Oklahoma volleyball is back at home on Friday, October 16 for a 6:00 pm match against Kansas State. It is Military Appreciation Night at McCasland Field House. Retired and active duty military members and their families receive $4 admission to the contest. About the Sooners... The Sooners are 7-10 overall and 1-4 in the Big 12 after a four-set loss at No. 2 Texas on Sunday. Oklahoma, which has lost six of eight dating back to September 17, remains a tough out against its competition with a record in sets played over that stretch. The Sooners rank 36th in the nation with a.258 attack rate; led by junior middle blocker Micaela Spann at.362 with 2.14 kills and 1.18 blocks per set. Redshirt-junior outside hitter Madison Ward is averaging a teamhigh 3.00 kills per set, including 2.95 in Big 12 play. Senior outside hitter Kierra Holst has lifted her season average to 2.48 kills per set, while averaging 2.68 against conference opponents. Junior outside hitter Kimmy Gardiner has been a steady force on both sides of the ball with eight double-doubles. On the Air... The match will be aired nationally by the FOX Sports Network and can be found locally on FOX Sports Southwest. Brenda Van- Lengen (play-by-play) Bill Ferguson (color) will call the action. Scouting the Wildcats... Kansas State is 10-7 overall and 2-3 in the Big 12 following a sweep of West Virginia. The Wildcats are 5-0 at home this season, but just 1-5 on the road. Outside hitter Brooke Sassin leads the K-State attack with 3.54 kills per set to go with 2.82 digs per set. Setter Katie Brand is second in the Big 12 at assists per set, while adding 3.00 digs per set. Bryna Vogel leads the tea, at 3.02 digs per set. Last Time They Met... Oklahoma came from behind early and often in a 3-1 win over Kansas State on November 26, The Sooners claimed the match by scores of 24-26, 26-24, and Holst led all players with 19 kills as setter Julia Doyle dished out 19 assists. Gardiner tallied her third double-double of the season in an 11-kill, 15-dig effort to go with two blocks. The Sooners hold a significant advantage over the Wildcats in the all-time series; OU twice defeated a ranked K-State squad in 2012 and earned a split in the season series in 2013 and Since 2006, Oklahoma has won 13 of 18 match-ups. The first contest between the two programs was a 1-1 tie in Lawrence, Kan. in The home team has won the last four match-ups and eight of the last nine. Doubling Up... Junior outside hitter Kimmy Gardiner leads Oklahoma with eight double-doubles on the season, which is good enough for third most in the Big 12. As a team, the Sooners are second in the conference with 21 total double-doubles. Kansas State leads the league with 28 as a team. Oklahoma is tied with TCU for having the most players record a doubledouble at five. Playing it Close... Despite 10 losses, including four at home, Oklahoma has yet to be swept this season and has been in every match it has played. The second set has proved most critical for the Sooners. When losing the second, they are 1-8 on the season. OU is 1-8 in matches tied at one set apiece. The first win in either scenario came against Baylor (10/3). Streak Snappers... In the OU Invitational finale, the Sooners snapped No. 7 Washington s perfect, 28-0 record in sets played. The Huskies, who improved to 10-0 with the win, had not lost a set all season. Against No. 3 USC in the week s opener, Oklahoma handed the Trojans their first set loss since the season opener on August 28. Though the Sooners are 0-4 against ranked teams in 2014, they have earned five sets against such opponents and have yet to be swept this season. Up Next... Oklahoma visits Kansas for a midweek match-up on Wednesday, October 21 at 6:30 pm. The game will be broadcast online at WatchESPN.com or on the WatchESPN app. Moving Up the Ladder... Seniors Julia Doyle and Kierra Holst look to continue their climb up the OU record books this season. Doyle is the Big 12 s active leader in career assists with 3,977. She ranks fifth all-time at Oklahoma after passing Rachel Jackson ( ). Holst is first among active Big 12 players with 1,193 career kills. She is currently 10th at Oklahoma after passing Margaret Page ( ) and Trenell Carter ( ) last Wednesday. Holst now trails Kerri Mulry ( ) for ninth by 50. 1,000-Piece dignugget... Senior defensive specialist Taylor Migliazzo (@mignugget on social media) reached the 1,000-dig mark against Maryland on September 18. She finished the match with 13 as her ninth of the win was the milestone marker. Migliazzo became the 15th player in program history to reach the 1,000-dig mark at OU. The most recent to do so was Maria Fernanda ( ), the Sooners all-time leader at 2,204. Migliazzo, who has 1,066, currently trails Gloria Holcomb ( ) for 11th at OU with 1,122. Big 12 Openers... Oklahoma opened conference play with a 3-2 loss at Texas Tech (9/23). The Sooners are now in Big 12 openers dating back to the league s inaugural season in OU s loss to the Red Raiders snapped a stretch of nine conference-opening wins. Under Restrepo, the Sooners are 9-3 in the first Big 12 match of the season. In home Big 12 openers, OU is 11-8; having won each of its last seven.

