Presentation made on the process of the Strategic Plan. Mission and vision of VM reviewed. VM wants to lead and support the membership to grow the sport. Members, leagues, players, officials, coaches all needed to fulfill Strategic Plan. Provincial High Performance Coach, Scott Koskie, presented the new NCCP levels and program. Three Levels in relation to LTAD Program: Development Coach, ADV Development Coach, Performance Coach. Evaluation of Coaches is another change to the process. Performance Coach level delivered by Volleyball Canada. All information on VC website. John Blacher continued a review on the following more significant upcoming events and programs: U Western Canadian Championship to be hosted at Winnipeg Convention Centre, May 12-15, teams expected to participate Power Smart Manitoba Games in Steinbach, MB August 11-13, Coaches for each region being identified. - Women s National Team Bid post 2016 submitted in August. Announcement to be made in early Bid includes new Sport For Life Centre Phase 2. Construction to begin soon. (Video Shown). - Canada Games 2017 in Winnipeg. VM to form indoor and beach teams. IGAC at U of M to host indoor along with the Sport for Life Centre. Cindy Klassen Oval to host Beach Volleyball. This is to be confirmed. Catherine Grace- Peters (Beach) and Greg Guenther/Pat Alexander (Indoor) Chairpersons for Canada Games Club Volleyball Provincial Championship Dates reviewed. To be over 3 weekends. - New Mikasa Ball to be introduced VQ2000 at the 13U/14U Levels. - Reminder of recruiting/scouting rules as school season begins. Tryout dates first week of December. - Club Volleyball round table meeting to be planned for October. Annual General Meeting Minutes: 1. Financial Reports In the absence of John Olfert, Treasurer, the financial report was presented by Rachelle Needham, Secretary. Highlights as outlined in the financial report on page 19: a operating deficit of ($7,542), overall net position of $22,474. b. Fiscal operating budget was also prepared and presented, outlining a $47,000 surplus. c. Financial accountability, stewardship and stability remains a priority for the Board. d. Rachelle thanked Sport Manitoba for their continued support and work in helping manage our accounting, as well as to the Auditors and Board members for their help throughout the year. President Mike Stephens thanked all nominees for coming forward, asks those interested to consider being on Committees. 10. Other Business a. Amendment to By-Laws - S. Scarcello reviewed proposed By-Law Amendments. i. Members include Competitive Member, Referee Member, Associate / Affiliate Member, Life Member ii. Voting rights modification based on team or registration numbers iii. Minimum of 8 to 12 members on the Board of Directors. Each member must be elected. Referee Member will be appointed by MVOA. Only MVOA position to be appointed. iv. Future amendments can be made at Board Meetings for confirmation at subsequent meeting of members. 6 2016 Board Executive Report Submitted by Secretary Rachelle Needham and Treasurer John Olfert While reviewing this report and considering the 2015/16 program year of Volleyball Manitoba (VM), the word solidify comes to mind. As members of our association read and listen to reports, this theme will come across in a variety of ways. First, we have had a solid board of directors who genuinely care about the sport of volleyball in Manitoba, and bring a diverse set of experience and training to the leadership and work of VM. Second, after a few years of staff transition, VM is in an excellent position, with an experienced, knowledgeable and committed staff team who carry the daunting responsibility of leading, managing and/or supporting all the activities presented in this report. Third, beyond our board and staff, the broader VM community continues to provide a host of coaches, officials, coordinators, parents and volunteers that provide players the opportunity to play and grow the sport of volleyball in Manitoba in a variety of settings (indoor and beach) and levels (ranging from 12U/13U sport initiation to Provincial and National Team participation). And lastly, based on the extended efforts of a variety of stakeholders, we have a real and practical 4-year Strategic Plan that VM has just be begun to execute against. Given the aforementioned elements, VM collectively delivered a solid year of results. These include: Financial and operating results that continue to provide a foothold for VM; A comprehensive year of programming ranging from junior/senior high school, age-lass/club, provincial teams, multi-sport events, adult leagues both on hard-court and sand all of which are described throughout this Annual Report; After a number of years of not hosting, Manitoba again prepared to host a Volleyball Canada event (14U Western Nationals); and Citing our mission statement, there was growth and excellence in a variety of ways ranging from outstanding results at national events, to seeing dramatic improvement at grassroots levels. With this solid foundation, VM looks forward to the coming