3 Chairman s Chatter Good Afternoon and welcome to this August Bank Holiday fixture against Feckenham. I would like to take the opportunity to welcome the players, officials and supporters of Feckenham and hope you enjoy your stay with us today. After Saturday s cup exploits away at Kenilworth Town we now turn our attentions back to the bread and butter of the league campaign where we must begin to get points on the board sooner rather than later. The club has undergone major changes over the summer months, and I know that short term pain will result in long term gain in the future. This club is now structured in the right way and all of our coaches at all levels now boast a minimum of an FA Level 2 qualification. It is important that people with the right qualifications are in the right positions at the club if we are to achieve our target of FA Chartered Standard status during this 2014/15 Midland Football League campaign. I have been delighted with our attendances thus far this season which saw 97 supporters attend our opening match with Fairfield Villa and 155 supporters witness the local derby against Sutton United. This gives us a current average of 126, by far the highest in our division and only behind Hinckley and Bromsgrove in the league above. Your support is vital to our success this season and the crowd really can be our twelfth man. I hope that there is another bumper crowd today and that the football on offer is entertaining and good to watch. The supporters are the future of this football club that will help us to return Paget back to where I truly feel we belong. I hope you all enjoy today s match and that whatever the result the game is played in the correct mannor with football the real winner. I look forward to seeing you all back here on Saturday when Hinckley United phoenix team, Leicester Road are our visitors. COME ON YOU BEARS! 4 Welcome today s opponents: FECKENHAM Feckenham Football Club was founded in 1881 and until 1999 had always played their home games in the village of Feckenham, near Redditch in Worcester. The club competed in the Redditch League from foundation and won the League title in when they progressed to the Worcester League. In this league the club won a number of League titles and several major knockout cups. In both and Feckenham won both the league and three cup competitions. In 1995 the club applied to join the Midland Combination and were accepted into Division Three, where they won the League title along with three other trophies, including the Smedley Crooke Cup. The following year they became Division Two champions and retained the Smedley Crooke Cup. Ground improvements enabled the club to contest First Division football and they were promoted to the Premier Division at the first attempt. In 1998 Feckenham took their place in the Premier Division. However, after playing in the Premier Division for a few seasons, Feckenham were forced into folding the first team & merged with the reserves in Division Two. After finishing as runners-up in Division Two in , Feckenham were promoted to Division One where they have played for the past three seasons. Last season they achieved their highest placed finish of 8th. Saturday August 16th 2014 Coventry United 3 Paget Rangers 2 Paget Rangers went down by the odd goal in five as they were undone by a Daniel Stokes hat-trick away at Coventry United. The Bears have now failed in four attempts to beat their promotion rivals from last season and now have only picked up one point from their three opening league matches. Paget, in their new light and dark blue away strip, faced a Coventry United side boosted by the midfield presence of the former Cameroon international Patrick Suffo. Attacking with a strong breeze behind them, Coventry had the first chance but Woodall fired over. After Paget s second corner in quick succession Danny Cullen saw his shot blocked. Coventry had to concede another corner after good work by Marcus Brown and then Suffo made his mark with a dangerous through ball that Arrowsmith cleared. Paget could have opened the scoring on 15 minutes but Haughton missed Brown s cross. Stokes and Stoute both had good chances for Coventry and Suffo shot over the bar from 25 yards as Coventry looked for the breakthrough. Maguire then had to tip a quickly taken free-kick over the bar after a foul by Carpenter. Cullen was then booked for a challenge in midfield as both teams struggled to dominate. After Brown had missed a good chance to give Paget the lead, Stokes opened the scoring on 43 minutes with a near post flick from Cox s free-kick. Half-time: Coventry United 1 Paget Rangers 0 Paget started the second half brightly and were unable to capitalise when Connor in the Coventry goal dropped the ball. Cox was causing problems down Coventry s right and Reid and Ashfall had to double up to stem the danger. However, Coventry doubled their lead on 58 minutes when Vallence cut inside from the opposite flank to set up Stokes who made no mistake from close range. A double substitution for Paget saw Bond and White replace Price and Haughton. This inspired the Bears who pulled a goal back on 63 minutes when Carpenter shot precisely into the corner of the Coventry goal having been set up by Fagg. Paget pressed forward for an equaliser and White forced a corner, and he and Brown combined well before Coventry cleared the danger. Brown then forced Connor into a spectacular save to preserve Coventry s lead before White equalised on 77 minutes with a deft back-header that looped over the Coventry keeper. However, Paget were level for only 3 minutes as Stokes scored his third and what turned out to be Coventry s winning goal in the 80th minute. Paget tried in vain for an equaliser with goalkeeper Maguire going up for one late corner. Paget were left to rue defensive lapses which gave Coventry the spoils after a fine effort to pull back the two-goal deficit. Attention now turns to the Presidents Cup game at another of last season s promotion rivals Kenilworth Town KH. Attendance: 60 three

