1 Girls Tennis (May Final) 2015 season complete. Century finished runner-up at the N.D. State Tournament, falling to G.F. Red River in the title match. Century, the top seed from the West, opened with a win over Valley City and then defeated Fargo Davies in the semifinals. Minot finished sixth. After losing to Fargo Shanley in the quarterfinals, the Majettes bounced back with a win over Dickinson in loser-out play before falling to Valley City in the fifth place match. Williston, the No. 3 seed from the West dropped both its matches, losing to Fargo Davies and Valley City. Dickinson, the No. 4 seed from the West, lost matches to G.F. Red River and Minot. Minot's Haya Dodin was the youngest participant, a seventh grader...of the 16 WDA players competing in the doubles tournament, just two were seniors (Century's Morgan Grinsteiner and Minot's Latasha Klein)...WDA singles players went in tournament matches. Century's Jamie Stoppler won four. WDA doubles teams fared a bit better, going (St. Mary's Emily Bichler and Regan Bradley won four.)...all-state selections were: Singles: Alyssa Wolf, Century; Doubles: Anne Dickson/Morgan Grinsteiner, Century...Minot's Scott DeLorme was named co-coach of the year with Valley City's Matt Nielson. Team of the week: Century The Patriots came a match away from earning its first state championship in more than a decade. Century lost 3-2 to 14- time defending state champion, G.F. Red River, in the team tournament. In individual play, the Patriots had two singles players and one doubles team place in the top five. Bismarck High The Demons had a pair of singles players participate at the N.D. State Tournament. Freshman Lauryn Andre, 4W seed, went 0-2, while sophomore Skyler LaFave, 6W, also finished season complete N.D. State Tournament, Minot May 21 Quarterfinals 1E G.F. Team Tournament, falling by one match to 14-time defending champion G.F. Red River, 3-2. Century opened with a 4-1 win over Valley City and then topped Fargo Davies, 4-1, in the semifinals. In the individual tournament, Century junior Alyssa Wolf placed third in singles play. Wolf, 1W seed, posted a 3-1 record. Freshman Jamie Stoppler was fifth. Stopper, 3W seed, went 4-1. The 1W seeded doubles team of Anne Dickson-Morgan Grinsteiner placed fourth with a 2-2 record. Gabby Holmen-Britta Knudson, the 3W seed, posted a 2-2 mark. Stoppler posted a 7-1 record in singles matches throughout the state tournament in team and individual play. Dickinson The Midgets (5-9 overall; 1-6 WDA) dropped both of their matches in the N.D. Team Tournament. Dickinson lost to eventual champion G.F. Red River, 5-0, in the quarterfinals and then were edged, 3-2, by rival Minot in consolation play. The Midgets to have a pair of singles players compete at the N.D. State Tournament. Junior Ireland Jung, 8W seed, went 1-2. Senior Meryl Kovacs, 5W seed, dropped two matches. The Blue Jays' doubles pair of Bailee Graves and Kaitlin Mullowney competed as the 7W seed. The team went 1-2. Minot The Majettes (11-7 overall; 5-2 WDA) placed sixth in the N.D. St. Mary's The Saints' doubles team of Emlly Bichler-Regan Bradley, finished fifth. The 2W seed posted a 4-1 record. Lauren Nordberg and Lauren Botsford, 8W seed, dropped their two matches. Williston The Coyotes (13-7 overall; 5-2 WDA) lost both of its matches in the N.D. Team Tournament. 2 Girls Tennis (May 17-23) Century, Minot, Williston and Dickinson will compete at the N.D. State Tournament this week in Minot. Four quarterfinals will be played on Thursday, May 21 with consolation and semifinals to follow. On Friday, May 22, the fifth place, third place and championship matches will be held. The last WDA team to win a state title was Century in Top seed Century won the West Region Tournament, topping No. 2 Minot in the championship. Those two teams along with No. 3 Williston and No. 7 Dickinson advanced to the state tournament with victories in state qualifying matches. In individual play, Century s Alyssa Wolf was the singles champion. The doubles team of Anne Dickson/Morgan Grinsteiner of Century won the region title. Morgan Grinsteiner, Century; Latasha Klein, Minot; Meryl Kovacs, Dickinson were region senior athlete of year nominees...scott DeLorme of Minot was named region coach of the year...century extended its consecutive state tournament appearance to 27 years. Team of the week: Dickinson The Midgets entered the West Region Tournament as the No. 7 seed and with just three win dual wins this spring. However, the squad rose to the occasion, winning two of three matches to advance to the state tournament for a second year in a row. Bismarck High The Demons (WDA: 1-6; Overall: 3-9) dropped two games at the West Region Tournament, falling to Century in the quarterfinals and in loser-out play. BHS topped Legacy earlier in the week in a region play-in game. In the individual tournament, Lauryn Andre finished fourth in singles to quality for state. Skyler LaFave was sixth in singles play. Alyssa Wolf won singles title. Jamie Stoppler was third in singles. Anne Dickson-Morgan Grinsteiner won the doubles championship. Gabby Holmen-Britta Knudson were third in doubles. Following a quarterfinal loss to Minot, the Midgets defeated Mandan in loser-out play and then knocked off No. 4 St. Mary s in a state qualifier. In the individual tournament, Ireland Jung qualified in singles play, finishing eighth. The Blue Jays then fell to Williston in a state qualifier. did pick up a state qualifier in doubles play. The pair of Bailee Graves-Kaitlin Mullowney were seventh. Hannah Felt and Brianna Metzger were both 0-2. Mandan The Braves (WDA: 3-4; Overall: 4-9) dropped both games at the West Region Tournament. The Braves, the No. 7 seed, loss to Williston in the opening round and then to Dickinson in loserout play. The squad did not have any individual players or doubles teams qualify for state. Singles records: Kenna Vogel, 2-2; Miranda Lowman, 2-2; McKenzie Zacha, 1-2 Doubles records: Cordova-Ripplinger, 1-2; Sneed-Tweten, 0-2 Minot The Majettes (WDA: 5-2; Overall: 10-5) posted a 2-1 record at the West Region Tournament, reaching the championship, before falling to Century. The Majettes opened with a win over Dickinson and then defeated Williston in the semifinals. Haya Dodin finished seventh in singles play to qualify. In doubles play, Latasha Klein and Evie Reynolds were fourth. Kali Askvig and Alyssa Henson were sixth. The Coyotes, the No. 3 seed, defeated Mandan in the opening round before dropping a 3-2 decision to Minot in the semifinals. Williston rebounded with a victory over in a state qualifier. Williston also had success in the individual tournament. Keyanna Enget finished runner-up in singles play. The doubles team of Kaylen Barstad-Bethanie Pippin were fifth. 3 Girls Tennis (May 10-16) The postseason begins this week for WDA teams. A play-in match between the No. 8 finisher Bismarck High and Legacy will be held on Tuesday, May 12. The winner will advance to a quarterfinal match on Thursday, May 14 against top seed Century at the West Region Tournament in Minot. Other quarterfinals area: No. 2 Minot vs. No. 7 Dickinson; No. 3 Williston vs. No. 6 Mandan; No. 4 St. Mary s vs. No. 5 Mandan. The semifinal/loser-out rounds will then be held followed by the championship and statequalifying matches. The top four teams will advance to the state tournament which will also be in Minot, May The individual portion of the tournament gets underway on Friday, May 15.