year(s). Following the multi-year Strategic Plan, there are countless ways to improve and grow volleyball programming in our province. Our task and challenge will be to more formally engage a cross-section of stakeholders to grow our pool of players, coaches, officials and facilities through a mix of both formal committee work, and informally supporting the work of schools, clubs, adult-leagues, and other volunteers who do the front-line work of organizing teams and running events. In closing, this year (and recent years) of solidifying was due in part to the work and effort of two notable leaders; Michael Stephens (President) and Brenda Westwood (Vice President) both of whom are concluding their multiple-terms of service on the board this year. 7 2016 Volleyball Manitoba Board of Directors [Each section listed in alphabetical order.] A. Directors Concluding their terms: Shawn Scarcello Michael Stephens Brenda Westwood B. Directors Entering Year 2 (of their 2-year term): Jared Brown (Director) has served as a board member since He has been involved with volleyball in Manitoba as a player, coach and director. He has been coaching club since 2003 and has also had multiple stints with the provincial team program. Jared also coached at the University of Manitoba for 5 years and 3 years with Red River College. Jared lives in Winnipeg and is the Club Director for 204 Volleyball Club. Jayme Menzies (Director) has served as a VM board director since Jayme played five years as a University of Winnipeg varsity volleyball athlete and continues to enjoy Manitoba s senior coed, indoor and beach leagues. She is a lawyer who, in her free time, focuses her attentions on promoting and facilitating the physical, cultural and mental well-being of youth across the province through coaching sport. She has recently been named to the positions of 2017 North American Indigenous Games head volleyball coach and 2017 Canada Games indoor volleyball assistant coach. Tom Neufeld (Director) has served as a board member since 2015, and has been an active member of the volleyball community as a player in school, provincial teams and senior men s; as a coach in the boys and girls club system since 2006 and as a referee both indoor and beach since Employed in the financial services business, Tom is a portfolio manager and investment advisor with CIBC Wood Gundy for the past 20+ years. C. Directors Whose 2-Year Terms are Concluding, and allowing their names to stand again for re-election: Tim Au (Director) has served as a VM board member since Tim has been a lifelong active member in Manitoba's volleyball community as he transitioned from an athlete in the high school and club systems into a volunteer and coach. Tim is an NCCP fully certified Level 3 coach, as well as an NCCP Coaching Course instructor. Tim is currently an active coach at the grassroots and elite levels. Tim is a lifelong resident of Winnipeg, and a high school Physical Education and Sport Psychology teacher in our community, and is a strong advocate for youth. Glen Cook (Director WMVL Rep) has served as a VM board member since 2014, and has been active in Manitoba s volleyball community since the early 1980 s. He has coached his daughter while she grew up and continues to play in the Winnipeg Men s Volleyball League (WMVL). He has been involved in executive roles with the WMVL since the early 1990 s and has been the president for the last 17 years. In the role as president, he arranges over 900 games per year for WMVL working on all aspects of the administration of the game including; governance, budgets, schedules, contracts, financial management, disciplinary issues etc. Glen is a lifelong resident of Winnipeg, is a professional engineer by training and has been employed with Manitoba Hydro since Andrei Halkewycz (Director) has been a VM Board Member since 2011 and has served on several committees including chairing the Awards & Recognition Committee. He has been involved in Manitoba s volleyball community since the early 1990 s as a volunteer with Team Canada. For the past 15 years Andrei has been very involved in volleyball as a certified MVOA official, coaching girls high school and club teams, and for the past 4 years as a coach and co-club director. Volleyball and its growth in Manitoba is a true passion of his. Andrei is born and raised in Winnipeg, has a degree in Public Relations and has been employed at Halkewycz Law Office as Office Manager since Rachelle Needham (Secretary) was elected to the Volleyball Manitoba board in She has been involved in the volleyball community primarily as a parent to two daughters that have played and coached at the school and club levels. In addition to the VM board, she sits as a member of the board for Belgian Alliance Credit Union. Rachelle lives in Winnipeg, and works as a senior information technology consultant with Online Business Systems Annual General Meeting of Members 7

