1 Reno Tennis Club Newsletter Q A message from the President: As some of you may know our fiscal year at Reno Tennis Club runs from March 1st through the end of February. The time is here for us to start encouraging everyone to get their 2018 Reno Tennis Club dues in. Without your dues we would not be able to improve and maintain our facilities; the nicest place to play tennis in Reno. We re additionally taking this opportunity to thank you for your past support! 2017 accomplishments: We resurfaced Courts 5 and 6 as well as the pad at the hitting wall. (If you get a chance take a look at our hitting wall. It is by far the nicest one in Reno.) We purchased and installed a couple of new backdrops. If you are an avid tennis player you know how important it is to have that contrast to see the ball better. Research says that blue works best with the yellow tennis ball, so that is what we have. We replaced all the nets and straps, something we had to hold off on until our budget allowed for it. We purchased a couple of new benches for Court 2 to replace broken ones and bought 3 new garbage receptacles for Courts 2, 4 and 6. All of which came from your paid dues. There are always the general expenses for upkeep that have to be considered: gas, repairs for the blowers and lawnmower, garbage bags for the receptacles, insurance, etc. All of the above listed are paid directly from your dues and contributions. Remember we get no assistance for any of these expenses from the county. The county's contribution this past year was an asphalt overlay of the walkways around the courts which really dressed up the place and made it a bit safer by fixing all the holes. They also empty the many garbage cans and clean the bathrooms twice a week. If everyone were to play at four or five other facilities and courts in the area, it might make players realize and appreciate what we have at Reno Tennis Club/Washoe Courts. Whether it is the great surface, the nets, backdrops, the speed at which the courts are made playable after rain/snow storms, or just the fact that all the courts are cleaned three to five times a week (by a volunteer), it is simply a great place to play and to bring out the best in your game. I hope you choose to join again this year and support "your" club. Remember that your dues are tax deductible (See the application.) We have many, many nonmembers playing at Washoe who are enjoying the benefits of your dues. We will have fewer USTA teams this year due in part to the age of many of our players. All USTA players are required to be members, therefore, we will lose some dues with fewer teams. We need to encourage everyone to help keep our courts as they are the best in Reno. It would be nice also to "thank an uncompensated volunteer" for the work they unselfishly do at Reno Tennis Club. Ray Woolley President Reno Tennis Club

3 New Year s Day Tennis The weather has been a bit uncooperative at times this winter. But on those sunny days, like New Year s Day, some of our members got out and hit a few balls, enjoyed the sunshine and more. Keep moving! Dori DeVries NorCal s Player of the Year Recently, we had a chance to catch up with Dori, between matches, in Palm Desert, CA. Her story, besides being incredibly inspirational and motivating, is truly a dream come true for amateur tennis players. Dori started playing tennis at age 38. She played softball until a grade school friend asked her to join their D level tennis team to fill out the roster. She had never played tennis, but borrowed a racquet from a neighbor, and began hitting balls against a wall. Five days later she was hooked. That was 42 years ago. In 2015 Dori won all four National Championships, (Clay, Grass, Hardcourt and Indoors) in doubles, a Gold Slam. In 2016 she won all four National Championships in singles, a second Gold Slam. She was elected into the NorCal USTA Hall of Fame in Her three most memorable years. In 2017, Dori was selected as the NorCal USTA Player of the year, for a second time, after winning the ASICS World Tennis Classic W75 Doubles, the USTA National Hard Court W80 Doubles Championship, the USTA National Grass Court W80 Singles Championship, the USTA National Indoor W80 Doubles Championship and compiling an overall 29-9 record in USTA National events. Dori also reached the finals of the ITF Super-Senior World Individual Championship. But she doesn t play for the trophies and awards. She plays for the love of the game. Dori was selected to represent the United States 18 of the last 19 years in international tennis play. Her 2017 Doris Hart Cup team cruised to the finals without losing a match, before winning a close match-up with the Canadian team and bringing home seven out of a possible nine trophies. Dori won both her singles and doubles matches in the finals for the Team USA victory. Dori, 80 years young, attributes her longevity to good genes and luck. She stretches daily, plays almost every day and sometimes twice a day. She calls her serve puny, but the spins drive opponents crazy. And after her matches, she enjoys a margarita on the rocks, no salt. Congratulations, and thank you, Dori, for being an inspiration to us all! USA Doris Hart Cup Winners (80 and over) L-R: Carol Wood, Dori DeVries, Roz King and Burnett Herrick

7 Tennis Rules and The Code When the professionals play tennis, the chair umpire and lines people officiate the match using the official rules of the International Tennis Federation (ITF), of which the United States Tennis Association (USTA) is a member. The ITF rules can be found here. The USTA has its own handbook. But when we play for fun or even competitively we don t have officials to help us. Therefore we should follow The Code to ensure that we are playing fairly. Question: I played a USTA match today and my opponent called his own let after doing one of his serves. I returned the ball for a winner. He said he called a let but I said the server can't call his own let. Who is right? Answer: Few people know this, but according to "The Code, a Players' Guide to Unofficiated Matches", any player (in singles or doubles) can call a service let (ball touching the net). It must be done promptly. Usually the receiver(s) make the call and many players on the serving side decide not to get involved with the call thinking maybe they were mistaken. If the server hears a clear let and the receiver does not call it, it is best for the server to call it ASAP. Otherwise, the server hears a let and the receiver hits a winner, and after some hesitation, the server asks "Did you hear a let?" That is always a difficult situation to resolve after the point has been played. Question: During my match, I did not pick up a ball on my side of the court because it was closer to the net and out of the way in my mind. During the following point, the ball landed on the ball left on the court. I was not able to reach the ball that was misdirected as a result of hitting the ball. Can I call a let? Answer: No, you may not call a let in this situation. Because you chose to leave the ball on the court, it became part of the court for that point and you accepted the risk of the ball in play bouncing off the stray ball. Per Rule 26, you are not entitled to a let for hindrance when the hindrance is something you caused. Recycle your old tennis balls! And help build courts for kids. When you come to the courts look for the tennis ball recycling bin on the fence. By donating your used tennis balls, you will be helping the environment. The balls are crushed, the felt removed and then the balls are ground into a 99% pure tennis crumb rubber product used in many environmentally friendly products. We can thank Holland & Hart law firm, for sponsoring our recycling efforts at the Reno Tennis Club. Please don't dump old balls into landfills donate old balls to help the environment.
