The original Bootle FC were formed in 1880 and played at Hawthorne Road (next to the cricket ground). They were in fact Everton FC s biggest rivals. Bootle were the first team to win the Liverpool Senior Cup competition and narrowly missed out on becoming a founder member of the football league, to Everton. In Bootle became founder members of the new Football Alliance, which soon became the second division (now the championship!). That season was the most successful as we finished league runners-up, reached the quarter-finals of the FA Cup, where we lost to Blackburn Rovers (0-7). When the Alliance merged with the Football League in 1892, Bootle became founder members of the new Second Division. However, despite a respectable 8th place final position, the club dropped out after one season and seemingly disappeared due to financial problems. Bootle FC s place in the football league was taken by Liverpool FC. Football returned to Hawthorne Road when a new club, Bootle Athletic. was later formed with the new team initially playing in the Liverpool Leagues. In 1948 the club moved to nearby Bootle Stadium and were elected to the Lancashire Combination 2, which was won at the first attempt. However, Bootle struggled in the top-flight and after several tough seasons withdrew and folded during the campaign. In 1953, the current club was formed as Langton and played in the local leagues. After a very successful spell in the Liverpool County Combination (which we won on numerous occasions) the club reverted back to it s It s better known identity of Bootle F.C. in 1973; and a year later joined the Lancashire Combination, which we won in 1976 and Bootle then joined the Second Division of the Cheshire County League, which was won in our first season, and we were promoted to the First Division. In 1982 the Cheshire County League was one of the leagues that merged to form the North West Counties League, which Bootle duly joined, becoming a member of the First Division. The club spent most of their time in the First Division until 2000 when we unfortunately dropped into the Second Division. However, despite finishing 6th in 2002, the club dropped into the Liverpool County Combination as Bucks Park was consigned to history. In 2006 the club, with a new ground, were elected back into Division 2 of the North West Counties League. In 2009 Bootle won promotion to the NWCL Premier Division and also won the Championship. In 2009/10, our first season back in the NWCFL Premier Division Bootle finished a NWCFL highest placing of 3rd. In 2010/11 finished 6th place. They equalled the 3rd place again in saw Bootle come so close to promotion, narrowly missing out with three games to go, and eventually finishing 3rd again. However they put that disappointment aside to win the Liverpool Senior Cup for the first time in 124 years. 25
Welcome back to the Delta Taxis Stadium and welcome to the players, committee and supporters of Maine Road FC. MATCHDAY PRICES 1ST TEAM: 5 ADULTS 2 CONCESSIONS UNDER 16 S FREE FREE ENTRY FOR ALL RESERVE & YOUTH GAMES: LEAGUE GAMES: 1 ENTRY SELECTED GAMES FREE ENTRY It has been a great week footballing-wise for me. With some great results for the team meaning that I was awarded manager of the month. The whole club have played a part in that success especially Neil McQueen and Richie Boswarva and the committee who have helped me a lot. Thanks to the players who have been fantastic from the start. Ashton Athletic was very emotional for the whole club and I was delighted that we won the game with a great strike from Docker (Dan O Connor). We then went to Abbey Hey and produced another great display, and another clean sheet. It was great to see Jamie Rainford make a return to the club and he was excellent when he came on. Cammell Lairds was a different test for the squad and although changes were made, the lads played really well and we deserved the win. We have another tough game today against Maine Road who are again flying high in the league. Its always a great game for the neutral. We will be making full use of the squad with lads missing through injury and we are well capable of winning the game. Personally it has been difficult week. We said goodbye to Frankie on Tuesday and the family and I have been blown away by the messages of support and thanks to each one of you for coming to pay your respects. Thanks for taking the time to read my programme notes and I hope you enjoy the game. Please show your support - the players and I are extremely grateful of it. Thanks Joe Joseph Doran

Dave Backs Gate Youngsters Although his side are down battling in the relegation zone, Squires Gate manager Dave McCann is backing his young players to get the club out of trouble. The Gate squad is heavily based on youth, but Dave has no doubts that it's a policy that will bear fruit for the club in the long term. "We are not a big club with a lot of finance, so I believe youth is the way forward for us", he said. "We have an excellent link with Myerscough College (near Preston), which is one of the reasons why we have so many young players, and this league is a good platform for them to learn. The more experience they get, the better they will be. "I'd like to have a few more experienced players in the side that could help lead and influence the younger lads during a game, but it's not easy finding the right players to do this. Danny Penswick has done this superbly recently and I could do with one or two more like him."but I'm enjoying working with the lads we've got, and I'm sure we have enough quality to see us to safety. We have just had three players recognised at international level - Joe Noblet has been named in the English Colleges FA national squad, and Charlie Russell and Michael Hampson are in the English Schools squad, so that gives an indication of the quality of player we have". One of the challenges that Dave is addressing is adapting the team's playing style to suit the weather conditions at the moment, given