8 Kevin Neufeld (Director) has been active in the Manitoba sport community for the past 4 decades and looks to continue after his first two years with Volleyball Manitoba. A fully certified coach Level 3 coach Kevin has coached for the past 38 years and continues to do so in both the high school and age class categories. At Neelin High School Neufeld is about to begin his 34th year as a physical education / health educator. John Olfert (Treasurer) has served as a VM board member since 2012, and has been active in Manitoba s volleyball community having played school, club, university and senior mens, and then after some time off focusing on career and family, reengaged with the sport coaching the past 9 years in both school and club programs. John is a lifelong resident of Winnipeg, is a professional accountant by training and has been employed with True North Sports + Entertainment since D. Director Representing Affiliated Association Azad Hosein (Referee Director) has been involved with volleyball since Grade 6 after moving from Trinidad. The transition from outdoor sports to indoor took some adjustments. Azad played all the school sports at Hastings Junior High and Dakota Collegiate up to Grade 11. During the Grade 12 year, he focused on Cricket ultimately making the National Team. While taking his Commerce Degree at the University of Manitoba, he started coaching volleyball at Hastings Junior High. In 1991 Azad took the Level I Referee s course and became an International Referee in He has refereed over 100 International matches but particularly still enjoys refereeing Age Class and High School volleyball. 9 STRATEGIC PLAN In the summer of 2015 Volleyball Manitoba implemented a new strategic plan for the period. The plan considered feedback and information that was gathered through a consultative process that involved engagement with our members and stakeholders from all levels of our sport. This process gave VM a great opportunity for selfreflection and assessment, and we believe the plan offers us a road map to where we hope to be five years down the road. This plan will hopefully be achieved as we aspire to strengthen and improve how volleyball is delivered and perceived in Manitoba. Our province has a passion for our sport, boasting a rich history of volleyball success at the local, national and international levels that we want to see continue into the future. A summary of the plan includes the following mission, vision and values, as well as strategic priorities. As you read through this Annual Report, you will see that we ve incorporated an update and link back to the Strategic Plan where it was relevant. 10 VOLLEYBALL PROGRAMS 2016 Volleyball Manitoba Premier Tournaments Volleyball Manitoba began its development of a Premier Tournament Series this past season with the organization of two events, one for the 13U Girls category on February 13 and a second for the 14U-16U Girls and 14U-15U Boys on April teams in total competed in these two weekend events, nine at the 13U Girls event on Feb 13 and 62 in the Apr 8-10 weekend event. These events in part replace the Volleyjam event from past years and will be also be used to support and enforce the provincial ranking process. Moving Forward: The plan for 2017 will be to organize two events at each of the 13U-16U age categories, and we will look into events for the 17U & 18U categories this season as well Provincial Championships The 2016 Volleyball Manitoba Provincial Championships were held over three weekends in April & May with events being held in Winnipeg, Brandon, Selkirk & Steinbach. In total, 13 different championships were organized involving 186 teams. This is an increase of fourteen teams from 2015, mainly due to increased numbers in the 14U category. Also, numbers once again warranted a Tier 2 provincial championship to be held in the Girls 14U category. Expanding the tier 2 category for growth and meaningful competition reasons is a focus for VM as we move forward in the coming years Championship events involved the following events and locations: Apr 23/24 13U Girls MBCI, Winnipeg 13U Boys Glenlawn, Winnipeg (Sat Apr 23 only) 17U Girls - Clearspring Middle School, Steinbach 18U Girls SRSS, Steinbach April 30 / May 1 14U Girls MBCI, DMCI & Tec Voc, Winnipeg 14U Girls Tier 2 Shamrock School, Winnipeg 14U Boys Maples Collegiate, Winnipeg 17U Boys Red River College, Winnipeg 18U Boys Red River College, Winnipeg May 7/8 15U Girls Brandon University & Crocus Plains, Brandon 15U Boys Lord Selkirk Comprehensive & East Selkirk School, Selkirk 16U Girls Shamrock School, Windsor Park Collegiate, Victor Mager School, Winnipeg 16U Boys Tec Voc, Winnipeg The final placing s of all teams for each event can be found in Appendix A. Moving forward: We will continue attempts to minimize the number of venues, or use clustered facilities, as much as possible, while also addressing appropriate serving and free space, along with the spectator experience Volleyball Canada National Championships Volleyball Manitoba would like to congratulate all the Manitoba teams who competed in this year s 2016 Volleyball Canada Championships that were held over three weekends in May. In total, 135 teams from Manitoba competed in this year s championships, our most ever and a very strong representation from our province overall /2016 Annual Report