6 Manager s Notes Good afternoon and let s hope it s a bright and sunny day for this bank holiday fixture. As a team we are growing in character our first few weeks have been a massive challenge as wholesale changes have been made from last season s squad. New coaching staff players and a change in playing philosophy have had in my opinion the required effect in non-football playing terms. Off the pitch we are a family again and a solid unit this will be transferred to our game as we improve our performances. We also have I believe on the most supportive and ambitious chairman in the MFL. He wants results and we must deliver. I would like to leave you with a quote that I think is perfect for our transition in the last few weeks. IF you can keep your head when all about you Are losing theirs and blaming it on you, If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you, But make allowance for their doubting too; If you can wait and not be tired by waiting, Or being lied about, don't deal in lies, Or being hated, don't give way to hating, And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise: If you can dream - and not make dreams your master; If you can think - and not make thoughts your aim; If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster And treat those two impostors just the same; If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools, Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken, And stoop and build 'em up with worn-out tools: If you can make one heap of all your winnings And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss, And lose, and start again at your beginnings And never breathe a word about your loss; If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew To serve your turn long after they are gone, And so hold on when there is nothing in you Except the Will which says to them: 'Hold on!' If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue, ' Or walk with Kings - nor lose the common touch, if neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you, If all men count with you, but none too much; If you can fill the unforgiving minute With sixty seconds' worth of distance run, Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it, And - which is more - you'll be a Man, my son! four Simon Says Pre Season is over and clubs have spruced up their ground, carried out any improvements and the club s manager has brought in new players where they see fit and fans are waiting excitedly for the first Saturday of the real season when results matter. Then as a fan you wake up and prepare for the game following your own rituals before leaving for the game be it over at Villa Park, The Hawthorns or down at The Trevor Brown Memorial Ground, excitedly paying your entrance fee or handing over your match ticket and then entering the cauldron of your team's ground. Fans the country over heading to the bar or snack bar for that pre-match refreshment and chatting with a fellow fan of the team you support or a visiting fan who once the match start you view as an enemy in your team's surroundings, but for now they are visitors to your second home. You discuss the last season, its ups its downs and forecast the coming season. Talk between fans might be about why the manager still has that striker who couldn t hit an empty net from an inch out but might, just might find the goal scoring form he had when he first came to your club 3 years previously. Then there is the new keeper who just has to be better than last year s incumbent who couldn t catch a cold if he tried. Among that is the speculation that the 18 year old just signed from your local pro clubs Under 18 academy might be the new star of the team and bright hope for the future of the club. If the player continues the goal scoring form he had in the summer months. You never know he might be the next striker to follow in the footsteps of Fred Smith, or whatever his name was who left the club to join the professional ranks twenty years prior. The next eight months will see where our dreams and hopes take us, will we be celebrating a cup win or a battle for relegation? That is what makes the life of a football fan so interesting so whatever your team here s hoping they give you entertaining football and make you keep attending your team's ground. Simon

7 Match Reports Paget Rangers 2 Sutton United 2 Tuesday August 12th Midland Football League Division 2 Paget Rangers once again fell foul of their inability to hold on a two-goal lead as they drew 2-2 with local rivals Sutton United. In front of an excellent crowd of 155, the two sides matched each other in an excellent advertisement for Step 7 football. Fielding a much changed defence and bringing in new signing Daniel Charlton, Paget were first on the score sheet after 7 minutes when the energetic Terry Carpenter fed Marcus Brown who made no mistake with a right-foot shot beyond Billy Spink in the Sutton goal. Sutton responded immediately with Joseph Lavill twice firing over when well placed. Lavill was then put clean through only to be flagged offside. Paget responded by forcing a corner but Cullen s shot was easily saved by Spink. Jack Skinner then lobbed Maguire in the Paget goal only to hit the bar and Paget s Morris wasted some good work by shooting well wide. Ashfall, Charlton and