The University of Oklahoma volleyball team is on the road again as its heads to New Orleans for the Allstate Sugar Bowl Collegiate Classic hosted by Tulane, September 8-9. The Sooners open the competition Friday afternoon against Nicholls State before a Saturday doubleheader vs. Southern Miss and Tulane. About the Sooners... Oklahoma is 1-5 on the season, with its lone win coming against Northwestern State (Aug. 26) at its home NIKE Invitational, after a 0-3 weekend at the Bobcat Invitational in Athens, Ohio. The Sooners were without junior setter Audrey Alford last week, which forced OU junior Morgan Miller to run the offense in all three matches. She tallied a season-best 59 against Ohio on Friday night to lift her average to 7.52 assists per set. Alford, who started the first three matches of the year is expected to return, averaged 5.08 assists per set the first weekend of the year. Junior outside hitter Alyssa Enneking has been a force offensively for Oklahoma through the first two weeks of the season. She is averaging 4.05 kills, 2.64 digs per set and hitting.283. Enneking tallied a career-best 26 kills vs. the Bobcats last Friday. Freshman Kira Morikawa has started five of six matches at libero and averages a team-leading 2.77 digs per set. Triple-Double... In her Sooner debut, Morgan Miller recorded the first triple-double at Oklahoma in seven years. Brianne Barker was the last to do so on December 4, She posted 10 kills, 57 assists and 14 digs in a NCAA Tournament First Round win over No. 22 Tulsa in Norman. Miller accomplished the feat with 12 kills, 17 assists and 15 digs against Seton Hall (Aug. 25). She nearly duplicated the effort in the finale against Colorado (Aug. 26). Miller went for nine kills, 16 assists and eight digs vs. CU. GOLDEN EAGLES Head Coach: Amanda Berkley Record at USM: (5) GREEN WAVE Head Coach: Jim Barnes Record at TUL: (2) Scouting the Colonels... Nicholls travels to New Orleans after recording their first win of the season against Mississippi Valley State in the Sawyer Camillio Memorial Classic. The Colonels fell to Jacksonville State and UL-Lafayette before posting a four-set win over MVSU to conclude their weekend. Junior outside hitter Brieanna Hill set a career-high after posting 18 kills and 11 digs. Libero Emily Venable collected 70 digs over the tournament and averaged 5.8 per set. Scouting the Golden Eagles... Southern Mississippi, after coming off a 23-win campaign in 2016, currently sits at 6-2 for the season. The Golden Eagles soared past Alabama in the Jaguar Invitational posting a 3-0 sweep. Kylie Grandy recorded 37 kills and a.520 hitting percentage. Southern Mississippi s defense held Alabama to a.063 hitting percentage. The Golden Eagles finished the invitational with a fifth-set loss to Southern Alabama. Chandler Marshall collected 31 total kills through the day and Natalie Druhan top her season-high with 18 digs. Scouting the Green Wave... Tulane is off to a 5-2 start after earning runner-up at the Mississippi State Tournament. The Green Wave went 2-1 on the weekend; recording wins against the host Bulldogs and Grambling State. Tulane fell short in four-sets to Stephen F. Austin. Outside hitter Lexie Douglas led the team against Grambling, recording 10 kills and 10 digs. Oklahoma has faced Nicholls and Tulane once each in its program history and Saturday s match-up with Southern Miss will mark the first time the two teams have taken the floor together. The Sooners took down the Colonels, 3-0, in Houston in 2009 behind a 24-assist, 11-dig effort from Brianne Barker. In its lone match with Tulane, Oklahoma fell in three sets, 2-1, in Nacogdoches, Texas in OU-USM Connection... Sooner head coach Santiago Restrepo, who is in his 14th season in Norman, arrived at OU following a three-year stint as the head coach of Southern Miss. At the helm of the Golden Eagles program from , Restrepo amassed a record of 52-40, including a program-best record of 27-6 in his final season; earning him Conference USA Coach of the Year honors. OU assistant coach Kelly Files was a senior on Restrepo s first team at USM in A 2002 Southern Miss grad, Files stayed on as a graduate assistant before accepting a fulltime coaching position with the team in She finished her career ranked among the top-10 leaders in several categories after being a four-year starter and leading the Golden Eagles in kills, aces and blocks as a junior and senior. Saturday s match between Oklahoma and Southern Miss marks the first time that Restrepo and Files have coaches against their old team. Feeding the Hot Hand... Junior outside hitter Alyssa Enneking has been recognized as Oklahoma s All-Tournament Team selection each weekend as she pulled in honors from the NIKE and