11 14U West Championship May Winnipeg 30 Girls, 18 Boys Teams 15U East Championship May 6-8 Waterloo 1 Girls Team 15U West Championship May Regina 23 Girls Teams, 10 Boys Teams 16U West Championship May Calgary 14 Girls Teams, 11 Boys Teams 17U Championship May 6-8 Edmonton 9 Girls Teams May Saskatoon 5 Boys Teams 18U Championship May 6-8 Edmonton 11 Girls Teams May Saskatoon 4 Boys Teams A summary of all the Manitoba medal winning teams and all-stars from all the championship events can be found in Appendix B. Volleyball Manitoba hosted a national championship event this past May for the first time since the open concept originated many years ago. The 14U Western Championship was held in Winnipeg from May 13-15, with eighty eight teams competing on 11 courts at the RBC Convention Centre Winnipeg. With the support of a dedicated and hard-working organizing committee, the event was deemed a great success from both an organizational and participant perspective. Moving forward: We look forward to next summer when the bidding for the 2019 & 2020 National Championships will be opened up, as we will once again pursue one of the national championship events to be hosted in our province Provincial Team NTCC (National Team Challenge Cup) Programs Six teams were once again organized this summer, with two 16U and one 18U team per gender. These teams were selected at the end of May / early June, began some on-court sessions in June, with the formal training period running from July The teams then competed in the National Team Challenge Cup (NTCC) from July in Kingston, ON (boys) and Richmond, BC (girls). The 16U girls and 18U boys fielded full rosters while the 16U boys and 18U girls fielded teams of less than 12 players. In general, the 16U girls participation remains strong and the ID camps were well attended. The 16U boys participation was low in Winnipeg, but the interest of a very strong group of players from Brandon resulted in one of the team s training in Brandon in preparation for the NTCC. Without this group of players from the Brandon area we would have only fielded one 16U boys team. The 18U girls participation was also less than hoped, despite the fact this team will compete at the Canada Games next summer. Players were directly contacted and asked to participate and a number of the top players declined. We will be addressing this starting in September. The 18U boys participation was positive with most of the top players involved, although the selection camp numbers were not large. The team performed well at NTCC s and should be a medal contender in Following the NTCC championships top athletes were identified and selected to represent Canada as part of the Youth and Select National Team programs. Congratulations to Talia Mcmurchy (Winnipeg) who was selected to the Girls Youth National Development team. See Appendix C for complete rosters of players and coaches of all teams that represented Manitoba at the NTCC competitions. Moving forward: Volleyball Canada has asked each of the Provinces to explore the feasibility of running a year round Provincial Team program with training occurring in the fall and winter leading to participation in summer Provincial Team programs and NTCC. There is discussion of the potential that these teams could compete against each other during the fall and winter months as part of a national league. In line with this concept, we are planning a fall and winter training program as part of the 2017 Canada Games and Provincial Team performance plans Annual General Meeting of Members 11

12 Canada Games 2017 Teams Volleyball Manitoba announced in March the Head Coaches that will lead our indoor and beach volleyball teams for the 2017 Canada Games that will be held in Winnipeg next summer. They included the following: Female Indoor (18U) Head Coach Josh Thordarson Male Indoor (18U) Head Coach Ryan Ratushniak Female Beach (20U) Head Coach Wanda Guenette Male Beach (20U) Head Coach Morgan Cheyne We look forward to working with these very qualified coaches over the next year as we continue to develop our teams towards a goal of medaling at the 2017 Canada Summer Games in our home province Team Manitoba Beach Performance & Training Programs Over the summer the Team Manitoba Beach programs trained & competed as they prepared for the Provincial and National Beach Volleyball Championships. The group of female athletes were led this summer by the 2017 Canada Games women s head coach Wanda Guenette. The program focused on identifying and training Canada Games eligible athletes for next summer as well as younger targeted athletes wishing to enhance their beach volleyball skills. The participating athletes in this program include the following: 14U: Sofia Gonzalez, Val Gonzalez 15U: Anna Maidment, Erika Vermette 16U: Jayda Nault, Jordan Hamm, Sydney Elliott, Shayne Nichols 18U: Josie Abbott, Kearley Abbott, Emily Yaeger, Brianna Patrick, Julia Tays, Sydney Kurth, Chaelyse Comeault, Paitin Devlin, Katie Friesen Training Players: Karly Smith, Riley