FC CENTRAL NEWSLETTER BUMPER EDITION - NO. 2 - MAY 2014 SEASON REVIEW STUDENT PROGRESSION IN THIS ISSUE: BASFORD UNITED FC CENTRAL NEWS E: enquiries@centralnottingham.ac.uk T:

1 SEASON REVIEW The college s first season in the Conference Youth Alliance was always going to be a tough challenge, but a challenge readily accepted by the players. 11 wins from 20 saw the team finish sixth, albeit on goal difference from fifth-place Solihull Moors. There were many highs during the season, including wins against Mansfield Town, Northampton Town, Boston United and eventual winners, Ilkeston. This follows an excellent pre-season with victories over Notts County, Macclesfield Town and Birmingham City. Central College striker Antonio Wedderburn finished the season as the division s top goalscorer with 14 goals. I would also like to wish those leaving us at the end of the season well in their chosen career path, and a special mention for Matt Hickingbotham who will begin a four-year soccer scholarship in the USA. Recruitment for the season is currently in process and everyone at the college is excited about the new batch of players that will be entering the system in July for pre-season training. Well done to the successful applicants to date and their academic interviews will be taking place now. For more information please contact Head Coach - Ray Power on or please him on ray.power@centralnottingham.ac.uk Central College Nottingham s 5-0 winning clash against Northampton Town at the end of April.

2 STUDENT PROGRESSION IN THE USA MICHAEL MCGLAUGHLIN Michael McGlaughlin is an FA & USSF licensed coach based in Chicago, Illinois. Born and bred in West Bridgford, Nottingham, Michael has had a distinguished playing career which started when he was signed by English professional team Notts County FC of The Football League Division One, spending a number of years in their Centre of Excellence. Upon leaving Notts County, he enrolled at Central College Nottingham, where he combined playing with studying towards a BTEC National Diploma in Sport Development & Fitness. During his time at Central College Nottingham he was called up to represent the Nottinghamshire Football Association district team. Along with the football accomplishments, Michael was able to use his time at Central College Nottingham to take advantage of opportunities to volunteer at the Nottingham Tennis Open on two occasions, where he witnessed first hand what goes on behind the scenes at a major international sporting event. Along with the Nottingham Tennis Open, Michael travelled on two separate occasions to South Africa after selection for Central College Nottingham s Balls to Poverty. The tour was a truly life-changing time as it was the pathway which would eventually lead him to pursue coaching football as a career. Michael credits his time at Central College Nottingham, the challenges he faced by a vigorous academic programme and opportunities such as Balls to Poverty and the Nottingham Tennis Open for giving him the opportunity to pursue a soccer career in the United States. Aged 19, he embarked on a four year soccer scholarship at Ohio Wesleyan University, where he was a member of the team that won the 2011 NCAA National Championship in San Antonio, Texas. Michael graduated with a BA Hons degree in Health & Human Kinetics and Sports Management from Ohio Wesleyan University in May A year prior to graduation he signed a contract to play soccer for AFC Cleveland. A season disrupted by injury, he eventually moved teams and signed with state rivals Zanesville Athletic FC of the National Premier Soccer League, where he captained the team in its inaugural season. After a successful season with Zanesville he once again traded teams and for the 2014 season has agreed a deal to play back at AFC Cleveland. In the off season Michael has been coaching with the youth team s at the Major League Soccer Club, Chicago Fire.

3 STUDENT PROGRESSION UK UNIVERSITY - JOSH BRADSHAW Thinking back to my three years at Central College Nottingham, my memories are filled with nothing but positivity and enjoyment. During my time at college I studied BTEC level three in Sports Coaching and Development while being a part of the Queens award winning charity Balls to Poverty. During my time at college not only did I relish the sports coaching and development course but it has also allowed me to grow as an individual by meeting college deadlines. This improved my time management and my ability to work independently and as a part of team, all these challenges prepared me for my journey now, I am currently studying a Sports Coaching degree at Leeds Metropolitan University. During my time I was also fortunate to win the Sports and Travel and Tourism contribution locally and overseas award for my 650 Volunteer hours. Since 2009 I ve been volunteering as a part of The Balls To Poverty charity. During this time I have also organised and coached sessions within the Nottingham community and in townships in Cape Town, South Africa. This is without doubt my highlight of my college experience, I d advise everyone to get involved. Overall my experiences with Central College Nottingham is nothing but positive, it developed me as an individual as well as educated me within the profession I m now at university studying. I really enjoyed working with the staff and made lifelong friends. STUDENT PROGRESSION - PROFESSIONAL FOOTBALL - HAYDN HOLLIS I came to the college during my time with Notts County Football Club s youth team. First of all I thought all I wanted to do was play football, after speaking with staff at the college and staff at the football club I finally realised that college was a very important part of it all. I really enjoyed my time at the college and I felt I learnt great deal and achieved great grades. The staff at the college played a major part in the success I had with my college BTEC, as the staff made us realise that college was important, but also made learning very enjoyable by being down to earth and friendly. The staff would even be there for you, to talk about personal matters or even football matters, if you felt you needed to talk. I feel the advice I received from the staff helped me grow as a person. I also feel that having a more mature person there to support you is a huge aid for young adults growing up quickly in a different city. I think that going to the college also helped my football and personal life on a number of occasions for example going to college helped me to improve my concentration, meeting deadlines, discipline etc. By attending college all day on a Wednesday and Thursday, helped to break up the football which allowed take me to take my mind off the football club and onto something else. Ultimately by taking my mind off the football side helped me refocus and achieve my goal to become a professional footballer. After college I made the first team debut in January 2012 which made me the first player to progress from the club s Centre of Excellence youth team to a first-team since One day I would like to go on and study something else and possibly pursue a foundation degree in sports coaching at the college, but for the moment I m enjoying my time as a professional footballer at Notts County and taking the opportunity with both hands.

