4 S E A S O N O U T L O O K Mary Patrek Valerie Tukey Terry Nieszner and Kelly Kremer STEP IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION The University of Minnesota women s swimming and diving team embarks on its second season with co-head coaches Kelly Kremer and Terry Nieszner at the helm. With a star-studded freshmen class and a quality finish at the Big Ten Championships in their first year, the coaches look for this year to be a constant step forward in the building of their regime. Last year was a starting point for us. I felt good about where we placed as a team because I don t think that we could have finished better than the teams in front of us, Kremer said. I hope we are better this year. We d like to move up in the Big Ten rankings, whether that s fifth, fourth, I just want us to be better. I d like to take some positive steps forward this year. I think we want to increase our sense of pride within our team and earn respect within the Big Ten and at NCAAs, Nieszner added. We hope that other schools say that Minnesota is a team to be reckoned with and that is a team that you want to be a part of. NEWCOMERS Minnesota welcomes one of its best freshmen classes in recent history this year. The Golden Gophers have 15 freshmen on the roster. Of the 15, four were 2005 summer national qualifiers in Christine Jennings (Longmont, Colo.), Yuen Kobayashi (Osaka, Japan), Meredith McCarthy (The Woodlands, Texas) and Kait Strickland (North Berwick, Maine). The Gophers also kept their home-state swimmers in the area with Minnesota state champions Stephanie Gross (Sauk Rapids, Minn), Stacy Busack (Fergus Falls, Minn.), Erica Schiffler (Woodbury, Minn.) and Jenny Shaughnessy (Rochester, Minn). Also adding depth to Minnesota s roster will be Linzey Bachmeier (Mandan, N.D.), Katie Brosseau (Rogersville, Mo.), Jenna Gamble (Tucson, Ariz.), Erin Holtmeyer (Omaha, Neb.), Brianna Hubbard (Stacy, Minn.), Danielle Ridder (Ballwin, Mo.) and Andrea Rosenberg (Grafton, Wis.). We have a great class of freshmen coming in to swim for us, Kremer said. There s just a number of our freshmen that can make such an immediate impact this year for us. A majority of them have big meet experience and can help us on relays at the conference level and individually can make it to the NCAA s. SENIOR CLASS The Gophers have a strong group of talented freshmen, but the coaches want make sure that in order for their team to be successful takes strong leadership. That leadership will be looked upon from the Gophers 10 seniors. Heading up the senior class are captains Bridget McCoy and Sarah Perrott. McCoy, a breaststroker, and Perrott, a sprint freestyler, will especially be looked upon to lead this young group. Along with McCoy and Perrott, the Gophers will also look to Kate Hardt, Cecile Lamour, Katherine Marshall, Mary Patrek, Katie Proell, Abby Ruess, Jennifer Warmington and Katie Wind to mold the team into a strong force within the conference and nationally. We ll need that leadership with our big freshman class that we have swimming this year, Nieszner said. We have a new group of talented freshmen, but we need our seniors to help this group move forward and lay the ground work for them. They have been through a lot of change here and have dealt with that change well. They are a great group of people and we feel confident that they can help us improve this program. SPRINT FREE Although the Gophers lost Katy Coombe, who holds the school record in the 50-yard freestyle, to graduation, they return three of their top five swimmers this year. Leading the pack is senior captain Sarah Perrott. In her junior campaign, Perrott clocked a time of and participated in the free relays at the Big Ten Championships. She finished second on the team with 112 dual meet points. Perrott was a member of the Gophers recordholding 200 free relay team in Also returning is Jennifer Hasling, who will compete in both the 50 free and the backstroke events. Krista Kezbers also returns for the Gophers after finishing with the fourth-fastest time in the 50 free. Kezbers competed at the Big Ten Championships and finished the season with a time of in the event. The Gophers also add freshmen freestylers Erin Holtmeyer, Meredith McCarthy, and Stacy Busack to the mix. Holtmeyer was a four-time state champion and a U.S. National qualifier in the 50 free. McCarthy was a national qualifier in the 100 free. She finished second in the 100 free and was a member of the champion 800 free relay at the 2004 Junior Nationals. Busack is the state recordholder in the 50 free and won the state championship in 2003 and I think our sprint freestyle may be stronger than it was last year, Kremer said. Sarah is one of our captains and is the leader in our sprints. Jenny Hasling is back and is a year better. We ll be very strong in the sprint free. Krista Kezbers MIDDLE DISTANCE AND DISTANCE FREE The Gophers strongest events are their freestyles, including