Smith, Sydney Michalyshen 2016 Beach Volleyball Provincial Championships Manitoba s Beach Volleyball Provincial Championships were held on August 5 & 6 under clear blue skies at the newly completed Sargent Park Beach Volleyball Centre. The Sargent Park Beach Volleyball Centre will be the site next summer for the 2017 Canada Games beach volleyball competition, and is a CG2017 legacy project that will contribute to the development of beach volleyball in Manitoba for years to come. Medal results of the Beach Volleyball Provincial Championships can be found in Appendix D Beach Volleyball National Championships Volleyball Canada held its Canadian Youth Beach Volleyball Championship at Ashbridges Bay Beach in Toronto August 19-21, with 150+ teams overall competing including 8 from Manitoba in the 22U Male, 18U Female, 16U Female, 15U Female & 14U Female divisions. In the 22U Men s competition, the pairing of Dustin Spiring & Adam DeJonckheere of Winnipeg earned the Gold medal with a revenge win against Abrams/Kerr from Ontario, a team they had earlier lost to in the power pool phase of the competition. Finishing in 3 rd was the team of Callaghan/Shannon from Nova Scotia. In the 18U Female division with 25 teams competing from 8 provinces/territories, the tandem of Josie & Kearley Abbott of Winnipeg advanced through the competition undefeated until the Gold medal match, when they fell to the team of McBain/Monkhouse from Ontario. Finishing in 3 rd was Kells/Madill from Ontario. The 15U Female division had 26 teams competing from 6 provinces, with Anna Maidment (Winnipeg) and Erika Vermette (Morris) also going undefeated throughout the tournament until the final match, losing a close final to Armstrong/Torres from Ontario. 13 Other teams from Manitoba that competed in the championships included Gonzalez/Gonzalez in the 14U Female division, Hamm/Nault & Elliott/Nichols in the 16U Female division, and Yaeger/Patrick along with Beatty/Woodward in the 18U Female division Beach Volleyball League & Tournaments The 2016 Summer Series Beach Volleyball League, along with the Bandits Hot Summer Nights League, once again played out of Adrenaline Adventures. Registration numbers once again dropped this year (119 beach 2 s teams in 2015, down from 145 in 2015) and we will continue to look at ways to improve the playing conditions and increase the overall participation experience. A separate league was also once organized this past season by Beach 4 Life out of Maple Grove Rugby Park, affiliating itself with Volleyball Manitoba by requiring all participants to be VM members. Volleyball Manitoba also supported or coordinated tournaments throughout the season, including support for the Stefan Savoie Memorial Tournament in July at Melrose Community Centre that raised funds for the memorial scholarship program. Sargent Park Beach Volleyball Centre In August of this past summer, the Sargent Park Beach Volleyball Centre officially opened. Funded by the Canada Games 2017 Host Society along with the City of Winnipeg, this facility will be the official beach volleyball venue for the 2017 Games. Beach Volleyball is scheduled for the first week of the Canada Games, from July 29 August 4, During the Games, two competition courts and four training courts will be set-up for the competition. Following the Games, the space will accommodate 10 permanent top level courts that Volleyball Manitoba will be able to utilize for beach volleyball training and competitions, helping to develop the sport for years to come Power Smart Manitoba Games - Steinbach The Power Smart Manitoba Games is the largest on-going multi-sport event in the province. Like the Olympics they take place every two years alternating between summer and winter. The program is administered by Sport Manitoba and implemented by the selected host society with each Provincial Sport Organization (PSO) leading their sport specific planning and implementation. Volleyball was once again a part of the Manitoba Games in the summer of 2016, with the category being 14U Boys & Girls Indoor (born in 2002 or later). The 2016 Power Smart Manitoba Games involved 8 teams for each gender including 2 from Winnipeg, and one team each from Eastman, Central, Westman, Parkland, Interlake and Norman regions. Volleyball Manitoba would like to thank and congratulate all the athletes and coaches for their commitment to the Manitoba Games program this past summer. 