I hesitate to use the phrase highs and lows because the challenges posed by the earthquakes late in 2010 and early in 2011 have certainly brought out the best in the swimming community individual swimmers have overcome adversity to achieve at the highest levels, whilst organisationally we may all take credit for our achievements at club, regional and national level. We congratulate our swimmers who have achieved national representation, and who may have also broken national records. Likewise our regional championships have evidenced another fine group of swimmers coming through at all age levels and in all strokes. We acknowledge not only the swimmers achievements, but also that of the Coaches - from the full time professionals in the major clubs, through to the unpaid volunteers in the smaller clubs throughout our region. In looking forward, there is much to do. The last three months have seen additional strain placed on families, clubs and pools, as we comes to terms with the effects of earthquakes. As the initial post quake period changes into the drudgery of long term, accommodations to counter the effects of reduced pool space and lesser facilities, I encourage everyone to do their best to ensure that the spirit of cooperation becomes synonymous with the name SCWC. Let this time of challenge bring out the very best in us all. I commend to you Project Vanguard. This initiative by Swimming New Zealand shall ensure that swimming nationally is taken forward in a structured and coordinated manner. This is not only important because it will ensure future funding at the national level, but it will also assist and coordinate the support provided to and by SCWC at club and regional level as well. Clubs and Regions have had been able to provide extensive input over almost two years and on a number of occasions. I encourage SCWC to continue to support this initiative I believe that the changes that result will be very positive for swimming at every level, from club to international competition. In conclusion I would like to thank the members of the Management Committee for their efforts over the last year. Their knowledge of swimming, unwavering support for their chosen sport, and selfless dedication is sincerely appreciated. I also I acknowledge the support that our Administrator, Jenny Johnston, has given to SCWC over the last year. I shall look back over the last three years, in my time as President of SCWC, with fondness. I have appreciated the opportunity to work with many wonderful people, and to have been able to witness so many fabulous performances by some exceptional young athletes. I wish to offer all my support to my successor, and have no doubt that Swimming in our region shall continue to go from strength to strength in future. Gill Cain, President 4

Administrator s Report The past year has been a varied one with significant highs punctuated by major challenges and interruption. Earthquakes have preoccupied many of us since September, even more so since February with severe disruption to our members. The Pike River Mine disaster in November was a deeply distressing time to our West Coast clubs, particularly Greymouth. I would like to offer once again my deepest sympathy to those who have lost families and friends, their homes or their livelihoods through these tragic events. During the course of these events I received a staggering amount of messages from many of our friends in the swimming community from throughout the country wanting offer their support and assist in any way they could. For me, this was very humbling and deeply moving some were regions and people that I have contact with on a regular basis, others were not, others were smaller clubs (some of which I hadn t even heard of) - all displaying huge generosity of spirit and kindness. Several clubs, regions, and organisations wanted to donate money following the February earthquake and to this end the Swimming Canterbury West Coast Charitable Trust has been recently formed. While the end of the season was affected with huge disruption it is also important to acknowledge the positives from throughout the year. Junior carnival participation increased and numbers were up significantly at the Memorial Meet and Development Championships. It is encouraging to see numbers growing in these areas as these are the foundations of our sport. Numbers were much the same at the Canterbury West Coast Championships; the qualifying times had been tightened for the first time in several years to ensure that competition remained high. For the first time our region hosted the South Island Country & Town meet in Greymouth. This is a wonderful facility, thank you to the West Coast clubs for their hard work which ensured a very successful meet. Our teams did very well at national meets, breaking an unprecedented amount of regional and New Zealand records, and our relay teams also featured well. I would have to say, however, that I cannot understand why regional relays are currently included at all national meets. It is incomprehensible that a swimmer can achieve the pinnacle of national events (NZ Opens) but is denied the opportunity to represent their region at it. To my knowledge this does not happen in any other sport; thus it is important that if we as members wish to see such policies change, that we take part and offer feedback to SNZ in forums such as competition reviews when the occasion arises. The workload on our officials remains high and it is encouraging to see more people stepping up to help out. Thank