The University of Oklahoma volleyball team kicks off the 2016 season at home as it hosts its first of two early season tournaments. The Sooners open play in the Oklahoma Invitational Friday night at 7 p.m. against intrastate rival. The action continues from McCasland Field House on Saturday with OU taking on at 12 p.m. and at 7 p.m. About the Sooners... Oklahoma finished the 2015 season by winning four of its final five matches, but managed just a overall record and 6-10 mark in the Big 12. The Sooners had a string of six consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances snapped, but look to bounce back here in Junior middle blocker Marion Hazelwood returns after her second AVCA All-America Honorable Mention and was All-Big 12 First Team a year ago. She hit.348 with a 2.12 kills and 1.09 blocks per set average. Redshirt-senior outside hitter Madison Ward was an All-Big 12 First Team pick two seasons ago and despite hitting just.202 in 2015 led Oklahoma with 2.95 and 2.60 digs per set. Senior outside hitter Kimmy Gardiner led the team with 10 double-doubles a year ago as she averaged 2.48 kills and 2.48 digs per set. On the Air... All three OU matches will be televised by Sooner Sports TV with each airing on FOX College Sports-Central. Saturday s midday match will be broadcast locally on FOX Sports Southwest. Veteran OU broadcaster Chad McKee (play-by-play) and Laura Alford (color commentary) will be courtside to call the action. Since the Big 12 began awarding rookies on a weekly basis in 2008, only Texas Tech in 2012 has had three rookies win the award. In the Middle... Middle blockers Marion Hazelwood and Micaela Spann hit a collective.332 overall and.317 in Big 12 play. Against conference opponents they combined to average 4.68 kills per set, which ranked second among the league s middle blocker duos. Texas Chiaka Ogbogu and Molly McCage averaged a leaguebest 4.85 kills per set among middle blockers. Spann s Micaela Spann recorded her 300th career block at Baylor (11/15). She has eclipsed the 100-block mark in each of her three seasons at Oklahoma and averaged a career-best 1.01 per set in Spann s career total of 313 ranks 11th all-time at OU after passing Suzy Boulavsky ( ) in a win over TCU (11/21). She sits six blocks out of the top 10; chasing Laura Tomes ( ). Big 12 2-For-1... Kierra Holst claimed Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week and Audrey Alford won Rookie of the Week on November 23. Freshman setter Audrey Alford made her first career start against No. 10 Kansas (11/7). It ended a stretch of 107 starts for Julia Doyle dating back to Alford dished out 37 assists in a four-set loss to go with seven digs. For the season, Alford averages 6.54 assists and 1.28 digs per set, while Doyle averages 7.50 and Alford picked up a season-high 55 assists in her second start of the year at K-State (11/11) in five sets. Killer Instinct... Madison Ward led the Sooners at 2.95 kills per set, including a 2.89 average in Big 12 play last season. For her career, she has 759 kills and 562 digs. Against TCU (11/21), Ward passed former teammate Morgan Reynolds ( ), who totaled 734 kills in her career, on the Sooners all-time list. Oklahoma opened conference play with a 3-2 loss at Texas Tech (9/23). The Sooners are now in Big 12 openers dating back to the league s inaugural season in OU s loss to the Red Raiders snapped a stretch of nine conference-opening wins. When he was just one-and-ahalf years old, Javier Restrepo was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL). In August 2008, he had a relapse and received a bone marrow transplant and then received a liver transplant but unfortunately relapsed again. Javi fought the disease like a true champion, nearly beating it on multiple occasions before it ultimately claimed his life on July 31, 3