14 2017 Volleyball Canada National Championship Dates & Location Volleyball Canada recently announced its sites and dates for the 2017 Volleyball Canada Championships. Championship events for 2017 (Western & National events): 14U Westerns Abbotsford, BC, May U Westerns Regina, Sk, May U Westerns Calgary, AB May U/18U Girls Nationals Edmonton, AB, May U/18U Boys Nationals Saskatoon, SK, May *dates include team check-in/practice day and 3 days of competition The 2018 National Championships will be an all-in-one event held in Edmonton, Alberta from May Junior High Challenge / Grade 9 Open At the end of each school season, Volleyball Manitoba organizes the Junior High Challenge and Grade 9 Open events. These events are not official championships and are open to all teams for participation. The spirit of the events are about participation, enjoyment and an opportunity for Grade 7-9 teams to compete in an open year-end tournament to celebrate their seasons and challenge themselves against other teams from across the province. In total, thirty two teams participated this past year in the three events that were run on December 4 & 5, Junior High Challenge (Girls 12 teams) Sturgeon Heights, Winnipeg Winner: Lansdowne Junior High Challenge (Boys 8 teams) Ecole Leila North, Winnipeg Winner: Sargent Park Grade 9 Open (Girls 12 teams) River East Collegiate, Winnipeg Winner: River East Grade 4-7 Development Program A very successful 6 week spring session was offered on Monday evenings with over 40 participants at Christ the King School in Winnipeg. The majority were playing volleyball for the first time, a few grade 7 players had played during the school season. There were no club players involved. The format was the Volleyball Canada recommended 4 on 4 model using the smaller badminton courts and nets. The program fit well into the downtime between the conclusion of winter ice sports and the beginning of soccer season (April/May). Moving forward: This coming season we will be looking at offering this program for two sessions (Fall & Winter/Spring) and possibly adding a second location. Bilateral Program Regional Development Volleyball Manitoba receives funding support from the Sport Manitoba Bilateral Program to provide development opportunities to persons from under-represented and/or marginalized populations throughout the province to actively participate in sport. This past year, a series of camps and clinics were held on The Pas and Flin Flon for athletes from 6 northern communities between the ages 14-18, as well as coaches / teachers involved in delivering volleyball in the region. An athlete and referee clinic was also held in Norway House the end of October. Adult Senior Volleyball Several volleyball leagues exist throughout the province that provide playing opportunities for adults once they are done with age class or post-secondary levels of our sport. This is important as we strive to promote active for life involvement in volleyball. With only the Winnipeg Men s Volleyball League (WMVL) remaining as indoor adult members of Volleyball Manitoba, efforts continue to build or rebuild relationships with other leagues, such as the Winnipeg Women s and Winnipeg Coed leagues. We also need to continue identifying the benefits and services that our adult members may desire in order for them to consider affiliating themselves as members of our association once again /2016 Annual Report

15 2016 Wezer Bridle Cup In an effort to provide our adult members with a unique competition opportunity, VM along with the WMVL organized an adult men s tournament in memory of Wezer Bridle, a founding builder of volleyball in Manitoba. The event was held on April 16, 2016, at Calvin Christian High School in Transcona, with 9 teams competing in the inaugural tournament. Moving Forward: Volleyball Manitoba will continue to work with the WMVL to organize and grow the event annually, providing a fun yet competitive opportunity outside of the weekly league play for our adult participants. The event is also an opportunity to celebrate Wezer Bridle s life and recognize his life-long contributions to volleyball. Funds raised from this tournament will help establish a Wezer Bridle Volleyball Support Fund that will provide assistance towards volleyball participation fees to young athletes with financial barriers. Super-Spike 2016 MTS Super-Spike took place on July 15 th and 16 th at Maple Grove Rugby Park with 470 teams taking part and over 7,000 in attendance this year. The event was able to raise $100,000 in support of the National Women s Volleyball Team. MTS Super-Spike combines Western Canada s largest outdoor/beach volleyball tournament with a weekend-long concert series, all set in a festival atmosphere. Over 950 games of volleyball took place over the two day event, with ten different bands & various DJ s performing at what has become one of Manitoba s premiere summertime festivals marked the fifteenth edition of MTS Super-Spike, and with this year s $100,000 total, the event has now surpassed the one million dollar mark in total revenues raised with $1,040,000. These revenues have helped fund and support the Winnipeg-based National Women s Volleyball Team for over a decade. Although the National Women s Volleyball Team will be relocating to Richmond B.C. at the end of the year, Super-Spike will continue to stay in Winnipeg. The funding model however, will evolve to now support Volleyball Manitoba along with two additional local charities in need. Volleyball Manitoba will become a staple beneficiary while charities will rotate each year. TECHNICAL LEADERSHIP Coaching Clinics & Development The Development (former level 1) and Advanced Development (former level 2) coach levels have now been approved by the Coaching Association