the Maroochydore club song was heard (and seen) I m sure by the whole of the Rainbow Beach community. Well lead by our Nipper captains, Zane and Sarah and of course our awesome Club coach Bugsy! I congratulate both Zane and Sarah for playing a terrific role as nipper club captains, leading always by example and doing proud all members of Maroochydore SLSC. You both are a credit to yourselves and your families and should be very proud of how you have represented your club. The lifesaving training section of our club, led by Brad Kildey, has again worked tirelessly in delivering their programs to qualify many more young patrolling members as well as other previous nippers and parents to gain qualifications allowing them to contribute to providing patrols, water safety and first aid. Thank you to all the trainers involved in delivering a high standard of training for our club. On the competitive front, we have enjoyed some greater depth being built in all of our age groups with the competitive section of nippers obviously training hard and showing great commitment to achieve their goals throughout the season. This depth and continual growth has been obvious with the results the Junior club has achieved. I would like to make special mention of our own junior carnival held in November. Amart Sports Maroochydore came on board this year as the major sponsor for this event, clearly an excellent move forward with a fantastic carnival held. Christian and his staff showed a real commitment to being involved with our great club and I look forward to continuing to develop this relationship and continue to build on what is fast becoming known as the best junior carnival on the calendar. It was also very encouraging to see the whole of the club get behind our juniors right the way through from the Board of Management members and our General Manager to many from all sections of our club and parents as well as a number of our senior competitors all pitching in. This was probably one of the strongest showing of members willing to help out on the day that I have seen in my ten year involvement with the nipper program. Thank you to all that leant a hand to make this day a great success. We again proved too strong at the Sunshine Coast Branch titles, coming away victorious and qualifying great numbers across the board in team events of all ages and disciplines. State Youth Championships, what more can be said. Absolute champions winning by an unequalled ever, 130 points!! All competitors and supporters deserve a massive congratulations on what was the most memorable carnival most of us have had any involvement in. It was an experience I will keep fond memories of for many years to come and I am very proud to have had the opportunity to be involved with an amazing group of young competitive members produced by an equally awesome bunch of coaches, age managers and supporting parents. Thank you to each and every person who contributed to this huge result. At the end of the day, full credit goes to each competitor that gave everything they had for both themselves and their mates in a powerful display of Maroochydore Black Swan spirit. Equally memorable was the victorious team of cadets, who maintained the strong momentum and came away champions of the first ever National Youth Championships down at Kirra. Many great results both in individual and team events, well deserved by an extremely committed and talented bunch of young athletes. Perhaps many involved don t yet realise the enormity of representing in their sport at a national level, let alone beating the best the country has to offer in Junior Surf Sports competition. Thank you to Nathan, Backa and Ashley for leading the youth team and of course to Bugsy, Rhys and Glen for preparing our young athletes over a very long season. It is also pleasing to see an increase in the number of parents and other members becoming involved and using their existing lifesaving qualifications and experience to help with the safety of our juniors particularly in the water arenas on Sunday morning. The stance was taken this season by the Junior Activity Committee to not rely on our Under 14 members for water safety on a weekly basis. This decision was met with some concern by a few; however it is evident that it has encouraged a greater responsibility to parents as well as older siblings to contribute in this capacity. This has had the follow on advantage of allowing our Under 14 age group to enjoy an excellent program set by their age managers. This will significantly aid in the long term retention of all the members of the cadets group as they progress through the ranks into the 46

