4 ABOUT MUDJIMBA SLSC Saturday 21st September 1996 was a very proud day for all Club members when the flags were put up on Mudjimba Beach for the first time. The community of Mudjimba and surrounding areas would get a dedicated group of people to provide a service that had been needed for a number of years. The IRB, Surf Truck, Rescue Boards, Rescue Tubes, Stretchers, Oxy-Vivas gathered to form the Club, were stored at members houses at Mudjimba and Pacific Paradise until a kind man, Les Molle allowed us to use his single garage on the corner of Mudjimba Beach Road and Kawana Street to store it all. Mudjimba SLSC had a base to work from however a single garage was not big enough to store all of our equipment so the truck went to someone s house and the IRB went somewhere else. They had to be gathered together for each patrol and put away at the end of the patrol. In 1998 Club members banded together and built the Beach Tower. Construction of the Clubhouse commenced in September 1999 and was finished by December Mudjimba Nippers commenced in October 2001 and it made Mudjimba SLSC complete. Hard work was done by the Junior Activities Committee to set up the Nippers program and it has been a great asset to the Club. Nipper parents contribute to the success of Nippers and have assisted the Club further by becoming patrolling members. We look forward to many of the Nippers continuing on to become patrolling members. THE CLUB EMBLEM OUR PROUD HISTORY The Osprey was decided upon because of its presence in the sand dunes. They can be regularly spotted hovering over the water at Mudjimba. The Mudjimba SLSC colours of navy blue, teal and white were decided upon because they represented the Mudjimba and Pacific Paradise area. Teal and navy blue are also Pacific Paradise Primary School colours, and navy blue and white are both the North Shore Soccer Club and the North Shore Jets AFL Club colours. RED & YELLOW FLAGS The red and yellow colours found their way into Surf Life Saving clubs from the international code of naval signals, in which the sign for 'man overboard' is a square divided diagonally between red and yellow. Flags and signs have always been used to signify either safe or dangerous areas to swim, but it wasn't until the 1930's that the red and yellow colours came to represent Surf Life Saving in Australia. In 1935, red and yellow replaced the blue and white flags which had been used in the 1920's to mark safe bathing areas, although the colours were divided diagonally, unlike the horizontal red and yellow used today. 1

8 PARENT RESPONSIBILITIES HOW TO GET INVOLVED We are all volunteers so the more hands, the lighter the work and a great way to meet new friends. Please offer to help as we are all here for our children and we all want them and us, to enjoy the season. Parents are required to remain on the beach during the Nippers activities, so why not join in and help. We are always running SRC (Surf Rescue Certificate) or BM (Bronze Medallion) courses, so ask about participating.
