I know Darren and the squad are working hard to finish the season strongly and add to this success. This years Town Cross Country Championships saw us finish in our highest ever league position, with all teams in the minor and junior age categories finishing in the top three across all Northampton schools. Mr Mason and his squad have already started their training in a bid to bring home the DRET Cross Country Cup for the first time. Another very pleasing success story has come from our Project Ability programme which is run by Miss Withers. This has seen us compete in zone basketball, football and more recently seeing us qualify for Regional Level competitions in both boccia and indoor rowing. Wednesday 5th October was a very proud day for all associated with Malcolm Arnold Academy, when we won the prestigious title of Secondary Sports of the year, with Miss Clark stepping up to collect our award at the Northampton Sports Awards. I hope you enjoy reading about all things sport at MAA. Best wishes, Mr Lamb Wednesday 0th July: DRET Athletics Talent Day Tuesday 4th July: DRET Cricket & Rounders Cup Finals eepurl.com/rlzj Head of PE & Assistant Principal - Enrichment

2 DRET Winter Cup Hannah Hicks visit On Thursday 6th October 04, over one hundred students from Malcolm Arnold Academy travelled to the University of Nottingham to compete against seven other secondary schools in the David Ross Education Trust Winter Cup. Hannah Hicks, U National Table Tennis Champion and Commonwealth Games player visited the Academy on Friday 5 th December 04 to deliver many elite sessions throughout the day. The event hosts Netball and Football tournaments through five academic years. This was the third year the Academy has competed in the event and we have been improving year on year. Last year Malcolm Arnold were in 5th place, this year the Academy reached top three in rd place. The day began with a visit to Cedar Road Primary where twelve lucky students were coached some basic Table Tennis skills by Hannah. Spring Lane Primary then received a similar session and enjoyed the experience so much that they have arranged a visit back to Malcolm Arnold Academy for a Table Tennis competition using our facilities. A big well done to our year 7 and year 9 boys Football teams who placed st overall. Well done also to the year 0 boys Football team and years 7, 8 and 9 girls Netball teams for achieving rd places overall. Although we did not place st, students at Malcolm Arnold were delighted with their rd place position after their extremely hard work prior to the event and on the day. Congratulations to all competitors who attended the Winter Cup and proudly represented the Academy. Lastly, a huge thank you to the David Ross Education Trust for providing this amazing opportunity for students at Malcolm Arnold Academy and providing them with this fantastic memory. Our gifted and talented Table Tennis players were then given the opportunity to attend a session coached by Hannah. Eight of our talented female Table Tennis players then had an intensive coaching session with Hannah. Lunch time was arguably the highlight of the day as the entire school got to see Hannah in action. One of the tables was brought into the atrium and students got to challenge Hannah over lunch. The atmosphere in the atrium was incredible and it was not only the students up for a challenge, it was the teachers too! The two final sessions of the day were for twenty-five of our dedicated Table Tennis students who regularly attend our cocurricular breakfast after school clubs. Thank you to Hannah for delivering a great day and providing our students with this fantastic and memorable experience. Thank you also to the David Ross Education Trust for providing us with

3 Olivia Mason Visit On Wednesday 6th November 04, Malcolm Arnold Academy was privileged to welcome Loughborough Lightning s Olivia Mason to the Academy for a day of Netball. Olivia attends Loughborough University studying Sport Management but is also a member of the Loughborough Lightning Netball squad playing in the Netball Super League. She has also represented England at U7, U9 and U level. The day began with a question and answer session with our key stage 5 A Level and BTEC students who are currently studying athlete s lifestyles and careers. Students asked Olivia questions regarding her career plan and her lifestyle as an elite Netball player. This session assisted them in understanding the unit they are studying. After starting her day in the classroom, the rest of the day with Olivia was largely based around elite practical sessions with our year 7, 8, 9, 0 & Netball teams. Cedar Road, Kings Heath and Eastfield Primary s were also invited for a practical session with Olivia. Olivia was invited to a VIP lunch with nine of our talented student journalists whilst an interview was conducted: DRET All Stars On Friday 6th October 04, Malcolm Arnold Academy took nineteen students to Grantham Meres Centre to compete in Football and Netball trials to have an opportunity to be selected as a member of the David Ross Education Trust All Star squad. All seven other DRET secondary schools attended the trial but Malcolm Arnold were lucky to have four girls be selected for the U and U4 Netball teams and six boys be selected for the U and U4 Football teams. Over one month later on Tuesday nd December 04, The academy took more students back to Grantham Meres Centre but this time to compete at the David Ross Education Trust Indoor Rowing Competition. Two days after the event, the Rowing All Star squads were released and Malcolm Arnold Academy is proud to announce that five of our talented Rowers have been selected for the squad. To date, Malcolm Arnold Academy have fifteen students representing the Academy as members of the David Ross Education Trust All Star Teams. A student interview with Olivia Mason By the sport journalist team When did you start playing Netball? I started playing when I was ten when I went to a local club. What is the most important thing in preparation for a Netball game or Championship? To have a nutritious diet and arrive at the venue early so I can practise. It is also important to relax with the team as well. Who was/ is your role model? My role model now is probably Rafael Nadal because of his work ethic. What is your best moment in your career so far? My first European Championship as I was only 7 years old. Who supported you when you were younger when you started out playing Netball? My mum supported me a lot and watched some of my training sessions. She was very supportive. 