Bobcat Invitationals. Last weekend, she averaged 4.45 kills and 3.27 digs per set in Ohio. Enneking hit at a.245 clip for the tournament and posted a career-high in kills with 26 against the Bobcats (Sept. 1). Her 26 kills marked the most by a Sooner since Kierra Holst set the program mark in the 25-point, rally-scoring era with 32 against Iowa State in Preseason Team... Outside hitter Madison Drescher was the lone Sooner voted by the league s coaches to the Preseason All-Big 12 Team. Drescher s numbers against league opponents surpassed her overall numbers in 2016 with a 2.30 kills per set average as she hit.217 and added 0.62 blocks per set. Season Openers... OU is all-time in season openers following a 3-2 loss to Seton Hall (Aug. 25) at the NIKE Invitational. The Sooners are 10-4 in season-opening matches since the arrival of Santiago Restrepo in Oklahoma opened at home in back-to-back seasons for the first time since 2011 and Double-Doubles... Five Sooners combined for 28 double-doubles in 2016 and exactly half of those double-doubles return for Audrey Alford and Alyssa Enneking each collected seven doubledoubles a year ago. Alford picked up her first of 2017 with a 23-assist, 11-dig effort in the first match of the season. Enneking, who collected two double-doubles in one day last weekend, leads the team with two so far in Up Next... The Sooners are on the road for one final tournament as they visit Maryland, September Big 12 Poll Position... Oklahoma finished seventh in the 2016 standings and was predicted to finish eighth by the Big 12 coaches in the preseason poll. After five straight years as the unanimous No. 1, Texas is first in the rankings, but the Longhorns claimed just six first place votes, while last year s regular season champion Kansas is No. 2 with three first place votes. OU s ranking is the lowest since being picked eighth in 2008 in an 11-team Big 12. Against the SEC... The Sooners had won five of seven against SEC competition until a three-set loss to Georgia (Sept. 2). Oklahoma last beat an SEC foe with a five-set win over Mississippi State (Sept. 3, 2016) to end a brief two-match slide vs. the SEC. The Sooners are all-time vs. the SEC and 9-6 with Restrepo calling the shots. The Sooners most common opponents from the SEC include LSU (3-8) and Arkansas (4-3). Against the Pac The Pac-12 has held a firm grip over Oklahoma with a 24-2 advantage after OU dropped a four-set match to Colorado (Aug. 26). Who s In the Middle?... Oklahoma has had an All-American middle blocker every year since 2011 in Sallie McLaurin (2011, 12, 13) and Marion Hazelwood (2014, 15, 16). Hazelwood, an early enrollee in the spring of 2014, graduated in just seven semesters and transferred to finish her collegiate career at Washington. The Sooners also move on without four-year starter Micaela Spann, who graduated after earning All-Big 12 Second Team in Redshirt-junior Leslie Atherton is the lone returner at middle blocker and has appeared in 12 sets over the last two seasons. She is joined by freshmen Paige Anderson and Katherine Cashman competing for rotations at middle blocker. Academic Honors... A program-record 11 Sooners were named to the 2016 Academic All-Big 12 Team; tied with K-State for the most in the league. Nine Sooners earned First Team recognition, while two earned Second Team honors. Micaela Spann became the first three-time Academic First Team selection since Sallie McLaurin ( ). Kimmy Gardiner followed up a 2015 Second Team honor with a First Team spot and Lauren English appeared on the First Team after a Second Team nod in Miller Transfers to OU... Oklahoma added junior setter/outside hitter Morgan Miller to its roster after she transferred from Louisville. Miller totaled 100 sets as a sophomore in 2016 and averaged 1.97 kills, 1.67 assists, 0.93 digs and 0.52 blocks per set. The 6-foot lefty can run the Sooner offense, while also swinging from the right side. The Home Crowd... The Sooners hosted No. 4 Texas in front of a crowd of 1,874 at Mc- Casland Field House on September 28, It marked the seventh largest home crowd in program history. Each of the Sooners last four home matches against the Longhorns ranks in the top-10 for home attendance. Oklahoma hosted its second four-digit home crowd of the season against No. 4 Kansas (Nov. 5, 2016) with 1,052 fans in attendance. When he was just one-and-ahalf years old, Javier Restrepo was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL). In August 2008, he had a relapse and received a bone marrow transplant and then received a liver transplant but unfortunately relapsed again. Javi fought the disease like a true champion, nearly beating it on multiple occasions before it ultimately claimed his life on July 31, 3