you to the Technical Committee which is working hard in this area, and to all of you willing to stand on the pool deck for such long periods so that our swimmers can continue to enjoy their sport. Thank you also to the Management Committee, the coaches, and hardworking club committees who continue to do such fine work for their members. The standard of professionalism brought by our officials, coaches, and volunteers is impressive, and I am most appreciative of the friendly and willing help and support always extended to me by all of you during the course of my duties; it is that which makes my job so enjoyable. I look forward to working with you all during the next season. Jenny Johnston, Administrator SELECTORS REPORT During last year the Selectors have been very pleased with the results from our swimmers in the relays. The swimmers have shown great progress and that they can compete against any team in New Zealand and bring home the medals. Thanks to the team managers who volunteer their time to attend our national meets and to the coaches who between them pick the best team for the relays. Well done to all. During the year the Selectors have chosen applicants for the Sport Canterbury Awards, Richard Hadlee Awards and the SNZ State Awards. Canterbury has had great success at these Awards and it is very pleasing to see. The results are shown elsewhere in this report. Gill Cain, Marlene Morrison, Fiona Campbell - Selectors 6

CLUB REPORTS AQUAGYM: The past year has been a time of highs and lows ranging from the huge boost we received with appointment of a new Head Coach, medal winning swims both at international and national levels to the sudden decrease in pool space and training time due to the earthquakes. In true AquaGymspirit, the Club has not given up. By calling on other Clubs, Christ s College, Kings Swim Pool and the Christchurch City Council, remaining flexible and keeping our eye on the ball, our coaches have been able to offer a reasonable training programme. Going forward, the Club s challenges are membership retention and growth, development of a sustainable financial income and accessing permanent pool space. The Board has explored sponsorship opportunities and Club amalgamation this year, to no avail. The current environment in Christchurch does not lend itself to successful sponsorship opportunities, and the QE2 Swim Club declined the invitation to explore amalgamation with our Club. Club membership decreased due to the impact of the earthquake on families lives and the training schedule reduced by 20% in While we have managed to access a range of pools for training, the coaches and swimmers do not enjoy the certainty of a dedicated training pool. Despite these challenges, the swimmers motivation to continue training and swimming is high and our coaches commitment to do whatever it takes to provide a training programme is outstanding. We were buoyed by the wonderful generosity from the North Canterbury Club who shared their pool space and time with us so our swimmers could continue to prepare for national and international meets. The Board remains focused on potential opportunities that may arise with the Christchurch City Council to secure permanent pool space. Club amalgamation also remains a possibility and will be back on the Board agenda should the outcome of the ongoing Christchurch City Council swim coaching review impact on the future of the Clubs who rely on CCC funded coaches. AquaGym Swim Club relies on volunteers to maintain and develop the Club infrastructure and provide meet and swimmer support. One behalf of the Board, I acknowledge the family members who step up time and again for fundraising, catering, meet support, travel coordination, coordination of meet entries to name but a few. Volunteering gives a lot back to the volunteer. I encourage those of you who are thinking about becoming involved, to do so. This AGM sees the departure of two Club stalwarts, Ruth Gamblin and Mary Leota. On behalf of the Club, I thank you for the commitment you have given so generously, especially during the period of change which demanded a great deal from those in governance. We wish you well in your new endeavours. I also express appreciation to John Gamblin who is now handing over the role of Coaching Fees officer to Neil Porter, while agreeing remain in the role of HR officer. This is a critical role for the Board who requires support in their employer duties. The Club had many successes in the pool over the past year. Nationally we ranked 4 th in overall points at the NZ Long Course Age Group Championships and 6 th at the NZ Opens. At the 2011 Australian age Group Championships our team made their mark with personal bests, qualifying for finals and with George Schroder, Abbie Johnston and Sophie Batchelor achieving podium placings. Special mention needs to be made of Sophia Batchelor who continues to produce outstanding performances in and out of the pool. Her NZ Open silver medal in the 200 Back final booked her a spot in the NZ team for 2011 Shanghai World champs. She was selected for the 2011 Youth Commonwealth Meet, won Bronze for 200 Back event in the Monaco leg of the 2011 Mare Nostrum Swim Series and was awarded two awards including the Emerging National Swimmer of the Year after a swag of national age group records and the National Short Course Swimmer of the Year. Leanne Speechley was awarded a SNZ scholarship to attend the Australian Age Group championship as well as Prime Minister s scholarship to attend a training camp in Barcelona and the Mare Nostrum Swim Series. The Club acknowledges this support which has provided our Head Coach with outstanding professional development opportunities. Finally, I thank the Board members for their support during the past year, our Head coach and her team for their continued commitment and readiness to do what it takes to get the job done and all of you for your ongoing commitment to the Club. Maria McEntyre, President 11

