3 page 3 BADGER BEACON CELEBRATING 25 YEARS Lots going on in Badger Region Classroom clinics, updates from NCAA and much more By Jim Momsen Badger Region Ref Chair On Nov. 3, we kicked off the Badger Region training season with a classroom clinic at Center Court in Waukesha. In attendance were six new referee candidates and about 20 used referees. The Nov. 15, classroom clinic at Madison College was also well attended. We had 8 new referee candidates and about 15 returning referees. Thanks to Teague Prichard for securing the facility and assisting with recruiting and set-up. We continue to schedule local clinics dates and times for UW-Whitewater, UW-Oshkosh, UW-Eau Claire, and Center Court are locked down. We re still working on nailing down clinics at UW- Parkside and Viterbo University. All classroom clinics are listed on the Badger Region Website at and include links to the clinic registration in Webpoint. * Brand new to Badger Region referees are required to attend a classroom training session, as well as complete their online training requirements. The last third of the classroom session consists of an orientation to Badger Region and helpful hints for Craig Madson officiated the UW- Eau Claire/Calvin match in the NCAA Div. 3 Women s Semifinal. new referees. * Experienced Badger Region Referees are not required to attend a classroom clinic and can take their entire training path online. Online ref-training requirements reduced! In addition to classroom training, all officials are required to complete online modules from USA Volleyball. The series of modules depends on the referee s certification level. Novice referees require completion of the most modules because they have the most to learn. As of today, we have reduced the number of required modules for Provisional, Provisional Plus, and Regional referees! The FROM THE REF STAND changes have been sent to USAV for resequencing and should hopefully go live this Wednesday. Also included in the training sequence is the appropriate level of Referee Exam. Referees rated as Candidate through Regional must achieve a score of 84% or above to pass their exam. Junior National and National Officials must complete their exam in 90-minutes or less and score at least 90%. Online training sequences for officials are listed in Webpoint under Region Ref/Score Clinics at: wp15/events2/events.wp?evt_categoryid=12&rf=ch&evt_chapterid= When selecting the online training sequence, please base the selection on your current USAV Referee rating. Note that the Referee Classroom Clinics are also listed on this page. Junior work crew training USAV Rule states, All participants will the rules of volleyball and abide by them. In Badger Region, that also means that all participants will know their work duties and how to accomplish them. Clubs are responsible for training their members in scoring, Libero tracking, Line Judging, and how to work as a second referee. They can accomplish this in a number of ways: 1. The club can facilitate their own group training session using approved USAV materials. 2. The club can have each of their members log in to Webpoint and sign up for the appropriate training sequence (Coach or Player), and complete the training in USAV Academy. 3. The club can contact Badger Region and schedule a group training session facilitated by one of Badger Region s experienced referees. This season, Badger Region is offering one free facilitated in-person clinic per club. Shout outs Congratulations to Badger Region Official Craig Madson! Craig - along with Jeff McKinney, Gretchen Galloway, and April Fricke worked as the referee crew for the NCAA Women s Division III National Championships in Pittsburg, Pa., this past weekend! Well done Craig! Also, if you follow Boy s High School Volleyball, you may have noticed that all of the Boy s State Championship Officials are Badger Region officials (the cream rises to the top). 7 page 7 BADGER BEACON celebrating 25 years AVCA, Region partners for The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) has reached an agreement with 12 Regional Volleyball Associations to enter an affiliate partner relationship for the season. The AVCA-Region Affiliate Partner Program (AV- CA-RAPP) is designed to link college and youth volleyball by providing regions with information on colleges in their area, familiarizing them with various recruiting rules, providing opportunities for engagement and recognition, and sharing educational materials. The 12 inaugural AVCA-RAPP members are Badger, Chesapeake, Delta, Florida, Garden Empire, Great Lakes, Heart of America, Iowa, North Country, Palmetto, Pioneer and Rocky Mountain. The AVCA will correspond with region commissioners and staff who will disseminate the information to their clubs and members. We are thrilled for the opportunity to serve these 12 regions, said AVCA Executive Director Kathy DeBoer. Our goals are to fortify the region brand, educate and engage their constituency by sharing our expertise, and build a collective sense of community. The AVCA-RAPP was created after the May 2018 RVAA meetings at which several region representatives expressed interest in a more formalized partnership with the AVCA. The program was presented to all commissioners at their fall meeting in Baltimore, Md., on Sept. 28, I m excited for the families and clubs of Badger Region about our new partnership with the AVCA, said Badger Region Director of Operations Jen Armson-Dyer. I m glad we re on the leading edge of working with an organization full of college coaches to help bridge the informational gap. This partnership will also allow us to recognize those region club coaches and directors who are committed to their craft and help their players and families grow and flourish, both on the court and in future endeavors. This new partnership between the AVCA and the regions of USA Volleyball is a great idea, said Steve Bishop, president of the Florida Region. This program will help to better connect our club volleyball coaches with the AVCA s college coach members. As our sport continues to grow across the country, anything we can do to help connect our clubs to more educational opportunities and networking is a plus. I look forward to rolling out the various educational, networking and recognition opportunities in the coming months and I applaud the AVCA for their work in our sport. Other benefits of the AVCA-RAPP are a region-specific map of college programs, general information on recruiting rules and terminology, a college coaches panel, educational materials for club coaches, and options to participate in AVCA awards programs. Most of the engagement between the AVCA and Region Affiliates will take place during the club season from January thru April. Law requires coaches to renew SafeSport Due to changes in federal legislation governing all youth-serving organizations, many adults who have previously taken SafeSport will need to be re-certified with new online materials. This training is FREE and should be taken by any adult who works with junior athletes, including relatively new coaches and longtime/ experienced coaches of all levels. Coaches will not be able to placed on a roster unless they re-certify their SafeSport training. Adult members should make sure to renew their membership before taking SafeSport because SafeSport is a free member benefit, and you will be charged to take the courses if you are not a member). Many members will see in their Webpoint accounts that their SafeSport certification expires on Oct. 31, Those individuals will need to take the new Core Center for SafeSport Training through Webpoint ( usavolleyball.org/) New faces take their seats on Badger Region Board The club season started off with a Badger Region Board of Directors meeting Sept. 9 at the new Badger Region office in Julie Voeck President Pewaukee. 10 page 10 BADGER BEACON celebrating 25 years How is the Badger Region Board structured? The Badger Region Volleyball Association is governed by a Board of Directors that must be elected by members on a regular basis. Area reps serve three-year terms, while members of the executive board serve fouryear terms. Members, whether they are players, coaches, parents, directors, athletic trainers or officials, are encouraged to communicate with their respective representative if they think policies or financial decision in the Region need to be changed. Some policies enforced by Badger Region come from USA Volleyball, our sport s national governing body, so those can t be changed. But many others can. The Board is advised by a 11 chairpersons (or experts) in various parts of the game, and five staff members (some of which have multiple responsibilities). The state is divided into five parts geographically for representation. Plus, there are two at-large board members who you can approach if you don t feel comfortable with your current rep. And there is a rep dedicated just to issues that surround our Junior volleyball clubs and athletes. You ll be hearing from each Board member twice a year in the form of a column in the Badger Beacon.
