NEWS & VIEWS Good evening everybody and welcome to The Coppice, the home of Highgate United FC. We d like to take this opportunity to welcome the Officials, Players and Supporters from today s visitors Dudley Sports. It s not very often our paths cross these days. Dudley Sports now plying their trade in the West Midlands Regional League. LAST TIME OUT We last played Dudley Sports in September 2011 when they were our opponents here in the FA Vase. It was a classic cup game, a goal from Steve Jackson and a brace from full-back Ben Judd had given the Gate a 3-0 lead, but with just 7 minutes remaining Sumner scored from the penalty spot and grabbed another quick goal for Dudley to ensure a real nailbiting finish for then manager Keith Checketts. LEST WE FORGET ( ) THAT S HALL FOLKS! At last weekend s Firework Display I finally managed to catch up with club captain Craig Hall and was saddened to hear that it looks like injury has forced Craig to seriously consider hanging his boots up. Sad news for both Craig and The Gate. On behalf of everyone here we wish you all the very best in whatever route your football life takes. The club would like to say Thank You to all friends and visitors both old and new who attended the Firework Display and Family Fun Night last Saturday night - it was a great night. We d also like to say a huge thanks to all the volunteers, without who none of it would have been possible. I m sure none of you need reminding that today is Remembrance Day. Due to Saturday s game being postponed the club wish to pay their respsect tonight so please note there will be a minutes silence before tonights kick off. 4 the gate

CAT WITH THE HATS JIMMERRYQUAI Good evening and welcome to todays visiting Officials Players and Supporters of Dudley Sports FC please enjoy your short visit to the Coppice, we also welcome our 3 Match Officials Hopefully the weather has been kind to us these last 2 days and we manage to get tonights match on. It s difficult to think that we ve had all that mild weather and then when the heavens opened on Friday and Saturday there were puddles of standing water on the pitch. I don t think many games went ahead in our league, although I did notice Villa scored three goals... haha calm down, I mean Pelsall Villa who got their first win, winning 3-1 at Alvis Sporting. I ve thoroughly enjoyed watching the FA Cup last weekend, to some it might seem a million years away, but with clubs like Norton from level 8 it shows its not impossible. it s a great incentive for clubs at our level, and hopefully with all the ground improvements continuing here, we ll hopefully be eligible to enter next years competition. With last Saturday s game called off and even though it s in the programme that was printed, this is our first opportunity to thank evertbody that came down to our annual Firework Display and Family Fun Night. It was a great night with well over 600 adults and kids enjoying the evening. I must also thank everybody who volunteered their time to help out that night, it wouldn t have been possible without you. Back to tonight - come on Ash get the lads going and keep the run on track, let s see if we can book a place in the Semi-Final to face either Stourport or Bromsgrove UP THE GATE 2014/15 5

HIGHGATEUNITED 2 RICHARDS, LACEY PILKINGTONXXX 1 BARNES SATURDAY 1 NOVEMBER 2014 MFL DIVISION 1 TOP OF THE GLASS Gates slim victory over a determined Pilkington XXX side was enough to send them to the top of the league. Two first half strikes proved enough to edge Highgate home at the end of this tense encounter, a Pilkington side belying their sixteenth position in the league table pushing Gate all the way but unable to add to their lone 71st minute goal. The win extends Gate s unbeaten league run to seven games, but on this occasion the victory came after a relatively poor display against a physically stronger team which played throughout to their own strengths up front, going close to snatching a last second equaliser with a header which grazed the outside of keeper Conor McCarthy s left hand post. Gate had gone into the match with the distinct disadvantage of knowing they had been named the Division One October team of the month, confounding the jinx that is so often attached to such an award but only after surviving a nervous final ten minutes. Caretaker boss Ashley Pulisciano was without centre half Dean Curtis, absent on paternity leave for which the Club sends congratulations on the new born s arrival, giving a full start to Jordan Duncan, whilst Danny Rolfe returned to the right back berth with Nathan Edgington back in midfield in place of Karl King, Luke Hinson, Michael Batchelor and Martin Crawford similarly unavailable. A scrappy opening period was a sign of what was to come, Craig Oldfield s early free kick for the visitors headed clear by Trevor Edwards, whilst at the other end Ricardo Richards was close to putting Connor Mooney clear before creating space for himself with a shot saved by keeper Reece Francis at the foot of the near post. Scott Turner took the sting out of Odane Barnes shot on the turn, Richards displaying a similar level of skill by shrugging off defender Phil Chesters challenge but only able to fire low into Francis hands. Barnes found himself clear and preparing for a one on one with McCarthy only to be let down by a poor first touch, and with Duncan having to be alert to dispossess the dangerous Barnes, Pilkington were enjoying a good spell of pressure, McCarthy being grateful to Rolfe for being in the right place to avert the danger after the keeper had come for but missed a high deceptive cross. Despite Craig Oldfield scoring for the visitors but from an offside position Gate at last began to string together a series of passes, possession football down the left hand side leading to the opening 31st minute goal, 6 the gate

