1 Joint Newsletter of the Columbia and the Piedmont Pacers Volksmarch Clubs June 2012 CVC PATHWAYS CVC President s Column By John Dye The stats from our Meadowbrook walk, April 28 should be in this newsletter. It was a great day to walk and we had a good turnout. It was a little on the chilly side if you were sitting at the top of the hill in the parks & recs shelter. If you witnessed Karen wrapped in a blanket, you probably figured that out already. But our brave, intrepid volunteers were there again allowing you to participate in the sport you enjoy. Their names are also in this newsletter. That s about the extent of their payment Recognition in this world-renowned publication. T h a n k s t o H o w a r d C o u n t y Recreations and Parks, we will start our June event from Cedar Lane Park on Saturday June 16. As we have a Year Round Event that goes through Cedar Lane Park, we have been mindful of not duplicating trails. There is very little overlap with the YRE. It will be a fairly typical Columbia trail which uses the Columbia Association pathway system and sidewalks. Save the date. I think you will enjoy it. Our Annual Elections are in June. I know our current officers have been performing perfectly but we could probably make way for a takeover or some help of any kind. Give it a thought. See you on the trail! John CVC Officers John Dye (Pres): 6887 Garland Lane, Columbia, MD , Home Ph , johndye@comcast.net Paul Lubell (V-P): , e- mail: paul.lubell@verizon.net Rich Long (Treasurer/Editor): , rglongret@verizon.net Karen Dye (Sect y): , karendye@comcast.net The Position of Volunteer Cordinator is presently vacant. CVC ELECTIONS By John Dye Our Annual Elections will be held at our next meeting, Monday June 11. Our current elected officers are: President: John Dye Vice President: Paul Lubell Secretary: Karen Dye Treasurer: Rich Long Our additional officers are: Trailmaster: Tony Willoughby Newsletter Editor: Rich Long Volunteer Coordinator: Karen Dye We would welcome some fresh blood to the Executive Board. Two members have expressed the desire NOT to continue in their positions. Rich Long who has been doing the newsletter editing for a long, long time has stated he does not want to continue beyond this year. Karen took the Volunteer Coordinator position on a temporary basis but does not want to make it any more permanent than it already is. If you would like to discuss any issues with any office feel free to contact, any officer. Message from the President- Piedmont Pacers By Jerry Baugher On May 14, the Piedmont Pacers hosted a social and dinner meeting at J and P New York Restaurant in Westminster, MD that 15 members attended. This is our last formal meeting until September 10 since we typically have skipped meetings during the summer months. J & P Restaurant did a great job. We had a large private room for our dinner and meeting. Everyone enjoyed the meal and I think the only concern raised were that the portions were too large. Almost everyone took home part of their dinner for a second meal another day. Our main agenda items were to solicit new point of contacts for several of YREs since two of our members have had to cut back on their volunteer efforts for health reasons and to start planning traditional walk events for our 25 th Anniversary in We want to thank Ocie Sigley for serving as our point of contact for Westminster for the last several years and a huge HUGE THANKS for Chuck and Joanne Merkel s service over the last 25 years to the Piedmont Pacers serving many years as point of contact for our most popular year round events in Frederick and Thurmont and as trailmaster for most of our traditional events, preparing written instructions and brochures and advertising our events to local media. Because of health reasons Chuck has asked to take early retirement from his Continued on Page 2 CVC is a Member of both the American and Maryland Volkssport Associations page 1