more senior roles they can play in the club in the future. I am hopeful this will also aid in a better environment for them next season as under 15 s, an area which appears to be constantly bombarded by change and uncertainty due to changes in policy from a national and state level. I would like to extend my sincere gratitude to all of our leaders amongst the Junior Activities program. Our fantastic Age Managers, Assistant Age Managers, Voluntary Coaches, Water Safety, Officials, Committee Members, BBQ Assistants, and each and every contributing parent and club member for giving so much of their time and efforts week in and week out. I feel it should never be underestimated the value put on each and every one of you for what you not only contribute to our Junior Surf Lifesaving Program, but I hope in fact that all of you in some way have the pleasure of knowing you are contributing to the development in the lives of many young people and ultimately the terrific young men and women they will all become. It should always be recognised the positive influence you guys have on our young members and their futures both within the surf lifesaving movement and elsewhere. I look forward to continuing all the positive momentum as we continue to lead the way into the future of the Maroochydore Junior Lifesaving program. Thanks again to you all for the experiences and memories I will keep for many years to come. 47

Beach Captain s Report Steven Rychvalsky I have been a member of the Maroochydore Surf lifesaving club for approximately 7 years. This is my first as The Beach Captain. Upon arrival at the club, I unfortunately observed a division between those who competed on the beach to those in the water. Thankfully over the past 7 years I have seen this division all but disappear. So on behalf of the Beach athletes I would like to thank the Members of the club from the Board of Directors, down to the age Managers, and parents, for their support of these beach athletes who make a significant contribution to the club s overall success. I would like to personally acknowledge and thank our Beach Coach Glen Wilson. The successes of our athletes can be directly contributed to his unwavering support, expertise and guidance which has been invaluable. The year started well with good numbers attending beach and track training. We were able to purchase some much need training equipment as well as a Marque cover, not to mention our highly sought after Maroochy Beachies team shirts which, we received a number of supportive and envious comments from rival clubs. The competitive season kicked off at the Rainbow Beach Carnival for Under 8-15 s. We had a strong showing scoring 3 Gold s, 8 Silvers and 5 Bronze. This was then followed by the Met Caloundra Teams Carnival with Silver in the all age relay, and a silver and bronze in the Under 11 female and male relays respectively. We obtained sold results at the Murphy Builders Carnival which was held at our home beach and consisted of Under 15 to open competitors only. We had 12 competitors which achieved 1 Gold, 8 Silver, and 3 Bronze. The Open Men s Relay which was made up of Michael Walpole, Mitchel Harvey, Cody Rychvalsky and Peter Elford came second in the final, Cody also won the U17 Beach Sprint and achieved a Third in the Open Men s Beach Sprint. Unfortunately there was a significant change to the Fasted Man on the Sand series this year. For an unknown reason there was only one round held at Kurrawa which included all the U11- Open competitors. Round 1 and 3 were for U15 Open competitors only. We then were advised that the Murphy Builder Carnival results would stand as Round 1. Then to top it off a decision was made at the beginning of the third round to hold a winner takes all final to be held at the conclusion of the senior state titles. This meant that the culmination of points over the three rounds, which previously determined the overall winner would instead be used to determine the finalists which would run off and the winner takes all. This unfortunately deprived Both Harmana Williams the U15 sprint title and Cody Rychvalsky the U17 flag and Sprint titles as well as the Open Men s Title, which he and Harmana were leading, at the conclusion of the three rounds. Unfortunately Cody was forced out of the finales of both the Queensland Titles and FMOS due to injury. However, this is not to take away from the results of the second round held at Kurrawa, which were impressive to say the least. From a team of approximately 20 athletes we achieved a total of 7 Gold, 4 Silver and 8 Top 10 finishes. This was also our opportunity to unveil the new tent and team shirts. We then moved on to the business end of the season starting with Junior Branch Titles, where we came home with 3 Gold, 7 Silver, 7 Bronze and 12 top 10 finishes. Special mention to Daniel Meggit who blitz them in both the under 11 Flags and Beach sprint to take home the Gold double. Both Mitchel Stint and Isabella Basile won gold in the 1km beach run. At the Junior State Titles we secured 3 Gold, 1 Silver, 1 Bronze and 5 top ten finishes. Daniel Meggit was the stand out performance taking out both the Under 11 Sprints and Flags. Alexandra Clarke won Gold in the 2 km Beach Run. In the Senior States, Michael Walpole made the final of the Open Men s Beach sprint and finished a commendable 6th against an extremely tough field. The season then culminated at the Australian Titles at Kirra. Due to a conflict in event timetables we only had two athletes compete in the Youth Championships, Laura Wallace and Clayton Burnett who unfortunately bowed out after the first 48