that his footballing philosophy is based around a passing and possession game."when we get to this stage of the season and the pitches are heavy, maybe we find it a bit tougher than at the start of the season", he admitted. "But when the weather gets better and the pitches get better, our passing game will shine through a bit more."i'm not blaming the pitches we have played on recently, but we train on 3G and have a good playing surface at Squires Gate, so when the weather isn't so good we have adapt our game a bit, and go a bit more direct than we are used to". In the meantime, Dave is happy to keep faith in his young squad, many of whom are in their first season at this level of football and still learning 'on the job'. "We have to remember that we are still a fairly new team, still gelling together and still learning the trade", he said. "I do feel that this group of players will have enough to see us through this season, and then we can assess and see where we go after that. "But for now, the lads are giving 100%, I can't have any complaints on that front, and we have a good starting point for progressing and moving forward. "I believe we will keep improving, and I know that if the lads continue to work hard and learn, they'll have a bright future ahead of them". 7
MAINE ROAD The club was formed in 1955 as City Supporters Rusholme, when our past Chairman Frank Thompson and a few friends formed a team and after playing a few friendlies joined the local Rusholme Sunday League. In the late sixties the club changed to the Manchester Amateur Sunday League and also moved it s headquarters to the newly built Maine Road Social Club and hence the new name Maine Road FC was born. Ronnie Meredith was now running the club and in we won the Manchester County Sunday Cup and both the club s sides won their respective leagues. This prompted Ron to look for a new challenge and he changed the whole future of the club by moving to Saturday football in the form of the Manchester League. Success followed success on the field and after several years of moving grounds we settled on our present home at Brantingham Road in After a lean spell one of Ron s ambitions was realised in Season when we won the Manchester League Premier Division. In fact we won the league four years running. NEXT UP AT HOME FOR THE BUCKS ABBEY HEY SATURDAY 22ND FEBRUARY PM KO Bacup & Rossendale SATURDAY 1ST MARCH PM KO RUNCORN TOWN SATURDAY 8TH MARCH PM KO Derek Barber took over the managerial reins in 1986 and the clubs progress continued so much so that when the Manchester County FA s new complex at Brantingham Road was built Ron s other ambition was achieved. Entry to the Bass North West Counties League. In only our second season (1989) we finished runners up to Vauxhall Motors but regrettably we denied promotion due to ground grading, so in 1980 we went one better to win the Second Division Championship and take our rightful place in Division One.
MATCH CENTRE In Season we beat Irlam Town 1-0 at Maine Road (home of Manchester City) in the Manchester Premier Cup to complete a unique record in the Manchester County Competitions by winning all five County Cups. The five Manchester County Cups are Premier Cup (1), Amateur Cup (4), Sunday Amateur Cup (1), Intermediate Cup (2), Challenge Cup (4). At the end of Season after twelve seasons in the top division Maine Road were relegated to the 2nd division. This was the first time a Maine Road side had ever been relegated and we hope it will be the last. Two seasons in the 2nd division when our very young side finished 3rd and runners up resulted in a return to the top division. Under the guidance of Chris Simms the club finished 8th and 10th in the following two seasons. The arrival of Ian Walker as Manager saw the club achieve it s highest ever league finish with a 6th place swiftly followed by a magnificent 4th place. On top of that the team lifted the prestigious Vodkat League Cup for the first time. After a difficult early campaign in , the team finished in a respectable 13th position. Season could have been one of our most testing when, by the end of October, we had lost several influential players who had all gone to try out their considerable talents at a higher level. How would we cope without them? Well, pretty well as it happens! The young replacements took on the challenge and we ended up in a very respectable 6th position. This Season Ken Head has Kindly sponsored both Daniel O Connor & Jamie Hay. Frank McCann has kindly sponsored Paul Byrne & Dean Porter If you would like to find out what sponsorship is available please see our pdf Brochure on our website: Alternatively, please for more information: Mediateambfc@gmail.com Or secretarybfc@gmail.com season saw the arrival of a new management team in John Morrey and Chris Thomas. Their first season in charge saw he club achieve its highest ever league position finishing runners up by just one point to Padiham. Maine Road has a long and proud reputation for introducing young players into the club. This began with the introduction of a Youth Team run by Derek in the late 1980 s, which brought a succession of fine young players to the club. This success in spotting and nurturing the best young talent has continued over the last decade with Maine Road s domination of the Umbro International Football Tournament at Under 19 level. Over the last 11 seasons our Under 19 s have taken on and regularly outplayed talented youngsters from around the world. They have won the competition an amazing 6 times and been runners up 3 times. The record set by the team of 2003 may never be surpassed when 8 of the squad regularly played 1st team football in the same season. Another factor in the continued success of the club is the outstanding loyalty shown by many players, the best examples are our Former 1st Team Managers Ian Walker who amassed 631 appearances, Chris Simms 556 appearances, Gordon Woods 465 appearances and Mark Mitchell 325 appearances.
