7 The Canada Summer Games occurs every 4 years and has proven to be a foundational athletic building block for LBC athletes. In the past we have seen three Leander athletes make it to the games. Doug Csima raced in the 2005 summer games for Ontario. The team won the games that summer and the experience launched Doug's impressive national team and eventual Olympic career. Doug Csima (20 yrs old) left, and Brandon Batey compete at the Canada Summer Games Doug Csima, LBC Taylor Perry, LBC Taylor Perry raced in the 2013 summer games for New Brunswick dominating the men's 1x and moved very quickly to the national team, winning a world championship in the U23 Men's 4x soon after. 8 The ROWONTARIO Club Elite Program was initiated in 2015 to provide club athletes and their coaches at the high performance level, the opportunity to train and learn with their peers from other clubs. Club Elite athletes are identified when they achieve a minimum standard on their 2k RADAR submission. One month prior to each Club Elite Camp, RADAR scores are evaluated and an updated Club Elite Athlete List is developed. An is sent to the Head Coach of each club identifying athletes that have achieved Club Elite status. Athletes are not invited directly but the Club s Head Coach is able to invite their coaches and identified athletes to participate in the upcoming Club Elite Camp. Mike Purcer, Director of High Performance and Coach Development, who coordinates the Club Elite Program, s a Club Elite Camp Schedule to invited athletes and coaches and works with the host club to manage the camp. The goal of the Club Elite program is to provide high performance athletes and their coaches additional opportunities for training and racing and increase the level of rowing in Ontario. High performance athletes require top level equipment and coaching as well as a challenging regatta schedule and ROWONTARIO recommends additional training in small boats (singles and pairs). Club Elite Standards Table OPEN MEN LIGHT MEN 74kg max. OPEN WOMEN LIGHT WOMEN 61kg max. The plan is to run another clinic for coxswains on racing/race day, as well as one on working with their coach/crew. Due to interest from coaches, we hope to run a session on coaching coxswains/how to get the most out of your coxswains. Watch for s/facebook posts to get the dates and times for these clinics! LOST & FOUND Please note that on the 30 th of EVERY month, we will be removing and donating all lost and found items left at the club. 15 Member s Lounge The member s lounge is located on the second story of LBC. To access the hall, use the smaller set (east flight) of stairs. Renovations are almost complete and this wonderful space will soon be open for LBC members as well as parents of junior athletes. One of our goals in part, is to provide a comfortable location for parents to use while they wait for athletes to finish their morning sessions. This location will provide a place to socialize with other parents, a room to work on laptops, have a coffee, read the paper or just enjoy the beautiful sunrise.

16 Work socks, monogrammed socks, wool knits...we don t care, just cover your water bottle please! Did you know that a lot of the damage to rowing shells arises from uncovered water bottles rattling around the interior of the boat? It s very easy to prevent. Simply cover your water bottles! A new LBC rule will include covering all on-board water bottles. Rowers will not be permitted to bring an uncovered water bottle into a rowing shell at any point effective immediately. Coaches please have an eye out as this is a club wide mandate. Thank you in advance. Rowers, we are putting a call out to you to design our 2 nd Annual High School City Championships shirt! The winner will receive their shirt for FREE! Submit your designs by April 21 st and the winner will be announced at Cities. Also, please leander.clerk@gmail.com to order your shirt today. Please indicate your name, shirt size and your school name.

20 Leander in the Fifties and Sixties History Corner During most of the fifties the sculling section at Leander led the way. During most of the fifties the sculling section at Leander led the way. The Club enjoyed some success in the Junior sweep categories at the Royal Canadian Henley Regatta including wins in a Junior Heavy eight in 1953 that included the now legendary Con Andreychuk and future University of Toronto football coach Ron Murphy and the Junior 155 lb Eight in 1956 that included Con s brother Vic Andreychuk and past President Doug Patterson. Here is what they looked like in 1956: Leander Junior Heavy eight,1953