4 STUDENT PROGRESSION EMPLOYMENT - ADY OSBORNE I began a BTEC National Diploma in Sports, Development & Fitness at Central College Nottingham in During my time as a student at Central College Nottingham I was part of the football performance programme. As part of the to Football Academy I had the opportunity to travel to South Africa with Balls to Poverty in 2006 & Upon completion of my BTEC I won a Soccer Scholarship to the United States with Anderson University in South Carolina. During my four years at Anderson University I was a member of an extremely successful soccer programme which represented the South Atlantic Conference in the National Championships. I graduated from Anderson University with a BA in Psychology in On returning to Nottingham I began my postgraduate studies at Nottingham Trent University with an MSc in Psychology. In 2012 I became part of the education department at Nottingham Forest Football Club working with the 1st year academy apprentices delivering a BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Sport, Performance & Excellence. In 2012 I became part of the Balls to Poverty team as University Project Manager, which saw me reunite with the same project I participated in as a student. I have co-ordinated two University tours to South Africa in 2013 & In 2014 I increased my involvement with Nottingham Forest Football Club by becoming the lead co-ordinator of the Girl s & Women s project at Nottingham Forest in the Community. I am due to complete my MSc in Psychology at Nottingham Trent University in August STUDENT PROGRESSION - PROFESSIONAL FOOTBALL - MALACHI LAVELLE MOORE My time at Central College was always really positve. I can honestly say along with most of the other Notts County lads who came through there that it was always something to look forward just having that time away from a stressful youth team environment and into a friendly college. To play some table tennis in between lessons was definitely a highlight as well as the learning of course. I enjoyed the course which was heavily applied to my football career and it kept me focused and with the help of Ian Tombs, Dave Banks, Neil Fowkes and Gary Horsley I found it very easy to progress and achieve some good academic results. Even when I was having my personal problems off the pitch with my mother passing away Ian Tombs and some of the Central staff were always the first to ask if I needed anything or to offer me help and I ll always be forever thankful to them for their support at such a difficult period of my life. We all have good memories of being at the college and there was always some dramas or fun debates between us and the staff. I can t lie I do miss it sometimes and I m glad I studied there. STUDENT PROGRESSION - PROFESSIONAL FOOTBALL - KYLE DIXON My college experience helped me a hell of a lot and really developed many personal skills. I had many enjoyable moments in a relaxed learning environment, understanding when to have a laugh and when to knuckle down to study. I learnt a lot from the educational programme which I used in my Football both training & performing in matches. Finally all the tutors were very supportive and really helped me achieve my deadlines and therefore my grades.

5 BASFORD UNITED FC ACADEMY Central College Nottingham has teamed up with Basford United Football Club to launch an exciting new football and education academy programme for talented year olds. The courses take place at Basford United from September and combine academic study, high quality football coaching and the chance to play in the Youth Conference at the fastest developing non-league set-up in the City. Tutors from the College and UEFA A and B Licenced staff will deliver level 2 and 3 Sport courses with the opportunity to progress to a Foundation Degree in Sports Coaching. Students will have a programme that develops their training, fitness, psychology and physiological underpinning knowledge as well as their practical skills in football and coaching. Students on the programme will also have the opportunity to train with the senior team and could progress to play with the Club. Head of Sport at Central College, Adam Beazeley said: This exciting partnership will appeal to students who have a passion to succeed in football and want to combine this with a reputable education partner. The College is looking to grow its sports offer across the City so teaming up with a football club with the ambition and recent success of Basford is hugely exciting for everyone involved. We are fully committed to making this programme a huge success. Chris Munroe, General Manager of the club said: We re delighted to form a partnership that will provide Nottingham s young players an exciting football education programme that will offer recognised qualifications and a strong performance environment. We re very excited and look forward to seeing the first students flourish and progress into BASFORD UNITED FC FOOTBALL ACADEMY AGED AND ENJOY FOOTBALL? Basford United FC Football Academy High quality football coaching by FA Qualified staff & competition structure Well recognised qualifications through a high quality education provider Delivered at Nottingham s fastest developing non-league football centre with progression into first team playing structure A future in Playing, Coaching, Teaching, Sports Development In partnership with Central College Nottingham HAVE YOU GOT WHAT IT TAKES? For more information contact: our first team. We also see the programme as a way of supporting the growth of football at junior and youth level locally and we want to introduce more teams within our junior club by getting the academy players to volunteer and develop their coaching skills with our junior teams. We see this programme as a platform for both football performance and increasing participation in the local community. The programme has been given a strong endorsement from current Basford player and ex Peterborough & Lincoln striker Francis Green who said: I was plucked from non-league football at the age of eighteen so I can fully endorse this kind of programme which will give young players striving to achieve their dream a great development opportunity. I m a great example of a player getting a break from a local club to the professional game. Basford are currently flying high in the Northern Counties East league and are very keen to maintain their recent momentum both on and off the pitch. For more information contact the College on

