1 Streamline OCTOBER 2015 News from the Chairman... What a start to the 2015/2016 season! Since becoming the HSSC Club Chairman in June, I have been astonished by the level of activity shown by all. Our committee members are very busy preparing for the season, the Awards night, and making sure we, as a Club, are doing all we can for our swimmers. Parents are getting involved like we ve never seen before (thank you for your help remember we ll need you all for the Santa Sprints). Coaches, teachers and judges are going through their respective certifications at a lightning speed. More importantly, swimmers are clocking PBs faster than Usain Bolt. I would also like to highlight the recent Pre-season Meet we organised in September. What an event! I never imagined so many people would turn up, parents and swimmers alike. The feedback was fantastic and I believe we all learned something that day. This is what it should all be about working together, listening to each other and taking actions to move the Club forward. Already we are making changes to answer your feedback and suggestions the County Squad will soon have more pool time, the same applies for the Masters Squad. We are pushing on with land-based training and Yoga. We will do more around nutrition. We will organise more social events for parents and swimmers (not always at the same time). We will move swimmers up the ladder (but also down) more regularly. We will also enable parents to become volunteers be that as Judges, Coaches or in whatever capacity they can offer. For me, this pre-season event was a clear winner it showed to everyone (swimmers, parents, coaches and committee members) that there are tons of volunteers willing to make HSSC the best possible club for our swimmers. But to make this really work, I would ask you to share your feedback, concerns and suggestions to the Head Coach, your Coach, Committee Members or myself. Nothing is impossible and if you think there are areas we need to improve, trust me, we will strive to improve them! Finally, I would like to congratulate all of our swimmers (the young ones and the not so young!) for their recent achievements. They did fantastically well at Littlehampton, Lis Hartley, Rushmore Royals, Eastbourne and during the first round off the Arena League competition. I would also like to give a special high five to Leah Williams, Lauren Alff and my son Louis Choron, for their Sussex selection. 3 HSSC swimmers at Ponds Forge was a fantastic sight. Let s keep going this is going to be a tough and long season, but I am confident we can smash it! Olivier Choron Chairman TEAM MANAGER S REPORT NATIONAL INTER-COUNTY SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIPS Congratulations to Louis Choron, Leah Williams and Lauren Alff who were selected to represent Sussex in Sheffield.

2 They all did very well, clocked some amazing PBs and help Sussex finish 12th in their division. ARENA LEAGUE! ROUND 1 Saturday 10th October 2015, Canterbury. We finished 2nd...an amazing result!! ROUND 2 14th November 2015, Summerfields. Let s smash this one again. ROUND 3 12th December 2015 All Squad members are expected to keep these dates free in anticipation of selection. The team for Round Two will be confirmed soon, so please keep an eye on the Facebook page and noticeboards for updates and information.please remember that all swimmers are to wear club kit to league events.it s going to be a tough year, but we must pull together and do our best let s Go! Go! Go! MOBILISING & STRETCHING- This is essential for injury prevention. If you need any help in remembering the stretches, please just ask we have laminated reminder cards for all to use. Please make sure you arrive to training and competitions in time to complete the full regime and allow enough time afterwards to stretch off fully (15 mins). It is helpful if parents also remember this is part of the training session, so please don t heckle your swimmer if they are later off poolside than you hoped, be proud that they have done a good job and are taking care of themselves. CYBER BULLYING- I have been made aware of several incidences where some unacceptable comments have been shared on Snapchat. Please remember guys you are a TEAM! You need each other. There is nothing clever about saying nasty comments (even if you don t mean them). If you don t have anything positive to say, then don t say anything at all. Any form of bullying will not be tolerated by HSSC. Please can I also remind younger swimmers not to try and friend any of the coaches. We are not being rude by turning down your requests but cannot accept them for child protection reasons, sorry. Stay safe in cyber land please! GOOD LUCK to everybody for the season ahead. Remember The only difference between try and triumph is a little UMPH! Tracy Horner Team Manager DAN WILLIAMS DANNY BOY Hard work beats talent when talent doesn t work hard! Details of the Meets we are attending are on the club website with all the relevant information including entry requirements, closing date and entry form. We have had an increased number of entries where swimmers are ineligible or received after the closing date. We have been fortunate that other clubs have accepted late entry swimmers. Can I please ask that you check all the details before entering should you have any questions please speak to either your child s coach, myself or the front desk team? Sophie Warbuton The swimmers corner As the Swimmers Voice in this year s committee, it is my duty to ensure that any swimmer on/off poolside with queries or questions can come and talk to me and be confident that I will do my best to get an answer for them. An idea that has been raised recently suggested that, as a team we do not have enough time to get together (in a relaxed environment), and enjoy ourselves outside of training/competing. You may be aware that I had a walk around poolside earlier this month, to discuss ideas with Squad Swimmers about what they wanted to do, in terms of a Winter Social Event. I asked swimmers from our County, Regional & National Squads to list some ideas of what types of activities they would find fun to take part in with their peers from the club. As a result of these conversations, I made a list comprising of the 10 most popular ideas, and took it with me to the next committee meeting. After it was discussed it was decided that we are going to be looking into A Bowling/ Laser Quest Evening to take place this side of Xmas. It is a chance for the Top Squads to have a little friendly competition amongst themselves, without the hassle of Streamline and Stretching. Just a reminder that if any Seagull Swimmers do have any queries/ questions, don t hesitate to come and talk to me, or either of the newly instated Club Captains, and we will do our best to make sure that you get an answer as soon and clearly as possible. Callum Pearson.