Brown combined to force a corner which Sutton cleared and Morris cleared a dangerous Sutton attack as both teams threatened to score as the first half drew to a close. Half-time Paget Rangers 1 Sutton United 0 Paget kicked off the second half attacking the clubhouse end but it was Sutton who had the first chance when the ball was fired across the Paget goal but no Sutton player was able to apply the finishing touch. Charlton then conceded a corner which Sutton s Lewis swung in forcing Maguire to punch clear. After Sutton had made two substitutions, Marcus Brown saw his header saved by Spink while Sutton s Ryan Simmonds made an immediate impact sending a header just wide of the Paget goal. However, Paget then extended their lead in the 71st minute when, after Carpenter s corner had ricocheted in the Sutton box, Cullen forced the ball home for his first Paget goal. Sutton pressed forward but Ashfall then wasted a good chance to extend Paget s lead when Spink saved at his feet. After a period of attack from both sides, Sutton pulled a goal back through substitute Sam Simmonds after 78 minutes. After the restart Sutton immediately pressed for the equaliser and scored when, after Morris had cleared off the line, Lavill shot home powerfully with 9 minutes to go. Both sides then went for the win in what became a very open game. Tuffour missed with a close range header for Paget whilst a dangerous Ryan Simmonds cross was missed by his team mate at the far post. Both sides can be pleased with a point but both probably feel they could have had all three. Attendance: 155 five

11 Paget Rangers in the Midland Alliance part 3. October 1st 1994 saw Paget s first match in the FA Vase. The FA Vase is a competition in which Paget have achieved little success, the best run being the season when the 4th round was reached only for the Bears to lose 1-0 at Wisbech Town. The draw for the Preliminary Round couldn t have handed Paget a harder tie having been drawn at home to near neighbours and current landlords Boldmere St. Michaels. The Mikes have the distinction of being the only club to have played in all 20 seasons of the Midland Alliance. No promotion, no relegation, and usually in the top half of the table. In fact last season was Boldmere s best, finishing 2nd behind Tividale, whose ground achieved the required grading and thus denied Boldmere a potential promotion. The Sutton Coldfield newspaper reported how two headed goals from Stuart Tucker saw Paget through to the next round of the FA Vase. Boldmere had begun well but Paget had the first real opening in the 18th minute when an Ian Paul header hit the post. Paget continued to take the game to Boldmere and Paul had a headed goal ruled out for offside. However, in the 42nd minute Paget took the lead when Paul s corner was headed home by Tucker. Paget continued to attack in the second half and Boldmere goalkeeper Richard Anstiss produced an excellent save when Tucker s 25-yard volley was deflected. After Boldmere s Cartwright had shot just wide following a counter attack, Paget doubled their lead on the 75th minute with a carbon copy of the first goal when Tucker headed home powerfully from a Perry Mulvey corner. Boldmere were not finished and two minutes later Bob Coy headed home from 18 yards out to halve the deficit and set up an exciting finale. In fact, the Mikes were unlucky not to equalise in the 83rd minute when Paul Casey s shot rolled just wide and SteveMcCartan missed a good chance to force extra time when he shot over the bar with just four minutes to go. Paget managed to hold on and secure their place in the 1st Round where they would face another Midland Alliance rival in the shape of Barwell. Before Paget could concentrate on the upcoming FA Cup match, Halesowen Harriers visited Coles Lane on the following Wednesday and inflicted a first defeat of the season on Paget. Goals from Danny Phillpotts and Charlie Blakemore secured the points for the Harriers as Paget drew a blank in front of goal for only the second time that season. The following Saturday Paget continued their FA Cup run when they visited old rivals Moor Green. This was the first time Paget had reached the third qualifying round of the FA Cup and therefore marked Paget s best ever run in the competition. Moor Green had been relegated from the Southern League Premier Division and were top of the Midland Division at the time of the Paget tie. They were to go on to finish 4th in the league and miss out on promotion back to the Premier Division. The monthly non-league football magazine Team Talk, which was published throughout much of the 1990 s, included the following report of Paget s game at Moor Green in their December 1994 issue. The Moor Green goal-machine went on with two first-half strikes putting them in control over their Midland Alliance visitors in this derby match. Adrian Baddams marked his return to action with a goal from 20 yards in the 26th minute, and Dave Fearon made it two from a Paul Frost flick. Paget rallied strongly and Ian Paul pulled one back on the hour and sensed an equaliser with Moors having used both subs and Paul Brogan limping about up front. Despite his injury, Brogan laid on the pass for Brian Agar to put Moors 3-1 up with ten minutes left and, two minutes later, the roles were reversed as Brogan made it four. So Paget bowed out of the FA Cup whilst Moor Green went on to draw 1-1 with isthmian League high fliers Aylesbury United in the fourth qualifying round before losing 3-1 at Aylesbury in the replay. Paget now embarked on a sequence of 6 successive home games across five different competitions. These will be discussed on the next home programme. nine