BURNHAM: We certainly have had a season to remember, and not for all the good reasons. This season started off on a positive note with the re-introduction of Learn to Swim. After last year s no go due to lack of volunteers it was great to see enough people put up their hand for this. I would like to thank Elva and her team for the organization of Learn to Swim, not an easy job. Winter swimming last year was back on track with swimmers taking the opportunity to continue with their training during the winter months. This proved quite beneficial to those who took part. This year however due to the earthquake and lack of spaces at Christchurch pools we are unable to offer this. Of course the season was cut short. Who would have known that as we bid each other farewell on the 21 st February that we would in fact be saying goodbye for the season. We were all lucky in the club that no one has suffered greatly as a result of the quakes. The number of swimmers in the club could always be more and a drive at the beginning of the season may be needed to entice more people to the club. Once again a huge thank you must go to Sue for her continuing superb role as Head Coach. Sue, you are the glue that holds us together, Thank you. Thank you also to the Club coaches who have also given up their time to do this job. I also express my thanks to everyone on the committee for their help this season, long may it continue. As this is my first year ever as president of anything I would finally like to extend my heartfelt thank you to everyone who has helped me in this role. I look forward to the future of the Burnham Swim Club. Mark Nelis,President CHRISTCHURCH: not received GREYMOUTH: Welcome all to another celebration of a brilliant swim season with many highlights. Firstly I would like to acknowledge and thank the Officials who without their support we couldn t run our meetings indeed the West Coast couldn t. These are Ric Cairney, Peter Watson, Barb Roberts, Wouter Van Platerengan and Brian Flanagan. In addition we have our brilliant team of timekeepers led by Tim Brownlee and the new IOT s who have completed their qualifications this year. I would like to acknowledge and thank the committee and committee members but most especially Margaret Crawford for her tireless efforts, her enthusiasm and efficiency. Hand in hand is Tanya Whitmore who has moved up to the position of Meet Manager, with Sue Glue and Helen Hughes have managed the Swim Meets from what we would see as effortless but from what I know requires an amazing amount of time, effort, knowledge and just plain old hard work. I wish to thank you the swimmers and your parents who have competed, participated and turned up regularly for your swim classes. Your efforts, your behaviours and positive outlooks really make it a joy for your coaches to continue working with you and also special thanks to our coaches who are led by Paul Crawford who coach on a volunteer basis they are not paid but put in their hours for the benefit of you kids, you swimmers and you parents. Thank you to Trophies Manager Melva Crampton for the work put in, keeping the trophies up to date, identified, knowing them and having them engraved. Melva also looks after the club race nights with the handicapping and although she makes light of it I am always blown away by her handicapping which by and large keeps the kids coming in at roughly about the same time. This makes for good racing and extends our swimmers. I acknowledge the pool staff this year have really worked well with the club to ensure that the club and you swimmers have been able to continue using this facility seeminglessly and to this end I note that the other swimmers who use this complex acknowledge the club and its swimmers as being a positive 12

use of the pool in something to applaud and engenders good pr. So I thank you all for representing this club in a positive and funfilled way. The season has been quite an amazing one. The Buller West Coast committee has worked really hard for the three clubs here on the Coast. To this end the three carnivals and the West Coast championships have been run and we have gone from strength to strength. Our first carnival was a good run through with lessons learned which were put to good effect in the West Coast champs and then culminating in our running the South Island Country and Town with over 190 swimmers from all over the South Island. It was a great festival of swimming for two full days and at one stage we had over 400 people in the complex all associated with the meeting. The Greymouth Club was well represented and didn t we do well. The plaudits for the meet especially the West Coast and the South Island Country and Town champs must go to those two tireless dynamos Marg Crawford and Tanya Whitmore. It was great to see that swimming has improved so much in the season which showed up at the South Island Country and Town with everybody doing pb s. For me it was a great occasion to be part of and I would like to thank at this time those helpers and officials some of you whose children were not swimming who