3 SCHEDULE and PERFORMANCE COMMITMENT: BEST TEAM in June/July NOT in January/February V. Off Season A. Primary goal is to improve skills and gain experience 1. 80% individual skills development 2. Important time to gain experience 3. Players may get worse before getting better PLAYERS MUST BE IN SHAPE WHEN SEASON BEGINS Higher level of competition be able to endure physical demands of training VI. The Big Picture A. Daily inventory of personnel and facilities 1. Are there any conflicts? 2. How many players will be at practice? 3. How many at each position? 4. Any limits physically to what they must do? (i.e. no overhead skills) 5. Any late or leaving early? 6. How many coaches, managers, assistant coaches available? 7. How many courts and nets available? **push for 2 nets minimum in practice facilities VII. Developing the Practice Plan A. Start Writing * As writing occurs (make notes along right margin of paper), have the groups written or select the groups at practice based on turn out. ** Start players in drills where they would play in the game (i.e. setter at RBk for defensive digging drills). 1. Develop a list of tasks. 2. From there, plug into practice (prioritize); pick what is most important. 3. Select Drills that are appropriate to the focus of your practice session. 4. Develop a time frame. B. Flow of Practice 1. Warm Up a minutes b. Includes ball handling and stretching c. Goal is to be warm and break a sweat 2. Ball Handling a. Ball control combined with prescribed footwork patterns b. Goal is to develop team rhythm Page 3 of 6

Groups are position specific 5. Cool Down (most important) a. Small group skills b. Groups are position specific 6. Noteworthy a. Typically not going to do all drills b. Focus of the day may be: SIDE OUT day or BLOCK TRANSITION day c. List players by jersey number or first name, etc. when placing into small groups/position specific drills VIII. Evaluation 1. Purpose: Help to plan better practices a. Always evaluate how practice was physically. b. Get an idea from players. c. Careful not to overwork players d. How challenging was it MENTALLY? (Fast-paced practices works on mental focus) e. What drills are working particularly well? (Feel free to change) f. What would I do to change it to be more challenging, fast-paced? g. What have I learned from my team at this practice? h. How often do we use the same drills in practice?.a LOT. Add one item which changes the focus a little. Go back to the same drill so the team sees its progress. i. What do you want to accomplish? EX: 75 digs in 5 minutes can measure progress * Sometimes will have to omit a drill or do it later. Make adjustments as necessary IX. Weight Training 1.