Notes from the Head Coach It was great to see so many swimmers and parents at the pre-season meeting. Both Junior and CountySquads have settled in nicely into the new time slot swap on Saturday mornings and training for all squads is now in full swing after the summer break. To reiterate what I spoke about during the meeting, as pool-time is so precious, we need to ensure we utilise it to its full extent. This means: Being poolside 15 minutes before each session to mobilise Being ready to start your session as soon as you are instructed to. This means having your drink bottles filled as well as having all of your necessary equipment ready to hand. Push yourself during your training and complete 100% of the session. Take time to properly stretch afterwards. I also explained the benefits of adding drag trunks and snorkels to the kit bags of swimmers in County, Regional and National sq. Both of these new items of kit help swimmers to push themselves harder during training. The club shop will be selling snorkels soon. We now are in the middle of a very busy season and with 46 swimmers in attendance from group 7 upwards at the recent Littlehampton meet, I am delighted to see how enthusiastic our swimmers are. The coaching team wish you every success for the new season. Andy Hudson Head Coach Jessica Warburton

6 News from the Front Desk Monthly session fees: At their last meeting the committee discussed the continuing issues surrounding the delays in session fee payments. Despite newsletter requests and reminders on the notice board a number of parents are regularly two or even three months behind with payments. When reminded, usually by , the arrears are always settled but it affects the club s cash flow and makes a lot of work for the admin team. The committee has therefore agreed that from next April all session fees must be paid in the month on which they are due. Failure to do this will mean that swimmers will not be able to enter the water until the arrears have been settled. We appreciate that this may seem a drastic measure but it is the policy in place in the vast majority of sporting clubs in the area. We also intend to try and phase out cash payments. There are a number of problems with handling amounts of cash which can be resolved by adopting other payment methods. We currently support payments by standing order, internet bank transfers, cheques and we have introduced card payments although internet connectivity can be an issue. We are working on this. Final details of this shift are still being discussed but we hope to have this in place by the start of 2016 when annual membership and ASA payments fall due. Volunteer training: It s again been a busy few months for our volunteers. Emma Sargent has finished her ASA Level 1 Teaching qualification and has been busy with groups 1, 2 and 3. Our officials programme has continued with Julie Ayres, Tim Big and Megan Hawkesley all passing their timekeeper test while Ruth Mattocks has now qualified as a Level 1 Judge (J1). We are always looking for more officials so please speak with the front desk team if you are interested. Full training is available, free of charge, and it gives you an in-depth understanding of swimming and what to look for when watching swimmers in action. With an eye to future swim camps, both home and abroad, Andy Hudson, Sarah Campbell, Andy Harley and Matt Page have all completed their Level 2 Team Manager courses. These were taken by Tracy Horner who is an ASA accredited teacher for both Level 1 and 2 courses and runs these internally, for other clubs and for Sussex County ASA. Swim 21: I m delighted to report that, at the ASA National Accreditation Panel meeting held on the 23rd September, we were awarded swim 21 club Essential Accreditation. Those who attended our pre-season squads meeting will have seen our presentation on Swim 21 and what it means to the club but basically it is the ASA and Sport England s quality mark for amateur sports clubs. It immediately makes us eligible for up to 60% off the cost of Level 1 and Level 2 training courses (usually 375 and 750 respectively) and discounts off other training for volunteers. This qualification lasts for three years before we have to start the re-accreditation process again. ASA Annual Conference: On the 19th September Ruth Mattocks, Beverley Waldis and I attended the ASA Club Conference in London. This annual event allowed us to speak with senior members of the ASA, network with representatives from other clubs and attend a variety of relevant presentations including Funding and Sponsorship, Volunteer engagement resources and support, Effective networking, introduction to officiating plus an afternoon session on Finance and Marketing. We came back with lots of information and ideas to be digested and considered and a strong feeling that, overall, we are as well organised or better than the majority of the clubs in the southeast. Overall value for money especially as we saved 30 as a Swim 21 club! And finally: I m sure you will all wish to join me in congratulating Tracy Horner (Regional Squad Lead Coach) and Mike Hedley (Starter and trainee Referee) on their engagement. We re not getting too excited about wedding celebrations just yet as It s taken them 10 years to take this step! Well done Tracy and Mike.
