1 Newsletter of the Columbia Volksmarch Club June 2011 President s Column By Dye Our first event in our Summer Series, s in the Parks is coming up soon. It fact, it is Saturday June 11. The walk will feature Howard County Recreations & Parks Western Regional Park. The start point will be at The Gary J. Arthur Community Center at Glenwood. It is a true community facility built to serve the growing population in the western part of the county. Located within Western Regional Park, the facility is shared by the Departments of Recreation & Parks, Health, and Police as well as the Office on Aging. Features include a fitness room, commercial kitchen, double gymnasium, pre-school classrooms, multi-purpose rooms, senior activity room, and so much more. In addition to the park the Howard County Library Glenwood Branch is also at this location. The 5km trail will be on hard surface trails within Western Regional Park. It will pass the many multipurpose fields and softball fields. It will also pass the many shelters which are currently under construction in the Park. The 10km trail will include all of the 5km trail and cross Carrs Mill Road and circle the Department of Education c o m p l e x w h i c h h o u s e s b o t h Glenwood Middle School and Bushy Park Elementary School. Parts of this portion will be on grass. The 10km will also be on natural and grass trails within the Park. Hopefully you can make it. If for no other reason than to see that your Howard County tax dollars are hard at work to provide us all many useful services. Volunteer Coordinator Needed!! By Karen Dye The Columbia Volksmarch Club is in need of a volunteer coordinator. We are looking for someone interested in performing work at no pay with extremely little recognition. The dope who volunteers to do this would be asked to coerce the membership to volunteer their time to man the start/ finish and checkpoints at club events, usually five a year. For further details or to show interest, please contact Karen Dye at karendye@comcast.net or LOOKING UP THE TRAIL TO THE MONTH AHEAD Hit-or-miss impressions/recommendations Dye WARNING: Use at your own risk!! June 2011 In winter I get up at night And dress by yellow candle-light. In summer quite the other way I have to go to bed by day. ~Robert Louis Stevenson Enjoy the following: (For current information or more details, I always check new_walklist.php (AR Calendar) or Saturday June 4 Beltsville, MD on the Natural trails on the Beltsville Agriculture Research Center (BARC) Campus with several rugged areas and on paved sidewalks and trails in nearby communities. 4 Newsletter of the Columbia Volksmarch Club June 2011 Continued from Page 3 Obey posted rules, including speed limits, on multi-use trails. There s no easier way to ruin the moment than to have an accident. Yield to Signal turns. walkers. Here are some tips for your safety and for being courteous to and respectful of others with whom you share the way. For ers Don t walk in the road when there is a safer alternative, such as a parallel sidewalk or multi-use trail. Face traffic. Don t jaywalk others may be caught unaware when you unexpectedly break the law. Watch your step. There are tree snakes, rock goblins, cracked sidewalks, puddles, and other perils just itching to make you fall or get you dirty. When stepping off or up curbs, pay heed they are not all the same height. Mind walking sticks. Keep them in your personal space. Don t flail them about. Key an eye on children. They are less aware of good safety practices. Parents, use your walks to teach safety. ing the dog? The more people around especially children, runners, and cyclists the shorter the leash. Don t block traffic when pausing to take a picture. Move aside. Greet others whom you encounter. (Remember, fun, fitness, and friendship.) Warn others audibly when approaching to pass from the rear, whether or not the route is crowded. (ers ahead could unexpectedly move into your path.) Pass walkers with care give them space; slow down. For All Participants Obey applicable traffic laws they apply to everyone on the road. Share multi-use trails everyone has a right to use them. Look before turning, especially into other traffic. Use marked crossings carefully. Don t assume motorists will yield verify. On narrow ways, don t spread out, and hog the route and overflow into others traffic paths. Yield to faster participants; let them pass to the left (right on streets). Don t stop in the middle of the route, lest others run into you. As you slow down ease to the side. Move off the route when stopped. Don t impede others. For Motorists Obey traffic laws. Be alert for participants near the start, in the parking lot, and wherever you share the road. Have ideas you want to share with fellow TAW readers? Additional rules for a follow-up column? Send them to me at Cardston Place, Leesb u r g, V A o r rwright2@jhu.edu. For Cyclists Ride with traffic. Don t ride on sidewalks where it is against the law. (I have a soft spot when young children are concerned they may not be able to handle being close to traffic.) Slow down whenever you re in close proximity to participants. Yield at marked crossings. Think safety first. That way everyone will enjoy their IVV events. Don t forget to Recycle! 5 Newsletter of the Columbia Volksmarch Club June 2011 That is a decrease of 7,371 walkers between these two years. AVA nationally had 9,649 less participants. That Region / - means that 76% of the reduction of South 9,269 8, walkers nationally were from the Atlantic Central Region. Check out the hottest website on the internet. Atlantic Region Members Receive AVA Award Joan Lampart (Quakertown, PA) Bob Schmick (Severna Park, MD) Both received the AVA Meritorious Service Award which is bestowed upon individuals who have given at least five years of outstanding service to the AVA. CONGRATULATIONS to both of you!! I know that since I assumed the office of Atlantic Regional Director that many individuals have informed me that their clubs average participation has dropped by 15 to 50 walkers per event. We need to make a conscientious effort to reach out to the public and inform them of our events. We need to have all events advertised in local newspapers and radio stations, flyers posted on the windows of every store in town, personally invite everybody we know to come to our event, go to our friends home to pick them up and take them to the walk, and insure all former walkers know we are having a walk. A slow gain of even five walkers at each event will start a reverse in the trend which has shoved the Atlantic Region in being recognized the region who has loss the most participants recently. National cannot increase the number of walkers at each of our events. This falls on the shoulders of each and every volksmarcher. Good luck with increasing your clubs participation rate.
