4 Howick Pakuranga Swimming and Lifesaving Club Incorporated Presidents Report 2016 AGM This year is a very special year for HPK, as not only has the club continued to grow in size and be recognized as one of New Zealand s top Swimming Clubs, where some of our up and coming swimmers of New Zealand continue to call their club and train within the program, representing us both on the National and international stage of swimming. It s our 50 th Jubilee, this on its own is a great achievement and will be celebrated later in the year with past and present members, I look forward to seeing you all there. Our stated mission is: To promote, foster and encourage swimming and associated aquatic sports. Have we achieved this as a Club? I believe the answer is yes, but ultimately the Clubs members and swimmers will answer this through the achievements that they have attained through the past year. The last year has been an eventful 12 months for the Club both in the water and out. Swimmers have trained hard, raced fast, achieved PBs, won medals and many have reached their goals. Coaches have supported the swimmers under their stewardship. The Club, via the efforts of the swimmers, remains one of the top swim Clubs in New Zealand. Swimgym continues to perform well and has expanded in line with our strategic plan. We have after 10 years of planning negotiating and fundraising managed to achieve more pool space for the squads, All in all, a year that everyone can be proud of. Some of the year s achievements where the swimmers and coaches have represented us internationally and nationally are: Corey Main qualifying for the 2016 Rio Olympics World Champs 2015 ( Horst coach, Tracey Keith-Machitt & Corey Main representatives) Fina World Cup Tokyo- Jana, Daniel Hunter & Ewan Jackson World University Games- Daniel Hunter 2015 Commonwealth Youth Games- Mario Koenigsperger 2016 Oceania Champs Mario Koenigsperger, Bobbi Gichard, Daniel Hunter, Bayley Main 2016 Junior Pan Pacific Champs- Bobbi Gichard Opens team ( 2nd overall) 25 records broken by HPK swimmers 2 swimmers Carded for the elite junior relay team one, NZ team Juniors Nationals managed to retain top club spot for second year running Aims Secondary schools NZ Age Groups Results 3 rd overall 4 swimmers Selected for Oceania Championships 2 x swimmers selected for Olympic games Horst appointment to SNZ Appointment panel( July) Jana selected coach for worlds Accomplishments outside of the pool include: The good news that Janna and Boris will welcome a baby daughter later this year The long awaited heating of Howick Intermediate School pool These are only some of the achievements from the past year. Achievements come in many forms and are personal to each individual swimmer. Every swimmer in our Club is a success. We are determined to give all swimmers an opportunity to reach their goals whether it is a gold medal, selection to a team, compete in a swim meet or achieve a PB. Everyone is important and must be encouraged to do their very best and to enjoy the experience. This is why the Club exists. We should all be proud to be part of a highly successful sports Club that offers opportunities and training programmes for swimmers of all abilities. We will continue to strive for excellence, in an environment which allows athletes to achieve their goals. 3
5 To do this though, we need your help, as success does not come about by chance, it requires great commitment by the athletes, but even that will not necessarily give you the result you seek without the support and efforts of all those people behind the scenes, supporting the swimmers on a daily basis, starting with parents, families, and including our fantastic coaches, & training teams. However, in order to get the results athletes require the swim meets to compete at. Changes by Swimming New Zealand have meant that for the times from any swim meet to be considered official the meet must have been overseen by a minimum number of qualified registered officials; Timekeepers, Inspector of Turns, Starters, Judge of Stroke, Referees. Please consider becoming an active participant in your child s chosen sport and become a volunteer official at swim meets, if you are currently a qualified time keeper consider up-skilling to become an Inspector of Turns, Starter, Judge of Stroke, or Referee, without all these hardworking volunteers your child would not be able to compete and achieve their goals. Whatever you might want to do, please get involved both in race meets and the business side, like joining the committee, because the strength and success of HPK depends as much on you the family of the swimmers as the swimmers themselves. A lot has been achieved this year, both in and out of the pool, this is due in part by the hard work and dedication of many people behind the scenes who have helped make HPK the great Club with a bright future that we see today. I would like to take this opportunity to thank some of these people: 1. Vicki Ashley our Club Administrator. Your efforts are hugely appreciated. You are always there to support the Club, the swimmers and parents. 2. The committee executive Marion Gibson, Mandy Spencer and Vicki as well as the extra support from Daryl Green and Trevor Yates. 3. The remainder of the committee: Jeff Waqanivavalagi, Ray Kahukiwa, Heather Comer, Robin Crowe 4. Annmaree Talbot, for her continued support with the Clubs financial management. 5. Horst Miehe Horst continues to shoulder extra responsibility with the successes this year 6. Bruce Talbot for providing and supporting the Club website this site continues to be a library of important and relevant information that many other clubs are using as a guide to produce their own sites. 7. Susan Yates, for your support at Club nights and many other activities. 8. The coaches and land based trainers, on behalf of the committee, parents and swimmers, thank you for your efforts over the last 12 months. 