came in to help, volunteer your time a supreme effort. And to parents don t forget next season is there for you to join in.there are two spin offs; the first is in light of the terrible drowning statistics in New Zealand that your kids who are part of this club who have learnt to swim and compete will find it extremely difficult to part of the awful statistics. This also shows up in the school sports when your kids compete in their own school sports, then the inter district sports that they are streets ahead of kids who do not swim competitively for this club. The second spin off is that your kids are part of a vibrant successful and pretty a well organised and pretty well a fun filled club where they learn to compete and compete well in a safe caring environment, they learn resilience and a good work ethic which will stand them in very good stead in their later life especially in school and you will also note that in their winter sports they will be so much fitter than most of the other kids that they may be playing sport with. This club is a competitive one. I know its hard for new parents and you swimmers coming in to learn organisational skills surrounding competing namely travelling to off the Coast carnivals, training warm ups, marshalling, racing, setting times and of course the cost. But I would suggest to you that it is money extremely well spent if you commit fully to the programme that is set out by this club. I would like to commend Connor Kilkelly for the work that he has put in, he qualified for the Nationals, swam at the Nationals and finaled those Nationals putting himself in the top ten of his age of group swimmers in the whole of New Zealand. That is a fantastic achievement and one that I would hold up to you younger swimmers who would like to progress your swimming. As in all clubs there are difficulties in meeting the needs of all swimmers but I believe that this club has done a better job than most in fulfilling the needs of its swimmers. To this end I thank Paul for his acknowledgement of the differing needs of all you swimmers and moving to enable all you guys from when you can complete two lengths to when you are nationally ranked. You all have differing needs and differing programmes and as always it is more difficult to acknowledge the top end swimmers with providing them with programmes that they need and to this end thank you Brian Flanagan and Glen Morgan for taking over the top end swimmers who need that extra push, which under our present arrangements cannot be achieved. This is as at the top end swimmers need to be swimming at least one and a half hours per day and with our timeframe and workings in with the Aquatic centre at this time this cannot be achieved so I look forward to the results of the value added programme which is running over winter for our top end swimmers. In finishing I confirm that the AGM is being held on June 8 th when the club positions will be filled. I, Marg Crawford and Sue Glue will be standing down and therefore we will be taking nominations for Secretary and Treasurer. I again acknowledge the work of Marg and Sue that at the South Island Country and Town we acknowledged that of the earthquake ravaged swimming community and in recognition provided that all funds raised from the raffle and sale of whitebait sandwiches went to the Christchurch Earthquake fund. A G Whitcombe, Chairman HOKITIKA: I would like to first take the opportunity to thank all the current committee members and coaches who have worked very hard and given much time to provide and promote another successful year at the Hokitika Swimming Club. 13

Change is ahead for the club next season, with the loss of several key families to the club. I would like to take the time to thank them for their many years of service to our club. Demelsa Staton, President, who has been involved with the club for many years and has been responsible for organising fundraisers to help us pay the bills; John Willis, who was an active member of the committee, as both treasurer and meet secretary; Gina Schroder, who has been our secretary, a member of the BWCS committee and coach for the Elite squad. I should also mention myself, as you will know my roles at the club have been vast and varied. As both my children have decided not to pursue swimming as a competitive sport next season this has given me the opportunity to take some time out from swimming at the club level. However, I do still plan to remain involved in swimming as an official and look forward to seeing the next generation of swimmers coming through from the Hokitika Swimming Club. Although change is ahead, I feel very confident that the new families becoming involved with Hokitika Swimming Club will be more than capable of taking over the reins of the club. It is very important that the people who are actively involved at the time are the ones leading the way, making the changes and directing the club in the direction that best suits their needs and that of the Hokitika Swimming Club. I personally have had lots of input into the running of the club and been involved with many changes over the last nine years but it is now time for a new group, with fresh energy and ideas. Hokitika Swimming Club has already undergone some changes this year. Firstly, since the building of two new 25m pools on the West Coast, has meant that we no longer hold our carnival or the West Coast Champs at our Hokitika facility. Secondly, a decision was made by coaches to move away from our full pool booking from pm, a