1 McCARTHY ROLFE DUNCAN TURNER PULISCIANO SUBSTITUTES 12. FELLOWS 14. KNIGHT 15. O SHEA 16. FRAIN MOONEY LACEY EDWARDS BROWN 9 10 RICHARDS EDGINGTON Francis unable to hold on to Tom Lacey s low twenty yard drive, Richards pouncing at close range to convert the loose ball. Duncan reacted to Kyle Turner s determined run with a crucial last ditch tackle, Michael Skerrett skying the resulting corner high over McCarthy s goal. Turner made an equally important tackle to deny Jacob Snape, Gate living dangerously at the back, being prone and forced into making unnecessary mistakes. Edwards won the ball in the middle of the park finding Lei Brown to set up Richards for a daisy cutter deflected behind off a fellow red shirted player, the ultimately uncleared corner bravely headed in by Lacey amongst flying boots after Richards had flicked on Brown s 39th minute cross. Despite doubling their lead Gate continued to look unconvincing, McCarthy saving at Kyle Turner s feet and after Francis had been forced into making a late save from Richards, Gate went in at half time with Cameron Knight on for the injured Nathan Pulisciano and just about deserving their two goal cushion but knowing they needed to work a lot harder to break the resistance of a determined Pilkington outfit. HT Highgate United 2 Pilkington XXX 0 Immediately after the break the impeded Brown was near to getting his head on Rolfe s cross, Mooney then delivering a pass headed on by Brown for Richards touch to be deflected behind. Mooney appeared to be brought down by Francis rugby like tackle only to be denied the penalty the offence seemed to warrant, play continuing in a disjointed fashion with Snape blazing a good opportunity high and wide of McCarthy s goal. Richards cut inside after collecting Rolfe s quickly taken throw-in finishing with a well struck shot hit against Francis boot, Brown getting his legs in a tangle when apparently through off Richards pass then directing a ten yard header off target. Brown s assist ended with defender James Lorney charging down Richards drive, the centre forward then heading Rolfe s cross over the bar. Scott Turner s 60th minute header landed on the roof of the net, but with Gate at last getting on top and looking far more assured they were to have a let off when Lorney despatched a free header off target. Failing to heed the warning Gate were to see a goal pulled back, Knight s attempted 71st minute headed back pass falling at the feet of Barnes who found himself in the clear to beat McCarthy with a cool calm finish. 2014/15 7

HIGHGATEUNITED 2 RICHARDS, LACEY PILKINGTONXXX 1 BARNES SATURDAY 1 NOVEMBER 2014 MFL DIVISION 1 TREVOR EDWARDS TOP OF THE GLASS CONTINUED McCarthy was quickly off his line to smother the ball at Turner s feet, the visitors sensing hesitancy in the Highgate ranks as they went in search of what was to prove an elusive equaliser. On the back foot for long periods and with Brett Fellows on for Mooney Gate sought to catch Pilkington on the break, and should have put the issue beyond doubt when after Francis had dropped Rolfe s cross under pressure from substitute Liam O Shea, Scott Turner s left footed but hurried toe punt was hit the wrong side of an open goal. The miss set up a nervous finish with Kyle Turner looking odds on to score until Duncan intervened with a last ditch tackle, and with Francis up for the final corner of the game a Pilkington head glanced the resulting flag kick just marginally wide of McCarthy s left hand upright. The final whistle blowing on what had been a successful if somewhat difficult afternoon for a relieved Pulisciano and his team.. NEXT UP... There s quite a wait until the next home game for the First Team, when we host Heather St John s. HSJ were relegated from the Midland Alliance last season. They re currently finding it a little tricky in the division where a 1-0 win over fellow strugglers Pershore Town took them 3rd from bottom. Mitchell Woodbine will be their goal threat having scored 7 of their current tally of 22 goals. 8 the gate

WE WILL REMEMBER THEM Highgate United FC are to commemorate the centenary of one of the most iconic moments of the First World War the 1914 Christmas Truce as part of a week of remembrance activity in December Football Remembers Week will take place from 5-14 December. A joint collaboration between The FA, the Premier League, the Football League and the British Council, the aim is to engage football fans and players at every level about what took place on Christmas Day one hundred years ago on the battlefields in Belgium. On 25 December 1914, soldiers from both sides put down their weapons and crossed into no man s land to share in an impromptu ceasefire. First-hand accounts from the time include references to football being played and photographs taken. All photos uploaded to social media using #footballremembers will be automatically uploaded to a special website The site shall act as a moment of record of football in 2014, a century on from the First World War, and will be preserved for future generations. How it will work For ALL matches taking place from 5-14 December, all players involved will pose together in a mixed group photograph as a mark of respect to those on both sides that took part in the 1914 Christmas Truce. Each home team should nominate someone to take the photo. Fans and teams will be asked to upload their pre-match pictures via social media over the course of Football Remembers Week. Any match of any size can be uploaded, from school to Sunday league fixtures, five-a-side matches to kickabouts in the back garden. Those posting photos to social media should use #footballremembers to ensure it is uploaded to the special footballremembers.com website. Any other information is welcome. The website shall act as a moment of record of football in 2014, a century on from the First World War, and will be preserved for future generations. Unfortunately the MFL haven t released the fixtures for December yet so we can t designate which game it will be. 2014/15 9