round. In the Senior Championships we saw the Under 17 boys relay consisting of Lachlan Masters, Rhys Wolfenden, Tainui Kaihau and Cody Rychvalsky just miss out on a final berth coming in 9th. Not bad for 1 Beachie and 3 water kids that had half an hour practice, well done boys. Cody Rychvalsky was our only individual competitor at the titles and after limited preparation and coming into the event injured he still was able to win silver in the Under 17 Beach Sprint and a 15th in the Flags. I was humbled to see the support shown by a large number of Maroochydore team mates, management, coaching staff and parents who stayed to support Cody during his final, I thank you very much. Cody was also selected to compete for the Queensland Cyclones earlier in the season. He flew down with the team to Newport Beach NSW where he came 1st in Beach Sprint and 4th in the Flags. All in all we had a successful season, Glen has already began planning for next year with an aim to recruit specialist runners, not only compete for the mighty swan but to become part of our patrol family. I would like to thank all those parents who helped officiate throughout the year at our beach events such as Jo Kliese, Helen Patrick, Paula Bamford, Mary McGuiness, Seb Basile as well as all the parents, we couldn t have competed without you so Thank you again I again would like to thank the club as a whole for their support of our Beachies and we will see you again next year. I think it is important to realise that the Beach competition plays a vital role in the overall success of our club. This has become evident with the points accumulated by our fellow Sunshine Coast clubs at the recent Australian Championships, which helped elevate them up the leader board. 49

There were many Maroochydore members that were involved in Shimoda activities last year and good times and successful training was had by all. Many thanks to the organizing skills of Ako Hisamatsu over her 20 year involvement in the sister club relationship. Ako is stepping aside in 2015 for Shu Myabe to now manage the future training squads for the Maroochydore trip and our August visit to Japan. Trainers in Surf swimming, Body surfing, Ski paddling, Board paddling and beach are always welcome, make yourselves known to anyone on the Shimoda committee if you are interested in assisting this December Committee members are Alan Vidler, Maggie Donnelly, Fran Boulton, Peter Dunn and Brad Kildey. Your input would be greatly appreciated. In the 2014 training camp we had some leisure activities. A day trip to Australia Zoo, many thanks to Kate for arranging this. A good time was had by all. The Africa section was a real mission and worthwhile. Climbing Mount Coolum was a huge success, the record is there to be broken for anyone who is up to it, make my day!!! And some beach activities with the Youth group. This year we have had the largest number of applicants to go to Shimoda than ever before, a true testament to the success of the sister club relationship. See you there. 17 Mal Pratt Youth Development Foundation Shane Bridley, Chairman The Foundation s relationship with The Smith Family continues to reap dividends in terms of referrals of potential beneficiaries, with a record number of 12 youth applicants referred from that source during the 2014/2015 season. 1 additional application was received from another external source, and a further 2 applications were received and approved for existing club members. Of that total number of applications received (15), whilst all were approved, 4 did not proceed for various reasons. Of those external referrals, 3 obtained their Surf Rescue Certificate during the season, with 2 of them going on to complete a full season of Patrol duties. A big thank you goes out to the club Chief Training Officer, Brad Kildey, for the assistance and guidance he provided to those new club members. 2 of the external referrals completed Junior Activities during the season, and the remaining 4 are undertaking swim training with a view to commencing Junior Activities in Season 2015/2016. The 2 existing club members who received support, are both patrolling members who also compete for the club. A great outcome for all beneficiaries, and for the club, and early indications are that all 11 will continue their involvement with the Foundation/Club in 2015/2016. In another first for the Foundation/Club, we completed our first Asset purchase during the year, of craft/ski, for the sole use of a Foundation beneficiary. This Asset/ski will remain the property of the Foundation, for ongoing use by current/future Foundation beneficiaries. With increased Foundation beneficiaries comes increased responsibilities, and I am pleased to advise that a number of club members came forward during the year to form a Foundation Committee and share the decision making and workload in providing the necessary support for those beneficiaries. Thank you to Peter Aiken, Nick Clatworthy, Bernie Duncan, Jenni Belcher and Phil Lyons for your valued involvement, I look forward to a greater sharing of the various responsibilities/ operations of the Foundation with you in season 2015/2016. For the first time since the establishment of the Foundation 11 years ago, and due to increased beneficiary numbers and falling returns on Foundation investments, funding has required close consideration during the year past, and will continue to be required in future years. Options to limit the number of Foundation beneficiaries supported each year, and/or to initiate fund raising to support additional costs, will be considered by the Foundation Committee and discussed with the Club s Director of Finance and Resources going forward, to achieve a desired outcome. The future for disadvantaged children/youth of the community can only continue to look brighter through the Foundations offered program of Community Involvement/Learning/Earning and Sport & Recreation. 51

