1 Joint Newsletter of the Columbia and the Piedmont Pacers Volksmarch Clubs April 2012 CVC PATHWAYS CVC President s Column By John Dye Our first walk of the year will start in Meadowbrook Park. Thanks to Howard County Recreations and P a r k s. I t s e a s y t o g e t t o Meadowbrook Park. It s at the intersection of Route 100 and Route 29. It s the first exit on Route 100 if you are coming off Route 29 and the last exit on Route 100, Exit 1, Long Gate Parkway. The start is in the pavilion on top of the hill behind the Meadowbrook Athletic Complex (MAC). The walk will circle Meadowbrook Park then venture out across Rt. 100 past Long Gate Shopping Center, The YMCA and go through some residential Ellicott City neighborhoods. For those who are worried that you forgot to volunteer and your whole life will be in shambles if you miss the opportunity, I think we can work you in albeit at great personal effort. Just give Karen a call ( ) or (karendye@comcast.net). Keep in mind the Columbia Volksmarch Club Year Round Events; Four registration points - Feet First, Kings Contrivance McDonalds, Starbucks at the Mall, Long Gate Sunoco; Six walks. The Ellicott City walk goes through downtown Ellicott City and up through Oella. It has the usual Ellicott City hills to get you into shape. The Centennial Lake trail still goes around the Lake but now goes into Centennial Estates and adds a 15km option that goes into the Preserve to see how the other half lives. The Kings Contrivance walk returns to the Patuxent Branch Trail. The Hickory Ridge walk still goes through the ever changing Howard Community College and then wanders out to the Patuxent Overlook. "#!$%&#!'(!)#*+,!-!./0*12+*,/&*34!56! 7/*&8534!790*+, I ve always wanted to walk Ocean City for a couple of years, but weddings and thunderstorms have prevented that walk for at least three years. But I got lucky and was finally able to walk the Boardwalk from the Bell to restrooms, and back -- end to end. It s certainly not a challenge like the hills and valleys of Carroll County trails and Pennsylvania s Strawberry Hill, but is certainly remarkable as a chilly fall walk complete with delicious salty winds, splashing surf, the aromas of French fries, hamburgers, pizzas, as well as the sight of goods in miscellaneous shops, boutiques, and jewelry stores. This year there are large pieces of equipment caterpillars, dredging sand back up toward the boardwalk. They work through the night, so sleep is sometimes impossible. So! Mission accomplished! I finally completed the 6 K in October 2011, but I believe there is another Ocean City Yes, there is a 12 K trail that makes a loop out along Synepuxent Bay and returns the entire length of the Boardwalk. Perhaps I can walk that one in the early spring! Two years ago, on a summer evening, I walked the Hanover 5 K through commercial and residential areas of Eastern and Northern Hanover including a walk around the Academy, and the walk by areas where President Lincoln stopped and talked to crowds in the City of Hanover back in the 1860s. In early December 2011, I walked the western side of Hanover, beginning on Pine Street at the Yesteryear Antique shop, and walking around to the Warehime-Myers Mansion on Baltimore Street. There is also a Botanical Garden up the alley by the mansion where, years, ago, a member of the Myers family transformed the Hanover Dump into a Botanical Garden, complete with various beautiful trees, all of which he labeled as he planted them. On the rear side of the mansion is a sign listing the dates and times you can schedule tours of the lovely mansion. After visiting the Mansion, the walk takes you up to the square, around the square and back out to Pine Street to the Yesteryear Start Point.