THE MATCH 1-0 Monday 27th January 2014 Match Facts Bootle: Porter; Kilroy, McQueen, Robertson (Black), Byrne (C); Young (Christiansen), Tyson, Hay, Roberts, Peterson; O'Connor (Thompson). Subs: McDowell, Moran, Christiansen, Thompson, Black. Attendance: 103 Bootle progressed through to the semi-finals of the Liverpool Senior cup with a hard fought 1-0 victory over Cammel Lairds at the Delta Taxi stadium. In a game hampered by the shocking weather conditions, both teams struggled to get a real grip of the game with passing going astray by both teams from the early stages. The bucks created the first chance of the game. Daniel O Connor done superbly chasing down a loose ball. O Connor, then played in Tom Peterson, who saw his shot go wide of the near post. Eleven minutes before half- time Bootle were denied a stone wall penalty. Michael Young played in Chris Tyson who pocked the ball past the on rushing defender, only to be stopped in his tracks by the Laird s defenders leg. The referee dismissed the appeals of the Bootle players and supporters and awarded a goal-kick much to the surprise of both players and spectators. The bucks then created a superb chance to take the lead on the stroke of half- time. Georgie Robertson played a superb ball over the top to find Daniel O'Connor. O Connor then played the ball into the path of Tom Peterson. But Peterson s chip sailed over the cross bar. Eight minutes into the second half and Peterson again had a chance to give the bucks the lead. Michael young done superbly down the left. His cross deflected right into the path of Peterson, who s header sailed over the cross- bar and into the dodge kop. Peterson made amends for his early misses, by giving the bucks the lead, ten minutes into the second half
Bootle Share The Points With Alder Another slow start from Merseyrail Bootle Ladies, saw them let in a goal in the opening 10 minutes. However, the game started to settle down and the girls started to find their feet. The game was not one of Bootle's best performances but two amazing freekicks from leading goalscorer Chelsea Penny, put the game into Bootle's hands, but a slip of concentrate in the last 2 minutes allowed Alder to rescue a point The girls are back in action Sunday 26th January when they entertain Liverpool FEDS at the Delta Taxi Stadium, 2pm. Please come and show your support. Entry is FREE A long ball up the pitch bounced off O Connor and perfectly into the path of Peterson, who's shot from 20 yards went under the Lairds goalkeeper Mike Langley and into the back of the Dodge Kop net to give the bucks a well-deserved lead. Substitute Kevin Black then had the chance to finish the game off. After picking up the ball inside his own half, Black drove at the Lairds defence before unleashing a low drive with was comfortably pushed away by Langley. Laird s finally created their first real chance of the game with 2 minutes of normal time remaining. Jon Atkinson s low drove was only half pushed away by returning Bootle goalkeeper Dean Porter. Porter then reacted superbly to pounce on the loose ball and kill the Lairds attack. Three minutes into added time and Lairds had a golden chance to send the game to penalties. Potter initially saved well from Richie Foulkes, getting down low to turn the ball away, but lairds somehow retained possession and when ball ended up back in the Bootle box the ball fell to Lairds makeshift striker Liam Hollett, but his bicycle went well over the cross bar. And with it went Cammel Lairds hopes of a Liverpool Senior Cup victory. Bootle's love affair with Senior Cup continues and with the bucks now 4 games unbeaten. Manager Joe Doran will hope his side s momentum will continue when he welcomes Maine Road to the Delta Taxis Stadium, in the North West Counties League. #UPTHEBUCKS #FORFRANKIE
