We are proud to once again support the Breeze Walking Festival which is returning to Canterbury in September and October of Now in its sixth year, the Walking Festival has expanded to include Christchurch city and parts of the Selwyn and Waimakiriri districts. This year s festival will offer 54 walks that will appeal to those wanting to embrace nature, culture, the arts, history, and new developments around our city. The free walks include a range of easy, medium and challenging routes. Some will include activities which will cater for all interests, ages, and cultures, as well as walks which include dogs. All the walks have been designed to offer accessibility to participants of all abilities, including those using wheelchairs and buggies. The walking festival presents a great opportunity for all Cantabrians to explore their city and region, to discover new places, learn more about old haunts, try fun activities, and above all to enjoy a social outdoor experience. So let s get out and make the most of this year s festival, because after all, walking is for everyone! Best for children aged 5 to 10 years of age. 30 SEPT Burnside Park Fitness Trail Official Opening Time: 11.30am 1pm Meet: Outside the Burnside Squash Club, Burnside Park, Avonhead Road Approx distance: 3km Celebrate the completion of the Burnside Park Fitness Trail. Take a walk around the park and try out each station, with assistance from the experts. Lots of fun and a great way to enhance your exercise programme. Come enjoy local food, performance and be inspired to hold your own neighbourhood street party. A guided walk around and through the Avonside red zone with Avon-Ōtākaro Network. 5 MONDAY 02 Going on a Bear Hunt Time: 1pm 1.30pm, 2pm 2.30pm Meet: Walter Park Playground, Innes Road (parking on Hills Road), Mairehau Approx distance: 1km We re Going on a Bear Hunt! We re not scared! Bring the children down to the park for a swishy swashy, splashy sploshy, squelchy muddy, experience. Great outing for the younger walkers and their families. Gumboots essential. MONDAY 02 Sign of the Kiwi to the Bridle Path Time: 9.15am 3.15pm Meet: Sign of the Kiwi car park, Dyers Pass/Summit Road Intersection, Cashmere Approx distance: 10km lands Pegasus Wet Ashley Gorge Ryde Falls Spectacular, panoramic views of Lyttelton Harbour and Canterbury Plains are highlights of this walk. The undulating route along the crater rim traverses a rich mosaic of vegetation and volcanic landforms. Return transport provided. Suitable 12 years+. MONDAY 02 St Martins Reflections Time: 10am 11.30am Meet: Corner of Albert Terrace and Centaurus Road, St Martins Approx distance: 4km Learn about the history of the St Martins suburb and its personalities by walking around some significant sites including the Ōpāwaho-Heathcote River. 6 MONDAY 02 TUESDAY 03 Botanic Gardens Walk and Talk Time: 11am 12noon Meet: Christchurch Botanic Gardens Visitor Centre, Rolleston Avenue Approx distance: 1km An opportunity to meet with curators from Botanic Gardens to hear and ask about the plans for future planting, conservation, and the impacts of climate change. The Gumboot Stomp! Time: 10am 4pm Meet: Linwood College, 85 Aldwins Road, Linwood Approx distance: 3.5km Throw on your gummies, stubbies and chequered flanos! Meet at Linwood College and catch the bus with us to Spencer Park. We will be stomping through the beautiful Brooklands red zone and farm land. Fun challenges along the way some physical, some mental and even the odd edible challenge be ready to get messy! The walk will be on uneven terrain and possibly through mud. Take a break from your busy work day to learn about mindfulness and explore the joy of being present in such beautiful surroundings. TUESDAY 03 Rakaia Gorge Experience SELWYN Time: 10am 4pm Meet: Rakaia Gorge Bridge car park SH77 / Inland Scenic Route SH72 Approx distance: 11km A Department of Conservation guided walk providing magnificent views of the river and cliffs in the gorge and passing through forest, riverside scrub and regenerating bush. Optional: 30 minute Discovery Jet experience from the top (at cost), or walk back. Please bring lunch, snacks and plenty of water. Rain date Tuesday 10 October. 7 WEDNESDAY 04 Discovering Art in Linwood/ Woolston Time: 10am 11.30am Meet: Linwood Union Church, Corner Linwood Avenue and Tilford Street, Linwood Approx distance: 4km This walk will aim to discover graffiti/ art in the Linwood/Woolston area while strolling the Ōpāwaho-Heathcote River and surrounds. You will hear some local history and interesting facts along the way. WEDNESDAY 04 Port Hills by Night Time: 7.30pm 10pm Meet: Victoria Park Visitors Centre car park, Dyers Pass Road, Cashmere Approx distance: 5km An exciting night time exploration of the Port Hills above Christchurch. Bring head torches and a sense of adventure. Bookings required, limited to 18. emma.pavey@ccc.govt.nz or phone (03) WEDNESDAY 04 Gruffalo Explorer Time: Start anytime between 10am to 1pm, finish at 2pm Meet: Bottle Lake Forest Park Information Centre, Waitikiri Drive, off Prestons Road, Burwood Approx distance: 2.3km (routes take approx. 