Don't forget to like us on Facebook! Welcome Welcome to our 10th newsletter! There is some important information and dates in this newsletter so please read and make sure you take note of the dates. A very successful AGM was held Wednesday August 1 in the clubrooms. The new committee are listed below. The Minutes and Annual Accounts can be found on the website. Our JUNIOR and SENIOR open day is Saturday September 8th. Your Committee 2018/2019 The AGM is a time for election of new officers and committee members as well as saying farewell to those people standing down. Irene O Malley is standing down as Club Captain, Irene was Club Captain for years, Thank you Irene for all you did for Greendale Tennis Club. Gary Wise is now the new Club Captain. Greg Margerison is standing down from the committee. Thank you Greg for all your efforts in club maintenance and looking after the tennis balls. Sue Shannon will now be in charge of looking after the tennis balls. Jane Wyllie is standing down as secretary. Thank you Jane for your service to the club. Victoria Roberts is standing down as membership manager. A huge job especially with the membership over 400 now! Thank you Tory for all you have done! Jac Wardrope is now the membership manager. 2 HARDCOURTS The hard-courts are regularly being used by club members which is fantastic to see. Please be mindful of wearing NON-MARKING soled tennis shoes. This will help preserve the life of the courts. Hot Shots Stars n Stripes Fun Tournament An exciting new initiative that will see a Hot Shots tournament coincide with the US Open in America. We want all Hot Shots juniors involved in this! A great way to start the season. Saturday 1st September 5-8yr olds RED STAGE 8-10yr olds ORANGE STAGE 10-12yr olds GREEN STAGE You must register with Luke for this event! This will avoid any disappointment when you arrive at the courts to play your game. There is something on at the club most evenings, so get in early and book your court. THIS ALSO APPLIES TO JUNIORS. Those that have booked a court, have priority over those that have not. IF YOU HAVE A REGULAR WEEKLY GAME PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU BOOK YOUR COURT! Coaching Jac has now been on board with me 1 year! He started out part time and now he is full time. To have 2 full time coaches at the club is super exciting. The coaching programs at Greendale are humming! A large number of Mensfit and Cardio Tennis classes are being run by Luke and Jac. Most squads are full and the space for private sessions are limited. 3 TENNIS XPRESS The programme is a fun, innovative way of teaching tennis which removes many of the barriers associated with learning the sport. Using low-pressure balls, and focusing on playing the game, adults build confidence as they receive simple technical and tactical advice adapted for each player s needs. CARDIO TENNIS Cardio Tennis is a fun, social, group tennis-fitness program for people of all ages and abilities. It is a high energy fitness activity that combines the best features of the sport of tennis with cardiovascular exercise, delivering the ultimate, full body, calorie burning aerobic workout. HOTSHOTS NZ Post Tennis Hot Shots is just for kids. Smaller courts, shorter racquets and softer balls mean that kids can play a proper game of tennis from the moment they step on court. Contact Luke for more information on any of the above programs! New Club Captain Gary Wise Firstly, thank you for the nomination and acceptance of myself for the position of your Club Captain. Can I take this opportunity to thank Irene for all her efforts over the last few years, as well as the other committee members no longer sitting. You have all completed a fine job and left the Club in a great position for going forward and capitalising on the ongoing success we enjoyed earlier this year with all of our awards gained. For me, whilst reasonably new to the Club, I m certainly not new to Committee s, Club s, Corporates or Boards. I have over the many years of my sporting life sat on a few Committee s, Boards and was also a Full time Rugby Referee with the NZRU. The professional Referee s were part of the same High Performance Unit that the All Blacks are and I learned some amazing skills on all aspects of Sports related topics during my 11yr tenure at NZRU. I have some ideas from those days that may be of benefit to Greendale as we strive to continue to be a great club going forward. The foundation has been well and truly laid here at Greendale and the new Committee were into action immediately last night with various projects launched and sub committees formed to complete these tasks. I personally have put my name down for the working group that is going to investigate further into the possibility of a couple of new enclosed structures around the immediate courts at the main entrance and on the recently concreted area by the hard courts. Tentative ideas and drawings for these look very cool, will be cosy on bad weather days and also will provide elevated seating opportunities for spectator viewing..watch this space, exciting times. The NCC is very keen to continue to develop Taradale park and we re hoping that we may be able to piggy back on some of their plans to save the club some money with these various projects. The challenge for the club after such a great last 2-3 years is to keep the momentum going, keep the membership up, keep our Juniors humming and going onto bigger and better things, whilst maintaining a fun and enjoyable element as well for those who are happy to come and have a fun hit now and again. Even more importantly, we currently have 1 of our members on a scholarship in USA and we have 4-5 others who have registered their interest in that pathway as well. Lets do everything we can possibly do as a Club to assist them with their goals and hopefully one day we will see a Greendale member on the circuit