2 FHW President s Remarks. We just finished our event at the Fairland Athletic complex and Ice Rink on Sunday April 29. We had 80 participants which was good considering a Sunday only event with windy chilly weather. We had all positive comments on the event, especially on the trails and how well they were marked. Thanks to Mike and Rita Goerling for organizing this event and all who helped. The popcorn was good Linda. A few notes on the Atlantic Region Conference held over March 16 18, Mary and I had a real good time, and I think everyone else did as well. They had 489 participants over the three days, and interestingly there were more Maryland participants than any other state in the region. The workshop and region meetings presented some very useful information. In the workshop we went over virtual online programs, and more specifically the 401(K) program. I learned that only kilometers entered manually as activities count towards the program and T-shirt, so I had to go back two months and update my entries. Even though you can set up your activity tracker, Fitbit or Garman, to sync kilometers and steps across, they didn t count. For those participating, a message was sent out this week, to go to and update your T-shirt size and address, so starting July you can get the shirt you earned. Also those entered in the 401(K) program are automatically entered in a Tour of Italy, which started May 1 st and tracks you on a tour of Italy based on your kilometers walked. In the regional meeting, Mike Green presented the application a free online route mapping service. Mike plotted the route used in the botanical gardens during the conference as a demo. This will be useful for all YRE POCs and event POCs to make our maps. Mike also has other tools available on his AR webpage at the following link: Our next scheduled event is October 6 th at Darnall's Chance House Museum in Upper Marlboro. This is a chance to Get your U for the A-Z program. You ll also have a chance to tour the museum. Thanks to Pam Potter for the idea and organizing this event. We will also be back in Savage for our New Years events, for among other reasons it s much less expensive. Here s some information from the MVA meeting held April 24 th. The AVA received $72,711 from the Big Give. While that seems like a lot, it just helps to keep the AVA afloat. Thanks to all who contributed, including Freestate s donation of $500 towards IT support. The AVA has a new youth participation waiver form that must be filled out for any participant under the age of 18 and signed by an adult at traditional events. The waiver addresses both safety and being photographed. This is a mandatory requirement. While a sign of the times, when filing copies in the event box at Fairland, I found we already had a place for the youth waiver with an old version in it. Also coming is something affecting YREs/SEs. You will not be required to put your address in the log book anymore, since that information is available to the public. You still must have your address on the start card, which is your waiver, but that gets mailed in. YRE POCs, please cross off the ask for address on the registration sheets when you service your walk boxes next. We ll try to get a new registration form for next year. Next year we will have freedom to put in our own wording on event stamps when sanctioning in the ESR area of the AVA website. ESR: Electronic Sanctioning Request. POCs think of what you want to say to better describe your events. While we re on the new stamps, POCs check your stamp pads. It was mentioned they work best with new felt ink pads. Like most costs of doing business, these expenses are reimbursable. As we enter summer and warm weather, remember to use sunscreen or as I heard on the radio physical blockers such as long sleeves and pants, which can also help against ticks. 2

3 Please join us for our Club Business meetings on the second Thursday of each month at the Savage United Methodist Church Faith Center, where you can have a say in what we do, and enjoy some good refreshments. The Club meeting starts at 7:30 pm. We are still looking for an events committee chair and checkpoint coordinator. No experience necessary. We are holding elections of officers at our May meeting and since most of us have been serving for quite a few years now, we welcome new experience. FHW is always looking for some new volunteers who would like to help the club with our various committees. Most volunteers for the committees and YREs have been in their positions for years, and some help with multiple jobs. These positions only take a couple hours a month if that long, and we d love some fresh ideas and talent to help support our club. Please contact any POC or club officer if you can help us out. Thanks to all our many volunteers, without whom we couldn t do all that we do. Freestate is a little different in that we look beyond just walking events, and actively promote the social aspect, whether it s an educational side trip or the chance to catch up with our walking friends over some good food. FHW is committed to Fun, Fitness and Friendship and welcomes everyone. Thank you, and see you on the trail. Bob Wolf The AVA Big Give Raised $72,711 -Your Freestate Club donated $500.and many club members donated and some donated twice! If you enjoy this sport activity, and you missed this year donating, please think about adding the Big Give to your charities list next year. THEME: Sea Witch Festival with parades, activities, and Treasure Hunt. SPECIAL PROGRAMS: Alternative Capitals, Honoring Our Flag, Lakes and Reservoirs, Trekking With the Trees, Water Towers, and Walking the USA A-Z. and Boardwalks. SPECIALITY SALES Several club members have inquired about club shirts and other type of clothing with the club logo. We have ordered club shirts over the years but the hassle (ha ha) of the ordering and everyone wanting a different color is a lot of work and time. After some brainstorming and the way to please everyone is for you purchase a club patch and sew it on a shirt that you like. Your size and any color that you like. A patch can be sewed on jackets and hats etc. and the patches are sold at events or if you come to a club meeting and let us know we can bring a few. The patches are $4.50 Thanks to Joyce Conway and Ann Hensler for working the Sales Table and Checkpoint at the Fairlands event. Freestate took in $97 which includes the sales of IVV books. Thanks to Linda Hassell for bringing the free popcorn for the walker and workers. The popcorn kept walkers in the room to socialize and share their walking trails stories and maybe buy specialty items from Freestate. PUBLICITY - Barbara Esker reported On April 21 st, I participated in the Severna Park Earth Day festival. There were numerous vendors and representatives from various non-profit organizations promoting earth friendly activities and products. I was there to spread the word on volksmarching. I gave out informational packages and numerous brochures of upcoming events; I spoke with attendees about the pleasures and benefits of participating in volksmarches. The children really enjoyed the free candy and the awards (medals, pins & patches) they got to pick out of the hat. It was a wonderful way to spend a few hours on a bright and mild day. Thank you Barbara. MEMBERSHIP June the membership renewals will be sent to club members if your membership time is near. Freestate s event was on Sunday, April 29, 2018 at the Fairland Sports & Aquatics Complex, in Beltsville. Was a great time sold 6 new walker packages and was really an enjoyable time with walkers and friends. 5

The historic Algonquian-speaking American Indian tribe was the Mattawoman (likely a band of the Piscataway Indians) encountered by the first English settlers; the latter called the land, "Indian Head", meaning " Indian Peninsula." In August 1861 Union Brigadier General Joseph Hooker commanded the Third Brigade nearby. The site was also used by the Union Army Balloon Corps for reconnaissance of Confederate troop movements across the Potomac. Since 1890 it has been the site of a U.S. naval base specializing in gun and rocket propellants. During WW II, a German POW camp was established a few miles from Indian Head in Nanjemoy, Maryland. Today Indian Head is home to Charles Countys largest employer, the Indian Head Naval Support Facility. This walk includes a wonderful vista of Mattawoman Creek on the other side of Cornwallis Neck from Chapman State Park. Description: Indian Head is an incorporated city on a peninsula named Cornwallis Neck in Charles County, Maryland. The peninsula, a "head" of land, had been long occupied by various cultures of indigenous peoples. Host Club: Freestate Happy Wanderers Susan DeHetre (301) Contact: SusanDeHetre@aol.com 6