9. To Peter Ashley and Honda for your long term support of the Club, it really does help our swimmers to power their dreams. 10. Squad managers, meet managers, those parents who have travelled with teams, timekeepers, IOTs, starters etc thank you. The Club cannot function without your input. This year we have achieved a major milestone, in being able to get the Howick Intermediate pool up and running, giving swimmers the extra training space, with this however, has come many challenges as the pool has required a lot of extra work and repairs to get it to a state in which it can be used effectively, this has placed an extra strain on our resources. Thank you for all the fundraising that you have been involved in and are about to undertake so that we can continue to provide the extra pool space for our swimmers so they can continue to do their very best and achieve their personal goals. 7 Mangere Swimming Club Presidents Report This year the Club has been through a whirlwind of change, but undoubtedly with the support of some key members, the club continues to move forward. At the beginning of the year we had 6 senior swimmers attend National events at one time, Jaydon and Ursula Heremaia, Noah Vilisoni Heather, Jaeda Fretton, Mikayla Brown Antonovich and Jem Nimmo. Also Nathan Fretton qualifying for NZ Juniors who at the time was unable to attend. Each of these swimmers did amazingly well some managing to medal on the podium and those who managed to make the top 10 times in the country in their respective events. Thirteen senior swimmers were lucky enough to go on a training camp in Tauranga. Each of them thoroughly enjoyed themselves but soon learnt the importance of good eating and a lot of rest. The idea of the camp was give the swimmers an idea of what they could expect when attending National Meets. Just recently our junior and intermediate swimmers attended a weekend training camp staying weekend at the local scout hall in Mangere Bridge. The kids had a couple of training sessions each day and then back to the hall for some eating, team bonding and games. The camp was a huge hit for our younger swimmers and it was a great to have our newer members participate as well. The committee would like to thank Melanie McFarlane and her helpers Elena Fa amoe Timoteo and Claudia Koroheke for organising and keeping our kids well fed throughout the entire weekend. Thanks should also go to those parents who helped with transporting our kids to and from the pool. This year will be my last year on the Committee as President and through all the ups and downs I can honestly say I have enjoyed every moment of it. The role has been a challenging one having to deal with different people and problems along the way but our committee has endured each one and managed to keep the club afloat on each occasion. It has been a pleasure working with the committee and coaches over the years. I would like to say thank you to those members and counties executives who have given me so much support throughout my role as president. I hope the club continues to grow and strive in the coming years. Thank you Mere Cooper 6

9 PRESIDENT S REPORT It gives me great pleasure in submitting my President s report for the swimming year. There are so many people to thank for their support and all the hard work they have provided throughout the year to keep the Club viable and an enjoyable environment. To start, I would like to thank the Committee for all their time and commitment to ensure the Club continues into the future. This year has had some very challenging moments which I believe by working as a team we have overcome. A special thanks to Angelia Chua, Tracy Nicholls and Tereii Ahevelo for carrying out the key roles for the Club and all the additional work they have completed during the year. Thanks goes out to our volunteer coaches; Vinsend Arudas for his continued services and Danielle Laulu and Tepea Wilson for stepping up to help coach the intermediates. I d like to welcome Brian Sorensen back as Head Coach, I m sure all our swimmers will continue to grow under his coaching. Also to all our parents who became qualified timekeepers and IOT s. I would also like to thank Sandra, Jeannie and Geoff (Counties Manukau Swimming Association) for their continued support of the Club, Susan Arudas for helping with the accounts and Bianca and Mike for all the support they give at the National Meets and for hosting our Russian visitor. I should also mention Chester Grey Accountants for their continued sponsorship of our meets and Infinity for the two grants we have received for help with the Head Coach s remuneration and swimming equipment. And last but not least, to all our parents/grandparents/caregivers and swimmers for putting in the hardwork throughout the year that it takes to become a swimmer. It takes a special person to put in all the hours that a swimmer needs to become competitive and we have some very special people. This includes our parents/ grandparents/caregivers who support the swimmers in being a taxi driver, a bank, a timekeeper/iot and an enthusiastic supporter. I am hoping this year we will see all our junior and intermediate swimmers becoming competitive. I m looking forward to an exciting and successful swimming year. During the year our swimmers have had some great results. Our teams in the Counties Leagues came 2 nd and 9 th out of 10 in the Counties League and 5 th out of 12 in the Dolphin League. I would like to congratulate all our National qualifiers. It was great to see so many qualify: NZ Junior qualifiers: Quintin Wong, Bronson Chungson, Saul Wilson, Tiaare Ahovelo, Hannah Iosefa. Division II qualifiers: Danielle Laulu, Montana Wilson. Division I qualifiers: Jasmine Chan, Connor Stewart, Taiawa Kotlowski, Eugene Chua, Victor Chua. Opens qualifiers: Connor Stewart, Taiawa Kotlowski I m sure we will see these numbers grow this year. We have a lot of potential coming through the ranks.
