Program: Update on club happenings and report from nominating committee -Last Summer Fun Dinner Thirteen club members attended the Compass 2 (Thanks to Shirley Boyd for submitting this information.) 2014 Special Program Preview AVA has nine new special programs beginning in Each month, we ll preview one or two of these special programs in our newsletter! This month s special programs are: Trekking With the Trees Begins January 1, 2014 and ends December 31, This program promotes any event that has a 'theme' of trees. The criteria is to walk in a city with a tree type

3 name (Example: Forest Grove, CO), on streets with a tree name (Example: Ash Street/Oak Avenue), by an arboretum, or places such as the World Forestry Center. Individual trees with markers or plaques mentioning a tree name or historical interest will qualify. Parks that don't have a tree emphasis, tree/wood related businesses, such as lumber mills, tree nurseries, orchards or furniture stores do not qualify. Walk 20 different sanctioned events. Water Towers Begins January 1, 2014 and ends December 31, Walk events which pass a water tower. The water tower must be seen from the trail. No duplicate stamps and only one water tower per stamp. A water tower is an elevated structure supporting a water tank, constructed at a height sufficient to pressurize a water supply system. Water towers come in all sizes, shapes and are a large, elevated tank of water that can be used to express civic and /or school pride, humor, advertising and even can be functional as something other than water. Some are plain and some with the name of the city. Some come in interesting shapes such as a corn cob (Rochester, MN) or ketchup bottle (Collinsbille, IL). Many were constructed during the Industrial Revolution; some are now considered architectural landmarks and monuments and may not be demolished, while some are converted to apartments or exclusive penthouses. IVV-Asia will host an Asianpiad, Nov 1-3, 2014 in Higashi-Matsuyama, Saitama, Japan Olympiad in Chengdu, China, Sept 26-29, AVA News -Visit the AVA web site Atlantic Region Update - The Atlantic Region Weekend Events link( t.php) provides information on upcoming walks in the Atlantic Region and includes links to BROCHURES so you can get directions, see awards, etc. - The Maryland Volkssport Association created a very useful website ( for event data too. VVA Update -Seasonal Walks LAST CHANCE FOR THESE! Virginia Volkssport Association (VVA) seasonals run through Sept 30, These events all include the Crooked Road program, VA Cities and Counties, and other programs. The walks are: Clintwood Dickenson County; Wise Wise County; City of Norton; Jonesville Lee County; Gate City Scott County. 4 Virginia Vagabonds have four seasonal events which run through Dec 31, All qualify for the Civil War program. These events are: -Battle of Malvern Hill (Henrico County) -Battle of White Oak Swamp (Henrico County) -Battle of Gaines Mill (Hanover County); -Battle of Cold Harbor (Hanover County) Note that the registration point for Cold Harbor and Gaines Mill is only open from Thursdays through Sundays. Center and displays. Another walk is offered in Highlands, home of the Old Edwards Inn and voted a worldwide top travel destination. You will find upscale restaurants and shops in a high elevation rugged mountain setting. Travel Alert PLEASE CHECK THE AVA WEBSITE, FOR STARTING POINT CHANGES, BEFORE TRAVELING TO A YRE. - An Oktoberfest walk will be offered by the Loudoun Walking & Volkssport Club on Sept 28 in Lovettsville, VA, in conjunction with an Oktoberfest celebration. Great scenery, fun, German food, German music, and beer. What more could you ask for in an IVV walk? - Oct Western North Carolina. Asheville Amblers have a big Columbus Day Weekend planned. The registration point for all four walks (one Start Card for all) is also the Start/Finish for a walk in Franklin with its small town unique museums and downtown plus a greenway following the Little Tennessee River. Saturday only we will have our world famous Bratwurst platters. An hour north are 2 walks in Cherokee with its Indian Museum or Casino or Great Smoky Mtn National Park Welcome Compass 4 - Amtrak Trip to Alexandria, VA. Wednesday, Oct 16, Book your own Amtrak ticket at Amtrak.com. Train leaves Norfolk at 5 a.m., arriving Alexandria at 9:14 a.m. Volksmarch in Old Town Alexandria, have lunch, and depart Alexandria at 4:13 p.m., arriving in Norfolk at 8:50 p.m. Cost: $78 for train, round trip; $3 for walk registration; and lunch.