DUDLEY SPORTS Dudley Sports Football Club changed its name in 1979 from Marsh and Baxter s following the closure of the company. However, people still refer to the club as the The Old Marshes Club. From 1925 to the late 70 s the club just had two Saturday sides playing in the Birmingham Work s League. The club has progressed over the last 30 years and has added a Sunday side that play in the Kidderminster and district Premier League. The club also run junior boy s and girl s teams ranging from under eight to sixteen. The Club gained entry to the Midland Combination in 1984 and entered their reserve team two years later. The club has made good progress in the last few years and following promotion to the Midland Com Premier division in 2002/3 remained there until 2005/6 when they moved to the West Midlands Premier Division, the club has recently upgraded the floodlights and just fell short of further promotion to the Midland Alliance in 2007/ /13 the club have now formed a team to play in the under 18's Midland Floodlit league after an absence of five years, and also joined the Birmingham Ladies Sunday league allowing continuity through junior to senior football throughout the club. 12 the gate

WORCESTERHIRE SENIOR URN The Worcestershire Senior Urn (officially The Worcestershire Football Association Senior Invitation Urn) is a football competition primarily for Worcestershire County FA club teams, organised by the Worcestershire County Football Associations. It began in the season with Malvern Town taking the honours in the first final. The Senior Urn is the less senior of the county's two main cups, and at present entry is restricted to those clubs which are affiliated to the County FA and compete in the highest division of the Midland Football Alliance, West Midlands (Regional) League, Midland Football Combination and Hellenic League. 17 OURHISTORY The Gate were formed in 1948 by a group of orphans from the Father Hudsons St Vincents Home for Working Boys on Moseley Road, Birmingham who met up following wartime service. After progressing from junior football played at Billesley Common in the South Birmingham league, Highgate joined the Worcestershire Combination in Promoted to Division One at the first attempt, the club remained in the league's top division for over 40 seasons. In 1967 Highgate United made national headlines, unfortunately though this was due to a tragic incident. Playing Enfield in the quarter finals of the FA Amateur Cup, when midway through the first half, a lightning strike saw several players collapse. One player, Gates centre half Tony Allden, did not recover and tragically died the following day. As a gesture of goodwill and sympathy, Aston Villa agreed to host the replay of the game and game drew an incredible attendance of over 31,000. The most successful period in the club's history was the mid- 70s. The club won the league championship (by now known as the Midland Combination for three consecutive seasons between 1972 and 1975 and also experienced its best runs in the FA Cup, FA Amateur Cup and FA Trophy within this three year period. Success was hard to come by until off the field following a 25 year planning battle, in 1997 Floodlights were eventually turned on at the clubs Tythe Barn Lane ground. More success came Gates way in 2007, when they became the first team from the Birmingham and Solihull area to win the Coventry Evening Telegraph Cup. The following season the club were promoted to the Midland Football Alliance after finishing as Runners-Up in the Midland Combination Premier League. Despite a promising first season in the MFA, the Gate were then involved in annual relegation battles. In 2013/14 Highgate finished an incredible 3rd in the MFA but were relegated by the FA due to ground regulations to the newly formed Midland Football League Division 1. Roll of Honour Midland Comb. 20 THERESERVES RESERVES URN ING THE PLAUDITS Having already guaranteed their spot in the Semi-Finals of the Urn, Gerry Corrigan and his Highgate Reserves side travel to Fairfield today in a bid to get a firm grip on the league title too. Fairfield Villa currently sit top of the pack, courtesy of having played one more game than the Gate. But The Gate are also riding high undefeated, so that looks to be terrific battle over there. With the Reserves playing so well, it was inevitable that Gerry has received one or two enquiries, including a seven-dayer from an MFL League 2 side for top marksmen Jamie Smith. To Jamie s credit and through his desire to remain faithful to Gerry and The Gate, the enquiry was bounced straight back! All the best today lads! 21 MIDLAND FLOODLIT YOUTH LEAGUE LOST IN THE BLANK COUNTRY In Contrast to The Reserves, Tom Hughes young and mostly inexperienced Youth side are finding the step up to the Floodlit league a little tough at the moment. The side which consists 90% of 16 year olds, battle hard but as yet are having very little joy. The latest disappointment was Wednesday nights 5-1 defeat at the hands of fellow strugglers Dudley Town, who prior to the midweek game had only managed 4 goals in 9 games. The defeat was a bitter blow for Tom and his side who travelled to the Black Country hoping to record a league double, having already defeated Town 3-0 early in September. As Tom says, It s a fast learning curve for the young lads, having had such a good season in the Central Warwicks last year, this is a massive step-up.