the middle distance and distance frees. With the the likes of the returning swimmers and the incoming freshmen joining the mix, the Gophers will excel in the stroke. The Gophers return two versatile swimmers in Kate Hardt and Valerie Tukey. Hardt finished the season as the team s most valuable swimmer. She led the team in dual meet points with 211 and is the Gophers top returning point scorer at the Big Ten Championships a year ago with 35 points. She held the Gophers fastest times in the 200 free (1:48.38) and the 500 free (4:49.39) and the second fastest in the 1,000 (10:06.54) and the 1,650 free (17:08.10). Tukey led the Gophers in the 1,000 free and the 1,650 free with times of 10:04.67 and 16: Tukey finished the season with CSCAA Academic All-America honorable mention honors, her first accolade. Kelly and I know that we need Kate and Val to be leaders in the free events, Nieszner said. They ll be competitive in the middle distance group throughout the season and in the dual meets. Along with Hardt and Tukey, the Gophers will also look to returners Jennifer Chang, Amy Killpatrick, Sharon Leary, Erin O Neil and Jennifer Warmington to help the Gophers score points this season. Minnesota adds seven newcomers that will make an immediate impact to the free events. Yuen Kobayashi finished sixth at the 2004 Olympic Trials in the 200-meter free and competed with Mission Viejo this past summer. She participated in the 200-meter free and the 400 free at summer nationals. Christine Jennings was a U.S. national qualifier in the 200, 400, 800, 1500 free events. She placed 25th at the 2004 Olympic Trials in the 400 free. Also competing in the middle distance free events will be freshmen Meredith McCarthy. In her senior year, McCarthy won the Texas state championship in the 100 free. Also adding depth to the freestyle events will be Katie Brosseau, Jenna Gamble, Jenny Shaughnessy and sophomore transfer Morgan Sonstegard. Gamble will be used in the distance free events, while Brosseau and Sonstegard will compete in the individual medley. Shaughnessy will compete in the free, the butterfly and the IM. Last year when we went into a Big Ten meet and if one of our four freestylers weren t performing well, we were in trouble because we didn t have the depth, Kremer said. This year we ll probably have five or six people contending for the four spots. We are much deeper and stronger in these events than a year ago. This will raise the level of performance for everyone and gives us the opportunity to be more competitive both individually and with our relay teams. 2

5 S E A S O N O U T L O O K Katie Wind Bridget McCoy Kate Hardt BACKSTROKE The Golden Gophers return a strong backstroker in senior Katie Wind. In her junior campaign, Wind led the backstrokers with a time of in the 100 back and 1:59.72 in the 200 back. Wind set a lifetime best time of 2:17.51 at the 2005 ConocoPhillips Summer National Championships in Irvine, Calif. Wind's preliminary time was good enough to qualify for the 2008 Olympic Trials. She s a different swimmer now then she was four months ago, Kremer said. In swimming, you can go to best times or go to another level all together and she did that for us in August. She s not just going to be a leader in the backstroke events, but she s a leader by example for the others because of her work ethic. Also returning for the Maroon and Gold is Jennifer Hasling. In her sophomore season, Hasling competed in the 100 back and posted the team s second-best time of Hasling was a CSCAA Academic All-American honorable mention. Jaclyn Gazvoda will also compete in the back events, clocking the team s third-best time in the 200 in 2: Erin O Neil and Emma Sinkler return for their second seasons with the Gophers. The Gophers add one freshmen to the backstroke event in Stephanie Gross. Gross was the Minnesota state 100 backstroke champion in 2004 and held six school records and four section records with Cathedral High School. Jackie made our Big Ten team for the first time as a sophomore, Nieszner said. Emma put in a great summer of training and I think that will show in the short course season. BREASTSTROKE Like last year, one of Minnesota s deepest strokes is the breaststroke. The Gophers return six swimmers in the 100 and 200 events. The Minnesota coaches feel that the best is yet to come from this group. Leading the pack is senior captain Bridget McCoy. Last year, McCoy held the team s best time in the 100 (1:03.58) and the second-best time in the 200 (2:17.49). She led the breaststrokers in dual meet points (100) and the Big Ten Championships (30.5). McCoy was also an CSCAA Academic All- American honorable mention. Also returning are seniors Katherine Marshall, Mary Patrek, Katie Proell and Abby Ruess. The group of seniors combined for 90 points in dual meet action and two earned points at the Big Ten Championships. Also returning for the Gophers is junior Erika Bjorklund. In her sophomore