6 CENTRAL NEWS - WOMEN S TEAM SUCCESS Central College Nottingham Women s team won their fixture on Weds 19th March against Derby College 3-2. This was the final game for the BCS Women s Category 2 League and resulted in the Central team finishing first in the league. Throughout the season the team have won 4, drawn 2 and not lost any matches when playing against Derby College, Lincoln College and Loughborough College. Central Women s Football Coach Tony Palmer commented, This game presented me and the team with many challenges. In the first half Derby had plenty of jest and were on top leading at half time with a two goal led. The second half there were some player position changes and this paid off and full credit to the girls who came out with determination, motivation and a desire not to be beaten. I witnessed along with others the greatest comeback I have even seen in my coaching career. It was inspiring to watch a togetherness and a passion to outplay the opponents with slick passing, moving, pressing and a desire to put the wrong right. Head Coach Tony Palmer said Well done girls, you can achieve whatever you want to achieve in life. Dreams can come true. The futures bright, the futures Central. Community and Performance Sport Manager Diane Garfield said We are so very proud of the women s football teams achievement and the way they have worked together to achieve an amazing result. For further information regarding this article or the Sport Academy at Central College Nottingham contact Community and Performance Sport Manager, Diane Garfield at: diane.garfield@centralnottingham.ac.uk or CENTRAL NEWS - MAKING THE BALL ROLL Central College is delighted to announce that coaching book, Making the Ball Roll A Complete Guide to Youth Football Coaching for the Aspiring Soccer Coach, written by Head of Football, Ray Power, will hit the shelves in the coming months. This focused and easy-to-understand book details training practices and tactics, and goes on to show you how to help young players achieve peak performance through tactical preparation, communication, psychology, and age-specific considerations. Each chapter covers, in detail, a separate aspect of coaching to give you, the football coach, a broad understanding of youth soccer development. Each topic is brought to life by the stories of real coaches working with real players. Never before has such a comprehensive guide to coaching soccer been found in the one place. A must-read book for any football coach just starting up.

7 NOTTS COUNTY FC EDUCATION PROGRAMME As Course Coordinator of the Notts County youth teams educational programme I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the success of the programme to date. In the four years we have been in partnership with the Football Club we have maintained a 100% record of players successfully completing their academic studies. In addition in that time a number of the players have managed to gain a Professional Football contract which ultimately is every player s goal when they sign that prestigeous scholarship. All of the players who have signed professional deals have said how the education programme has added significantvalue to their experience. The current second years of Notts County football scholars have almost completed their two years educational duties. It has been a massive achievement for all seven of the learners to successfully complete their NVQ in Performance and Excellence, their technical certificate (BTEC National Certifcate in Sport, Performance & Excellence) and their level 2 FA Coaching Certificate. This is a direct reflection of the way each lad has approached college life, each having a very positive attitude towards their studies, fellow peers and staff. Past scholars who are now current players regularly featuring in the first team are Haydn Hollis, Fabian Spiess, Greg Tempest, Curtis Thompson and Kyle Dixon. Colby Bishop an ex student of the college s own Performance & Excellence programme has also featured with the first team. In addition to the above, the apprentices who are not offered professional deals will seek other professional clubs to follow their career aspirations. For example last year two of the players were offered full scholarships at respectable universities in America. Other players have pursued educational routes enrolling at universities in this country, other players remaining at the college to complete other vocational qualifications such as Persoanl Training diplomas. Its vitally important to have these exit routes in place as a very worthy contingency option for the boys who do not make it with the football club. It gives the players another challenge to complete their education and have a plan B in place. The new scholars start college in September with the first years going into year two. These scholars have to be focused and prepared for the hard work and as long as they display the same desire to succeed as their successors I am sure they too will experience a fantastic time at Central College Nottingham. In addition to Notts County we have this season formed a new partnership with Football League Education to deliver education to Nottingham Forest Football Club scholars. This is a very exciting new addition to our professional football link and hopefully this will be a successful scheme for students. DID YOU KNOW?