21 History Corner Leander in the Fifties and Sixties Other victories in junior sweep categories included the 145 lb Four in 1953, the 155 lb Four in 1956, the Junior Heavy Four in 1957 and the 135 lb Four in The victories in Senior sweep events were confined to a pair of wins in the 155 lb Four in 1950 and There were no victories in the Senior Heavyweight sweep boats that Leander had dominated in the 1930s and 1940s a sign perhaps that Coach Paddy Cline had lost some of his magic. In fact there were no victories for Leander in any heavyweight sweep race at the Canadian Henley between 1957 and Dominance in the heavyweight category shifted to the west where Coach Frank Read of the UBC Thunderbirds produced outstanding crews that won Olympic medals in 1956 Gold in the Four, 1960 Silver in the eight, and 1964 Gold in the pair. It was the sculling section that carried the freight for Leander in the 1950s and early 1960s. In 1955 Con Andreychuk switched from sweep to sculling. He had a disappointing year in the double that season. He returned in the single in 1956 but had not yet found his stride. In 1957 he progressed to the final in the Junior single where he lost a close race to Tony Biernacki. In 1958 Con won every single race that he entered including the Junior single at the RCHR. At the same time a lighter lad was also winning races. Having taken up sculling in 1953, Jim Roche turned a rare trifecta at the 1956 Canadian Henley where he won the Junior 145 lb and the Junior 155 lb singles and added a victory in the Junior Heavy Double with Jackie Pearce for good measure. He won the Senior 145 lb single at the Canadian Henley in 1957, 1960 and 1961 and along the way had some legendary battles with Detroit Boat Club sculler John Welchi in the Senior 155 lb single event. This is what Jim looked like in his prime: Jim Roche in his prime.

22 History Corner Leander in the Fifties and Sixties Jim and Con Andreychuk teamed up in 1959 to challenge for the right to represent Canada in the Open Double at the Pan Am Games held in Chicago that year. They were in many ways a study in contrasts: one a true heavyweight the other a lighter lightweight; one tall and the other not so much; and, one talkative you can likely guess which one! the other, a man of few words. About the only thing they shared was a gritty determination to win. That spirit carried them to victory in the Canadian Pan Am trials. Jim had emptied the tank so thoroughly that he collapsed into unconsciousness at the end of the race. In Chicago the oarsmen from other countries assumed Jim was a coxswain, an impression that was dispelled when they won their heat handily and advanced to the finals. Regrettably, finals race day brought with it a head wind off Lake Michigan which gave the heavier crews an advantage. Jim and Con placed a close fourth and to this day Con is convinced that but for the headwind they would have medalled. Claude Saunders Senior was a tall, solid, big boned giant of a man who had hands the size of a catcher s mitt. By way of contrast, his son, Claude Junior, while he shared the lankiness and the athletic prowess with his father, was 135 lbs soaking wet. Jim Roche and Claude Saunders Junior are both perfect examples of the old adage that it is not the man in the fight that matters so much as the fight in the man. Claude was a part of a number of successful sweep crews in the fifties. He was the Oarsman of the Year in He found his true calling when he took up sculling in the early sixties. In 1965 he won both the junior 145 lb single and the junior 155 lb single. In 1967 he was victorious in both the senior 135 lb single and the senior 145 lb single. The Canadian Pan Am trials were held in 1967 in the week before Henley. Claude entered the race as a warm up for the Henley. When the dust settled he had earned the right to represent Canada in the single at the 1967 Games in Winnipeg where he placed fourth in the final. Claude went on to win the senior 135 lb single at both the 1968 and 1969 Canadian Henley. Here is what he looked like in his prime with his father and sister: Royal Canadian Henley Champions 1968

23 Leander in the Fifties and Sixties History Corner During the 1950s, and for many years after that, prominent members of Leander were active in developing and maintaining important organizations in the Canadian rowing community including the national governing body then known as the CAAO (Canadian Association of Amateur Oarsmen), the CSSRA (Canadian Secondary School Rowing Association) and CORA (Central Ontario Rowing Association). Claude Saunders began his long association with the Royal Canadian Henley Regatta. He was appointed the Chairman of the regatta in 1958 a post he held with distinction for 40 years until The financial condition of the Club was stable through the 1950s thanks to the popularity of the dance hall. The funds generated through the social activities put the Club in a position to build a new clubhouse when the Centennial Docks development on the harbour forced the Club to move to its current location. Even so the last $100,000 of the construction costs were financed by a number of members mortgaging their homes to complete the building. The completion of the construction of the new building was not the only significant change also saw the retirement of Leander s esteemed, long serving head coach Paddy Cline. A new chapter in the history of the Club began with the appointment of Jim Roche as head coach in George Gage
