2 A word from our Nipper Chairman Welcome to Maroochydore Nippers. At Maroochydore, we are able to deliver a life saving program that educates surf awareness, promotes healthy surf/ life ac vity, offers community assistance which can lead to life long friendships. Our program is designed to deliver Queensland youth the opportunity to develop and challenge themselves intellectually through Champion Lifesaver events and gaining life saving awards to the mul tude of events on the sand and in the water. Not everyone has to be an iron man so our dedicated team of Assistant and Age Managers spend many hours helping everyone achieve and challenge themselves to help build self confidence and help achieve the goals that our nippers may want to achieve. The four key components of our program entail Life Saving, Surf skill development, Surf Sports and a healthy social network. Our Maroochydore Surf life saving club is celebra ng it's 100 year anniversary this season so our club has provided a valuable community service to the Sunshine Coast over a long me. We ac vely encourage all our nipper families to get involved one way or another to help us all out so we can help create wonderful memories for our nippers for the years that lay ahead of them. I, along with the Junior Ac vity Commi)ee, welcome you all on board. I sincerely hope that you enjoy being a part of our club. I'm really looking forward to the season ahead and I look forward to seeing you all on the beach. Q. What do children in Surf Life Saving do? A. Depending on their age group, Children will cover sprints and flags, swimming, board paddling, wading, basic CPR/first aid skills, junior development and lots of FUN ac vi es. They will also learn surf lifesaving skills, surf awareness, and intrinsically develop personal and emo onal skills. Q. Junior Awards what are these for my child? A. Each age group award has sessions that they par cipate in to acquire relevant skills and knowledge. They will need to a)end and par cipate in all of the compulsory sessions to a)ain the award. They must also complete the pool and Beach Evalua on to obtain the award. Q. Does my child have to be able to swim? A. Yes, each age group has specific requirements for swimming ability. All children will complete a Pool Evalua on including a swim and a float which clubs conduct. This is carried out before par cipa ng in any Junior Ac vi es session to assess their swimming and self-survival ability in the water. This will determine whether they can progress to Junior Ac vi es: They will then be required to complete a Beach Evalua on (Run-Swim-Run). The next step is for them to train to complete the Compe on Evalua on consis ng of an ocean water swim. This allows them to compete at inter-club carnivals. Only those who wish to compete are required to complete the Compe on Evalua on. Is this a Learn to Swim program? Kirk Jarro) Director Junior Ac vi es A. NO. Although your child will benefit enormously and increase their confidence from exposure to open water based ac vi es including swimming and board paddling, we do not provide specific learn to swim training or stroke correc on.

3 FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS Q. My child is 12 today (born 5th October), what age group will he be in? A. The age group that your child is calculated to be in is the age they are as at the 30th September, therefore your child was 11 on the 30th September (turned 12 on the 5th Oct) and therefore is classed as being in the under 12 age group (even though they are 12). A child who has their twelth birthday on the 30th July would be placed in the Under 13 age group. Q. Does my child change age groups if their birthday is during a season? A. No. The age group for each child is determined by their age as at 30 September. i.e. If a child turns 8 on 30 September, they would be in U9 s for that season. If a child turns 8 on 1 October, they would be in U8 s for that season. Q. My child s friend s birthday puts him in different age group and they want to be together. A. Sorry the rules are that the children are placed in the age groups where their birthday falls it may be good for them to be in different age groups, they can make new friends and socialise before and after the training sessions. Q. How o:en do I bring my child to the beach? A. Each discipline and age groups have designated training sessions each week. Most are once per week and on Sunday mornings, (check with Club office). Q. What does my child need? Bathers, a Club cap, high vis top, water bo)le, long sleeved t-shirt or long sleeved rash top, a sun hat, a towel and sunscreen. 9 Competition Competition is quite possibly the most successful recruiting tool for the Surf Life Saving Movement. The Surf Sports program offers a wide range of competition events, such as beach based, surf and pool water events along with events such as R&R, march past and multi skill events like first aid and champion lifesaver. There are events for all ages and skills, culminating in the Junior Queensland State Championship each year. Who can compete? U8 - U14s age groups compete at carnivals. There are no competitions for U6 & U7 age groups. Any nipper who has completed their Junior Competition evaluation run-swim-run can compete. Where are carnivals held? Carnivals are mainly held on the Sunshine Coast although some U11-14 carnivals occasionally compete on the Gold Coast. A calendar is always on nipper notice board in nipper room. How long do the carnivals go for? U8-U10 Carnivals are run as one carnival in their respective age groups and are non-competitive and are usually held over 1 day. U11-U14 carnivals can be held over one or two days (Sat & Sun). Most carnivals marshal approx. 