season, Bjorklund competed in her second Big Ten Championship and earned 27 points in the regular season. The Gophers add transfer Jamie Howard and one freshmen in Andrea Rosenberg. Rosenberg held the high school record in the 100 breaststroke and was the Speedo sectional qualifer. We have a great group of breaststrokers, Kremer said. We have a nice balance of sprint and 200 breaststrokers. They push each other in practice, support one another, and have goals of being one of the top breaststroke groups in the Big Ten this year. INDIVIDUAL MEDLEY Minnesota will have a variety of swimmers that will compete in the individual medley this season with eight listed on the roster. The Gophers leader from the season was Kate Hardt. Last year, Hardt held the team s fastest time in both the 200 and 400 individual medley. Abby Ruess held the team s second-fastest time in each event, clocking 2:05.37 and 4:28.92, respectively. Erika Bjorklund returns for her second year in the event. Minnesota will have a few new faces in the IM this season. Jamie Howard, who did not compete last year, will race in the event this season. Freshmen Danielle Ridder, Kait Strickland, Katie Brosseau and Jenny Shaughnessy will be looked upon to make an immediate impact in the IM events. Ridder was a junior National qualifier in the 400 IM as well as a sectional qualifier. Strickland competed in the 400 IM at the 2005 and 2004 national championships, finishing as high as 24th overall. BUTTERFLY The Gophers lost a few key seniors from last year, but Minnesota hopes to fill the void this year with the returners as well as adding a few freshmen to the equation. One of the most versatile swimmers on the team returns for her sophomore season in Erin O Neil. As a freshmen, O Neil clocked the second-fastest times in both the 100 and 200 fly. Lindsey St. Martin returns for her third year as a Golden Gopher. Last year, St. Martin held the team s third-fastest time in the fly events as well as swimming the freestyle strokes. Like St. Martin, Krista Kezbers will swim both the fly and free events. Jamie Howard will also look to contribute in the fly this year. Lindsey St. Martin will be back and can certainly be the leader of the group, Nieszner said. Krista Kezbers is swimming well in the 100 fly and we hope that she can step up this season. The Gophers will add freshmen Linzey Bachmeier, Danielle Ridder, Jenny Shaughnessy and Kait Strickland. Kremer and Nieszner feel that some of the freshmen will really step up in the fly events and be able to contribute points. Although I think Jenny can have an impact in whatever she swims, I think she ll have a major impact in the fly events, Kremer said. Her sprint fly is great and is certainly capable of swimming a 200. DIVING If Minnesota diving looks a little different this year, it s because it is. Jason Baumann takes over the role as the diving coach after holding an assistant coach role at Indiana. With only three divers on the women s team, Baumann will take this year to take small steps, but hopes to make great strides in the end. I m really looking forward to this year, Baumann said. I m excited to be here. If we work together, we can accomplish great things. We look toward this year as a transition year. It s going to take time, but I think by the time we get around to our conference season we can be prepared to do very well. Minnesota s lone returner is junior Holly Jakits. In her sophomore season, Jakits was a Big Ten finalist in the platform, finishing sixth overall. Baumann thinks she ll have a good year and do well by the end of the year. The Gophers have two freshmen that will gain experience in just their first season. Brianna Hubbard was a Minnesota State finalist and a member of the Twin Cities Divers. She was also a three-time Junior West National qualifier. Erica Schiffler was named an All-American in 2002 and Schiffler was a member of the Twin City Divers and went to Junior Nationals three years. Erica is going to be a fantastic diver for us, Baumann said. She s very capable, talented and qualified to compete at this level. I m looking forward to work with Brianna. I think that she has a lot of athletic potential and good athletes will do very well in this sport because it takes a lot of ability. 