of Canada (CAC) and will be fully implemented in These levels remain the responsibility of the Provincial Associations. The Performance coach level (former level 3) has shifted to become the responsibility of Volleyball Canada. Candidates are nominated or can apply to attend the 3 day performance coach workshop currently offered at either the male or female NTCC s or at the National Team training centers in Gatineau or Richmond. Those coaches who have started but not finished a level using the old context will need to finish it in 2016 or it will no longer be valid. Coaches who are certified will have their levels transfer over to the new context. How it will work and if anything additional will be required has yet to be determined by VC and CAC. Continuing education credits will now be required by all levels. Previously only the development coach level had started the 5 year cycle. VC has finalized the process for training LF s and Evaluators and Provinces will begin implementation in late Volleyball Manitoba was also involved in the delivery of the annual Great Plains Coaching Clinic last September. The clinic took place on Friday, September 19, 2015, 2016 Annual General Meeting of Members 15

16 at the Investors Group Athletic Centre, in partnership with the University of Manitoba, Sport Manitoba & Coaching Manitoba. This clinic was designed for all coaches as they prepared for their school or club seasons. Volleyball Manitoba was also proud to support the annual BU Volleyball Coaches Summit that took place on Thursday, September 17, Referee Development Report Submitted by Azad Hosein, Regional Officials Chairperson (ROC) My first year as ROC gave me more of an appreciation for the contribution Barry Miller selflessly gave to Volleyball. His groundwork made it an easy transition for me. In September 2015, our retention rate was 96% from the past season, with 12 new Level I referees. Bohdan Ilkiw did an exceptional job in coordinating clinics with VM and accommodating all requests for conducting clinics. We are currently exploring the idea of webcasting a Level I Clinic to reach more individuals in the Province. This would eliminate a lot of travel costs, and clinician s time. It would also be an avenue for coaches and players to learn more about the rules of the game. More leagues are using MVOA Referees, with Ed Toews doing a great job in scheduling referees to the various leagues and rotating the referee pool. During September, October, and November, we average 520 matches a week. Providing leadership at the national level, Ed Toews and Peter Henry attended the CIS Championships as Referee Supervisors, with Taras Ilkiw and myself attending as Referees. Moving forward: The MVOA has structured a Referee s Academy with the aim of developing a stronger referee pool for high level matches. Recruitment, retention and development will continue to be focuses. Winnipeg and Manitoba have benefited from the national teams calling Manitoba home by hosting numerous international competitions over the years including NORCECA Continental Championships, Olympic and World Qualification tournaments, World League events, Canada Cups and numerous exhibition series. Matches have been played over the years not only in Winnipeg, but also in Brandon, Dauphin and Winkler. Volleyball Manitoba would like to extend a huge thank you to all the people in the community that have supported the national team programs in many ways over the years. Whether it was the host committee that worked to bring and keep the teams in our province, the committees that helped host international events and matches, and those that helped raise funds towards team training and competitions through events such as Super-Spike and the annual auction they all made significant contributions that have been invaluable to the program. 19 FINANCIAL REPORT & STATEMENTS Volleyball Manitoba (VM) Finance Committee Report September, 2016 Submitted by John Olfert, Board Treasurer & Chair Finance Committee Financial results and position for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2016 are presented in the audited financial statements included in this Annual Report. As reflected in the financial statements and this brief report, results are consistent with the annual approved budget, and represent the work and activity of VM for fiscal 2016 (April 1, 2015 to March 31, 2016). In summary; 1. Financial Position. As reflected on the Statement of Financial Position, given an operating surplus of $12,524 during fiscal 2016, Unrestricted Net Assets grew from $22,474 to $34,998. While not having a specific target or mandate to accumulate a reserve, VM s Board of Directors is comfortable with this level of excess cash to manage seasonal and year-to-year programming and cashflow fluctuations experienced by VM. 2. Fiscal 2016 Operating Results. The Statement of Operations tells the story and reflects a number of hilites for VM s fiscal 2016 activity. These include: Receipts from Sport Manitoba Grants and Provincial Teams Expense were both higher in fiscal 2016, due to Western Canada Summer Games; Other Grants/Funders and offsetting Administration expense, reflect the addition of an additional shared employee, in partnership with Volleyball Canada (VC); Membership levels and fees remained steady; Increases in Athlete Program fees and offsetting Athlete Development Programs are the result of team selection and initial training for 2016 Manitoba Games (14U boys and girls volleyball); Growth in Provincial Championships (both number of teams and fees per team) was offset by reduced school (grade 8 and 9 events), beach programming, and other tournament play organized by Volleyball Manitoba; and Fiscal 2016 saw a raffle occur (Sponsorship/Fundraising), and the sale of an unused taraflex volleyball floor (included in Other revenue). 