7.45am, with a club warm up being held at 7am. Most carnivals involve long hours so be prepared to be at the beach most of the day. A list of what to take, where to meet are always given by your Age Manager prior to any event. How to enter? You can access carnival nomination forms via the Maroochydore Surf Lifesaving Club website or ask your Age Manager for a copy or collect one from the club office. There will also be an online version sent to you with the carnival circular when nominations open. Entries are then ed to lifesaving@maroochysurfclub.com.au and cc your Age Manager of your intention to compete. Closing date for carnivals is normally approx. 10 days before the carnival, however close dates will always be communicated to you. The costs to enter in to a carnival is covered by the club. This means that if a member/potenal member will not complete and sign the form their applicaon for membership or renewal will be rejected. Informaon regarding Blue Cards and Child Protecon Policy can be found online at Forms are available at the Club website or Club office. PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT Each new family to Maroochydore must a)end a brief presentaon on Parent Parcipaon. The nipper programme at Maroochydore is successful due to the large number of parents and club members who connue to assist us and devote me and energy into making our nippers future lifesavers. Nippers does not work without parent volunteers. There are many ways in which you can help and we encourage all parents to chose something that suits them. All parent helpers must have a Blue Card Working With Children Check. It is a requirement of the Maroochydore Surf Life Saving Club and Surf Life Saving Queensland (SLSQ) for all members over the age of 18 who work with Children or Young People to complete a Blue Card Working with Children Check. This process is confidenal and assists the Club in our duty of care for providing a safe environment for your children. Applicaon forms are available via download on the club website or from the office. 1. Nipper Parent parent helper (BBQ, setup Nipper day, help with set up for carnivals, willing helper). 14 Junior Preliminary Skills EvaluaIon IntroducIon Many acvies that will be completed by children as part of junior acvies will be conducted in the water. To ensure that all children have a suitable swimming ability to allow them to parcipate in these acvies, SLSQ has developed a Junior Preliminary Skills Evaluaon for each age group. 1. Pool EvaluaIon-done at swim lesson or swim training Every junior member is required to parcipate in the Pool Evaluaon, prior to any junior aciviies being undertaken. It includes a pool swim, and a med survival float. This must be completed before any water acvity is undertaken. The intent of this is to conduct an evaluaon of each junior member s swimming and water survival ability for the informaon of the member, parent, and age manager. Following the Pool EvaluaIon Any child that does not meet the required Pool Evaluaon level cannot parcipate in any junior acvies unl the child can successfully complete the Pool Evaluaon. Further it is advised that club s liaise with parents to suggest that external swim training be provided to improve the child s swimming ability. Any child that does complete the Pool Evaluaon successfully must then complete the Competency Beach (OPEN OCEAN) Evaluaon (Run Swim Run). 2. Competency Beach EvaluaIon-Ocean Run-Swim-Run Every junior acvies member must also complete the Competency Beach Evaluaon (Run-Swim-Run) prior to any junior acvies compeon being undertaken, and prior to gaining their age award. This ensures that all children can demonstrate a standard of competence to enable preliminary levels of survival skills at a beach with condions similar to what would be experienced during weekly junior acvies programs. This is an SLSQ standard. NOTE: It is not an assessment which if not completed competently precludes the child from becoming a member or connuing with junior development or training acvies. Following the Beach Evaluation Any child that does not meet the required beach evaluaon level, they will require a higher level of supervision when involved in water based acvies at the discreon of the club. The club may assign these kids to one specific group. It is a requirement that these children must be supervised with a 1:1 rao unl the child can successfully complete the Beach Evaluaon (Run Swim Run). Those nippers who do not complete the Competency Beach Evaluaon (Run-Swim-Run) are ineligible to partake in intra-club water based compeon and cannot gain their relevant junior age award. Children will be given 3 goes to pass this level of proficiency. Any child that does complete the Beach Evaluaon (Run-Swim-Run) successfully is eligible to connue parcipang in all learning outcomes for their respecve age award and can progress to age group appropriate water based junior acvies. Should the child wish to compete in inter-club compeon they must complete the Junior Compeon Evaluaon. 3. Junior CompeIIon EvaluaIon - Ocean run-swim-run compeiion distance From the age of 7 (Under 8) nippers may begin to compete in inter-club compeon. To ensure that all junior members who wish to compete have the ability, strength, and fitness standard to complete the course they must be able to complete the junior compeon evaluaon for their age group. The junior compeon evaluaon is based on the swim compeon distances as set out in the current SLSA Australian Surf Sports Manual for that age group and is a standard in the form of an open water swim. 2 Opportunies will be given to pass. All distances and stage of evaluaon our outlined in chart page 16.