privilege that our club had enjoyed at the Hokitika Pool for many years. Understandably situations do change, along with volunteer s ability to help out at such rigid times. Two things have disappointed me this season that I feel I need to be mentioned. Firstly the lack of participation of swimmers at our club race nights has been very concerning. The club night gives the swimmers the opportunity to put in to practise all the skills coaches are teaching them, gain confidence for racing and encourage our young and new swimmers to have a go. Secondly, the lack of public reporting of the swimmers club night and meet results this season has been almost non existent. I feel very passionate about our swimmers having their achievements publicly acknowledged and personally spent many hours typing up results, from race meets and club nights to send them through to the paper. Results in the paper are a great Public Relation tool for our Club. When we are fundraising people are more likely to donate if they are aware of us and what our swimmers are achieving. Speaking of acknowledging our swimmers I would like to congratulate all the club swimmers both from the learn to swim section through to our competitive swimmers. We had an outstanding number of swimmers who qualified for SI Country and Town meet this year, 18 in total with 15 attending, and also six who qualified for the Canterbury WC Championships. Also congratulations to Kelsie Willis for qualifying for National Div II s this year. I would like to personally acknowledge all the parents who helped out at the SI Town and Country Meet and the West Coast Champs both held in Greymouth. It was a huge effort by all and the meets run very smoothly. I would also like to congratulate George Schroder on his outstanding swimming this season, he has now broken his first National Age Group Record and I am sure it will not be his last. As you will be aware, George changed to AquaGym club in February although he has continued to live and train in Hokitika this season. George will be moving to Christchurch at the end of the year to pursue his swimming and on behalf of the Hokitika swimming club I would like to extend our best wishes to him. He is a very talented, hardworking and dedicated swimmer and I am sure that he will work hard to achieve his goals. I am sure that many of us from Hokitika will be following his swimming career over the next few years. I would also like to personally thank all people who have coached my children over the last 9 years. What started out as an opportunity for my children to learn to swim for both personal safety and physical health and well being has also been a personal journey for me. I have learnt a lot about the sport of swimming and committee work and these experiences will no doubt be very useful for me in the future. Maria Petrovics-Edens, Vice President 14

JASI: 2010/11 has been a very interesting year for swimming; having had two major earthquakes in Christchurch placed the swimmers who were preparing for national meets under pressure, as pool space was at a premium. We had a number of our younger swimmers with no pool space for a couple of weeks however we had a number of people who worked together to arranged for the swimmers to go down to Ashburton to train and the other days they swam in Halswell. Although the year has had its challenges the club has some successes to share: we had a large number of our swimmers who qualified for national meets, where a number of finals were made as well as medals won; at the South Island champs last year, JASI walked away with a number of gold medals and record holders; Chan Min Park has been selected to attend a New Zealand Age Group camp which will be held in Dunedin over the next couple of months - well Done Chan Min; finally the club registrations grew from the previous year. Beckie Dooley and Jade Rogerson were both invited to attend fundraising event that were held in New Zealand for the Christchurch earthquakes. The Anzac fundraiser was held in Auckland, the event was put together by some senior New Zealand and Australian swimmers. The top NZ swimmers took part which includes Beckie Dooley, how swam against very best from Australia including Olympic and world gold medallists and world record holders. Jade Rodgerson went to Hamilton with a couple of other Canterbury swimmers, this time it was held by Te Kuiti club. It was a 24 hour swimathon and both events the money raised went to the earthquake appeal. The JASI swim meets were very successful this year and the one that stood out for me was the Christmas Cracker when everyone in the club got into the spirit of Christmas by wearing the Christmas hats. There was a great team atmosphere and would encourage the club to build on this. I d like to thank both Peter and Hayden for everything they have done for the club over the past 12 months and I look forward to the next 12 months. Well done to all the swimmers and good luck for next season. Lastly I d like to thank the committee for all their hard work and good luck for next year. Lauren Hamilton, President NORTH CANTERBURY: This year has been a very full year for the club. This is the first full season where the swim coaching has been provided through the Waimakariri Council s Wai Swim programme. Kaiapoi Swim Club and Dudley Park Amateur Swim Clubs merged and rebranded ourselves as North Canterbury Swim Club. The cub has performed with outstanding success locally regionally and nationally. We have been through two major Earthquakes that have