Centenary Book Committee Annual Report Ralph Devlin - Club Historian, Peter Rigby - Chief Researcher The momentum has been steadily building into the celebration of our Centenary year: The production of the Centenary History, a decade in the making, is entering the final phase with printers now being approached for quotes. There will be three volumes- Volume One Volume Two Volume Three The Black Swan Record, Competition Loyalty, Guts & Glory There will be over 600 pages of text and 200 amazing photographs in this Epic. Volume Three will be launched in late October 2015 when our 176 Australian Surf Life Saving Champions will be capped. Volumes One and Two will be launched on New Year s Day A side project pursued by Chief Researcher Peter Rigby is the preservation of up to 200 photographs by the Sunshine Coast Library at Maroochydore, courtesy of their Curator, Carol Hawley. A big thank you to Carol, and to the Sunshine Coast Council, for their support. Members will be able to easily access the Maroochydore Surf Life Saving Club Collection for many years to come. This has taken many, many hours of Peter s and Carol s time, so well done, Pete. Another Rigby project has been the collating of all available information on our Foundation and Pioneer Families, who had businesses in Nambour, or farmed in the Maroochy River/Dunethin Rock and Bli Bli areas. These efforts came to a head when Clint Robinson OAM and Lenore Grice, our SLSA Hall of Fame Members, hosted these important Families to a lunch in May. Clint and Lenore presented our story of the early years while Alyce Burnett prepared a PowerPoint of wonderful old photos to illustrate their talks. Thanks to our Staff - Lauren, Chelsea, Christie and Melissa - for your expertise and enthusiastic support for this event, and generally over the back half of this season. Thanks also to Michelle Burnett for your earlier support and your ongoing work for our small committee. Yet more thanks are due to members of the Bli Bli on Maroochy Historical Society for your assistance in piecing together our early history. Wait until you see it, folks, you will be proud. Our History would be incomplete without a list of our members who served in World War I and World War II. A huge thank you to Cheryl Petersen, of the famous 1920 s to 1950 s Petersen Clan, for your generosity in sharing the fruits of your Adopt a Digger campaign for our District. Sterling work. and in competition. The first costumes, male and female, also reflected this design. We set out to copy them, to honour our Founders. On 22 March 2015 a Junior Club Colour Party led a spectacular Parade of 29 Clubs on the final day of our Queensland Youth Championships at Maroochydore Beach. Two Centenary (Junior) flags were flown and two full March Past Teams also competed. A week later, on 29 March 2015, our (Senior) Centenary flags were carried in a fine Colour Party, led by Life Members John Baxter and Narelle Souter. Narelle wore our Prototype Centenary Costume as well, and looked magnificent in them. A big thank you to our Club Sponsors, Finz, for producing our Centenary costumes, which were ready by the Aussies and were paraded in force at both Youth and Open Championships at North Kirra. What a great visual way to herald our Centenary Season. Also a big thank you to all those members who have contributed so far to this mammoth task - Editor in Chief Kirk Williamson, Photo Editor Kerry Taylor, all our Chapter Editors, and those who contributed photos and stories. At time of writing, the Centenary History Book Committee has the following events planned up to and including 1 January 2016: Sunday 3 May 2015 Foundation & Pioneer Families Centenary Lunch. Saturday 6 June 2015 Club Members Centenary Presentation (in conjunction with the Maroochydore SLSC 99th Birthday Party). Friday 23 October 2015 Dinner to acknowledge and to cap our 176 Australian Surf Life Saving Championships Gold Medallists, Official Launch of Maroochydore SLSC Centenary History, Volume Three, The Black Swan Record Loyalty, Guts and Glory. Friday 1 January 2016 Official Launch of Maroochydore SLSC Centenary History, Volumes One & Two. Next, the Flags Project, which gained a life of its own! The research of our early history revealed that on 15 January 1916, at its second meeting held at Deans Boatshed on Petrie Creek, the Club decided its colours - Royal Blue, Canadian Red and a Pale Blue star. Early photos showed the design of our first, second and third flags which were flown at training 52