34 Robert H. Bruininks was appointed the 15th president of the University of Minnesota on Nov. 8, He has served the University for 38 years, previously as professor, dean, and executive vice president and provost. Positioning for the future Bruininks is managing a major strategic positioning effort aimed at making the University one of the top three public research universities in the world within a decade. In many ways, we are already a leading research university, but the rapidly changing world of higher education requires that we not rest on our laurels and instead anticipate future needs and opportunities for education and research, Bruininks said. If we do not become more intentional about priorities and directions, our ability to serve our students and Minnesota will suffer. Bruininks vision for the University includes continued improvements to the student experience, building on recent successes such as special programming for first-year students, new and newly renovated residence halls and classrooms, improved academic counseling, and streamlined registration and financial aid processes. These innovations have helped fuel increased student satisfaction rates, increased numbers of applicants for admissions and enrollment, and significantly improved graduation rates. With more than 50,000 students enrolled in , the University of Minnesota Twin Cities is the second largest campus in the nation. To maintain that level of access for students there and at the University s three coordinate campuses, Bruininks has made funding for scholarships his No. 1 private fundraising priority. That includes a major new scholarship program for low income students called the Founders Opportunity Scholarship. Students at the University have unparalleled opportunities from which to choose among, from laboratories on the cutting edge of science to study abroad experiences to the chance to serve their communities through service learning. I want to be sure they re able to choose the University of Minnesota, he said. About President Bruininks Initially joining the University s faculty as an assistant professor of educational psychology, Bruininks s career has centered on accountability, policy research and development, and strategic improvement in the fields of prekindergarten to grade 12 and higher education. As a researcher, he has authored or coauthored nearly 90 journal articles and more than 70 book chapters, as well as training materials and several nationally standardized tests. Throughout his tenure at the University, he has founded and co-founded centers including the National Center on Educational Outcomes, the Rehabilitation Research and Training Center on Community Living, and the Institute on Community Integration. Bruininks has been honored with numerous awards, including a Kellogg Foundation National Leadership Fellowship. He is president emeritus of the American Association on Mental Retardation, serves on the J. This past year, Maturi was instrumental in getting Gopher football one step closer to returning to campus when Twin Cities Federal (TCF) agreed to a $35 million corporate sponsorship, the largest corporate sponsorship of its kind involving college football. Gopher athletics is a window to our great university and we are fortunate that TCF realized the importance of what we are trying to accomplish, Maturi said. Bringing football Saturday s back to campus will not only reward our football program, but the students, alumni, fans and anyone else associated with the event. Maturi has led a department that has produced 412 Big Ten All-Academic selections the past two years, the highest two-year total in the history of athletics at Minnesota. Over 50 percent of Gopher student-athletes maintain a grade point average of 3.0 or higher. Since Maturi s arrival, more than 20 Gopher student-athletes have earned Academic All-America honors. During the academic year, the Gophers climbed to sixth-place in the NACDA Director s Cup standings following the winter sports season, the highest ranking ever for Minnesota in the competition. The Director s Cup recognizes overall athletic excellence by awarding points for NCAA competition in 10 men s and 10 women s sports. Eight Gopher teams advanced to NCAA post-season competition; with six teams ending the year with top 20 national finishes. Among the highlights from the past year was the football program s accomplishment of earning its third consecutive bowl win for the first time in school history with a victory over Alabama in the Music City Bowl. The Gopher women s hockey team won its second consecutive NCAA championship by defeating Harvard, 4-3, while the men s hockey team reached its third NCAA Frozen Four in the past four seasons. The Gopher women s volleyball team advanced to its second consecutive Final Four and reached the national championship game for the first time in school history. After a six-year absence from the NCAA Tournament, the men s basketball team returned to the NCAA tournament, while the women s basketball team reached its third consecutive Sweet 16. Two other Gopher teams finished the season in the top 20 with men s swimming & diving earning an 11th-place finish and men s cross country had an 18th-place showing at the NCAA Championships. Everyone associated with Golden Gopher athletics should be proud of our accomplishments this past year, Maturi said. The student-athletes, coaches, campus community and people of Minnesota all had a hand in our success. It is a credit to the quality student-athletes we have at Minnesota when you are able to combine academic accomplishments with athletic success. Maturi