Outside hitter Alyssa Enneking was named the Big 12 Rookie of the Week (Sept. 14) after hitting.291 with a 2.67 kills per set average at the Borderland Invitational. She started all three matches after appearing in just one set through the Sooners first six matches of the season. Outside hitter Madison Drescher earned Rookie of the Week (Oct. 5) after hitting.385 with 2.38 kills and 1.25 blocks per set in a pair of Big 12 matches. Drescher and Enneking are the first rookie duo at OU to earn the honor in the same season. Last season, Oklahoma claimed five weekly awards with Marion Hazelwood earning the team s only rookie award. Julia Doyle (2012) and Sallie McLaurin (2010) hold the OU record for Rookie of the Week awards with three each. RPI Revealed... The NCAA released the first RPI of the season (10/5) with the Sooners ranked 54th. OU has dropped to 59th, but remains the highest ranked team with a losing record. 5-1 vs The Sooners ran a 5-1 style offense with Doyle as the setter the last three seasons. This season, Oklahoma has split its time between the 5-1 and 6-2 offense. Freshman setter Audrey Alford and freshman outside hitter Madison Drescher have been injected into the 6-2 rotation. OU is 7-6 when predominantly running its 6-2 and 0-4 when running its 5-1. Doyle is averaging 6.99 assists per set with 1.89 digs per set, while Alford has added 4.79 and Home Court Advantage... Oklahoma went 11-2 at McCasland Field House in 2014, including a four-match sweep of the NIKE Invitational. During a span of seven NCAA Tournaments since 2007, the Sooners are at their home floor. For the second straight season, Oklahoma set a new program record for average home attendance at 942. The Sooners previous best was 928 in Oklahoma was the last remaining unbeaten team at home in the Big 12 last season at 9-0. When he was just one-and-a-half years old, Javier Restrepo was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL). In August 2008, he had a relapse and received a bone marrow transplant and then received a liver transplant but unfortunately relapsed again. Javi fought the disease like a true champion, nearly beating it on multiple occasions before it ultimately claimed his life on July 31, 2009.

This is the third time this season that the Longhorns have held the No. 2 spot. KU is making its first appearance in the top 10 in school history. The last time the Big 12 had two teams ranked in the top 10 was the 2012 preseason poll (Texas - No. 2, Iowa State - No. 10). Both teams sit atop the Big 12 standings at 3-0, but will not face each other for three more weeks when the Jayhawks visit Austin on Oct. 24. Texas plays at Kansas on Nov. 11. Neither team has been swept on the year. Combined, they have dropped just 12 sets. The Big 12 opens the third week of conference play with eight league matches on tap. Baylor and West Virginia each host a nonconference contest, leaving just one non-conference match left for league teams on the season (Iowa State at Colorado State on Nov. 28). Oklahoma will be on the road for its pair of matches this week, while Texas Tech hosts two matches in Lubbock. Kansas is just one of three teams nationally that remains undefeated (Arizona State, Southern California). The Jayhawks are one of six teams that holds a perfect record in non-conference play. KU s undefeated non-conference record marks just the seventh time in league history a team has gone undefeated in its non-big 12 schedule. Three Big 12 teams rank in the top 25 of the NCAA s first set of RPI rankings - 2. Texas, 9. Kansas and 24. Iowa State. Big 12 Champions for Life, a new initiative of the Big 12 Conference, will debut on Saturday, October 3, during the first full weekend of league football games. The initiative will feature student-athletes, selected by Conference institutions, in a series of public service announcements highlighting the positive impact an athletics scholarship has had on their lives leading to stories of personal growth and success.
