2 FHW President s Remarks. We ve gone three months again since our last newsletter, and hope to get back on track after this one. We had a couple activities, thanks to Phill Wilder s efforts, and a couple group walks since our last newsletter. The first activity/group event was our annual 9/11 walk. Despite a short start window, we had 35 participants walk in Laurel. As usual Phill put out the commemorative signs. Darrell, Mary and I walked with a local woman who organizes a charity run in Laurel. The nice thing about her event is that she has a permanent 5K route laid out marked by blue road signs. This is available for anyone who wants a measured route in Laurel. Congratulations to Klaus and Gale Waibel, who bought some cheaper by the dozen coupons, and promptly completed our I Walked Them All this summer. Their patches were presented on September 11 at the event. On September 26, we had 14 Road Scholars walk Frederick for the third Road Scholar event this year. That program has been a good success, and propelled the Frederick YRE way ahead of the others for participation this year. The good thing is that Frederick is FHW s YRE. We also had two group walks of the Baltimore Walking Club s events. On August 13, we advertised a group walk in Bel Air with their BBQ bash afterwards. They have a nice farmers market in Bel Air, and Mary and I were able to get some produce and baked goods before walking. The problem with this event was that it was about 100 degrees that day, so like most; we did a short trail and drank lots of water. On October 15, we did a group walk at Havre de Grace. This time the weather was perfect, and we were treated to an Oktoberfest afterwards. They had a farmers market in the morning that was replaced by the Oktoberfest in the afternoon. While I mention Oktoberfests, the MVA s newest club, the Antietam Pathfinders, held their first event on August 28 in Hagerstown and had 80 participants. Thanks to all who supported them. Next year they plan to have a YRE through the Antietam Battlefield, starting from a nearby member s house. Upcoming, FHW has some social events and our main events of the year. For our December club meeting on December 8, join us for sandwiches and pot luck salads and desserts. We usually have a limited business meeting, mostly getting ready for our upcoming New Years events. Look for a change to our New Years events next year, since the Owen Brown center is not available on January 1 st due to a church service having it booked. We will hold the events at the Savage Methodist church where we have our club meetings. On December 31, we ll hold the events out of the church building, where we held an event Memorial Day weekend a couple years ago. On January 1, we ll be across the street in the Faith Ministry building where we hold our club meetings. We ll need your help again, but also need you be flexible regarding where you can help when volunteering. We may need you to fill in where needed during your time slot. We will have food and baked goods again, but mostly sandwiches instead of soup. Also we will again be collecting non-perishable food for a local food bank. In January we ll again have our celebration dinner to socialize and honor the hard work of everyone s volunteer efforts this past year. We plan to return back to Romilos restaurant in Severna Park, MD, where we were last year, on January 15 th. Next year we have sanctioned events at the Montpelier Herb, Tea and Arts festival on April 29 and Kinder Farm Park on June 3 rd. Then it ll be on to the AVA convention in Billings for some of you. This year Tom Mosely plans to attend and represent us as a club officer. Thanks Tom. 2
3 Please note on December 3, at the Alexandria Scottish Parade event, the Washington DC club will open the event to all for free credit. In the Spring, they are also planning a two day event at Great Falls Maryland one day and Virginia the next. They do need volunteers and would like anyone interested to contact Susan Cahill by December. Also note that the Ellicott City YRE is open with the old trail again. In October the club approved a $300 donation to the United Methodist Church in Savage. Please join us for our Club Business meetings at 7:30pm the second Thursday of each month at the Savage United Methodist Church, where you can have a say in what we do, and enjoy some good refreshments. Please also attend our Events meeting at 6:30pm the first Thursday of the month at the Route 1 Laurel Town Center Panera Bread (NOTE: NEW LOCATION) for dinner and discussion, where you can help us with the direction of our events and activities. FHW is always looking for some new volunteers who would like to help the club with our various committees. Most volunteers for the committees and YREs have been in their positions for years, and some help with multiple jobs. These positions only take a couple hours a month if that long, and we d love some fresh ideas and talent to help support our club. Please contact any POC or club officer if you can help us out. Thanks to all our many volunteers, without whom we couldn t do all that we do. Freestate is a little different in that we look beyond just walking events, and actively promote the social aspect, whether it s an educational side trip or the chance to catch up with our walking friends over some good food. FHW is committed to Fun, Fitness and Friendship and welcomes everyone. Thank you, and see you on the trail. 4 NEW YEAR S WORKERS/VOLUNTEERS NEEDED It s that time of year when we are looking for volunteers to work at our New Year Events in Savage this year. A sign-up list will be sent via the INTERNET in November for members and friends to volunteer. If you are not on the INTERNET and would like to volunteer call Bill or Linda Hassell at The list will be circulated at the November and December meetings. Kitchen help is also appreciated. Please be sure to bring baked-goods for sale for the walks on 12/31 and 1/1/17. This is a great way to get rid of the holiday cookies and candies.