1 hour) Young walkers become mouse to explore the forest to meet all his friends including snake, fox, owl and the Gruffalo plus a few special NZ species. Enjoy storytelling and some special Gruffalo activities. A perfect outing for babies in mountain buggies, young walkers and their families. Rain date Thursday 5 October. THURSDAY 05 A Slice of Beckenham s History in the Loop Time: 1pm 2.30pm Meet: South Library, Colombo Street, Beckenham Approx distance: 4km The walk will trace some of Beckenham s history by walking the Beckenham Loop following the Ōpāwaho-Heathcote River. Find out about the Cashmere Sanatorium and the Old Iron Bridge amongst other landmarks. THURSDAY 05 What s happening in the East Frame? Time: 1pm 2.30pm Meet: Northeast Corner Lichfield and Manchester Streets Approx distance: 2km The East Frame will become the largest inner-city residential development in Christchurch. Construction has begun on the first apartments and townhouses and in the meantime, Gap Filler is overseeing a programme of activities and amenities to grow the community. 8 THURSDAY 05 Harts Creek Sneak SELWYN Time: 10am 12noon Meet: 31 Lower Lake Road, Leeston Approx distance: 2km One of the only places in New Zealand where you will see the muted swan. This walk is rich in birdlife so bring your binoculars and be prepared to take your time to view white swans, black swans, pukeko, Canada geese, several species of duck, white heron, pied stilts and more. 12 08 Wild Foods Foraging Time: 9am 12.30pm Meet: Naval Point, Lyttelton Approx distance: 8km Explore the coastal margins of Whakaraupō/Lyttleton Harbour, from Magazine Bay to Pony Point Reserve, with scientist and professional forager Peter Langlands. Identify and gather up to 50 edible species learning how to spot the poisonous plants and environmental hazards and chat about how the health of the environment and people are intimately connected. Finish with a cook-up for a taste of the wild. 08 Lyttelton s Antarctic Connections Time: 12.30pm 3pm Meet: Corner of London Street and Canterbury Street, Lyttelton Approx distance: 4.8km This walk will visit heritage sites around the port and town that are connected to the expeditions of Scott and Shackleton. TUESDAY 10 Discover Ōtukaikino Guided Walk Time: 10am 12noon Meet: The Ōtukaikino Reserve, Main North Road Approx distance: 1.2km loop track Discover how Ōtukaikino, a 13ha freshwater wetland reserve and wai tapu site, is being restored as a living memorial between the Department of Conservation and Lamb and Hayward Ltd. An accessible boardwalk loops around the wetland, with ducks, pukeko and interpretation panels to view plus pleasant places to sit along the way. Bring a picnic to enjoy after the walk. TUESDAY 10 Twilight River Bird Discovery Time: 6pm 8pm Meet: Ashley River Picnic Area, Ashley Bridge, Rangiora Approx distance: 2.5km WAIMAKARIRI Walk along the Ashley-Rakahuri riverbed to view the rare native birds that return to this braided river for the nesting season. The walk starts by following the Styx River and then joins the Kaputone Stream were you cross the bridge to discover the Maori Medicinal Gardens. WEDNESDAY 11 Taylors Mistake by Night Time: 7.30pm 10pm Meet: Taylors Mistake car park, Taylors Mistake Approx distance: 5km Bring a sense of adventure to explore Taylors Mistake by night. THURSDAY 12 Godley Head Time: 10am 2pm Meet: Taylors Mistake car park, Taylors Mistake Approx distance: 7km Passing Boulder Bay, the track climbs up to the headland and the historic Godley Head coastal defence battery for stunning views of the city and coastline. Find out about the historic military buildings including the Battery Observation posts located at the entrance to Lyttelton Harbour. Carry on high above Breeze Bay to enjoy sweeping views of Lyttelton Harbour and New Brighton before dropping back down to Taylors Mistake. THURSDAY 12 Kaiapoi River Ramble Time: 10am 12noon or 2pm Meet: Kaiapoi Library, Williams Street, Kaiapoi Approx distance: 5km WAIMAKARIRI An interesting walk looking at red zone areas and rebuilt areas. Enjoy views of farmland, Kaipoi river and the Waimakariri river confluence. Walkers will be greeted by local fishermen and birdlife as they stroll through this important wildlife breeding ground. THURSDAY 12 Nordic Walk Forest and Dunes Time: 5pm and 6.30pm Meet: Broadhaven Park, Bower Avenue, Parklands Approx distance: 3km Learn how to get a total body workout from Nordic walking with exercise poles. Breath-taking beech forests, undulating traverses and ridgeline clearings. Enjoy lunch with 360 mountain views at Picnic Rock before descending to Texas Flat for your ride back to the car park. This special Conservation Week Event will see families put themselves through a series of missions scattered around the Botanic Gardens and Hagley Park. Take a photo of your successful mission and upload it into the Wild Eyes community to earn a set of Wild Eyes.