Board of Finance and Resources Report Sophie Croucher, Director On behalf of the Board of Management, I wish to present the fully audited financial statements for the Financial Year. The Club s cash balances have remained fairly stable as a result of the stringent budget established by the Finance Committee at the commencement of the season. The Directors on the Board have been most understanding and have endeavored to restrict expenditure where possible. Our accounts as at April 30, 2015 shows the Club s trading account balance at $62,190 with creditors owing of $52,754 and debtors to be collected at $44,341. The Supporters Club represents itself as a $78K non-current debtor, being the working capital required to be transferred between the two Clubs if wound up on that date. The Surf Club s total income for the year was $1,464,704 and resulted in a profit of -$7953 after depreciation ($304k). This result is due to the donation from the Supporters Club totaling $1,140,536. This represents an increase of $122k on last year. The Supporters Committee has been extremely supportive of the endeavors of the SLSC by providing a stable revenue source. It is only with their stewardship that the Surf Club is able to remain in a solid financial position. The Financial Statements of the Club shows borrowings made up of one commercial bill of $1,100,000. This facility represents the borrowings for the acquisition of the Sixth Avenue property. During the year, a voluntary principal reduction of $17,500 was made to this facility. The second facility is a Bank Bill Business Loan, which was initially drawn for the renovation. As at April 30, this facility had a balance of $458,784 however that includes available redraw of $74k. As outlined in the Think Tank Session debt reduction was a clear focus of the Club and this has been adhered to. The supporting schedules included in the financial statements list the operating income and expenditure of the Club. Please note these do not include items capitalised as this is captured on the balance sheet. As per previous reports, our fundraising efforts are extremely important to how we function and I wish to take the opportunity to thank Fran and her Board for their efforts. I would also like to reiterate how important it is for the Club to come together for the Annual Surf Safe Appeal and other fundraising endeavors including raffles. Next year, our 100 th year is shaping up to be both exciting and challenging. We have many projects underway including the renovation of our Club facilities for the juniors and of course our celebrations to mark the 100 th year. Lastly, I would like to acknowledge the Finance Committee for their knowledge and advice provided over the last two years, also to Craig Thomas (previous GM) for his hard work in the finance department. Welcome to Lindsey and I wish you all the best for the coming years. TREASURERS REPORT SUPPORTERS COMMITTEE 2015 On behalf of the Supporters Board, I wish to present the audited financial statements. A comparison of the Supporters Account s compared to last year is as follows: General Account: $8,375 $60,295 - Gaming Account: $105,988 $160,125 - Keno; $27,325 $16,499 - Contingency: $72,167 $39,163 - Jackpot: $44,002 $12 - It is pleasing to note that the Supporters Club has performed sufficiently well to enable an increased level of donation to the Surf Life Saving Club. Of this increased donation circa $90k has been put towards the loans voluntarily ($74k available in redraw). There continues to be strong competition across the Sunshine Coast particularly with our close neighbors. In saying that, there has been growth demonstrated both in revenue and profits. Total income for the financial year was $8,026, and profit before donations $1,140, A brief departmental break down is as follows. Restaurant income generated totaled $2,957,915 with a gross profit margin of 64% and a profit of $478,799. This is an improvement of last year. Lindsey has a strong background in the food and catering department and we look forward to his influence on the kitchen. Functions have been rolled into the restaurant reporting due to the nature of the food preparation. This area is starting to take off again with solid bookings over the coming few months. Bar turnover has increased slightly to $2,159,494 but relatively flat. Gross profit margin sits at 68% and a gross profit of $1,462,268 was recorded for the department. Gaming we made some considerable grounds in this area following the change in layout last year and the upgraded machines that we have invested in. The net income for this department totaled $2,475,250 up from $2,282,029 at the same time last year. The profit from the department totaled $1,237,725 also an increase from last year at $1,043,715. TAB continues the trend of negative growth, however it is still a drawcard for our patrons and the flow on effect of their patronage is accounted for in the other departments, particular the bar. Total income was $59,311 with profit of $7,258. This is down from last year profit of $14,590. Keno as per TAB this is a draw card and patronage is felt in the bar and other gaming areas. Total profit for the year stood at $27,811. As per most service industries, wages and inputs continue to be a major focus with close monitoring occurring, Whilst the year has stable, I believe the Club is in in a sound position for the exciting and challenging 12 months ahead of us including the hosting of the Australian Titles and various functions surrounding this and also our 100 th year celebrations. Finally, I would like to acknowledge and thank Craig Thomas for his passion for the Gaming Machines and the work he has done in up-skilling the committee in this regard and the improvements made in the department. 58