4 Satellite Boxing Club Cross Country Town League On Thursday 5th September, Great Britain Boxer Chantelle Cameron launched our newly formed Satellite Boxing Club at Malcolm Arnold Academy. During three weeks of October, over 40 students at Malcolm Arnold Academy competed in the Northampton Town Cross Country League. The new club is the result of a successful partnership between Kings Heath Boxing Club and the Academy during the last academic year, and the positive impact it had on the local community. Students were split into three categories depending on their academic year. Year 7 s were the Minor category, years 8 and 9 were put into the Junior category and years 0 and were in the Intermediate category. The Satellite Club is open for anyone between the ages of and 4, and runs from 5:0-6:0pm every Thursday evening. Students were up against eleven other schools across Northamptonshire but this did not deter them from excelling. In both the Minor and Junior races, the students achieved outstanding results whilst proudly representing the Academy. Donna Brady, England Boxing clubs support officer for East Midlands said: The new Satellite Club is a positive sign that more young people in Northampton are enjoying boxing as a sport. Without the partnership between Kings Heath Boxing Club and the Academy, these young people might never have considered themselves as sporty or contemplated boxing as a fun and enjoyable way to get fit and active. Netball Development Club Malcolm Arnold Academy Development Netball Club has relaunched this term and is developing as the weeks go on. We have a core group of dedicated players who attend every week and are making strides in their performance both on and off the netball court. The girls have been working on their general skills, as well as focusing on their tactical knowledge and understanding to make them more effective on court. There are more spaces available for anybody who wants to come along and experience specialist coaching from our fantastic netball coach Sam Montgomery. The club runs every Wednesday from pm in the sports hall. Amelia McMurtrie in the Minor Girls results, Malcolm Arnold Academy achieved nd place and rd place overall in the Minor Boys results. In the Junior categories, the girls results lead us into nd place overall and the boys results lead us into rd place (See table). Congratulations to Amelia McMurtrie who achieved st place in the Minor Girls overall individual standings, Kai Fifield who came rd in the Minor Boys overall individual standings and William McMurtrie for coming rd in the Junior Boys overall individual standings. 5 Malcolm Arnold win Secondary Sports of the Year On Wednesday 5th October 04, Malcolm Arnold Academy attended the Northampton Sports Awards where we proudly claimed the prestigious title of Secondary Sports of the Year, in recognition of an unprecedented year of successes for MAA sport. Malcolm Arnold were recognised for offering over twenty different sports in our extra curricular programme, taking part in over twohundred competitive fixtures, winning eight competitions and claiming the title of winners of the DRET Summer Cup, all in the 0/4 academic year. In addition, the award acknowledged the individual successes of MAA athletes and the involvement of the Academy in the local community through satellite sport clubs. House Competitions Malcolm Arnold Academy has run seven inter-house competitions since September and have many more planned throughout the rest of the academic year. One of the most memorable house competitions was the year 8 Football competition which marked one of the most iconic moments of the First World War, the 94 Christmas Truce Football match. s across the country were urged to hold a Christmas truce match and to mark the occasion by tweeting a photograph of the opposing teams with the hashtag #FootballRemembers. s were also urged to upload a picture of the captains shaking hands. Our photograph was uploaded to our Twitter account and was then uploaded onto the Football Remembers website, next to many professional Football teams. Project Ability Project Ability is a Youth Sport Trust initiative which provides competitive sporting opportunities for young people. As well as competitive opportunities, the lead Project Ability can provide training and support for individual schools in new activities, inclusion and specific pupil support. Malcolm Arnold Academy is proud to be one of the only mainstream secondary schools within Northampton who has fully engaged with the programme since September this year. The selected group have competed in many events so far this year including Key Stage and 4 Football, in which the Key Stage 4 team came nd overall. Both teams showed excellent team work and co-operation with each other and empathy with their opponents. These are all achievements of which we should be proud of. The development of the scholars as individuals and as a team in both Football and in their academic studies is our main objective and we will continue to work hard on every aspect of this.
