1 Newsletter of the Columbia Volksmarch Club May 2011 President s Column By Dye See you on the trail! Our first event of the year, the big Spring walk, has come and gone. Also, it was our first of the year in partnership with Howard County Recreation and Parks. Thanks to them we had a first-rate start point at the Roger Carter Recreation Center in downtown Ellicott City. Once again Trailmaster Tony did an outstanding job showing off both Ellicott City and Oella. Of course, it doesn t happen without the volunteer efforts of lotsa fine folk. Look for you names elsewhere in this newsletter. If your name isn t there, despair not. We will give you the opportunity during our Summer Series to achieve the high h o n o r o f O f f i c i a l P a t h w a y Recognition. And the numbers were good. Almost a hundred and a half participated. The details should also be contained in this newsletter. You know, of course, our Summer Series is title s in the Parks ; all three of which will be in Howard County Parks: (June 11 in Western Regional Park; July 9 in Schooley Mill Park and August 6 in Rockburn Branch Park.). And our Fall walk will be the first Saturday in November starting in the Howard County side of Patapsco State Park. A special thanks to our good friend and Freestate Trailmaster, Bill Brabant. He recently walked the Hickory Ridge YRE, which goes through the Howard Community College. I thought major construction was nearly done. HCC just started work at the main entrance for a new Health Science Building. Bill found out and report back that our current route was in the construction zone and not passable. Fortunately it was not an extremely difficult alteration. We are looking for someone interested in performing work at no pay with extremely little recognition. The dope who volunteers to do this would be asked to coerce the membership to volunteer their time to man the start/ finish and checkpoints at club events, usually five a year. 4 Are you hooked on volkssports? I am, and why not? They are habit forming in a good way. What got me addicted could do the same for you (if it hasn t already). Fun to Do The fun made them addictive for me seeing new places, learning more about what I see, and meeting new people, all with no special equipment and little cost. As another avid volkssporter (initials NS) says, Volksmarching is taking a different path, going somewhere new, enjoying the unknown and the unexpected every now and then. The ease of volkssports made it fun too. What could be easier than putting one foot in front of the other subconsciously, leaving your mind time to think, wander, and have fun? Not having enough fun yet? Get into the people and places around you on IVV events. Good for You The documented health benefits of walking are numerous (see sidebar). Who could blame anyone for choosing such a healthy habit? I didn t start volkssporting for the health benefits, but I reason those have kept me coming back for 35+ years. If you know what s good for you, you ll make volkssporting a good habit too. Rewarding Too The rewards of more years to your life and more life to those years are significant in and of themselves. Not bad for having a healthy habit. And IVV Volkssport Achievement Awards are a great reward for recurring volkssport participation. I m not aware of a more far-reaching and robust awards program anywhere. Getting High ers can achieve the same high as runners. That s because endorphins Newsletter of the Columbia Volksmarch Club May 2011 Tips for Volkssporters are released during various forms of activity. Though running is often Warning: Volkssports Are Addictive cited, I ve experienced the same feeling during my volkswalks. Robert C. Wright, 2011 Haven t experienced it yet? Try walking a little farther and faster. That could trigger the endorphins. Caution: Some believe runner s high comes from prolonged strenuous exercise, in other words too much of a good thing. Don t you overdo it. Habit Forming The pursuit of IVV Volkssport Achievement Awards keeps many going, like me. One more event; one more IVV certification stamp. Each one puts you one step closer to your next recognition. For meticulous record keepers, the IVV program provides convenient structure. You or a walking friend hasn t caught the fever yet? Participate in IVV events regularly for a while. Keep IVV books if you don t have them, the New er s Packet with IVV event and distance books, and coupons for free IVV credit at 3 AVAsanctioned events, a $19 value, costs only $5. (If you have them, but your friends don t, gift them a New er Packet the $5 investment is worth the rewards.) See if this changes your outlook. Volkssports are an addiction I ve very happily lived with since For another avid volkssporter, initials LC, her disease began with her second volkssport event almost 15 years ago! I hope you are (or soon will be) addicted too! Have ideas you want to share with fellow TAW readers? Send them to me at Cardston Place, Leesburg, VA or rwright2@jhu.edu. Thanks!) A Message from the President of the Piedmont Pacers By Jerry Baugher (with input from Chuck Merkel) Spring has sprung, so I hope you have stepped up your walking and taken advantage of some of the great walks that have already past. I hope you were one of the 115 walkers that took advantage of the Pacers first ever Westminster Breakfast held on April 2 and didn t let the fret of a few little showers keep you away. Many walkers took in the fantastic all you could eat breakfast at the Ascension Episcopal Church which was the start point for the walk. One walker was heard to express their pleasure of the breakfast and stated this was just great to have the walk in conjunction with the breakfast and we should do it again. When informed the church held the breakfast the 1st Saturday of every month one walker suggested that we "have a walk every month there". It is always great to see and visit with friends at these special weekend events and we would like to thank the Ascension Episcopal Church for allowing us to host this very special event. Hopefully, we can do it again sometime in the future. We would like to take this opportunity to thank the volunteers who donated their time to make this event a suc- CVC is a Member of the Maryland Volkssport Association page 4

