Within a few weeks time we will have up to six new members, thanks to the tremendous effort of Membership Director Edd Samut. Given the number of activities and upcoming events, the induction and subsequent involvement of new members will be very timely. One of the most significant features of this month will be the grand opening of the Kwinana Adventure Park. This is a result of three years of planning, organization and networking guided by the capable leadership and enthusiasm of our very own PDG John Iriks. A huge congratulations to John on his determination and passion for the project which no doubt will become a great asset and attraction for Kwinana. As well as the opening of the adventure park, during October we will also be having our Village Markets at Wellard, Hat Day for Mental Health, Restaurant Meeting at Chawla s Indian Restuaurant to celebrate World Polio Day, and the Kwinana Festival. Amidst all of this, regular programs such as the bread run and Gilmore College Breakfast Club will be taking place, while plans will be taking shape for the Christmas Day Lolly Run, Swimarathon, and Classic Car Event. *Note invitation to Rockingham Kwinana Inner Wheel Fashion Parade on Tuesday 18 October. A sneak preview of the Kwinana Adventure Playground has been arranged for all members of the Kwinana Rotary Club Wednesday 5 th October. Brian Mc will give more details. 3. The opening of the Kwinana Adventure Playground has now been announced and invitations have been given to all Rotary members to attend as VIPs on the 16 th October 11am; what a great milestone this will be. John Iriks has done a great job shifting the Wellard Markets back in front of the shopping centre; this was one of the best markets I have attended. Well done to all concerned; those that can please attend the wash up session to air the pros & cons. International The International Committee has carried out the following: GG & GG have been submitted to Foundation and we are still answering questions. I have resubmitted a couple of documents Tom Hoyer has done a great job of refurbishing the school at Ira-Onu and the kindergarten at com - all within budget and on time (see attached happy snaps). The tanks for the Laga orphanage are on site and ready to be installed in the October work program. All the tanks and poly pipe have been delivered to Naha e and it s ready to go as soon as Ted and Mick arrive. Materials for Timor-Leste have been ordered and paid for and delivered to site, and the team is now a lot less financial after I paid the bills (in fact, bloody near broke!!!). The group will be returning to Timor on Monday 10 th October. Max Bird

Despite the wild weather, we persevered and raised some additional funds for the school in Indonesia. Folks are asked to meet at the entrance of Walgreen Crescent. The Village Markets at Wellard will be held this Sunday 9 October. The theme will be Trick or Treat. One generator is needed for power. The council have asked us to change our December market to a twilight meeting on the first weekend; council will organize lightin. The official opening of the Kwinana Adventure Playground will be on Sunday 16 October at 11am, to which members and partners are invited. After discussion with the COK, it was decided that our club would not be in charge of traffic control for the event. The club has been invited to do a Niche Living BBQ at McWilliam Park on Saturday 29 October. Christmas Lolly Run: have approval for us to conduct the lolly run in the same format as last year. We will need at least two more teams of Santas. Utes and trucks only are permitted; cannot use trailers. 12,000 bags of lollies will be needed! Nigeria reclassified as polio-endemic END POLIO NOW THURSDAY, 29 SEPTEMBER 2016 Nigeria reported three cases of wild poliovirus in the northeastern state of Borno in August of this year. Following the World Health Organization s confirmation of these cases, the country returned to the list of polio endemic countries. The other polio endemic countries are Afghanistan and Pakistan. These are the first cases detected in the country since July 2014, and while this news is disappointing for all Rotary members, we are confident that Nigeria can defeat polio. Rotary provided $500,000 to assist immediately with the outbreak response, and an emergency response plan has already been put into action in coordination with our partners. Large-scale vaccination campaigns are ongoing across five countries in the Lake Chad basin to counter the outbreak. Despite these new cases, there has been significant progress toward ending polio in Nigeria, the rest of the African continent and globally in recent years.

8 . Guest Speaker Monique M ulligan Koorliny Arts Centre Guest speaker Monique Mulligan gave us a very insightful account of the Koorliny Arts Centre and its functions. Given that many of us have enjoyed attending events there, such as children s concerts and theatrical productions, it was very interesting to hear of its full range of programs and activities. The establishment has just celebrated 25 years in the Kwinana community, and to mark the event a time capsule was buried. Hopefully the next 25 years will provide just as much entertainment! The vision of the Koorliny Arts Centre is: To be a professional community arts centre Programs to support community members Help locals become involved in the arts The goal of the Koorliny Arts Centre: To provide diverse programs and activities Aiming to encourage new audiences. The Koorliny Arts Centre has presented many high quality in-house theatre shows. This has been made possible through the generous sponsorship of Kwinana Industries Council (KIC). The centre has been publicly acknowledged for the quality of its productions. Earlier this year, the Koorliny Arts Centre was awarded the Yvonne Hoffman Award for putting on sustained quality programs. Furthermore, the centre has had three major wins from 21 nominations in recent awards, and three of their musicals produced have placed in the top three shows around Perth. In addition to holding theatre productions, other programs at the Koorliny Arts Centre include: Morning Melodies program: On every second Friday morning of the month, the centre organises for a performer to come in to give a show lasting for an hour; morning tea is provided. Tribute shows e.g. Roy Orbison, Neil Diamond; these are very popular Stories on Stage: for people who love books and writing; the activity involves interviews with authors. Kwinana Dance Festival: an 11-day festival held in the September/October school holidays, with approximately 1700 entrants Touring shows e.g. Melbourne International Festival, Tom Burlinson Frank Sinatra Show Community Groups e.g. Koorliny Leisure Painters, musical theatre classes, book club, craft groups, social tai chi, dance schools, music schools, ninja school How can you get involved? 9 Congratulations to the Rotary Club of Karrinyup Several weeks ago we enjoyed a presentation on the Earbus project. The Rotary Club of Karrinyup have recently been acknowledged at a District level for their efforts, as indicated below. During the Rotary year, District 9455 recognised the Rotary Club of Karrinyup as having made a significant contribution to Indigenous people through the Earbus project. This recognition is an amalgam of many Rotary Clubs and individual supporters this is also your recognition. Past District Governor Jerry Pilcher attended our meeting recently to present the Indigenous Service Award for to Vocational Service Director Nick on behalf of the club. Past District Governor Jerry said 'The Indigenous service award recognises a club project that benefits or will benefit the indigenous community or communities the most. There is no doubt that the Earbus project will make a huge difference both in prevention, as well as cure, of ear disease among remote indigenous communities in WA. The Rotary Club of Karrinyup is to be sincerely commended for a great initiative and in bringing the project in on budget and on time.' Both construction and funding progress of the project are on schedule as you are all aware and completion is expected in mid - October.