increased his leadership role within the Big Ten and NCAA during the past couple of years by being named to several prominent committees, most notably the NCAA Division I Management Council. He will serve as the Management Council s liaison to the NCAA Division I Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. Maturi is also a member of the NCAA Division I Men s Ice Hockey Committee. Maturi was named the Director of Athletics at the U of M on July 12, The University s Board of Regents unanimously voted to name him the first Athletics Director of a combined athletics department. Maturi, a native of Chisholm, Minn., came to the U of M from Miami University (Ohio). He was the Director of Athletics at Miami since At Miami, Maturi was responsible for the management and leadership of 19 sports programs; all support staffs and nearly 600 student-athletes. The synchronized skating team won a national championship, the men s basketball team reached the NCAA Sweet 16, the volleyball team earned its first NCAA Tournament win, the men s cross country team advanced to the NCAA meet and the football team won 10 games against an impressive schedule. That year, six teams won Mid-American Conference titles while five coaches garnered Coach of the Year honors. The men s program captured the school s 20th Reese Trophy, an award that measures overall success of men s teams in the MAC. During his tenure at Miami, Maturi spearheaded fund-raising efforts for two important and necessary projects. In his final year, the Walter L. Gross Jr. Family Student-Athlete Development Center was opened and a new baseball field, McKie Field at Hayden Park, was dedicated. Prior to Miami, Maturi served as the Director of Athletics at the University of Denver from At Denver, Maturi led the school s move from Division II to Division I and oversaw the search for Division I conference affiliation. Maturi also assisted in the planning and the development of a $50 million Sports and Wellness Center and a $2.1 million tennis complex. Maturi is no stranger to the Big Ten. 36 C O A C H I N G S T A F F TERRY NIESZNER CO-HEAD COACH SECOND SEASON Last year, the University of Minnesota set out to create something that had never been done in Minnesota women s swimming. Terry Nieszner and Kelly Kremer joined together and became co-head coaches. With the knowledge and experience of Nieszner as a long-time assistant from the women's program and Kremer, an associate from the men's program, the Maroon and Gold hoped that it would form into the perfect tandem. And it did. In just their first year at the helm of Minnesota swimming, Nieszner and Kremer s team ranked in the top 25 of the College Swimming Coaches Association of America. After an impressive performance at the Georgia Invite, the Gophers entered the poll at No. 24. Minnesota was ranked as high as No. 23 following the Quad Duals against Big Ten opponents Wisconsin, Illinois and Purdue. The Gophers finished sixth at the Big Ten Championships, a higher finish then predicted. Minnesota finished the season with a 7-1 dual meet record and a 5-1 mark in Big Ten action. Not only did the Gophers improve in the pool, but also landed one of the best recruiting classes in the nation. Nieszner and Kremer recruited four summer national qualifiers (Christine Jennings, Yuen Kobayashi, Meredith McCarthy and Kait Strickland) as well as keeping Minnesota swimmers in state (Stephanie Gross, Stacy Busack and Jenny Shaughnessy). After serving as the women's swimming assistant coach for 27 years, Nieszner was named the interim head coach immediately following former head coach Jean Freeman's retirement. Nieszner worked closely with Freeman for nearly three decades, and their coaching philosophies, styles and skills complemented one another very well. Nieszner is a well-known and highly respected member of the swimming community. During Nieszner's tenure as an assistant, Minnesota won back-to-back Big Ten Championships in 1999 and 2000, and she coached 48 student-athletes to Big Ten titles in 53 individual events and 23 relay events. Since the start of Nieszner's coaching career, the Minnesota women's swimming and diving program has had 58 swimmers earn over 200 All-America certificates and have placed in the NCAA Championships 17 of the last 18 years. Nieszner guided some of the greatest swimmers, not only in the Big Ten, but in the nation. In her 27 years, Nieszner coached six-time All-American Diane Wallner, 12-time All-American and American record holder Gretchen Hegener and 10-time All-American Terri Jashinsky. Since the start of Nieszner's career, five student-athletes have earned the Big Ten Medal of Honor award, while seven were named the Women's Athletics Senior Athlete of the Year. Minnesota also excelled in the classroom, earning two GTE/CoSIDA Academic All-Americans in Uta Herrmann and Dana Baum. The Gophers have had over 100 Academic All-Big Ten honorees, since the award was