somewhere. I m looking forward to working with such a dynamic team of Committee and club members going forward. Thank you again for my nomination and acceptance, it s a pleasure to be part of a top club. 4 Senior Club Day The club would like to invite all Senior members and prospective members to come down to the courts every Saturday afternoon and play some tennis. Club days are run on a social basis, with the aim of providing a relaxed and fun environment, where players of all levels can mix and enjoy an afternoon of tennis. With this in mind, please be conscious that whilst those members rostered to do the draws will do their best to give everyone fair and balanced games, they can only do so given the constraints on the day. Please give them your support. If you do have anything you wish to raise regarding the club day or any club matter, please feel free to contact any of the committee members. Your Committee WE ARE NOW ON INSTAGRAM! CHECK US OUT AT GREENDALETENNISCLUB US Scholarship! Albert Rocard becomes Greendales 2nd junior to take up a scholarship in the United States. (Andy Shand being the other) Albert is off to the university of South Carolina on a tennis scholarship. They are 14th in the country in the top Div 1 division. South Carolina is only 2 states south of where Andy is, Albert plans to catch up with him when hes over there. Its a big opportunity for Albert as he was unsure because of his eligibility due to not completing his final year of high school. Good luck Albert, Greendale is behind you! Get to know Jac Wardrope What is your tennis background? Grew up in Auckland, started playing when I was 12, moved down to HB, played for Hawkes Bay and Havelock North Tennis Club. Highest junior ranking was 18 in NZ under 16s. What made you want to be a coach? Always loved sport and working outdoors although tennis coaching isn't a job! What do you do in your spare time? Hang out with mates, Go to the gym and train to try to be as fast as Luke. Favourite Movie? Blade Runner, Pulp Fiction Favourite Food? Japanese food. Where do you see yourself in 10 years? Coaching on the ATP tour with one of Greendales juniors! 3 words to describe Greendale: Thriving! - Welcoming! - Picturesque! What do you think of the tennis talent at Greendale? 6 Greendale Tennis Club Junior Newsletter September 2018 Ian Smith Junior Administrator / Coach Opening Day: Saturday 8th September (if wet, following week) Welcome to the Tennis session. We are looking forward to providing you with an exciting and busy Junior and Hotshots programme. Any questions please do not hesitate to contact me as we want to provide the best possible tennis experience. Registration is $130 per player for the whole season. This provides two terms of organised play and coaching, plus one years use of courts and lights. This newsletter contains information for this first half of the season (up to Christmas) so please keep it for referral. Tennis organisation for Saturday mornings: am Beginners HOT SHOTS PLAY programme 3-8 year olds am Beginners HOT SHOTS PLAY programme 9-12 year olds am Intermediate approx years (Blue group) and Seniors 13+ Silver and Gold 11.30am onwards Ladder Challenges and other activities Progression from Blue - Silver - Gold will be determined through the ladder. Saturday Mornings for Term Three/Four 2018 Sept. 8, 15, 22, Oct. 27, Nov. 3 10, 17, 24, Dec. 1, 8. We then restart in February first Saturday after school begins. Coaching News: Luke Donovan (Head Coach) will continue to be involved with our Saturday programme and our Monday Singles evening, ensuring these are action packed and fun sessions! If you are also interested in Coaching Squads or individual coaching contact Luke asap to secure a spot. We have more spaces now available with the addition of Jac Wardrope to our coaching team. Friday Junior Interclub 4pm to 6pm, starts at the end of October. There are different grades to cater for most abilities. This is a great way to improve your tennis while competing against players from other clubs. If you have not been in a team and are interested in playing ring Ian asap. Monday Singles Match Starts Monday 10th September. 5pm pm (Blue, Silver and Gold). Organised singles match play for any junior player who can serve and keep a rally going. A great way to improve your play and compete against a variety of different players! Luke will also be in attendance running challenging drills - great fun plus spot prizes every evening! Saturday Morning Coaching Week 1 Forehand Week 2 Backhand Week 3 Serve Week 4 Volley Week 5 Forehand Week 6 Backhand Week 7 Serve Week 8 Volley Week 9 U Choose Week 10 Surprise Registration and Subs We would like all players to have completed their registration forms and payments before the school holidays (please complete this online). This will help us in our planning and make Saturdays more organised. Please ensure we also have your address. Club Champs Entries for these will be taken soon with a closing date of Monday 29th October. Matches will then be played over the following four months. Holiday Programmes: There will be a coaching programme during the first week of the upcoming school holidays, the mornings of Monday 1st October through to Thursday 4th October - more details to follow soon. There will also be a Christmas Holiday programme the week before Christmas. More details near the end of the year. Greendale Tennis Club provides its Junior members many opportunities - please get involved in as many as possible. Remember to practice - you can have access to the courts at other times using your code, you can play under lights and you can book courts online, all free. We have a large supply of demo raquets available for you to try with racquet advice as well as a restringing service. I am open to any suggestions that you may have that will benefit our players and club and look forward to getting feedback from you.