3. Looking Forward to Fiscal During the spring of 2016, VM staff prepared, and the Board of Directors reviewed and approved the fiscal 2017 Operating Budget. The budget quantifies a number of realities and initiatives, which include the following note descriptions (referenced in the budget summary): a) Sport Manitoba Grants declined due to both a modest reduction in base-funding and a partial year adjustment associated with the Women s National Team Program leaving Winnipeg during the fiscal year. b) Additional grant (and offsetting expense) for part-time VM staffing done in partnership with VC. c) Increased revenue and expense for Manitoba Games and new 12U Learn To Train programming. d) Plans for Volleyball Manitoba operated premier tournaments (in addition to Provincial Championships) in February & March e) Hosting 14U boys and girls Western Canadian Championships. f) Proceeds from a raffle and sale of taraflex volleyball flooring, will not recur in fiscal Annual General Meeting of Members 19

Notes to the Financial Statements For the year ended March 31, PURPOSE OF THE ORGANIZATION The Manitoba Volleyball Association Inc. is a non-profit organization and is exempt from income tax in accordance with Section 149 of the Canadian Income Tax Act. The purpose of the association is to provide quality services and programs that will assist in the promotion, development, and growth of volleyball in Manitoba 2. SUMMARY OF SIGNIFICANT ACCOUNTING POLICIES Basis of presentation The financial statements of the organization have been prepared in accordance with Canadian accounting standards for not-for-profit organizations. Financial instruments Financial assets and liabilities are initially measured at fair value. Subsequent measurement of financial assets and liabilities are at amortized cost unless otherwise noted. Financial assets and liabilities measured at amortized cost consist of cash, accounts receivable, accounts payable, deferred revenue and long-term debt. It is management's opinion that the organization is not exposed to significant credit, currency, interest rate, liquidity or market risks arising from these financial instruments, unless otherwise noted. Capital assets Capital assets are recorded at cost and are being amortized on the straight line basis at the following rates based on estimated useful life, except in the year of acquisition, when onehalf of the rate is used: Computer hardware 2 years The organization reviews capital assets for impairment whenever events or changes in circumstances indicate that the carrying value may not be recoverable. Contributed capital assets are recorded at fair value at the date of contribution. Contributed services A substantial number of volunteers contribute a significant amount of their time each year. Due to the difficulty of determining the fair market value, contributed services are not recognized in the financial statements. 6

Notes to the Financial Statements For the year ended March 31, 2016 Revenue recognition The organization follows the deferral method of accounting for Sport Manitoba contributions. Unrestricted contributions are recognized as revenue in the year received or receivable if the amount to be received can be reasonably estimated and collection is reasonably assured. Externally restricted contributions are recognized as revenue in the year in which the related expenses are recognized. The association accounts for other revenues using the accrual basis of accounting. Use of estimates The preparation of the financial statements in conformity with Canadian accounting standards for not-for-profit organizations requires management to make estimates that affect the reported amounts of assets and liabilities and disclosure of contingent assets and liabilities as at the date of the financial statements, as well as reported amounts of revenues and expenses during the reporting period. These estimates are subject to measurement uncertainty, and the effect on the financial statements of changes in such estimates in future periods could be significant. 3. BANK INDEBTEDNESS The company has a line of credit available to a maximum of $25,000, repayable on demand with interest at the rate of prime plus 3.00%. Bank indebtedness is secured by general security agreement providing a floating charge on all assets of the association. 4.
