Following receipt of the recommendation to undertake a review of the bridge condition on December 2, 2009, a site inspection was undertaken that week to assess the condition of the sidewalks on the bridge. The sidewalk approaches had been previously ramped with asphalt which were showing some signs of deterioration. The City's Operations Division in Works & Transportation restored the surface of the sidewalk approaches by reinstating the asphalt ramps in early December No further action is required at this time. 2 Flower City Brampton brampton.ca Fl-2 Corporate Services November 26, 2009 Ms. Susan Thomas Via Department Revised Dec 2, to redirect the request outlined in Clause 2 of the subject recommendation to the Manager of Infrastructure Planning, Works and Transportation The following recommendation from the Brampton Safety Council Meeting of November 5, 2009 was approved by Committee of Council on November 18, 2009 and by the Council of The Corporation of the City of Brampton on November 25, 2009: SC That the site inspection report dated October 6, 2009, to the Brampton Safety Council Meeting of November 5, 2009, re: Sandalwood Parkway - Bridge between Conestoga Drive and Sunforest Drive - Ward 2 - Review of Walking Route to Somerset Drive Public School - 50 Somerset Drive (File G25SA) be received as amended to indicate that the School Principal is now Ms. Julia Breen; and, 2. That the Manager of Infrastructure Planning, Works and Transportation, be requested to undertake a review of the condition of the subject bridge; and, 3. That the Principal of Somerset Drive Public School be requested, through such means as the school newsletter, etc., to reinforce safety rules relating to walking to school; and, 4. That in light of the observations made during the site inspection, it is the position of the Brampton Safety Council that: a) The subject bridge was appropriate for pedestrians utilizing it; and. b) No further action on this matter is required by the Brampton Safety Council as students who would be utilizing the subject bridge are receiving courtesy busing. A copy of the subject site inspection report is attached for reference. Citizen Member, Trustee Linda Zanella, Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board and Ms. Violet Skirten, Crossing Guard Supervisor, Works and Transportation Observations: 1. Sandalwood Parkway is a paved 4 lane road running in an east/west direction with a 60 km/h speed limit. 2. The subject bridge is located on Sandalwood Parkway between Conestoga Drive and Sunforest Drive and is over a waterway which runs in a north/south direction. 3. There is an island on Sandalwood Parkway separating eastbound and westbound traffic. 4. The traffic on Sandalwood Parkway was heavy but the drivers appeared to be observing the speed limit. 5. The sidewalk over the bridge was observed to be: a) cement construction b) the surface was flaking, broken in sections and had been patched causing an uneven surface c) the jointswhere the bridge sidewalk joins the city sidewalks are uneven causing a potential trip hazard d) the width of the bridge sidewalk from the edge of the roadway to the guardrail is lvz feet

5 R-S 6. No students were observed using the bridge during the site inspection. Note: Subsequent to the request to the Brampton Safety Councilfor a reviewof the walking route, including the bridge, the Peel District School Board advised that the students who would have utilized the walking route were given courtesy seating on student transportation buses. Recommendations: 1. That the site inspection report be received; and, 2. That the Manager of Infrastructure Planning, Works and Transportation, be requested to undertake a review the condition ofthe subject bridge; and, 3. That the Principal of Somerset Drive Public School be requested, through such means as the school newsletter, etc., to reinforce safety rules relating to walking to school; and, 4.