initiated in A former Gopher swimmer, Nieszner was the first woman to earn All-America honors at the University of Minnesota. As a student-athlete, Nieszner was a fourtime All-American (1974, twice in 1975, 1976) and a twotime Big Ten champion (1974, 1977). She was inducted into the Minnesota Aquatics Hall of Fame in 1984, the M Club Hall of Fame in 1990 and the Minnesota Swimming Coaches Association Hall of Fame in She graduated in 1977 with a degree in physical education. Nieszner, her husband, Tom, and sons Joe and Pat, reside in St. Paul, Minn. I think Kelly and I compliment each other well. We both have different ways of coaching, but it s good to get different perspectives. Kelly brings a certain strength and I think I bring a balance that you sometimes need. By being named co-head coaches, we doubled our strengths. We were both very strong in our positions and successful, which is another asset to the program. 41 D O R O T H Y L. S H E P P A R D D orothy Lestina Sheppard, a longtime swimming activist, philanthropist and Minnesota women s swimming and diving supporter, made the largest private contribution to the former women s athletics department at the University of Minnesota. She established the Dorothy L. Sheppard Athletic Swimming and Diving Scholarship, which funded 15 scholarships for female student-athletes in addition to providing for team training trips, facility projects and regularly hosting the NCAA Division I Swimming and Diving Championships. In 1987, when the University was seeking to build a new aquatic center on campus, Sheppard gave a gift of $250,000, the only private money obtained for the project. When the facility was dedicated in 1990, Sheppard took to the water in her 1920s wool suit for an inaugural swim. She died on Sept. 26, 1993, her 87th birthday. On Oct. 18, 1997, the University Aquatic Center pool was named the Dorothy L. Sheppard Pool. Sheppard, a charming and energetic woman, stayed active in swimming her entire life. Swimming is the finest individual sport because you can stick with it, she said in I can swim a half a mile easier than I can walk a couple of blocks. A St. Paul native and graduate of Central High School, Sheppard attended the University of Minnesota, where she earned an M letter sweater by gathering 1,000 points from competing on 10 different athletic teams. She participated in field hockey, soccer, ice hockey, tennis, fencing, tumbling, softball and archery. However, swimming, where she concentrated on the backstroke and freestyle, Dorothy Sheppard (right) with Jean Freeman during one of Dorothy s many visits to the University Aquatic Center construction site. was her favorite sport. Sheppard was an inaugural inductee to the University of Minnesota Women s Athletics Hall of Fame in 1985, was inducted into the Gopher Aquatics Hall of Fame in 1986, and served on the Women s Athletics Advisory Council. While at the U, Sheppard served as president of the Aquatic League in 1927, as a member of the Women s Athletic Association (W.A.A.) Board from , and as captain of the field hockey team. Upon graduating from the College of Education in 1929, Sheppard taught competitive and synchronized swimming from in Two Rivers, Wis. Sheppard resigned her teaching position and moved back to St. Paul. In 1953, under her supervision, an outdoor pool was constructed at her Beechwood home. Ten different construction companies built the 20 x 40 pool by hand with a filtration system designed by the University. Sheppard then taught all the neighborhood children how to swim and was proud of their success aquatically and personally. In addition to her love for swimming, Sheppard found time to serve on the Altar Guild for St. Clement s Church and on the Girl Scout board. She was active in the League of Women Voters. Sheppard later moved to a condominium (with an indoor swimming pool) along the Mississippi river in St. Paul. From her balcony, Sheppard quickly befriended the riverboat captains on her marine radio; her handle was Mermaid. Dorothy had a ship-to-shore radio and followed the river traffic. Below the bluff in Lilydale on the Sunday afternoon of Dorothy s passing, the Josiah Snelling riverboat stopped in midstream of the Mississippi and gave a rare full-trumpet salute. Captain Bowles announced to passengers, Dorothy Sheppard was a friend of all riverboat crews. But even more, she was a friend to all of good faith. Sheppard loved to be around young people, particularly the University women s swimming team. She traveled with the team on its annual training trip and attended several Big Ten meets. Sheppard charmed a national audience at the participants banquet of the 1993 NCAA Division I Women s Swimming and Diving Championships, for which Sheppard was the honorary chair. In a 1983 interview, Sheppard maintained she was born 50 years too soon for women s athletics. Her philosophy of life was simple: The more you can do for other people, the better.