affected the Christchurch and Waimakariri communities and therefore access to the facilities that we all use was greatly disrupted. Both the September and February earthquakes caused damage to the Kaiapoi Swimming pool. As yet we do not have a date for when the pool will be available for use. In September of 2010 Kaiapoi Swim Club merged with Dudley Park Amateur Swim Club and changed its name to North Canterbury Swim Club. This enabled the club to leverage sponsorship and really reflect where the club and its membership comes from. An immediate benefit was the gaining of sponsorship for the club from The Irrigation Warehouse for this year and for the next two years. As well as sponsorship from: Daniel Smith Industries, Avon City Ford and Abbot Insurance Brokers. The monies for this year s sponsorship went into subsidising the cost of our new uniforms. The amount of monies raised through Sponsorship, Grants and Fundraising has exceeded $20,000. The two earthquakes had a huge effect on the local community and we lost the use of Kaiapoi pool for a term after the September earthquake. The pool had only been up and running for a short time when the February earthquake hit and since then the Kaiapoi pool has been unavailable for use by the public or the club. 15

After the first earthquake it was good to see so many of the clubs swimmers mucking in and helping to clear silt from properties in the Kaiapoi area. Another positive has been the use of the clubrooms in Kaiapoi by the council as a library. The benefit to the club is that the council has refurbished the rooms. This has included rewiring, relining and painting of the interior, painting the exterior, the fitting of carpet, fitting of a heat pump and the refurbishment of the toilets. All of which will be returned to the club when the Council relocates the library to new a premises. The second earthquake in February also had an effect on the availability of pools in Christchurch with our only 50M pool now out of action for the next two to five years. This will mean a greater commitment to travel to away meets to get good competition. Due to council funds being reallocated the club has undertaken to fundraise to get starting blocks for the Dudley Aquatic Centre. This is vital for top class training but also to ensure schools are able to use the facility for school champs. The blocks should be in place in the coming year. We were fortunate that the lane availability for the club was maintained, all be it at Dudley with Kaiapoi out of action. The Wai Swim team and the club made room for some of the Christchurch clubs to provide training space in the lead up to National Age Group and Open Championships. I am sure that this extra competition in training also helped our swimmers get back in to some form of normality and help them to some excellent PB s at these two meets. As a club we performed well at local, regional and national competitions and the swimmers have represented their club and region with pride At South Island Country and Town the club finished 4 th, at Juniors 28 th,at National Age Groups 14 th and at Opens 14 th in the club points competition. This is also the first year that the club has attended the Australian Age Championships and with excellent results. The club has a National Champion in two events and both Natasha Lloyd and Brigitte Mahan have been selected in the New Zealand Swim Team for the Commonwealth Youth Games to be held in the Isle of Man in September of this year. I wish them both every success at these games. Special thanks must go to the Hayley Cockburn Trust for the $8000 grant to support local swimmers in North Canterbury. Hayley s 100M Breaststroke National Age Group Record, which stood for 15 years was broken by Natasha Lloyd at both the New Zealand Open and Australian Age Championships. It s great that this record is still held by a swimmer from North Canterbury. I d like to thank the committee for their hard work throughout the year, without their efforts the club wouldn t have achieved as much as it has. Thank you to those of you who are standing down, your time and efforts are much appreciated by us all. To the swimmers well done you can be proud of your efforts this season in some very trying conditions. To the parents that drop off, pick up and support their kids at training and the various competitions, Thank you! At the conclusion of the Open Championships the Swim New Zealand awards were held, with North Canterbury Swim Club winning Club of the Year. This was due to all of the hard work done by the committee, swimmers and club members. Quoting from the Club Application: What defined our club in 2010 is what our swimmers did in the earthquake. No matter what words are written it cannot describe the positive impact of their actions. Seeing swimmers knee deep in mud, shovel in hand, helping to remove contaminated silt from peoples houses incredible. Many of the people helped were old and frail and had no way of helping themselves. How can this club not go forward strongly with a group of swimmers like this? Chris Kershaw, President North Beach: not received QE11: Thanks to the continuing commitment of Glen Roly and Ellie QE11 swim club continued to grow during the 2011 season. Even two earthquakes and a coaching review could not put a dent in the commitment shown by both swimmers and coaches. This strength of character showed through in the achievements that swimmers obtained at all major swimming events. Our swimmers now hold numerous Canterbury and South Island records. 16
