KOKOMO S PAUL WILLIAMS TO BE HONORED WITH OUTSTANDING OFFICIALS AWARD Paul Williams of Kokomo is the recipient of the 2018 Interscholas c Athle c Official Associa on Award for excellence in the sport of So ball. He will be honored in a special ceremony during Saturday s state finals. The Indiana High School Athle c Associa on, in coopera on with the Na onal Federa on of Interscholas c Officials Associa on, recognizes and honors an outstanding official in each of 11 sports during the school year. Paul has been a licensed so ball official for 21 years, during which he has officiated 19 sec onals, 16 regionals, seven semistates, and four state championships in 2003, 2007, 2011 and He is the current technology chairperson of the North Central Officials Associa on, and is licensed to officiate football, soccer, baseball and basketball in addi on to so ball. Paul has also officiated the soccer state finals on seven separate occasions. Originally from Ohio, Paul is a graduate from Indiana Wesleyan and has been an engineer for 24 years at the Delphi Corpora on. In addi on to officia ng IHSAA contests, he has also been a so ball umpire for NCAA Division 1 contests in the Big Ten, Missouri Valley, Summit, and MAC conferences for 10 years. Paul has been married to his wife Michele for 16 years and has four children: Jonathan (35), Michael (33), Chad (33) and Blake (31). 6 CLASS A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP NOTABLES PIONEER PANTHERS (31-3) ICGSA Coaches Poll: #3 Pioneer playing in fourth so ball state finals and first since School is seeking first so ball state championship and second state tle this school year (football team won the Class A crown last Nov. 24 at Lucas Oil Stadium. Panthers returned nine starters from last season s sec onal championship squad which finished Team earned its third consecu ve sec onal tle with a 9-1 victory over North Miami on May 26. Champions of the Hoosier North Athle c Conference with a 7-0 record this season. Panthers eliminated a pair of ranked teams at the Frankfort Semi-State in No. 9 Fremont 3-1 and No. 5 Fron er 6-3 for the school s first semi-state championship. Freshman pitcher Hailey Gotshall has 29 victories and 272 strikeouts, the state s leader in both categories. She also is among the state s best hi ng a.613 average. Junior Mikenna Landis has 45 stolen bases, secondmost in the state this season. Junior Alexis Robinson and Gotshall have both scored 56 runs, ed for third-most in the state. Landis has scored 47 mes to rank 13th. Gabrielle Thomas is in her first year as Pioneer coach. 7 CLASS 2A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP NOTABLES BREMEN LIONS (26-3) ICGSA Coaches Poll: #1 Top-ranked Bremen making its third so ball state finals appearance and aiming for school s first crown and school s first tle in any sport since Lions returned eight starters from last season s 21-6 sec onal championship squad. Team has won 18 of last 19 games including a 7-0 win over #5 Tipton for the school s first semistate championship last Saturday. Team fell to Class 3A state finalist South Bend St. Joseph 5-1 in a April 25 road matchup. Lions finished third in the Northern Indiana Conference with a 10-2 record this year. Bremen captured its fi h sec onal championship in six years with a 5-0 victory over Central Noble on May 25. Junior pitcher Kaelyn Shively s 21 wins rank ed for fi h in the state this season. Sophomore Erin Coffel leads the state in HR (22) and Runs (73) and third in RBI (58). Her.600 ba ng average is also among Indiana s best. Team has won 13 games this year by the 10-run rule including two during the state tournament. Seventh year coach Mitch Huppert is a 1981 Bremen graduate. Team eliminated last year s Class A state champion and second-ranked Tecumseh 3-0 in the Forest Park Semi-State last Saturday. Six starters returned from last year s 7-14 team and rebounded to win the program s first sec onal championship with a 2-1 victory over Indianapolis Cardinal Ri er on May 23. According to MaxPreps.com stats, Speedway freshman pitcher Kaiah Fenters ranks seventh in the state with 20 victories and 10th with 209 strikeouts. Team ed for third place in the Indiana Crossroads Conference with a record on the year.