This month I would like to highlight and highly recommend our YRE in Frederick, MD. As long time walkers know, the Frederick YRE is one of the premier town walks in the country. So much history has passed in the town of Frederick, and now Frederick has opened their brand new much enlarged Visitor Center which serves as our start point. Take time during your next visit to the Frederick YRE to take in the exhibits and 15 minute movie at the new Visitor s Center. Start time has also increased a half hour. The Visitor Center is now open 9:00 am to 5:30 PM daily seven days a week. Directions to the new Visitor Center along with parking information are as follows: From the East/West: via I-70, take Exit 54 north and go in direction of Downtown Frederick. Through the round-about and just past the traffic light at E. South St., the Visitor Center will be on the left, approx. 0.5 miles from I-70. Parking at the Visitor s Center is very limited so please pass the center by, pass Commerce St. and then turn left onto East All Saints St. and park in the parking garage a short distance ahead on the right. Take your parking ticket with you, return to the Visitor s Center to register for the walk and have your parking ticket validated for 3 hours of free parking (M-F) if you are not a resident of Frederick County. Weekend Parking in the garage on Saturday is $1 for all day, and parking on Sunday is $1 after 2 o clock pm, or you can park free all day on Sunday on the street at the meters. START BOX is located inside the Visitor Center at the counter. Ask an attendant. As you can see we are pretty excited about our new start location. The walk laid out by our illustrious Trailmaster, Chuck Merkel, certainly ranks as one of the best town walks anywhere in the country going past so much history along with a few surprises that you just don t expect on a town walk, like one of the oldest and largest ginkgo trees in the U.S. with a circumference of nearly 14 feet and a height of 93 feet and a spread of 92 feet. This particular tree sprouted around 1827, just a few short decades, I mean a century, before Chuck was born. Chuck is currently recuperating from his recent hip replacement and we wish him a speedy recovery to enjoy walking pain free in the future. Another fellow Piedmont Pacer and long time volksmarcher, Gale, of Chambersburg, PA has been hospitalized and is being treated for cancer of the liver. We ask all to keep and Chuck in your thoughts and prayers. There was a discussion of the new trail rating system. Many members in attendance were unsure exactly how to implement or utilize the elevation requirement. Consensus indicated most were against the elevation requirement being included in the rating system. It was indicated that the rating system was poorly worded and AVA President Dennis Michele presented the AVA Meritorious Service Awards to eighteen (18) members of the Atlantic Region. Both Dennis and I indicated it is the responsibility of club officers to recognize the hard work and dedication to our great sport by submitting them for awards. I presented AVA Certificate of Service to twenty-two (22) Atlantic Region members. Ten (10) AVA Certificate of Appreciation were presented to different organizations which supported our local clubs. Wright conducted the election portion of the meeting and certified that clubs were represented either by attendance or by proxy. Sam Tollett was the only individual who had formally announced he was a candidate for the office of Atlantic Region Director. There was a call for nominations from the floor and no names were offered. Sam Tollett was selected to be the Atlantic Region Director for He will part of the National Executive Council XVII. He will assume office the day after the National Convention is over. I wish to thank all the clubs in the Atlantic Region for allowing me to serve for a second term. Assistance and backing from the clubs and the membership is essential for me to successfully represent the Atlantic Region. Please remember that I will attempt to support the direction tendered by our clubs and membership, but my role and responsibility is to make decisions which are in the best interest of the American Volkssport Association. 8 AVA TRAIL/ROUTE RATING SYSTEM The event brochure including the AVA electronic event listing (ing Events Event Details) must identify a trail rating for all events except swimming, boating and skating events. In addition, any route obstacles or special conditions must be explained to describe the level of difficulty of the event. Although any rating system is somewhat subjective the two-part numerical/alpha rating system will give event organizers a reliable tool so participants have an idea about what to expect on a route whether it is for walking, biking, cross-country skiing, or snowshoeing. They need to know about major elevation gains, heavy traffic, narrow road shoulders, construction detours, roaming dogs, cattle guards, and the like on the route. Also, this is a safety issue since an improperly/underrated event could have serious consequences for someone who is not physically prepared for more strenuous route conditions. The sponsoring club will decide this rating based on the scale given below. The Regional Director should work with chartered clubs to achieve uniformity in the assignment of all trail ratings. Part 1 INCLINE 1. Very small hills or very little stair climbing. Probably suitable for strollers and wheelchairs. Elevation gain from Starting Point: up to 500 feet. 2. Some moderate hills and stair climbing. Probably suitable for strollers. May not be suitable for wheelchairs. Elevation gain from Starting Point: feet. 3. Some significant hill or stair climbing. Not suitable for strollers or wheelchairs. Elevation gain from Starting Point: feet. 4. Lots of significant hills or stair climbing. Elevation gain from Starting Point: feet. 5. Many steep hills. Elevation gain from Starting Point: more than feet. Part 2 - TERRAIN A. Almost entirely on pavement. Probably suitable for strollers and Wheelchairs. B. A significant part of the route is on well-groomed trails with very few obstacles. Probably suitable for strollers but may not be suitable for wheelchairs. C. A significant part of the route is on somewhat difficult terrain (rocky/ rooted paths or soft sand). Not suitable for strollers and wheelchairs. D. A significant part of the route is on very difficult terrain. E. The majority of the route is on very difficult terrain. Examples: A route that is mostly on flat pavement would be rated 1A. A beach walk would be rated 1C. A route with moderate hills on well groomed trails would be rated 2B.
